Chrome Sparks is easily one of my favorite artists of the year. Some musical pioneers are meant to be picked apart by buzzards for bringing a Promethean excitement to the scene until they are later understood to be geniuses (see: Fiona Apple); and some, like Chrome Sparks, are able to bring the light of their inner, musical fire in such a tangible way its like its always been apart of your listening experience. Balancing that fine line between aesthetics and art-pop, his work, which leans chillwave, always makes the future feel of the moment.
For reference, listen to “Still Sleeping“ and “Send the Pain On“ to my gist.
Chrome Sparks’ take on British Producer/DJ Gemini’s club banger is pure, unadulterated genius. Combining all the best elements of late 90s R&B with Balearic/Southeastern European influences and the godliest synthesizers I’ve heard all month, Chrome Spark’s remix takes the original track to a whole new level.
Whereas the synthesizers in the original were often suffocating (simulating the raunchy, dry humping of a disco filled with damaged kids), Chrome Spark’s version is airy and bounces on a heavenly plane even the Kama Sutra would be impressed to bring you too. Just listen to the way the track slinks and slides between the verses and you’ll understand. The synthesizers in the chorus make you want to bite your lip and mutter, “Oh yeah…..”
