A lot of you will remember Erlend Oye’s DJ Kicks. It’s an ingenious mix of classic tunes and classic Oye vocals, and it’s one of the few albums that piques my interest year after year.
Funny enough, I only ever had a hand-me-down, digital copy of the tracks, lacking titles. “01″, whatever it was, became one of my favorites, and I never bothered to investigate the origin. Back then, you see, I wasn’t a blogger, so it really didn’t matter. Recently, “01″ has returned to my playlist, so today I ventured out to find the title:
“So Weit Wie Noch Nie” (Still Far From Never) by Jurgen Paape.
Paape, though elusive, has been a massive influence on many an artist based on his productions alone. Co-owner of Kompakt (a prominent label born in 1998 according to Resident Adviser), Paape has never performed live, nor DJ’ed, nor has he ever partaken in an interview, and yet, “has left a legacy of music that is a true core of the sound which Kompakt’s foundation is built on.”
To illustrate that point, I add to the shuffle “So Weit Wie Noch Nie”.
