This latest jam from Beach Fossils is part of their new 7″ that drops on February 21. “Shallow” is a continuation of the breezy surf pop that characterized their 2010 debut, yet here their sound comes across as tighter and more fully formed. Perhaps taking a cue from their musical kindred spirits, Real Estate, “Shallow” shows Beach Fossils taking baby steps out of the bedroom in favor of a richer production value.
This cleaned up studio quality allows the track’s sunny jangle and catchy melody to shine through even brighter, showing a band with purpose and promise. Does it sound a little like a poor man’s version of “It’s Real” by the aforementioned Real Estate? Sure it does. But hey, that song kicks ass, and I challenge anyone to listen to this one without pressing the replay button at least a few times.
