Jessie Ware

What You Won't Do For Love

Sounds like: Toni Braxton, SBTRKT
Jessie Ware is a relatively up-and-coming artist out of the UK, already rubbing shoulders with some notable names across the pond. With one tune remixed by Disclosure and another produced by Julio Bashmore, there's not much lacking this far in her budding career. One track recently released is a cover of Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love," most likely recognized today from Tupac's jam "Do For Love." With a voice as smooth as glass, Ware throws down some serious respect to Caldwell's original version. Sampha - known for his collaboration with SBTRKT - produced the track, bringing a spacey, minimal, slow as molasses beat. It's delicate and soulful, the kind of cover our mothers wouldn't scoff at. The result is a spectacularly beautiful composition and something that the Lana Del Reys of the world could only dream of making. The threads of 90s R&B in her vocals don't hurt anything, either. So let's propose this question: where's the Tupac / Ware mashup? Kids, start your Garage Band engines.
