What's so good?
By Jess Alatorre | December 18th, 2009
With 2009 fast coming to a close, every blog everywhere is scrambling to put together their best of lists. Obviously, this indie shuffle contributor is no different. I decided to pick the top ten songs I would put on a released in 2009 soundtrack. Think of this as your every own indie pop playlist spanning the twelve months.
I tried to pick songs released at different times of the year, from back in February (here we go magic) to more recent months (Freelance Whales). Here’s my 10 best indie pop songs of 2009. We covered songs 10-6 in the last post. Now it’s time to hit songs 5-1! Use the player at the bottom of the page to listen to all the songs. Now on to the music…
–Part 2
"Phoenix - 1901"
And the ultimate spot for 2009 has to go to Phoenix. Few bands can outperform early success and Wolfgang Amadeus delivers track after track. 1901 is infectious and danceable, making it the best song of 2009.

"Freelance Whales - Starring"
Let’s be honest,
electronica? Whimsical indie pop? Rotating obscure instruments? I’m sold. Quirky, still a little rough around the edges and beautifully catchy, Freelance Whales was a big win for 2009. Starring has to be number 2.

"School of Seven Bells - Half Asleep"
This year dream pop appeared to be in abundance; None got it more spot on than School of Seven Bells. Choosing just one break out song of 2009 for school of seven bells was not easy. Ultimately, half asleep wins out. This one can loop and loop, and it never gets old.

"Land of Talk - May You Never"
Only one of two female vocal-driven songs to make it into my top 10, may you never is gritty, a little angsty, with catchy
rock hooks. This song makes me want to pick up and drive cross-country; it just does.

"Fanfarlo - The Walls are Coming Down"
Pure wonderful folk indie pop with building instrumentation, precious vocals and foot-tapping melodies all molded together in just the right arrangement. This song debuted in early 2009, but really started to make the rounds in late 2009. Perfect for a top 10 spot.
