What's so good?

What happens when you mix Sex In the City with once struggling writer Lena Dunham and throw in a side of Judd Apatow? You get HBO’s hit comedy-drama Girls.
Girls follows the exploits of Hannah Horvath (played by Dunham) as she navigates the world of trying to make it as a writer in New York City with her three friends (Jessa, Marnie, and Shoshana). Now I know this sounds a bit like that other show featuring four female friends that was featured on HBO, but that’s where the comparisons end. Instead of focusing on the “glamorous” side of NYC, Girls paints a much more realistic and funnier picture of being a 20something in the city.
The first season of the show finds Hannah financially cut-off from her parents as she struggles through trying to find a job and dealing with her relationships amid all of her social awkwardness. Whether it’s quitting her job for “sexual” reasons, or totally blowing interviews with inappropriate jokes, Hannah brings a new meaning to the word awkward. Thankfully she has her friends, who’ve got a plethora of their own entertaining issues.
Girls also serves as the perfect vehicle for some quality music that creates the soundtrack for the character’s lives. The show definitely takes advantage of the indie cool of New York by featuring music from LCD Soundsystem and Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah, as well as noise rockers Sleigh Bells (who happen to have formed in New York). Other artists on the Girls soundtrack also include White Sea (the solo project of M83 vocalist Morgan Kibby) and smooth neo-soul from Mayer Hawthorne. Also, what show called Girls would be complete without some music from the band Girls?
So dip into your own indie NYC dreams with this playlist featuring some of the best tracks on season 1 of Girls.
