In 2009, Swedish pop duo jj released jj nº 2, the group’s debut full-length album and one of the most critically acclaimed, accomplished albums of the year following the release of their first single, “jj nº 1.” There’s something uniquely intimate about anything jj touches, whether it’s embodied with sublime instrumentals or fixated on Elin Kastlander’s ghostly, celestial vocals.
Alongside official releases, jj is a big fan of hip-hop covers. There’s something strange and exciting about hearing such a delicate voice cover the lyrics of an originally provocative hip-hop track, and that’s why I think I’m so fascinated with this duo.
jj recently released an A and B-side of these exciting covers, one of which I’m especially digging. “Let Them” is JJ’s delivery of T.I.’s “Let Them Talk,” to the beat of Akon’s “Right Now (Na Na Na).” ”Let Them” was released for free on independent label Sincerely Yours’ website as the first single in anticipation of their mixtape, Kills. Be sure to check out Bonus track “I’m the One / Money on My Mind” to hear a little tribute to The xx.
