New York’s a state of mind, and it infected me early. When I was a wee lad, enthralled by the skyscrapers over the river, I skipped elementary school to take the subway from Astoria to the LES. I spent an entire day roaring after pigeons, climbing the stairs of any building I could find just to peer from the window. By the time the NYPD and my parents found me in the evening, inspired by The Pagemaster, I was battling imaginary dragons on the street with a syringe I’d found (which I imagined was a bayonet, naturally).

We left NYC soon after that (something about the city corrupting a fearless 8-year-old) and retreated to a land without public transportation. But that feeling of rawness and reeling the city gave me left a pulsating beat in my bloodstream, something that tracks like Urban Cone’s “New York” understand all too well.

You can take this track literally, or you can view it as a joyous electro-dance romp to reignite your passion for your figurative NYC. Either way, the song’s wistful beats trample the most hardened hearts with their bright lights appeal, all leading up to an undeniably fun chorus. Put your headphones on and walk through the city, and by the time that chorus comes along you’ll be opening your mouth, singing along and get smacked with that wonderful aroma of piss, smog and baked goods that make every urban center feel like home.

Say what you want about Rihanna – and there’s plenty to say about that generic, pitchy bullhorn that can make even the most emotional track sound bland — but she at least wields her considerable industry power to garner some amazing tracks that don’t slough on the side of safety. Sure, her performances don’t rock any of my boats, but the structures of her songs are so sound as to make some truly fucking exquisite covers.

For example, listen to The Bird and The Bee’s take on “Please Don’t Stop the Music” (which turns that boring banger into a desperately sexual flirtation) and Juveniles’ live folk cover (performed at PopCorn sur le Mouv in France) of recent mega-single “Stay.” The only part I paid attention to on “Stay” was Mikky Ekko, so I never felt the full impact of the song. Something about Rihanna’s stylings just makes me gloss over the words coming out of her mouth, but Juveniles has me tripping over myself to follow every syllable.

There’s so much that no one knows about me. It didn’t always used to be that way, and believe me, “I could tell you everything, [but you might] call me crazy.” Not the funny farm type of zaniness, but more the “dammnn gurrrrlll, wtf” variety — which has worked out well for me the last three years as I’ve been darting around the globe like a nihilistic, ne’er-do-well. But, eventually, I want to open up and let people in (as I’m assuming normal people do), and some of that has to come to light.

How much of you makes sense without some historical context? That’s the central tension and anxiety behind Jaymes Young’s brooding new single, “Dark Star.” In a post-dub universe, the track travels through the space of the soul, attempting to annihilate the dark matter within by exposing oneself bare. Young finds there’s a lot of risk involved in telling the origin story of a “heart born out of fire,” and the fear of it being all for nothing — leaving one to “drift [again] alone in the universe” — can be overwhelming.

It all boils down to a twisted and amazing single with no shortage of emotional meat, not to mention another perfect offering from Young (see the cover of Haddaway’s “What Is Love?” for proof). If you like this, follow the artist on SoundCloud.

There aren’t enough songs about the dark side of friendship. Most of Western music is caught in these monogamy blinders where it’s just you (my special person) and me “tralalalalala-ing” our way to Paradiso with no one else on the horizon for miles. Sure, romance has an inherent, explosive destructiveness that makes it rife for endless lyrical exploration; but friendship, that’s fertile territory for sweet, musical masochism.

Think about it: your friends know where the bodies are buried. That’s the basis of friendship, this mutually assured protection and destruction. Sure, losing a lover can make you weepy, but when friendships go awry it’s like looking for a place to rest and finding only a “barbell wrapped in a shirt, on the cold, solid ground” (Maps and Atlases’ “Solid Ground”).

Freedom Fry’s “Friends and Enemies” revels in the joy and terror of that vulnerability, leading to a contemplative track of exquisite depth. On their remix, Story of The Running Wolf take the track to the dance floor and plunder every corner of the song’s emotional core to make one hell of a deceptively ominous, good time. Much like friendship itself, SOTRW’s conceptualization of the track is full of intoxicating rushes belied by a low humming darkness just beneath the surface.

There are few artists that I can say have altered the course of my life like Absofacto. My first time listening to his album Sinking Islands was also during my first few rounds of chemo, and as inspired by the song “No Power,” I would “shuffle to the beep of my cardiograph” in the hospital to feel like the cancer didn’t have control over me.

It was an extraordinarily fortifying song for me, and I shared it like an evangelist around the ward with every patient I could find. Others responded positively and they started asking me to make playlists for them during their treatment. Eventually, that led to a volunteer effort I continue two years later: making playlists on request for cancer patients nationwide to use during radiation/chemo.

In a lot of ways, the trajectory of my life has followed Absofacto’s musical path. “No Power” belonged to a part of my life where I thought that there was nothing but endings, and “Möbius Strip (Thru My Fingers)” — his new song about the folly of saying goodbye fully — is a sentiment I’ve come to realize as true only recently.

“Möbius Strip” is a beautiful track that takes inspiration from the idea that a structure can exist that has no beginning or end; and if you begin walking along it you’ll end up right back where you started, ad infinitum. It’s stunningly frank and life-inducing. An amazing return to form for Absofacto after being gone from his work for nearly a year.

If you’re like me, Lykke Li’s Wounded Rhymes was on constant repeat until the vinyl wore its poor little soul out. That je ne sais quoi of her voice hearkened back to the era of Roseanne Cash and Karen Carpenter. In other words, it was motherfucking haunting. Rarely a week goes by that I don’t give “Jerome,” “Sadness is a Blessing,” and “I Follow Rivers” a spin.

So I’ve been waiting on baited breath for any new material from this Swedish goddess, and here it is — in the form of a collab with David Lynch. “I’m Waiting Here” sounds like an exploration of Wounded Rhymes themes with a bit of El Perro Del Mar‘s avant-gardeness.

Basking in warm wistfulness, with no rush to finish off or reveal all its emotional scars too quickly, this song’s production is laid out perfectly for the melancholic soul. Lykke Li’s subdued performance is breathtaking. Just wait until the perfectly timed spoken word part — you’ll melt into a puddle. “I’m Waiting Here” is easily one of the best Lykke Li tracks yet in her short but storied career, and that’s really saying something.

Believe me, I wouldn’t make this comparison unless I absolutely meant it — even if someone held my vinyl collection hostage over a urinal at a monster truck rally — but Parade of Lights has a pretty solid MGMT thing going on. (Bah, let’s hope that doesn’t re-ignite the epidemic of YouTube comments comparing every dance rock imaginable to MGMT — we just got over that plague!)

It’s actually a good thing they sound like a fresh version of MGMT, especially since MGMT has devolved into some super boring parody of themselves. Parade of Lights’ “We’re The Kids” announces itself onto the scene like, err, a parade of bright lights. The track features shining synths and a warmth perfectly belied by a melancholy undertone. Plus, that chorus — holy balls, that chorus — it’s like all the fun of fun.’s “We Are Young” without all the mainstream taint.

Parade of Lights is made up of some sought-after live show musicians, and we can clearly see why. Follow them on SoundCloud to hear more.

F Y F E has been on my radar for a while now (a big tap o’ the hat to Jason Grishkoff for helping me discover this guy). But in a year that’s quickly becoming a parade of wonderfully morose, inspirational male pop artists, he’s never been that strong a signal amongst shining stars like Josef Salvat, Deptford Goth, and Fryars. “Conversations” changes all of that.

“Conversations” plays a lot like the intense emotionality of Diplo and Lunice’s remix of Deerhunter’s “Helicopter,” except with a hopeful eye turned toward some unbeknownst future. It reminds me of a lot of conversations I’ve had with lovers, where fantasies of a relationship are just jokes in our imaginations. There’s no “he and I” in this situation, just him and his dreams and me and my dreams swirling around in the rawness of the moment.

F Y F E captures that feeling of connection/disconnection in the moment of two people using each other to momentarily let someone in, and let the world know who “they’re really meant to be.”

Oh, Parov Stelar, you’re so dreamy. You can even make a Llama — whoops, I mean Lana — Del Rey track into a magical experience. I mean, I told myself I’d never jump into the dog pile and knock elbows with LDR fandom by writing a review, but I’m absolutely drowning in the wonder of this “Dark Paradise.”

It’s not like I shouldn’t be a Lana Del Rey fan (since my internal world swirls and gushes often like a teenage girl), it’s just that I thought Nellie McKay did her shtick first and with more conviction (she was billed as a cross between Eminem and Doris Day in her heyday). But Parov Stelar’s recent remix of the Born To Die track (as well as the lyrics to said track) push me ever so slightly towards her camp in ways the Hannes Fischer mix of “Summertime Sadness“ almost did.

Parov Stelar gave the track a beautiful, clipping pace whereas the original plodded along like an overweight horse. But let’s also give some credit to LDR; seriously, these lyrics are stirring dark pop, falling just on the right side of morbidly romantic without careening into co-dependence (a feat few obsessive love songs really master). Plus, Parov Stelar makes LDR sound like she really has that twisted innocence mastered, no small feat.

I don’t think there is anyone harder on RAC than me. I’ve dedicated whole threads to parsing sub-par RAC mixes (as I’m sure a few Indie Shuffle fans can attest to) — not just because I don’t get reflexive love for any band, but because when he’s on he’s downright revelatory, and it’s important to highlight those moments.

I mean, some of RAC’s early mixes downright changed my entire view on the music scene and helped me see remixes as discovering undiscovered worlds rather than just adding some flair (I’m thinking of you, mixes of Foster The People ‘s “Houdini“ and Peter Bjorn and John’s “Second Chance“).

And I think RAC’s take on the 1978 classic by Sylvester, “You Make Me Feel Mighty Real,” is pretty stellar and a return to form. A lot of people like to think of the original as a happy-go-lucky record, but there was always an inherent loneliness swirling around just below the surface. RAC explores that by interspersing the feeling in layers throughout the song, and with some amazing synth work in the bridge.

This track is one of the casualties of Daft Punk week — you know, that entire week mid-May when anything not associated with a motorcycle helmet couldn’t gain any traction on the blogosphere? I remember STRFKR posting something on their FB to the effect of: “Hey! Yeah, you! Look over here! Now that you’ve listened to RAM, we’ve got remixes! Reeeeeeemiiiiixxxxxessssss!”

And I felt bad for them, because this Ben Aqua remix of “Leave it All Behind“ is fucking stellar. For me, it’s a return to what made me fall madly in love with STRFKR to begin with, namely dark electronica like “Julius“ and “Bury Us Alive.” I liked the new LP enough, but I don’t find myself listening to any of the tracks obsessively or continuously (I still listen to songs from Reptilians at least once a week, years later).

But this Ben Aqua remix is perfection of that order. It’s reminiscent of a few of the gritty mixes I’ve featured this year, including Until The Ribbon Breaks’ take on Tegan and Sara’s “Closer“ and the Brodinski remix of Woodkid’s “I Love You.” If you liked either of those, this song will surely get something in your pants moving, and by that I mean your legs, you filthmongers.

Turning their quintessential tropicalia inward and toward the ominous, Pacific Air succeeds in taking my favorite Magic Man track, “Paris,” into a dark pop summer anthem. A continuous, bubbling beat runs through the song, which sounds like an endless trickle of thoughts through your consciousness. Every once in a while drums and synths try to punctuate, but like logs and brush in a river, they get swept over by the current.

All of this works remarkably well with the track’s lyrical theme. “Paris” is a song about having to flee from love that grows and spreads inside you like a disease. Not that there is anything wrong with the love itself, but for a person in a fragile or recovering state, that kind of warmth can feel like the plague.  You could try and fight against its current, but that’s no use –your only two options are to run or to get swept away. On “Paris,” I love the strength he calls upon to run.

So, I’m in the minority here, but I thought HAERTS‘ debut single, “Wings,” went a little far over into that sickly sweet territory. I mean, if I was running a bath post-some monumental breakup, it would have been perfect, but for every day listening, its soft edges and effusively maudlin lyrics grated me a bit.

That said, “All The Days,” their new, just-released single (living on the seat of our pants, Shufflers!) falls into none of those traps. Soaringly anthemic with just the right amount of bittersweet heartache to it, “All The Days” trots through its four and a half minutes at an impressive clip, trampling me into submission. Those power of those drums can surely be not denied… they’ll mainline right into your heart.

More tracks like this, HAERTS, and your romantic side might just become totally anodyne to my cynical side. Hell, you might just even de-thaw my frigid heart.

I’m a bit of a Purity Ring fanatic. Well, aficionado is the PC term. I’ve collected every single track by them including originals, remix, collabs, and songs that sample them. Even though it’s becoming quite the swollen library at this point, I can’t help it; something about their saturnine sweetness took a hold of me the first I heard “Ungirthed,” and hasn’t let go.

So, I don’t how I missed Snowden covering “Fineshrine.” According to SoundCloud, it was posted 25 days ago, but I’m going to go with the belief that he just released it as public but kept it private for a nearly a month. Otherwise the Purity Ring fan club in my head might circle the wagons around me and feed me to some hyenas.

Regardless, Snowden’s cover works for the same reason that Purity Ring’s original does, despite being acoustic. And that’s because Snowden takes his guitar and wraps it around the lyrics like a suffocating  hug. By hewing to the band’s traditional fade outs mid-song, he captures the disarming,  innocent wonder of  Megan James’ vocal delivery that allows the band to get away with such morbid fascinations.

It just goes to show that at the heart of Purity Ring’s art is a darkly passionate love for life — no vocals or electronic tricks are needed to show it.

I covered Kids of The Apocalypse back when they were a just worldwide collective that appeared out of nowhere, albeit one with great promise and a video for a debut single that smacked of major label collusion. Then they disappeared for a few months. That is, until of nowhere, London Grammar uploaded this slamming remix of their now killer hit, “Wasting My Young Years.”

While I liked the original, it certainly dragged a bit in parts. But KOTA’s version never misses a beat, or lets you sit down for that matter. It’s a thunderous remake of a gut wrenching song that’s reminiscent of Until the Ribbon Break’s electronic moodiness, Ryan Hemsworth’s intricate passion, and Florence Welch’s charisma rolled into one.

On their second fare, KOTA prove once again that epic soundscapes are their aim. Now, if they’d only stick around long enough for us to get a feel for them, or break into their secret lair and discovery their identities. Because this guy (and I’m pointing a finger at myself) is utterly intrigued.

My reticence with José González has always come from annoyance that so many people thought The Knife were covering him when they performed “Heartbeats.” Scores of impassioned conversations later — and artificially inflating the YouTube numbers of The Knife’s vids by pointing at the screen and going “See! See! I told you!” — I and others I know still haven’t convinced people it’s the other way around. Liz Lemon eyeroll of the century, people.

So, for years now, I’ve sat quiet about the tracks that make my heart gush for González, until this Dinner Date remix of my favorite track, “Crosses,” brought me out of the critics closet. House remixes of folk tracks are a bit of a craze these days, between Oliver Koletzki’s remix of HVOB’s “Always Like This“ and Richard Aarden’s take on Ben Howard’s “Bones“ dominating my soundscape lately.

Still, it takes some skill to get the recipe right. These remixes are all about filling the empty space with new life, while not detracting from the dreamy tenderness of the original. Put another way, the folk versions are like gentle caresses in a lazy, Sunday morning afterglow, and the remixes are like recharging for a second round — do it right and you can give the track a second romp around the mind; which, incidentally, is what Dinner Date does so well.

Recently, a friend asked me if the new direction that When Saints Go Machine are taking made me throw any shade their way. And I thought, “How in any multiverse could it? They’re taking everything that made my favorite track by them (and eleventh favorite song of all time), “Fail Forever,” and extrapolating its essence out into a full LP.”

“Fail Forever“ is a song with a deep, inherent loneliness that never played weak. It’s lyrics and video inspire me endlessly, making its way into some of the cinematographic methods for a movie I’m soundtracking/writing.

New single “Iodine” plays right to my muse. It’s the kind of track made for solitary, urban wanderers that don’t dare to admit to (but swirl endlessly within) their own darkness. The beats bring a swagger to your heavy footsteps and girds your heart against the whips of the winds of a Danish winter. Lyrics are everything on this song, but you might need a guide, so read them here.

“The Ends,” a track from The Naked and The Famous’ debut LP,  always felt like a mantra of self-affirmation — much like the Serenity Prayer that’s so popular in America, without all the garbage nonsense interjected in it. Its lyrics are simple, with beautiful, auspicious austerity. It is the kind of mantra that soothes the soul during times of great change, death, or life.

Young Magic‘s remix (for the Remixes and B-Sides album out May 20, 2013) takes that idea and turns it into a swirling, heady hurricane that immediately turns the listener insular. Doubling the length and layering vocals upon vocals gives the track a cloistral feeling.

It’s the kind of music you listen to while trying to yoga it up and instantly inject yourself into your chi to find some jackass chakra that’s blocking you up.

I’ve covered Cull before — you know, those Australian rockers that sounded like if Tame Impala was finally able to chill and bliss the fuck out? (see: “I Thought We Was“ and “Good People Disappear.”) But this time they’ve really outdone themselves. This ain’t no ordinary dual single release, “Canker/If It Works” feels like the start of something much bigger than the band.

When I think of Australian rock, I see a genre looking way out and jumping across two ponds to a Eurocentric understanding of itself. But Australia isn’t Europe, and the more its music tries to emulate that scene, the more it will always be viewed as some kind of anomaly. I’ve always wondered what would happen if their music scene — much like what they are doing with their political identity — embraced their Asianness.

And that’s what “If It Works” does so damn well. Incorporating diversity of instrumentation like traditional oriental synths, mixed with vocal stylings that a band like From The Airport might take to the Seoul scene, “If It Works” looks out at the Indian Ocean with the same fierce determination that the cover art drawing has.

With “Canker/If It Works,” Cull shows they are ready to rumble as an inventive force of regional rock: eye markings, sweaty practices, and mind blowing tunes included.

I think Gorilla vs Bear put it best when they said the new Mikky Ekko track “swells.” It’s the kind of track that feels like an oxygen mask, blowing life into your lungs with each beat. It swells my tattered, liar heart and plays it like a lyre. And it’s such an expert player at that, all I can do is let re-energize me.

Everything about this song — from the repeating “ooh ahs” that sound angelic to the affirming lyrics — feels like a “fresh breath of innocence.” It’s a song about finding the sun in the cold wasteland of your life and having another take you away to disappear inside it. By the time I heard the exquisite synths on the bridge, I said to myself, “Holy shit, I’m powerless here,” all I could do was lay back in my desk chair at work and disappear in the track’s warmth.

I’m someone who works best with a little anger in their veins, which is why I like to have my music help me stare down the barrel of life by getting my fists pumping, my heart boarding a tank, and the bile boiling in the back of my throat. Lately, I’ve been calling that genre bitter power pop.

Carried on the strength of its soaring choruses and anthemic lyricism, this kind of music will make your soul shake down your struggles for their lunch money. And in my book, British newcomer Eilidh Hadden’s “Close to Home” is a perfect encapsulation of that strength.

“Close to Home” opens with spliced shouts laced with fearlessness, and then quickly waves in and out of anxious, tender verses. It ends up creating a confluence of emotion that feels a bit like those times when you’re faced with the insurmountable, and  you show the world a darkly, reserved smile but are trembling inside.

This demo was re-recorded on a kitchen table by a member of a band I reviewed last week, Lewis Gardiner from the equally exuberant Prides (check out “Out of the Blue“). As such, it’s an unassuming first taste of great things to come, I’m sure.

Only adept lyricists dare to tread into the topic of death. Balancing the weight of death’s sentimentality is a bit like keeping an elephant upright on the blade of a scythe: tip it one way and the eulogy becomes wooden, the other and it’s a hysterical affair. Songs about new life and love allow for error and missteps in production as that’s what life is all about; but death is about finality and closure, and as such begs an exacting science in its tracks.

Few artists clear that bar, but a few songs I hold as exemplary are Mirel Wagners’ “No Death,” Radical Face’s “All is Well (Goodbye, Goodbye)“ and The Antlers’ entire debut LP. Well, we can also add Houses‘ “The Beauty Surrounds” (and the Silent Rider remix to boot) to that list.

“The Beauty Surrounds” reminds me of this Ukrainian documentary about hospice patients that I helped soundtrack. The movie’s entire point was about the moment of realization in a person’s eyes when they didn’t deny their reality anymore. There’s a line in this song which captures that perfectly:

“There’s some lights in your eyes that I follow about
But they’re dimming quick, and you’re getting sick,
So now I wander out alone.”

Those lines are delivered so fantastically as to be just fucking devastating… oh, I can’t even handle them. Just so brilliant.

Hailing from Korea, From the Airport is a band out to prove that Far East has kickass melodies that can compete with any Western band. I’ve always felt like the Asian indie world is a vastly underrepresented, and it’s  my goal  in the next year to fix that, kicking off my mission with this awesome new band with a plan for greatness.

Working with master engineer Chris Athens of Coldplay and Usher fame (oh, yeah, just *that* guy — no big deal), From the Airport emulate the frantic rhythms and psychedelic atmospherics of bands like Passion Pit, Strange Talk, TDCC, and Cull beautifully.

On “Timelines,” the band crafts a single that lifts you right into the sky befitting their name. “Timelines” is an energetic track all about fighting your body and mind for the chance to lift off, and recognizing that struggle in others as well. The song is replete with a chorus/verse structure that brings to mind resting, fallow periods and the bursts of energies that we use to cross the finish line and that make us feel alive.

Recently there has been a spate of remixes to The Other Tribes’ “We Should be Dancing“ circulating their way through my SoundCloud feed, with nearly all of them exploring the smooth, albeit safe, parameters of the original. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the original, but I felt like it was a single that fought against itself. It wanted to send to your ears the clean melodies of Cut Copy, but at its heart was a filthy little dance track that get its power from its rough edges.

There’s a point in the chorus where the singer’s voice breaks, shattering the façade of perfection that drives the production. But beneath that sheen of false imperfection is where the heart of the track lies. Ryan Riot gets that on his remix and doubles down on it to awesome effect. Amplifying the bassline to give the track some Peter & The Magician vibe, Ryan Riot turns the song into a smorgasbord of sexuality sure to feed the appetites of many a hungry heart on the dance floor.

So, did you hear about this last night? CHVRCHES had MS MR‘s baby, and gave birth to it on Annie Halls’ BBC show in a gale force of bloody awesomeness. Granted, one could just say they remixed “Hurricane” and premiered it on the BBC, but what’s life without a bit of innuendo and double entendre?

Turns out this rework of “Hurricane” is amazeballs — which is saying a lot coming from someone so protective of the original that other attempts were insta-enemies to my ears.

You’d think the song would suffer from being socked in the face with a smattering of synths, but CHVRCHES take the track’s original sentiment — waking up from a deep slumber in your mind’s darkest places — and speed up the process until we’re a few steps into the future.

So, did you hear about this last night? CHVRCHES had MS MR‘s baby, and gave birth to it on Annie Halls’ BBC show in a gale force of bloody awesomeness. Granted, one could just say they remixed “Hurricane” and premiered it on the BBC, but what’s life without a bit of innuendo and double entendre?

Turns out this rework of “Hurricane” is amazeballs — which is saying a lot coming from someone so protective of the original that other attempts were insta-enemies to my ears.

You’d think the song would suffer from being socked in the face with a smattering of synths, but CHVRCHES take the track’s original sentiment — waking up from a deep slumber in your mind’s darkest places — and speed up the process until we’re a few steps into the future.
