There are a few Australian producers concentrating on a more hip-hop influenced sound, and young talent Slamagotchi (Sebastian Vivian) is one of them. Attending the music hotbed of Chatswood High School alongside fellow Indie Shuffle favorite Kilter, Vivian has spent the last few years crafting a pretty phenomenal back-catalogue (which can be enjoyed on his SoundCloud). We’ve featured a couple of tracks he’s been involved with, like his collaboration with Oisima, and also Georgia Potter’s brilliant single “Reckless” which he produced.

Having already shared the stage with international acts like Toki-Monsta and Knxwledge, and locals like Jonti and Seekae, he’s also developed ties with US-based crew NASA8 — some of whom feature on his latest track. On “Nu Jax,” Vivian has employed a typically smooth, laid-back tempo which allows his crew to lay down sharp, punchy rhymes. It’s more J Dilla than a lot of his more twisted solo stuff, which draws obvious influences to artists like Flying Lotus and Shlohmo.

I’ve always been a huge hip-hop fan, but after a huge drop in quality over the past decade, it’s been hard to keep up. With a new breed coming through now though, it’s an exciting time for the genre.

A lot of remixes are sent my way, and unfortunately the majority of them don’t differ too much from the original. This one, however, stands out as perhaps the most surprising to date.

Chet Faker should be known to most of you by now. The Melbourne electronic musician first caught our attention back in mid-2011 with his rendition of Blackstreet’s classic R&B track “No Diggity” (which was also featured during this year’s Superbowl on this Beck’s ad), before breaking out last year on the back of his debut EP Thinking in Textures.

Regular Indie Shuffle followers may also remember us having featured a number of tracks from Rat & Co earlier this year, with their album One (壱) Uno (壹) Ein still one of my favorite records of the year.

The link between these two acts is strong, with Rat & Co mastermind Josh Delaney a key member of Chet Faker’s touring band, so this remix should come as no surprise. Rat & Co have hardened the track somewhat, adding sharp percussion and some metallic samples, but I think this combination works really well.

The buzz around Chet Faker doesn’t seem like it will disappear anytime soon, as he’s been busy collaborating with or covering a slew of big-name artists including Flume, Say Lou Lou, the Temper Trap and Burial. On top of that, he was voted among the 10 Most Powerful Beards in Australian Music recently.

Rat & Co have just completed a tour around Europe which saw them support Faker in England, France, Germany and Spain, and just announced a national tour back home. Here’s their latest video for their track “Now You’re Dreaming”.

If you’re in the mood for some smooth modern day disco, then the latest track from Melbourne electro duo Back Back Foward Punch has exactly what you need. The production/vocalist team of Andy Liddell and Laura Boland (respectively) were first introduced to Indie Shuffle listeners earlier this year with their dance-floor friendly single “Zero to Disco,” and now they’re back with another.

“Don’t Stop Now” swings into action quickly and the smooth pace is kept throughout, with Boland’s gentle vocals hovering above a fluid, polished bassline. The synth arrangement and sampling slide effortlessly in giving it more of a laid-back, poppy feel – making for a very easy listen.

Melbourne student Tom Day has done what most people haven’t been able to. He’s proved that procrastination is sometimes a good thing. Currently completing his chemistry PhD, he’s used his “free time” wisely, creating a pretty significant volume of work (which can all be found on his SoundCloud). Teaming up with Monsoonsiren, 19-year-old Nathan Menon from India, he’s launched a new project which will see its debut EP released in the coming months.

The first track off brand new label Zero Through Nine, this collaboration’s first single, “Dreams,” was released to mark this special occasion. Atmospheric and deeply introspective, the arrangement on this song is phenomenal, and when added to Menon’s haunting falsetto tones, it’s a definite winner. I’m usually pretty forthcoming with compliments, but this is the sort of music which makes you give thanks for ears.

Given this is just the first release, I’m pretty excited to see what else Tom Day, Moonsiren and the rest of the guys at Zero Through Nine have in store.

Young Melbourne band Snakadaktal have captured their fair share of hearts over the past couple of years. Formed in 2009, the school friends first entered the spotlight after winning the Triple J Unearthed High competition in 2011, paving the way for their debut EP release later that year. The EP was a breakout success, with singles “Chimera” then “Dance Bear” widely circulated through radio and online (including on our humble site).

Recorded in an old horse stable, the band’s debut album Sleep in the Water is due out on August 2nd, and they’ve just given us the first taste of what to expect with the record’s first single “Ghost.”

Demonstrating talent beyond their years, “Ghost” sees the band take on a deeper, melancholic tone than what we’ve heard in the past. Slinky bass throbs, subdued percussion and twinkling guitar riffs make for a particularly mellow tune, especially when one adds the misty vocals of Phoebe Cockburn.

This is by far my favorite work to date from this talented group, and I’m excited to see what more they have to offer. By the way, in case you were wondering – a Snakadaktal is the cross between a pterodactyl and a snake…obviously.

Since we brought you the debut single from Sydney electronic duo Cosmo’s Midnight back in April, the twin brother combination have continued to gain plenty of attention. In recent months, they’ve supported international heavyweights xxyyxx and Cashmere Cat on their tours down under — the perfect lead-up to the release of their debut EP, Surge.

Of the four tracks from the EP, “Phantasm” is probably the most poppy (I likened them to Purity Ring and Disclosure as a reference point). The remaining music delves a lot deeper into the lush soundscapes the guys touched on with their first single. The vocals on title track “Surge” are hardly dominating, really just being used as another layer of the overall sound, while “Lover’s Shadow” and “Won’t You Stay” are almost entirely instrumental. What this means is that the production needs to be pretty spot on to maintain the listener’s attention — and I wouldn’t be writing this if it wasn’t. Deep and dreamy, any of the tracks would be perfect for our Sunday Night Chill posts, but I’ve settled on the slightly more uptempo “Lover’s Shadow” to feature here.

Cosmo’s Midnight create the type of music most electronic artists aspire to, which is made even more impressive given it’s their first attempt. Whitley is the moniker of Melbourne’s Lawrence Greenwood, a talented and enigmatic singer/songwriter who has spent the last couple of years in musical hiatus. After releasing his much-loved LP Go Forth, Find Mammoth in 2009, he’s spent the last couple of years traveling the globe, planning his return to the spotlight. Now complete, news of his next album, Even the Stars are a Mess, has been revealed — with a release date scheduled for July 5, 2013.

The album’s first single indicates the wait may well be worth it, with “My Heart is not a Machine” an absolutely gorgeous folk-pop lament. Greenwood’s warm vocals have been joined by the echoing harmonies of Esther Holt to create a stunningly heartfelt tale of introspection. With voices like this, you don’t need too much else, and the steady percussion and hovering guitar work are just enough to finish this one off.

A couple of great remixes of this one have also recently become available (here) from Leadbetter and Fractures — both worth checking out if you love this song as much as I do.

Recently added to the sold-out Splendour in the Grass festival (which will also feature performances from Frank Ocean, Mumford and Sons and The National), expect this to be a triumphant return for this truly talented individual.

Gold Coast-based six-piece Fairchild first formed as a band back in 2005 while still in high school, so you could say they’ve taken the scenic route to get to where they are today. Originally starting out as a covers band (they called themselves Fairchild Republic), they progressed from demoing to releasing their debut EP, Ships are for Sailing, back in 2010.

After hooking up recently with UK-based producer Catherine Marks (Foals, Editors, The Killers), the band now have three singles as part of a self-titled EP scheduled for release this year. The first was the tropically-infused “Burning Feet.”

Marks’ influence has obviously rubbed off on the band, because they’ve developed a deeper, more commanding sound. Second single “Dancer” is a great indication of this new direction, drawing clear references to some of the more epic indie rock bands like Foals and Bloc Party. For a band of six, you’d expect a big sound, and Fairchild doesn’t disappoint; “Dancer” builds throughout, with driving choruses, echoing vocals and powerful arrangement — which especially comes in to play at the two minute mark.

For a band who’s been around for so long, it’s nice to see they’re starting to make some waves.

Gold Coast-based six-piece Fairchild first formed as a band back in 2005 while still in high school, so you could say they’ve taken the scenic route to get to where they are today. Originally starting out as a covers band (they called themselves Fairchild Republic), they progressed from demoing to releasing their debut EP, Ships are for Sailing, back in 2010.

Left. is a brand new project from Sydney guitarist Jono Graham and vocalist Sarah Corry. Graham plays with indie pop band Made in Japan (who we’ve featured a number of times), while Corry has been featured on hip-hop records from Sydney groups Spit Syndicate and Horrowshow. With Adit Gauchan from Horrorshow producing the three recently released tracks, it’s a definite mix of styles — but the result is excellent.

I was sent a couple of the tracks over a month ago when they were still a work in progress, and I was impressed with them then. Now, after the final tweaking has been completed, they’re even better. Without a nominated single yet, it was hard to choose between the three, but I decided on highlighting “Poison Vine.” Upbeat but still dreamy, the fusion of glittering guitar layers and heavy-hitting percussion works a treat, paving the way for Corry’s soothing vocals to come to the fore.

Here’s a cool collaboration out of Melbourne for you. Haxx is one-half of electro-pop duo DEJA, which we’ve featured a number of times over the past 12 months. Aside from his remixes of Hermitude and Kimbra (check them out on DEJA’s SoundCloud), he’s started making a name for himself as a producer.

“Memo” is his latest track, a project he worked on with John Jakubenko, vocalist for Melbourne indie pop band Red Ink. Commencing quietly, Jakubenko’s smooth vocals (which were recorded on an iPhone!) are immediately highlighted against a backdrop of delicate percussion and piano, before haxx marks himself on the track. A genuine nu-R&B slow-burner, the rise and fall of the beat combined with the standout vocal interplay (haxx has enlisted the other half of DEJA, Rromarin to give the track a female perspective) makes this well worth a listen.

You can often tell when a band’s about to blow up — it’s a bit of a calm before the storm situation. News filters through of who they’ve been working with, reputable bands get them to tour, and then they start releasing singles, which start generating plenty of buzz.

Melbourne four-piece World’s End Press fit this profile to a tee. Working alongside the reputable Tim Goldsworthy (who’s been behind the work of Massive Attack, LCD Soundsystem, and the Rapture), they’re currently putting the finishing touches on their debut album, due out later this year. Their touring history reads like a who’s who of the electro-pop industry, with support slots for the likes of Hot Chip, Metronomy, Bloc Party already in the books (and a quick US tour scheduled alongside Cut Copy in June).

The album’s first single “Deadbeat Sweetheart” was released last month, and it was an indication of a big release. Now, they’re back with a second, the upbeat pop track, “To Send Our Love,” which we’ve been given the premiere for. This one’s a great reference point for the band’s clear 80s influences, with elements of grunge, disco, and punk all mashed together alongside plenty of synth layering and lead singer John Parkinson’s flailing vocals to top it off.

These guys are often referred to in the same breath as Cut Copy, and based on what we’ve heard thus far, similar success could be just around the corner for them. The stage is set.

I don’t often review EPs or albums these days, but every now and then a particular release is worth highlighting. Electronic duo Willow Beats have had their singles “Alchemy” and “Elemental” featured already, but their Alchemy EP has a further three tracks to take in. The Melbourne-based Uncle/Niece combination have been received wonderfully thus far, and there’ll be plenty more support for them on the back of this release.

The EP’s first two singles showed off Willow Beats’ versatility, with the bouncy “Alchemy” making way for the more subdued, vocal-driven second single, “Elemental.” This range continues on Alchemy, with three varied interpretations of the electronic genre. “Blue” is perhaps their take on modern R&B, with regular vocalist Kalyani Ellis joined by beatmaker Narayana Johnson’s surprisingly smooth tones (it’s the only track he sings on). “Incantation” takes a fantastical turn, with their typically fractured layering and experimental programming coming to the fore. “Cog Goblin” could be the Willow Beats version of a banger, with their twisted and engaging beats taking on a harder edge.

Willow Beats are a great alternative to the button pressers swamping the electronic music industry, and a great indication of what this genre can offer. Alchemy is an EP that should be celebrated.

I’ll be first to admit that I’m a bit of a music snob. When a song I like  becomes too popular, I’ve been known to turn my back on the artist. There’s been plenty of examples of my hating, and Sydney singer/songwriter Matt Corby has received more than his fair share. Maybe it’s his obvious talent, maybe it’s his scruffy good looks and piercing eyes, or perhaps I just got sick of every radio station playing his hit single “Brother” to death. Whatever it was, I’m sorry Matt, you’re alright.

He’s actually more than alright. The young star gives off a lovely humble vibe despite his growing international success. He’s back in Australia at the moment, having toured the world over the last year, and he just released his latest single “Resolution.” When I found out, the hate got to me (of course), and I was ready to write the new track off as boring and commercial. But then I listened to it, and it was good — the dude can sing! I listened to it a few more times and decided I should stop hating.

Well done, Matt. You’re pretty cool. I can’t guarantee the hate won’t be back when everyone picks this track up, but for today at least, you’re the man.

Every time Melbourne-based I’lls release something new, I think to myself, “This is it for them right? They can’t improve on this one!” Then they go ahead and do just that.

The classically trained trio released their debut EP Thread back in 2011, and their second, A Warm Reception, is due out on June 17. The EP’s first single, “Plans Only Drawn,” was featured on Indie Shuffle back in March, and they’ve just released another absolutely delectable track.

“Speak Low” is an introspective masterpiece; the warmth this track gives off is unbelievable. Everything about it creates a fantastical dreamscape — from the deep bass riffs, to the withdrawn percussion and gentle keys, all the elements are balanced to perfection. Simon Lam’s vocals drift in and out throughout; you couldn’t have a different voice on this track.

To wrap this up, I write about music that I like, so there’s nothing new about me saying that this is a good band. But, I’lls aren’t just a good band — they’re a special one.

Oscar Slorach-Thorne is one brilliant dude. Initially catching our attention as half of the quirky pop duo Oscar + Martin, he’s split off on his own recently to concentrate on his Key Sung project. His single “WIMLTM” was featured on Indie Shuffle last year, before he worked alongside Mercury Music Prize-nominated wordsmith Ghostpoet and Brooklyn’s MeLo on their recent MELOGHOST collaboration. Now concentrating on his own work, he’s just released two tracks which should continue his rise.

As well as a cover of Miguel’s “Sure Thing” (well worth a listen here), Key Sung’s original highlights his unique talent. “It’s Coming,” while showing a slightly more commercial R&B side to his work, still contains plenty of the quirky traits which we’ve come to know and love from the Melbourne-based artist. Tight looping and precise beats provide the perfect base for Slorach-Thorne’s soulful vocals. Lovers of the Weeknd or Jai Paul will swoon over this work. Both tracks are available for free download on his SoundCloud.

With BBC Radio 6 programmer Gilles Peterson championing him, international recognition is sure to follow soon. Be sure to check out his Bandcamp for a taste of his earlier work.

As well as a cover of Miguel’s “Sure Thing” (well worth a listen here), Key Sung’s original highlights his unique talent. “It’s Coming,” while showing a slightly more commercial R&B side to his work, still contains plenty of the quirky traits which we’ve come to know and love from the Melbourne-based artist. Tight looping and precise beats provide the perfect base for Slorach-Thorne’s soulful vocals. Lovers of the Weeknd or Jai Paul will swoon over this work. Both tracks are available for free download on his SoundCloud.

With BBC Radio 6 programmer Gilles Peterson championing him, international recognition is sure to follow soon. Be sure to check out his Bandcamp for a taste of his earlier work.

FBi is a Sydney-based community radio station which prides itself on supporting Australian music (and does an incredible job in my opinion). Indie Shuffle’s affiliation with FBi in Australia extends to our Indie Shuffle Presents gigs being put on at FBi Social, the radio station’s brilliant live venue.

Recently, one of the station’s longest running programs, The Bridge, put out a compilation of local electronic music entitled Maker, a lot of which is perfect for this week’s Sunday Night Chill. Designed to give the public an introduction to a few of Australia’s burgeoning electo-music community, it includes a couple of artists which have been featured on Indie Shuffle previously (Spoonty, Nakagin). The entire compilation of ten tracks can be downloaded for FREE on Bandcamp.

Sydney producer Lancelot is no stranger to Indie Shuffle, with a few of tracks/remixes already sitting pretty in our archives. His 2012 We Can Dance EP (which featured the single “Spoken Word“) was quickly circulated, introducing this young man as one to watch. Even noted producers like the Magician and Goldroom (who even remixed the EP’s title track) were transfixed by this disco-house champion.

He’s just released his first original material of the year, with a two-track available on his SoundCloud for free download. “You’ll Never Be Mine” is a sure-shot; I can’t remember hearing a smoother track in recent memory. Perfectly produced, Lancelot claims it shows off the new, deeper direction his music is taking on.

Lancelot’s follow up EP, Thinking of You, will be released in full next month; hopefully this is enough to tide you over.

Melbourne’s Pikelet are a creation of Evelyn Morris, who, back in 2006, debuted as a solo project. While still on her own, she opened for the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Jens Lekman after releasing her first album in 2007. Now a four-piece, Pikelet are soon to release a third LP — a follow up to their critically acclaimed 2010 album Stems.

The first tease of the album has just hit the Internet with “Pressure Cooker,” a taste of what’s to come. Psych-pop would be a prudent way to describe this band; Morris leads the way with her somewhat shadowy vocal renderings. The celestial landscape is finished to perfection with psychedelic key and guitar layers and a slightly hazy finish to the production. It’s got a terrific dark-beauty to it.

Calluses will be out in August this year via Chapter Music.

Pigeon are a Brisbane-based group still in the early stages of their assault on the Australian indie pop scene. The five-piece released their debut EP Fortunes last year, drawing plenty of attention and prized support slots for the likes of Van She and Strange Talk.

The EP’s second single, “Encounters,” was perfectly designed to be remixed, and that’s exactly what Melbourne based DJ/producer Airwolf has done. Already known for his disco-infused mixes, Airwolf has done a solid job with this one. He hasn’t altered it too drastically, but has definitely added to the pop anthem by speeding it up and giving it his renowned disco signature. And of course, the epic sax solo towards the end doesn’t hurt.

This is a track I should have featured last year, so thanks Airwolf for giving me a fresh opportunity to give this one a shout-out.

As part of influential Sydney electronic trio Seekae (who we’ve featured on a Sunday Night Chill playlist), Alex Cameron has been celebrated both locally and internationally.  The band’s percussionist, Cameron, has also branched off on his own, recently debuting his live show. After releasing “Gone South” (you can check out the clip below) earlier this year, he’s just offered up his first official single.

“She’s Mine” sees Cameron take a another step away from Seekae’s beat-orientated electro — the David Bowie references will be quickly noted given the seductive vocals and the synthy 80s vibe of the track. Most importantly, the track’s production is spot on, with the somewhat minimalist arrangement ably supporting Cameron’s strong voice and poignant lyricism.

I love a good side project, and this is an excellent one. Luckily, Cameron’s got a whole album ready to unleash on us in the coming months; I can’t wait!

Flume and Notorious B.I.G — not much in common, eh? Actually, when you consider these two artists, there are actually a few significant similarities. Both seemed to come from nowhere and gained overnight worldwide notoriety at a young age. Biggie’s debut album, Ready to Die, came out when he was just 22, while Flume’s self-titled LP was released just after his 21st birthday (let’s hope the latter sticks around a little longer than the former!).

What they most have in common, however, is the smoothness of their music. I remember watching a Biggie documentary which compared his rapping style to that of a jazz trumpeter — so on-point was his flow — while Flume’s silky beats contain a heavy hip-hop influence. If only there was a way to put the two of them together! Oh yeah, we live in the 21st century.

Perth natives Jaymee Franchina and Jeremy Smith have done exactly that, grafting some of Biggie’s most familiar raps over most of Flume’s back catalogue. I find that mash-ups often don’t suit, and are often just for novelty value, but these tracks work. This collection is available on Bandcamp for streaming; I’ve picked “Juicy Insane” as my favorite, what’s yours?

Back in March, I reviewed a great track from Sydney electronic duo Lusinth. Now, one of the artists, Charlie Tait, has started a side project, Cambio Sun.

His first finished work is “Intuition,” a release that a seasoned performer would be proud of, let alone an 18-year old still finishing high school. The instrumental half of Lusinth, Tait has structured this track beautifully, with sparkling guitar, smooth percussion and well-placed breakdowns showing this talent’s large potential. The vocal arrangements on the track are super too, rising and falling throughout, giving it a really dreamy vibe — and best of all, it’s Tait singing himself!

Another wonderful young producer to keep an eye on in the coming year.

You can clearly see how delicately this track has been structured in its layering, and it’s interesting to try and pick out Embassy’s varied influences in different sections. Best of all, it’s a “name your price” download on his Bandcamp.
