This was my third year in a row attending the crazy ass Zoo! I was astounded to see how packed the place was; attendance this year hit 110,000 for the three days combined, which is about 30,000 more than last year. Amazing. The neon was still very much running rampant (but not on me, I promise) as well as a few fairies here and there.

The event had four stages continuously blasting with sound and the LED displays were INSANE this year! Some tents boasted custom-made 3-D LED displays and mirrors to shower the dancing attendees with lasers to match the beats. All together, the grounds had 900 linear feet of LED panels, 850 automated light fixtures and 12 35-watt lasers, all powered by bio-diesel generators to minimize emissions into the ozone. Well done Made Event!

The kicker was the rocketship which raised Skrillex high above the main stage during his set, putting him on his own pedestal as King Of Dubstep. He closed out the festival on Sunday night, making us all feel like we were on another planet.

Many big names appeared this year, as usual, allowing us all to lose ourselves in the music for the weekend. Below were my 3 favorite acts at Electric Zoo — sadly I could not be at all stages to see all the acts, but the ones I did see fully satisfied my EDM craving beyond belief!

Also be sure to check out my roundup of most anticipated acts from this year’s festival here!

Knife Party got main stage status this year, and they did not disappoint. Formerly making up Pendulum, Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen had us all sore after dancing so damn hard during their set. Not to mention that quite a few other DJs at the festival played their track “Internet Friends” during their own sets — everyone knew the words and when the beat dropped.

New York City’s tiny but mighty Randall’s Island is about to get an electronic spanking. For the fourth year in a row, Electric Zoo is coming to New York City with full force and making sure we are all drenched in its downpour of bass, bleeps, treble, and wubs. It starts this Labor Day weekend on Friday and lasts until Sunday (8/31-9/02).

Although I missed the first year, I have attended for the last 3 years; there is nothing to compare this festival to. There is this intense and bright energy in the air that you sense as you walk onto the field, people falling into their ritualistic music comas while they hang onto the last bit of summer and dance until they cannot walk the next day.

Nostalgic for the late 90′s NYC electronic party scene, Electric Zoo is like a good old friend that comes by to make sure I have a fucking blast with every visit. The lineup is stuffed full of acts you should not miss. All information is found on the Electric Zoo site, along with ticket sales. It is going to be a gorgeous weekend in New York City to fall face first into some speakers!!

Don’t forget to download the free Electric Zoo 2012 App from the iTunes store for all set-times, food spots, first aid, booze locations, and of course the 4 stages.

Check out some of the talent below who will make the plastic floors under those tents crumble below!

What's so good?

Drop The Lime (aka Luca Venezia) will be drowning us with some raw bass on June 29 at Webster Hall in NYC, and being a bass-addict myself, I could not be happier. Luckily I had the chance to enjoy a nice cocktail and a chat with Luca about his upcoming DJ set this Friday.

Dressed in his signature black attire, with slicked back hair and suspenders, Luca walked up to me at Pegu Bar and checked out my shoes. After seeing the “what-the-hell?” look on my face, he goes to explain that he saw a chick wearing Crocs as he entered and thought it may have been me. We both just laughed.

The Trouble & Bass founder has some big projects in the works, including a tour coming up to hit the masses with a slap of rockabilly electro bass in the face! The tour for his album Enter The Night (dropping July 3 via Ultra Music) is starting in August and goes until September, ending at the big Trouble & Bass party at Webster Hall.

We get our drinks, a Manhattan for him and a bay leaf martini for me, and after realizing that we probably ran into each other at a few parties back in the day, we have a few laughs as we reminisce.

He spent some time in the mid to late 90s bouncing around the underground party (rave) scene in New York City. He fondly recalls the care Kid606 showed himself as a young artist by signing him to Tigerbeat6 Label and touring in Germany with him. He remembers boasting to his parents, “Mom and Dad, I got signed, so, umm, I am going to be famous.” And he was right.

So, where did Drop The Lime come from?
Back in the day when bookings happened over the phone and not email, I was going to do a set at Pianos as Walk The Line. When I showed up, I saw the listing and the fliers said Drop The Lime.

What was it like for you, when you first look up and see the whole venue moving because of you, the sound you were releasing?
No drug nor drunkenness can replace the energy you feel when the whole crowd is infected with your beat, when you are up there, screaming and throwing their hands in the air…you are giving them what they want and they in turn give you what you want. For me, the only thing that can come close to it is sex.

“But with the right person,” I say, and he agrees, “Right, yeah ok, with the right person. When you have that connection, its amazing and you kind of go somewhere else. Music has always been very sexual that way to me, when its like, you leave reality and you are lost in the moment.”

I know what you mean, for me it is when I am at a show that I can just leave reality in a way and melt into the music. Music and sex does have its parallels. Does the high continue for you after the show?
That is what happens — there have been times when I play a gig and I am throwing up after, like feeling crazy… so vulnerable. I do not want anyone talking to me. You put so much into it sometimes, you are just open, and I think it’s important to be open. That is kind of why I never let go of performance, of singing and talking with the crowd. It’s very easy to lose that organic feel, the human interaction with electronic music since it is so synthetic.

Swapping the energy with the crowd, do you feed off of it?
People shouting and yelling “Play this! Play that!” I love that, I love that camaraderie. It is a feeling I have never let go of, from my early rock’n’roll/punk days.

Is this what we are going to see at Webster Hall?
Oh I will, I will definitely sing and run around the stage. [Big smile across his face]

Will you play the N**gas in Paris remix you recently did? I have that on repeat!
Haha, yeah, I will play that. Definitely!

Until the tour starts, and the album drops on July 3, what are you up to this summer?
I am having a lot of fun DJing at some smaller venues too, I call the set [since people like to have names] drop-a-billy, which is bass edits with classic rockabilly songs. One dude straight up broke his leg at one party, he was dancing so hard me slipped and fell.

What are you listening to now?
Trailer Park Tracys, Jail Bait, Flosstradamus, and I love groups like Purity Ring. They have this electronic mix with Goth and her lyrics are pure poetry.

What is your next step in performing, how will you evolve?
Not losing touch with the music, having the show be more about theatrics, and having that organic feeling mixed with the lasers and the strobes. Combining a path that is more of a story than just being blasted in the face with lights continuously…and he is working on that.

—

We briefly talk about his admiration for burlesque shows both in NYC and a particularly good one at The Hole in Madrid. He recently did an EP with The Bloody Beetroots (!!!!) which I am dying to get my hands on and another surprise which we are keeping our lips sealed about, for now.

Being the good Brazilian that I am, I ask if he has ever had a ‘Surra de Bunda’ and he admits, he has not, so I guess now I spiked his curiosity to go to Brazil. Add some baile funk sounds to his repertoire, why not?

So kids, see you all at Webster Hall.

Oh, Electric Zoo. First off, let me say that I have not seen so much neon in all my life, not to mention how many girls had on booty shorts, with their 14-year-old asses hanging out. I had no clue I was going to be seeing so much flesh at the zoo! I made a mental note not to let my future daughter out of the house without a thorough bag search.

This past weekend, Randall’s Island hosted 85,000 sweaty, jumping, bass-seeking electronic music lovers and what a fantastic host it was. With such hugh names as John Digweed (whom I had the pleasure to interview), Armin van Buuren, and Tiësto, the festival was not missing any beats.

They filled up their lineup with newer artist as well. There was explosive and deliciously erratic dupstep, seamless progressive trance and hard bass seeping out of every tent. Plus, Made Event did a fabulously better job than last year with the stage set ups. Last year, you left there covered in dust (I had dust boogers and a much darker pigment to my skin). This year, they laid down plastic flooring and no dust clouds rose as dancers pounded every inch of the floors.

I left every day with music in my ears and my feet still skipping as I followed the masses, the glitter/neon wearing masses, into the subway home.

Here’s a list of the best emerging DJs I heard at the festival. Enjoy!

The NYC area is blessed with hosting Electric Zoo, the largest electronic music fiesta on the planet, for 3 days on Randall’s Island this Labor Day weekend for the third year in a row. I cannot contain the excitement that is building up inside of me!

I was lucky enough to attend last year as well and it was madness. This year, they have bigger stages and more acts rattling NYC with some major bass. The top dogs headlining the show will be David Guetta, Tiësto, and Armin van Buuren (so get your glow sticks out).

Voted the “Best U.S. Festival” by IDMA, this is an event that you will not forget and you also will kick yourself in the ass if you miss. You can view the line up, set times, and ticket information on Electric Zoo’s site.

Although we love the big boys who are well known and will surely end each night with their heavenly electronic sounds vibrating our bodies, we also want to make sure you do not miss the 10 acts below. They are some of my personal favorites, and who knows, I may even get a chance to meet some of them this weekend (jealous?).

Song:

The man who makes Parisians go nuts on the dance floor (often spins with Busy P) is going to be making a rare appearance in the US. I am told he does not visit us often, so do not miss him spinning!

Song:
Fake Blood - I Think I Like It
 [Download]

Who do we love? We love Fake Blood. Catchy little slogan huh?! No one really knows who the mysterious man they call Sang is. His self-description is priceless: “I make music – and I take your music and do what I want with it. If swallowed seek medical assistance. Will stain clothes. Will sound spectacular.” Questions, anyone?

Song:
MSTRKRFT - Heatbreaker (ft John Legend)
 [Download]

The Gods of remix will for sure give you a show you will never forget. The Canadian duo, Jesse F. Keeler and Al-P (Alex Puodziukas), have been making big moves since they joined forces in 2005.

Song:
Kid Sister - Big N Bad
 [Download]

Kid Sister has been making waves ever since she had Kanye West drop a few lines on her ProNails song. She is sassy, has a tight style and demands some respect. Part of the Fool’s Gold crew, she released her UltraViolet album earlier this year and is going to school us all on how a lady handles rhymes.

This beautiful man, Canada native Tiga James Sontag, impressed me with his slick beats and seamless transitions when I caught him spinning in NYC a few years ago.

Song:
Skrillex - SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES

Skrillex (a.k.a Sonny Moore) refuses to subject himself with a label regarding his music genre. He describes it as a mix of dubstep, electro and glitch all thrown together. Take a ride with his hard hitting track and you will not be disappointed.

Song:

He joins Dim Mak Records bringing his satanic yet well composed sound. After being compared to the likes of Daft Punk and Justice, Bloody Beetroots (Sir Bob Cornelius and Tommy Tea) have joined their ranks. Needless to say, love them.

Kid Sister has been making waves ever since she had Kanye West drop a few lines on her ProNails song. She is sassy, has a tight style and demands some respect. Part of the Fool’s Gold crew, she released her UltraViolet album earlier this year and is going to school us all on how a lady handles rhymes.

Skrillex (a.k.a Sonny Moore) refuses to subject himself with a label regarding his music genre. He describes it as a mix of dubstep, electro and glitch all thrown together. Take a ride with his hard hitting track and you will not be disappointed.

What's so good?

Her wounded rhymes make massive sounds. With her smooth, winding, physique, Lykke Li came on stage surrounded by the ocean of black cloth that cascaded down from the top of the stage at Webster Hall. The stage setting allowed this Swedish beauty to show exactly what she meant by this album: a strong woman who won’t put up with the male dominant record industry.

She is very clear on that point in the lyrics for “Get Some” — “Don’t pull your pants, before I go down. Don’t turn away, this is my time. Don’t make demands, I don’t take none. Just say a prayer that it gone get done. Like the shotgun needs an outcome. I’m your prostitute, you goin’ get some.” She has commented in interviews regarding this song and its message, showing her stern stand as a woman in the record business not bending over anyone.

Her first album, Youth Novels, was a beautiful newborn that took a strong hold of our ears thanks to her honey voice and producers like Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John and Lasse Mårtén. Now she’s come pouncing back, touring once again to promote her sophomore album, Wounded Rhymes.

Lykke Li entered the stage with a solid presence as indigo and deep green lights flashed all around her. The beginning chords for “Jerome” chimed out as the stage became invaded by dark pieces of cloth, creating a dark angelic effect — much like her attire in the “I Follow Rivers” video.

Her dark and soothing sound pounded our eardrums and made our hips romantically sway a little all night. She truly has this sad sexiness, a timid seductress almost — an oxymoron maybe, but true nonetheless. She seemed to effortlessly switch from melancholic love songs, like “Possibility,” to beating the drums hard in “Dance Dance Dance” and dancing around the stage in her black platform heels.

Covering most of her new album, as well as some older songs of hers such as a loud and energetic “Little Bit,” Lykke Li did not lose the audience’s attention. I also got some amazing footage of “I Follow Rivers” and “Sadness is a Blessing” (keep in mind I am not the tallest in the crowd and it can get bumpy).

You can clearly see the flowing fabrics on the stage by clicking on the link for her opening number “Jerome” and “I Follow Rivers” above. The girl really delivers a message of sad love, a hurting pleasure. The feeling that, while at times so haunting, it also makes you smile and be so thankful that you once felt a love like the kind she sings of.

My absolute favorite part of the whole night was when she sang “Until We Bleed,” because that song knows just how to bury itself under my skin. Hearing it live was like a religious experience. See some of the pictures I managed to snag here — I was oh-so close.

With her dark eyes, clothes, and hair, Lykke Li lets her art out in song… and no one is immune to its infection.

With her dark eyes, clothes, and hair, Lykke Li lets her art out in song… and no one is immune to its infection.

What's so good?

Wowsa, is it fair to say that I wanted to jump on stage and grab Luca Venezia (aka Drop The Lime) as he was setting up prior to the start of the show? Tastiness. The DJ/producer from Brooklyn made the whole crowd wild with his new sound and his Enter The Night album. The founder of the dance label Trouble & Bass came on stage dressed in black, with his slick back hair, gold teeth, and two female (foxy pin-up style) back-up singers that together ripped the Music Hall of Williamsburg a new one. This man makes me want to pretend like I am an extra on the set of Crybaby and channel a mean and spicy Betty Page.

Much like the single “Hot As Hell, ” his rockabilly/electro/drum/bass-infused sound sprayed the crowd with so much energy and gusto that everyone was dancing. My chest was still vibrating the day after the show.

Growing up in New York, I used to go to a lot of what we used to call “parties” but what you might refer to as “raves,” and I was a sucker for both hardcore and drum & bass. Listening to this show was like a punch to the gut that made me see stars and relive those wild teenage years where bass was king and dancing was queen.

At first, I thought the two luscious back-up singers were pure eye candy, but then the curvy vixen wrapped her red lips around a harmonica and spiked her sound into the opening number. To further excite the crowd, the girls belted out major notes, danced their asses off, and made every guy in the room (and a few ladies) hard as hell like a bad girl should.

We also got a surprise performance by Carrie Wilds performing “Set Me Free” and a man on the sax accompanying the performance of the song “Sex Sax.” I have seen Drop The Lime on numerous occasions, but this time, this amazing artist gave us a new sound and proved that music is always evolving.

What's so good?

In the name of the Father, the Son and the… Holy Ghost! I have been looking forward to seeing these guys live for some time now. When I heard the song “Hold On” early last year on the soundtrack for the HBO series How to Make It in America, I put it on repeat (it had a short stint as my ring-tone as well). Holy Ghost! was started by Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser, both formally of Automato — two New York artists that met in school as kids.

Lately the song that’s tickling my dance/disco bone is “I Will Come Back,” and I cannot tell you how electrified the attendants at the Music Hall of Williamsburg became upon hearing the first few notes. Although this song is not on the album, it was a huge thrill to see them perform it live, and I suggest you take a listen! I curse being born in a non-disco, non-80s era, and this concert held me in its arms and told me, “Fear not because Holy Ghost! delivers a funky, electro, soulful and booty bumping good time for you now, girl.”

The show was full of surprises, like the luscious vocals of LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang, who added a whole new layer to their sound. They did a Friendly Fires cover, “On Board,” which basically had the whole dance floor jamming in unison (except for one guy who might have been rolling his face off and was doing what can only be described as a “tree blowing in the wind move”).

Holy Ghost! continued to rock our bodies by playing all the songs off their album, including pulling at our heart strings with “Jam for Jerry,” dedicated to the late drummer Jerry Fuchs. When it came time for the encore, guess who decided to bless the stage with his smooth moves and debonair style? Chromeo band member Dave 1 whipped out his guitar and sent the crowd into a screaming frenzy. His brother, A-trak, was in the audience as well, watching big bro do his thaaaaang on stage.

All in all, not too shabby of a night. I’ve been a Holy Ghost! fan for life, and cannot wait to see them busting out the cowbells once more at a future concert.
