Cary Nokey

Burn The House Down

Sounds like: Rick James, Baltimora, Dee D. Jackson, Alphaville
I've being storing this review for awhile and there is no particular reason why I feel today is the correct time to release it.I saw this alternative-pop duo live in Brooklyn, New York's The Paper Box a couple of weeks ago, and my first impression of the eclectic duo was that their sound was decent and their appearance quirky. One bandmate, Ali in Da City, sports a vintage afro and the other, 8 Bit, resembles a fashionista Kurt Cobain.Despite my initial reaction, I decided to perch at the bar and make an effort to listen. I am glad that I didn't immediately write the band off simply because of their appearance or their post funk sound (which isn't normally my cup of tea). In fact, the quality of their sound and the raw expressive lyrics that were beautifully tangled among piano-synths, crash cymbals and electric guitars captivated my attention quite quickly. For each song, Cary Nokey's performance offers a lively presentation of electric and attitude. Picture a mountain of energy pulsating and stalling, right before it crashes atop of the crowd. Thankfully, they live up to their title and do bring the house down.
