While numerous shows have had their share of holiday specials, none have quite captured the holiday spirit of Chrismukkah like Fox’s The O.C. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s the only show that had an annual Chrismukkah episode.
For the four seasons that the show aired, we were privy to the annual Cohen celebration of Chrismukkah, where Seth got to combine his two favorite holidays (Christmas and Hanukkah) into one mega winter festival. Despite all of the holiday cheer, drama was always soon to follow, as it is The O.C. we’re talking about. Whether it was Seth trying to take two different girls to a holiday party or the admittance of an illegitimate child by a wealthy Southern California real estate mogul, something exciting was always happening. Not to mention one of the coolest gifts ever given on television, when Anna gave Seth a personalized comic book that she had made for him. Chrismukkah made for a great time for all involved, especially us fans.
As with any holiday special, holiday music was also incorporated. Since The O.C. was known for being cutting edge with its music, it didn’t feature the typical Christmas carol fodder. Instead the episodes were filled with tracks from the likes of The Raveonettes, Dandy Warhols, and Bright Eyes, to make the holidays with the Cohen family that much more fun. The show even managed to put out their own Holiday Mix, including some tracks that didn’t make the show, like “Just Like Christmas,” by Low and “Christmas With You Is The Best,” by The Long Winters. Regardless of your religious affiliation, any of these would be perfect for your holiday party.
So make your December just a little bit more rocking with this holiday music playlist, regardless of how you plan to celebrate your Chrismukkah.
