What's so good?

I’ve always loved the Calgary Folk Fest. You can’t go wrong lying in the grass while taking in great music on Princes Island Park. It kinda makes you forget you’re in the middle of the city.
This year’s folk fest brought alot of diverse acts, from Chris Isaak to Rural Alberta Advantage mixed, and even a side of hip-hop.
Here’s a playlist of some of the bands I enjoyed the most. We’re already looking forward to next year!
"Justin Townes Earle - Mama's Eyes"
Son of famed musician Steve Earle, Justin Townes Earle puts his own unique spin on folk music, and was a favorite of many festival goers I talked to.

"Rural Alberta Advantage - Under The Knife"
Hailing from Toronto, RAA was a crowd favorite. Their 2008 album Hometowns featured songs named after and about cities and towns surrounding Calgary, which had the local fans excited. There were 3 or 4 songs of theirs that I recognized, and "Under The Knife" was one of them.

"Blitz The Ambassador - Native Sun ft. Shad"
Originally from Ghana and now based in Brooklyn, Blitz The Ambassador has tons of energy on stage and kills it with a live band. One standout track was a mashup that included classic verses from Rakim, Nas, and one of my favorite Big Punisher verses "Dead in the middle of little italy..." Lets just say the crowd was really into this guy!

"Dan Mangan - Robots"
Drawing comparisons from Chad VanGaalen to Bon Iver, Dan Mangan is starting to make a name for himself in the indie-rock / folk music scene.

"The Barr Brothers - Beggar In The Morning"
This folk quartet is from Montreal, I hadn't heard of them before I saw them live but I was extremely impressed with their sound and made a note of adding them into my regular rotation.
