The Girls Soundtrack:Volume 1 is certainly looking to be epic, even if it is a collection of album castoffs like fun.’s “Sight of the Sun” and this Grouplove track, “Everyone’s Gonna Get High.” Befitting Girls’ theme of cyclical self-inflicted misery and escapism, this Grouplove track was an ace addition by their musical director. Plus, as fans of Grouplove’s debut album will know well, it stays true to their maxim: Never Trust a Happy Song. What more could you ask for?
It features a drive-line beat with a country western and arena rock swagger all rolled into one, which doesn’t allow Grouplove’s vocals to wallow in misery. In a lot of these types of drug tracks, the impetus behind using is to obliterate the self, but Grouplove’s soaring vocals in the chorus matched with their Green Day-esque instrumentation instills in the listener that there just might be a whole other world to explore when skipping across the River Intoxication.
And that’s what I like most about it: its honest exploration of that moment where life is astoundingly confounding, and instead of crawling into a ball and hiding away, you just get high and see what comes out.
