All too often it seems the releases are more an attempt to fit a genre/scene and generate “mad hits” versus serve as an expressive outlet of art, energy, or passion. Considering this current atmosphere of indie music, Man/Miracle’s edgy, vigor-soaked rock LP, The Shape of Things, is an essential quencher to dry neglected receptors.

HEALTH::DISCO2 is just as wacky and unpredictable as Health and the flock of characters they got to do the remixing are. The stems of the original tracks are buried in their somewhere, but each tune is a chance for the remixer to show their style, rather than an attempt to turn Health’s grinding noise into something suitable for the dance floor.

If you’re a big fan of Hella or Wavves or any of Zach Hill’s other projects, you’ve probably had this album in hand for months. For all you that have been cranking this on your speakers all that time, feel free to skip this review, but if you haven’t listened to this CD you better hop on it right away. I was one of the less fortunate ones and only had this album recommended to me last week, but it’ll certainly be in my listening rotation for a long while. If you’re a fan of HEALTH or Battles I’m sure you’ll agree.

The noise may be grating at times, but with every new release HEALTH is doing more with sound and music than most artists probably think is possible. And not only are they knocking down boundaries, but achieving a modicum of success while at it.

Have you ever turned on a song that you liked so much that you said, ‘Jesus Christ, this band rocks!’ before getting 20 seconds into the song? A song so good that as the music washed over your body, you felt the waves tingle down your spine? When a band can make that happen, and then continue to keep you awstruck passed that 20 second mark, you’re onto something. Still life Still nails it.

This is far from a musical masterpiece. Simple song-writing, cheesy lines, and fuzzed out sound. It’s essentially two guys cranking everything to eleven and rocking with reckless abandon. That’s kind of the genius behind this album though. It’s full of a pure cathartic angst coated in sweet pop innocence.
