Song: Little Daylight - Glitter And Gold [download here]

I had the good fortune of being the first person on SoundCloud to repost this new track by Little Daylight, “Glitter And Gold.” Yeah, yeah, I know you’re saying to yourselves “Take off those hipster sunglasses, Kavit, so we can throw some shade your way.” But that’s how closely I watch this little band that’s clearly proving they can.

“Glitter and Gold” is an explosively dynamic good time, full of colorful synths that shoot at the mind like fireworks. A bit like CHVRCHES without the bitterness, the song plays like a self-affirming anthem for the crowd that’s just learning to let go of life’s seriousness—of which, I claim myself a member.  ”Glitter And Gold” is all about tapping into that electrical spirit within one’s self and letting burst all over a stage, a dancefloor, or your bedroom.

Unchain yourself, you animals, and fly like a meteor over to Little Daylight’s SoundCloud page. They’re deserving of being followed.

The last time I heard someone successfully tackle Blackstreet’s 1996 hit “No Diggity” was when Chet Faker did an amazing rendition of the song way back in May of 2011. Fortunately UK-based Bondax are here to inject a bit of life back into an otherwise perfect single.

Clearly there’s a lot of good music coming out of the UK, and I think no stronger comparison can be drawn when assessing this song than to bring up Disclosure. Both groups are a duo; both groups are super young (teens/early-20s); both have an amazing future UK sound.

Net-net, Bondax deserve this SOTD the slot, though I’m not exactly surprised — the second I saw this show up in my feed I knew it’d make it.

I’m sure we can all agree that Grimes’ “Oblivion” is absolutely perfect the way it is. So, I’m not saying that this particular cover by dream folk act Wilsen is better than the original — but, it is no doubt a brilliant and haunting take on one of last year’s biggest songs.

So let’s get to know Wilsen a little better shall we? To start with their lead female vocalist Tasmin Wilson is both Canadian and British, with the entire group residing in New York funnily enough. They’ve only just finished their tour supporting a big name act (Daughter), after releasing their debut mini album series Sirens.

This “Oblivion” cover comes from the b-side of their recently released single “Dusk” (off aforementioned album), and was definitely of most interest to me personally. The cover retains it’s levels of dreaminess, but has been stripped down to reveal a certain delicacy and fragility with it’s subtle instrumentation and Tasmin’s ghostly vocals.

Much to look forward to from these guys as I’m sure you’ll agree.

Duets sometimes make me think of elementary school music class, with half the room slated to sing one line, half told to respond to the song’s call. Not a bad musical approach, but it’s often used as a clumsy mechanism to get two good artists together to make one… okay track.

Not so with “Homage,” a collaboration between Feist and Timbre Timbre. The track is the newest release from Arts & Crafts X, a collaborative project from the Canadian label that features efforts from artists such as Broken Social Scene, Chilly Gonzalez, and Stars.

Compared to many of the others released, “Homage” is a stripped down effort, highlighting the striking vocals of Taylor Kirk (of Timbre Timbre) and Leslie Feist. Kirk, with his rumbling, guttural tones is an incredible match for Feist’s rich, warbling vibrato – their voices shine on their own, and weave together to form the gorgeous foundation of a folk song for the ages.

At first, the two are accompanied by the trills of lone guitar. But in the song’s final minute, “Homage” is inflated from a lovely folk ditty to a big-sound epic, helped by the swelling thrum of additional string lines and an insistent drum beat. What’s lasting, though, is the comedown — the track ends with twin vocals, twin guitars, and the pounding of two feet stomping to the beat.

Back when I started doing the Song of the Day series, we would quote other blogs rather than writing our own reviews. That changed after ~6 months, but it means that there’s a whole back-catalog of amazing music on Indie Shuffle that just doesn’t have the original content it deserves

Case and point: “Right On,” off The Roots’ great album How I Got Over, which included contributions from the likes of Bright Eyes (Monsters of Folk), John Legend and Blu. I know what you’re thinking: “Ugh, another Daft Punk interpretation?” But bare with me…while remixes are dime-a-dozen at this point, Beats Antique have teamed up with Charles Butler to do something pretty original.

It all started when Charles Butler shared a banjo-only version of the song with his fans (here). Given that Charles inspired David from Beats Antique to play banjo, it wasn’t long before the band got into the mix and cleaned it up for the current state.

It’s certainly a little slower than most versions of this song, but after a couple listens I’m beginning to like the pace.

Poolside’s new song “If We Make It” was released a couple days back as part of a compilation for Scion (that’s right, the car company).

Perhaps it’s because it’s not for their own release — but ultimately this track is so-so. Still, I have mad respect for these guys as a band, and given Saturdays are pretty darn slow, figured it wouldn’t be so bad to make this the Song of the Day.

Worst case scenario: this kicks off an awesome daytime disco playlist. And who can complain about that?

Poolside’s new song “If We Make It” was released a couple days back as part of a compilation for Scion (that’s right, the car company).

Perhaps it’s because it’s not for their own release — but ultimately this track is so-so. Still, I have mad respect for these guys as a band, and given Saturdays are pretty darn slow, figured it wouldn’t be so bad to make this the Song of the Day.

Worst case scenario: this kicks off an awesome daytime disco playlist. And who can complain about that?

Sometimes the best songs are flashbacks. And in this case, Beirut’s “Guaymas Sonora” is hitting the spot.

Apart from the fact that I’ve got a huge crush on San Cisco’s drummer, I’m also quite digging this cover that they did of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.”

We’ve covered the Aussie-based band a number of times by now, most frequently pointing out the fact that they’re mostly teens (are they still?). So, when I saw that their cover of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” (via Triple J) had hit the front page of Reddit yesterday, I knew quite quickly that there was going to be some magic taking place.

Overall, renditions of this song are dime a dozen. That said, San Cisco have done something unique here: from the bongos to the splicing of another Pharrell song into the mix, the end result passes as a cover I’m willing to share (noting of course that I tend to shy away from live recordings for quality issues).

Bottom line is: holy shit I love Danger Mouse’s production! At this point everything indie rock he has touched has turned to gold. The Black Keys, Electric Guest, Foxygen and Broken Bells: all money.

Portugal. The Man were good to begin with, but I highly recommend listening to this album in full. It might just step up your appreciation a whole knotch more.

Who is Quadron? They’ve been getting a whole lot of attention lately, but we haven’t put them in the limelight. This collab with Kendrick Lamar sure makes the cut, though.

Believe it or not, these silky R&B tracks are coming from Danish duo Coco Maja Hastrup Karshøj and Robin Hannibal. They released their first album Quadron in 2009, and are gearing up for a release on June 4th titled Avalanche.

If you’re digging what you hear, I’d definitely recommend you check out this track “Sea Salt,” and then pre-order the album here.

It’s a public holiday in the United States today. And while I’m not living there, it appears that most artists throughout the world are playing it smart: they’re aware that web traffic is slower today, and so they aren’t releasing any new tracks.

But fear not! There’s still good music to be had. I’ve had this one saved on the back burner for some time now as a potential Song of the Day, and finally it gets to see the light of day.

Three years have passed since Four Tet remixed “Melody Day” by Caribou (off the 2007 album Andorra). The original had a bit more of an upbeat tempo to it, whereas Four Tet turns it into something worthy of Sunday Night Chill. Either way, still good.

It’s a public holiday in the United States today. And while I’m not living there, it appears that most artists throughout the world are playing it smart: they’re aware that web traffic is slower today, and so they aren’t releasing any new tracks.

But fear not! There’s still good music to be had. I’ve had this one saved on the back burner for some time now as a potential Song of the Day, and finally it gets to see the light of day.

Three years have passed since Four Tet remixed “Melody Day” by Caribou (off the 2007 album Andorra). The original had a bit more of an upbeat tempo to it, whereas Four Tet turns it into something worthy of Sunday Night Chill. Either way, still good.

Earlier this month we picked up on a new indie pop quartet out of LA called WALLA. The first song off their Nature EP was titled “No Time,” and had a sound not unlike Empire of the Sun.

Flash forward a couple weeks and the title track off the EP is now available. “Nature” has a slightly different tone to the former single — this one kicking things off with a distinctive and upbeat guitar lick. The sound is undeniably “Australia,” but not in that aforementioned Empire of The Sun Way; I’d have to peg this closer to Last Dinosaurs…

Comparisons aside, Walla appear to be forging a path of their own. Chances are you’ll be seeing more of them in the near future!
