San Francisco’s Blackbird Blackbird is known for a chilled out California vibe that’s present on his Halo LP and Summer Heart LP, with dreamy chillwave tracks like “Hawaii” making you feel like all is right with the world and a little bit like you’re underwater. Not to mention a few remixes released here and there via SoundCloud, tackling the likes of Rihanna and Ginuwine.
At the other end of the spectrum, A$AP Rocky is known for carrying the New York hip-hop torch with his scorching debut Long.Live.A$AP. He’s bringing gangster rap back to the forefront of pop culture, reminding us of the glory days circa 1994.
These two seemingly opposing forces meet on this remix. Blackbird Blackbird decided to put a chillwave spin on A$AP’s Friendzone-produced track “Fashion Killa,” and man does it work. The remix adds a little warmth and fun to an already laid-back track with the likes of some signature synth play and well-placed breaks.
I guess Harlem’s not really that far from San Francisco, at least as far as music’s concerned. Perhaps Blackbird Blackbird is putting together some hip-hop beats in the near future? We can only hope, and until that day comes, this remix should hold us over.
