RJD2 gets the nod for best remix with his jam that makes Yo La Tengo feel right at home in your favorite underground jazz club. Ira Kaplan’s vocals sound perfect over the Hammond organ, slick guitar riffs, and funky baseline. The new drum track is the real clincher that somehow converted a song by Yo La Tengo into my new favorite disco ballad.

A metro area local, Alex Vans is a guitarist/singer/songwriter who, according to lore, has attempted and failed at engaging in deviant liaisons with at least 7 different members of Congress. A bungle in sexual policymaking, perhaps, but what Vans lacks in “Hill Climbing” skill, he more than makes up for with his musical chops.

The first time I encountered Gayngs was when Hannah suggested that we write a review about them in the context of “music to have sex to”. The second time I heard Gayngs was at a smooth jazz/90s party where, quite appropriately, they had been selected to segue into a more modern array of genres as the night progressed/devolved.

There’s a good chance you’ve already heard the hype for Flying Lotus’s new album by now. If you’ve ignored it, don’t. This is the real deal. For those of you who haven’t: Flying Lotus, or Steven Ellison, is an experimental electronic producer who’s beats you might recognize form Adult Swim’s trippy late night image freezes in between commercials. “Cosmogramma” is his third full-length release, which Warp Records has been calling a “space opera.”

Sounds like: Nataly Dawn, The Bird and the Bee, Regina Spektor, Jack Conte Loading… What’s so good? Indie jazz group Pomplamoose first caught my attention with their rather surprising cover of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone”, which was covered per my recommendation on The Music Ninja. I instantly went out to grab their album, only to realize [...]

Another “Broken Social Scene” spin-off! It’s really no surprise that the largest band in history continues to give fledgling Canadian artists an opportunity to boost their solo careers. Like her comrades Leslie Feist, Emily Haines and Amy Millan, “Reverie Sound Revue’s” vocalist Lisa Lobsinger has toured with “Broken Social Scene” for a number of years, taking time to release an EP in 2003, and finally thisfull-length in 2009.

Take Kings of Concenience, and give them some funk. Somehow this group manages to keep things upbeat, dancey, cutting-edge-indie, and yet totally chill. Perhaps it’s the clean sound of the guitars, the grooving keyboard, or (most likely) the mellowed out vocals of their frontman. Word around the webnet is that the band took a more ‘organic’ approach to recording, with all of the tracks being done live with no overdubs or additional effects. I think you’d be hard pressed to find another band doing the same thing these days.
