What's so good?

I’m a bit of a Purity Ring fanatic. Well, aficionado is the PC term. I’ve collected every single track by them including originals, remix, collabs, and songs that sample them. Even though it’s becoming quite the swollen library at this point, I can’t help it; something about their saturnine sweetness took a hold of me the first I heard “Ungirthed,” and hasn’t let go.

So, I don’t how I missed Snowden covering “Fineshrine.” According to SoundCloud, it was posted 25 days ago, but I’m going to go with the belief that he just released it as public but kept it private for a nearly a month. Otherwise the Purity Ring fan club in my head might circle the wagons around me and feed me to some hyenas.

Regardless, Snowden’s cover works for the same reason that Purity Ring’s original does, despite being acoustic. And that’s because Snowden takes his guitar and wraps it around the lyrics like a suffocating hug. By hewing to the band’s traditional fade outs mid-song, he captures the disarming, innocent wonder of Megan James’ vocal delivery that allows the band to get away with such morbid fascinations.

It just goes to show that at the heart of Purity Ring’s art is a darkly passionate love for life — no vocals or electronic tricks are needed to show it.

What's so good?

It happens all too often that we’ll review a track here on the Shuffle, and for whatever reason (usually the artist or label takes it down) the track disappears, resulting in an empty link. I don’t know about you, dear listeners, but when this happens it always makes me feel desperately helpless and entirely disappointed. But alas, with every grey cloud comes a sliver lining.

Greco-Roman has filled the recent void where Valentina’s “Ladders” used to be, replacing it with this remix by David E. Sugar, and oh glorious feel-good sounds — it’s just great. We can all enjoy Valentina’s pitch-perfect voice once more, set amidst a twinkling atmosphere of hopeful, vaguely tropical, key stabs and uplifting melodies. I’m really enjoying this one, and I hope you do, too.

Valentina’s Wolves EP is available now via iTunes, but the date for when this remix will be available isn’t set, so keep up to date at Greco-Roman’s Facebook, and enjoy those silver-linings.

What's so good?

What’s this? A bonus track from Daft Punk’s Japan release of Random Access Memories? Yep!

A downtempo ambient song with somewhat of a mellow Pink Floyd / 80s feel, the single appears to be a great follow-up for the somewhat intense album closer “Contact.”

As a stand-alone, it’s a bit of a “meh” track. But, as part of the complete picture, I really wish this song had actually been the closing track on the full album.

What's so good?

I covered Kids of The Apocalypse back when they were a just worldwide collective that appeared out of nowhere, albeit one with great promise and a video for a debut single that smacked of major label collusion. Then they disappeared for a few months. That is, until of nowhere, London Grammar uploaded this slamming remix of their now killer hit, “Wasting My Young Years.”

While I liked the original, it certainly dragged a bit in parts. But KOTA’s version never misses a beat, or lets you sit down for that matter. It’s a thunderous remake of a gut wrenching song that’s reminiscent of Until the Ribbon Break’s electronic moodiness, Ryan Hemsworth’s intricate passion, and Florence Welch’s charisma rolled into one.

On their second fare, KOTA prove once again that epic soundscapes are their aim. Now, if they’d only stick around long enough for us to get a feel for them, or break into their secret lair and discovery their identities. Because this guy (and I’m pointing a finger at myself) is utterly intrigued.

What's so good?

You can always count on Jacques Greene’s heavy beats to get your body moving. This Canadian producer’s been throwing down insane remixes from all across the board of soulful, electronic R&B singers and takes it even further with his new track titled “On Your Side,” featuring the gorgeous croons of Tom Krell of How To Dress Well.

His electronic elements are definitely taken to more experimental territory, but it works in his favor because the combination of the two’s aesthetics create a gorgeous range of sounds that will totally make you swoon. Uptempo garage beats? Yes please. Lustful falsettos? So into it.

Upon listening, it’s clear that this track showcases what these two do best: Greene lays down the killer beat groundwork and Krell provides beautiful vocals to gently rest on top. Basically, with these two on a track you really can’t go wrong.

French producer Monsieur Adi has been filling the Indie Shuffle archives with awesome remixes including the killer Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness” and Swiss Lips “U Got The Power.” So, I can’t say that I’m surprised that I’m totally feelin’ this rad rework of Say Lou Lou’s “Julian.”

I’ve heard this song a couple times throughout my recent music searches and have come to find that this specific version fills my perpetual need for danceable electro beats quite perfectly. This dynamic duo from Sweden has already caught the attention of many with their striking good looks and formidable ballads, but Monsier Adi gives their track a fresh makeover, igniting it from your typical moody dance track to a late night electro house banger.

What's so good?

Every time Melbourne-based I’lls release something new, I think to myself, “This is it for them right? They can’t improve on this one!” Then they go ahead and do just that.

The classically trained trio released their debut EP Thread back in 2011, and their second, A Warm Reception, is due out on June 17. The EP’s first single, “Plans Only Drawn,” was featured on Indie Shuffle back in March, and they’ve just released another absolutely delectable track.

“Speak Low” is an introspective masterpiece; the warmth this track gives off is unbelievable. Everything about it creates a fantastical dreamscape — from the deep bass riffs, to the withdrawn percussion and gentle keys, all the elements are balanced to perfection. Simon Lam’s vocals drift in and out throughout; you couldn’t have a different voice on this track.

To wrap this up, I write about music that I like, so there’s nothing new about me saying that this is a good band. But, I’lls aren’t just a good band — they’re a special one.

TV Soundtrack: Awkward Season 1, Ft. Wavves, Ellie Goulding + More

I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a more awkward time in my life than when I was in high school. Thankfully, my awkward times in high school can’t even compare to those of Jenna Hamilton from MTV’s teenage comedy Awkward.

Starring Ashley Rickards as the super ill-fated Jenna, Awkward follows the craziness that poor Jenna just can’t avoid as she chases her dream boy. The show is like PG version of the American Pie series crossed with My So Called Life, filled with plenty of hilarious moments, like parents helping high-schoolers throw ragers, pink eye being spread in hot tubs, and a full-on neckbrace/arm cast combination, to name a few.

I know that MTV no longer centers itself on playing music videos, but luckily shows like Awkward have killer soundtracks (as pointed out to me by fellow Shuffler Hugh), so I guess I’ll cut the network some slack. The first season included some huge artists like Ellie Goulding, Wavves, Fake Problems and the Antlers, but also featured some up-and-coming bands like Tiny Animals, Geographer, Royal Bangs, Big Scary, The Pass, and Dinosaur Feathers. These all come together for a pretty awesome playlist.

What's so good?

“Short and sweet” isn’t a phrase often connected with techno, but Dakota Bones is changing our perspective on the matter with his track “Samurai.” This song is two minutes and 36 seconds of vibalicious, pre-1998 electronic glory.

To emphasize, Bones has put together some visuals in much the same vein, and as simple as the video may be, its looped footage and squiggly madness is just intriguing enough to watch over and over.

Now, as of late I’ve been playing a lot of Nintendo. A friend of mine clued me into that nifty emulator and I’ve been diving back into the 8-bit past as if to preserve some lost form of procrastination. It’s no wonder then that “Samurai” is appealing to my senses. It’s not 8-bit itself, but after an hour of Bad Dudes, “Samurai” is the perfect segue and ideally what Nintendo probably had in mind if it weren’t for digital music limitations. What do you think?

For the un-initiated, Ras_G & The Afrikan Space Program are direct descendants of Sun Ra’s lineage. Cosmic and aloof, timely and out-of-time, Le Sonny Ra blazed a trail unmatched by anyone before or after. He is still progressing and contributing years after leaving his physical shell.

L.A.’s astral beat-head pays tribute to his Uncle Ra by collaborating on a track celebrating his musical Master Teacher’s arrival day. Along with a other-worldly arrangement, he also shares some choice words from the man who was not a man, but a musical being:

“I’m not a minister, I’m not a philosopher, I’m not a politician, I’m in another category.

Primavera Sound 2013: Thursday Preview

Perks of running a music blog full-time? Following the music, of course! And in this case, I’m fortunate enough to be able to make my way over to Barcelona for the Primavera Sound music festival, which takes place later this week (tickets still available here).

Things officially kick off today, but given there are only ~15 bands playing, I figured I’d skip to Thursday. It seems to have a mostly indie-rock slant, and I can’t even count how many bands are playing. Here are the acts I’ll be making sure not to miss:

Poolside: 6.30pm on the Ray-Ban stage. Daytime disco dance party anyone? Please!

Tame Impala: 8.30pm on the Heineken stage. Ready to drift away in a psych-rock haze, and then probably get dinner.

Jessie Ware: 9.55pm on the Pitchfork stage. But there’s some competition — Dinosaur Jr. and Do Make Say Think. Will probably catch some of the latter, who start 20 minutes before Jessie on the ATP stage.

The Postal Service: 10.55pm on the Heineken stage. Absolutely can’t miss this High School flashback.

Grizzly Bear: 12:15am on the Primavera stage.

Phoenix: 1.40am on the Heineken stage. Alright, this is starting to get late. 7 hours in now? Must. Keep. Going.

Four Tet: 2.25am on the Pitchfork stage. Am I getting too old for this?

Animal Collective: 3.10am on the Heineken stage. The last time I saw them it was amazing. Might have to try again.

John Talabot: Okay, this is pushing it. 4.15am? I might have to call it a night…

What's so good?

Are you as excited as I am for Pure Bathing Culture’s newest single, “Pendulum?” If you’re not yet, then I think you’ll understand why I am after reading this.

This track is gorgeously glimmering, with the perfect balance of synths, drum machines, acoustic guitar, a lovely bass line and lusciously ethereal vocals. This is the type of song you turn on when you’re looking to tune in and tune out. There’s an undeniably breezy and light quality to the character of this song — it’s slightly slow-paced for those relaxing days when you want to take it down a few notches. Pure Bathing Culture has the uncanny ability to bring that through their music.

Hearing this single makes me anticipate the release of their debut album, Moon Tides, even more! Mark your calendars for August 20, 2013 when it drops!

DVWLX basically hands us a dirty drink, and when our eyes well up with stars, he slows it down and then hands us another.

“Not Another Love Song” has its own filthy underground tech house sound that begs for a party you can only find in the UK. Am I jealous? Just a little. I feel like the little mermaid wishing I could be “part of that world.” Legs are for dancing, let’s not kid ourselves.

This tracks comes from Manchester-based DVWLX’s debut EP which you can check out here. You really should by the way, because “Get Out” bangs and shudders with an equal lightness of being, and “Just Like That” displays admirable conviction alongside its seemingly organic rhythm.

My reticence with José González has always come from annoyance that so many people thought The Knife were covering him when they performed “Heartbeats.” Scores of impassioned conversations later — and artificially inflating the YouTube numbers of The Knife’s vids by pointing at the screen and going “See! See! I told you!” — I and others I know still haven’t convinced people it’s the other way around. Liz Lemon eyeroll of the century, people.

So, for years now, I’ve sat quiet about the tracks that make my heart gush for González, until this Dinner Date remix of my favorite track, “Crosses,” brought me out of the critics closet. House remixes of folk tracks are a bit of a craze these days, between Oliver Koletzki’s remix of HVOB’s “Always Like This“ and Richard Aarden’s take on Ben Howard’s “Bones“ dominating my soundscape lately.

Still, it takes some skill to get the recipe right. These remixes are all about filling the empty space with new life, while not detracting from the dreamy tenderness of the original. Put another way, the folk versions are like gentle caresses in a lazy, Sunday morning afterglow, and the remixes are like recharging for a second round — do it right and you can give the track a second romp around the mind; which, incidentally, is what Dinner Date does so well.

If I were to come out of retirement and don my luchador mask once again, this track would be my entrance music. “Broken Doll” is the newest single by Tesla Boy, the project hatched by Russian producer Anton Sevidov. After some switches in their line-up, Tesla Boy is following up their debut LP with the highly anticipated The Universe Made of Darkness.

The first two singles, “1991“ and “M.C.H.T.E.,” have already delivered with their full-bodied soul, and this latest release doesn’t disappoint. London’s Tyson adds some sensuality to this track with his lush vocals to perfectly complement the funky basslines and smooth synths.

This song has everything you need to keep you grooving all night long. Just one question remains…do you want to dance?

Major Lazer’s “Get Free” is probably my favorite track out of their camp. Joined by Amber Coffman of The Dirty Projectors, the song spans a variety of genres, landing somewhere between summer and reggae.

Obviously it ain’t the easiest track to remix, but tropical-wave producer Vacationer has taken a hand to the track — and the results aren’t that bad. Mind you, it’s only fitting: the words “vacationer” and “get free” go together quite well!

What's so good?

When I first heard this song yesterday, I didn’t think “woah, this is definitely SOTD material.” But after a couple listens today, I’ve come around.

Goldroom has done a marvelous remix of Owl Eyes’ “Jewels & Sapphires,” and while it’s not necessarily the catchiest song you’ll hear all day, I think the quality stands for itself.

For context, the song be released on a remix EP coming soon from Owl Eyes. Hopefully it’s not five versions of the same track…because this one will steal the cake.

Today little goes undocumented in the music realm. Songs and ideas that in decades past would at most be demos or disregarded and forgotten make their way to listeners ears as bonus cuts, mixtape material or Internet-only randoms, in part because of the reduction in labor to produce the music and in part because of the warped business model that has begotten. In private conversations, I used to speculate that to be the reason for the abundance of sub-par material today; we hear music that is part of the artists’ development process that maybe we shouldn’t. If we heard the demos or unreleased material of artists from the past, they may not appear as titanic.

Numero Group kind of blew a hole in that little theory with last year’s release of Love Apple’s self-titled shelved debut from 1978. Well, to be exact, it’s actually a rehearsal tape from 1978. The trio of Cleveland soul singers, under the auspice of Lou Ragland, cut this bare-bones tape as practice for their live shows. Life happened, things fell through, and nothing ever came of it, but now, more than 40 years later, we get to hear the tape, and goddamn is it great.

The songs sound especially somber with the sparse accompaniment; it’s just three voices, drums, piano and a guitar. I guess even yesteryear’s demos blow ours out of the water. The Numero Group sheds more light on the project:

“In the late ’70s, three do-right women from Cleveland forged a brief partnership with Ohio’s everything man, Lou Ragland. Unlike the prefabricated singing combos of the day, Lily Pearson, Annette Warren, and Avetta Henry swapped lead duties as situation demanded. When a Ragland-centric publicity stunt preempted a concert appearance, Love Apple disintegrated, abandoning this rehearsal tape at Thomas Boddie’s cherished Eastside studio. Devoid of bass, the sparse instrumentation accentuates each vocalist’s aptitude, showcasing some of Ragland’s finest songwriting in the process.”

What's so good?

The first 30 seconds of “Dustbowl” had me thinking “This is nice,” and then Ben Smolin’s voice reaches a higher pitch and becomes deeper in emotion, and I thought, “This is serious.”

Ben and Alison Smolin’s stories coalesce and echo the sentiment, ”If loneliness is truth, then why do we all search for someone to wake up with?” The song asks you to inhabit the bare bones of its body, and expose yourself without consequence. In the end, it painfully accepts the irony of love; if we could be honest it would be so much easier, but heartache is inevitable.

What's so good?

I’ve got some ear candy for you, and it’s not Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans. It’s pop ambient from Robot Science, turned out in the form of a short but sweet instrumental synth track characterized by dreamy beeps and bops.

Robot Science is Charlie Yin, aka popular producer Giraffage. I’m stoked to find this IDM/instrumental electro project of his, much different than his recent remixes we’ve been devouring. All the songs on this EP Good Luck are pretty great, albeit quite similar in nature.

This featured track, “Inhale,” is probably my favorite so far; it’s full of buzz, like a champagne cork popping out of a bottle. You’ll be addicted to the fizzy beats.

What's so good?

Jungle have absolutely no online social presence. How weird is that? I mean, perhaps that wasn’t so abnormal 10 years ago, but in this day and age?!

No matter, it’s the music that counts. And in this case, their debut single “Platoon” certainly sets the stage for some interesting music. In fact, the song is catchy enough that it’s already caught the attention of BBC Radio 1′s Zane Lowe. So, in that sense, we’re a bit late on this track.

“Platoon” is set to be released via Chess Club Records as a debut AA-side single, alongside another track called “Drops.” The London-based band aren’t exactly letting on to much else, but ultimately the grooviness of this track speaks for itself.

What's so good?

Monday marked the release of Koreless’ debut Yugen EP, released by Young Turks. As well as the previously previewed “Sun,” the EP contains four tracks, including “Last Remnants.”

According to Fact Magazine, it’s:

“…one of the most heartfelt offerings from Koreless yet, with its fusion of blissful electronics and a gamelan-inspired percussive push. It almost sounds akin to Solaris/Drive soundtrack composer Cliff Martinez’s unmistakable productions.”

Lately, I’ve been abusing the Nu Disco: Best of 2012 playlist, refusing to acknowledge the existence of other music; maybe it’s because I really want to stay in the imaginary tropical rave I’m been pretending to be in. Fortunately, this remix by Joel Hood of Tythe’s “Totem Poles” fits perfectly into my fantasy paradise.

Joel layers incandescent textures and surprise moments into his production, wavering between the sound of reality and the sound of freedom.

Latin Electronic: Mala, Alejandro Paz, Panama Cardoon + More

Growing up with immigrant parents, I was blessed to hear a variety of sounds from a young age. These foreign experiences led me to question how much of what we think we love depends on what we’re familiar with versus what we might actually love.

Today, I want to share some Latin electronic with the Shuffler community, featuring electronic cumbia and folk, Latin trap, Afro Latin jazz, tropical bass, Cuban-influenced dubstep and more. These musicians and producers share something in common despite spanning the globe from South America to Europe. While the literal message varies, the musical message comes across quite clear: we have the ability, now more than ever before, to create a sense of familiar in the unfamiliar — beautifully induced connections between cultures and generations that are a privilege to create and share.

I don’t feel that I can do this genre justice with this one playlist, considering it’s not really one genre but probably a thousand. So this isn’t as free-flowing as I’d like it to be, but hopefully some of you are introduced to new music you can appreciate.
