The first time I saw a preview for NBC’s comedy Community during the pre-season network push, I didn’t know what to think. Thankfully, my love for Chevy Chase superseded any preconceptions that I had of Joel McHale, and I watched the pilot. I have been hooked ever since.
It follows the life and times of sleazebag Jeff Winger (played by McHale), who lost his high paying job as a lawyer due to a faulty degree. Jeff is forced to return to community college to get his life back. On the way, he crosses paths with a group of diverse/daft individuals via a Spanish study group in order to hook up with one of the members. The study group ends up becoming great friends, and finds themselves in crazy situations due to all of their inherent differences.
The study group consists of a divorcee, a high school football star, an emotionless pop-culture savant, a Type A goody two-shoes, a politically active college dropout, an untactful baby boomer, and the aforementioned sleaze bag lawyer. Not your typical group of friends, but they definitely make for some great TV.
The show also finds itself steeped in music — whether it be the theme song performed by The 88, or the fact the indie rapper Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover happens to play one of the main characters on the show. The first season of Community also featured some great music, from Matt & Kim’s smash hit “Daylight” to the song “Fast Jabroni” by indie rockers Surfer Blood (to name a few!).
Unfortunately, the October 19 Season 4 premiere has been delayed until an undisclosed time by NBC, so check out some of the musical highlights from the Community soundtrack – Season 1 to hold you over.
