Ah, yes! I’ve been waiting what seems like a musical eternity for this song to go official. Charlie XCX fans might recall this track was released over a month ago exclusively on BBC Radio 1 and available to us as a rip. But glory days! Charli fans, you can now enjoy the track without the smoothly urbane of BBC’s DJ’s interrupting your sounds.
“You (Ha Ha Ha)” samples a Gold Panda track of the same name to smashing success. Recently, for me, Charli’s singles have felt a little unfocused to me, while the tracks she wrote for others, namely Icona Pop‘s “I Love It“ went to top the indie charts. But give this woman a sample to splice, and she makes what she calls some pure, unadulterated ‘angel pop.”
Over skittering beats that recall nostalgia as they propel you into the future limits of 2013, Charli XCX gives us one scorcher of a torch song. Masking a melancholic vindictiveness in the titular “ha ha has” of the chorus, she details the breakup of a boy who just ‘fucked it up.” This track easily has the same earworm potentiality as Nuclear Seasons, and in fact, I would say this track is the first one she’s released to be superior to her debut single (that was a high bar to get over, mind you).
If you like the new single, grab a free download at her SoundCloud and check out the YouTube video as well. Man, I’m going to be happy dancing to this track all day….
