UK indie pop princess Ellie Goulding is building quite the cover-song repertoire. She’s lent her pipes to songs from the eclectic likes of Elton John, Alt-J, The Weeknd, Robyn, Bon Iver, Passion Pit, and then some. This time around, she gives Justin Timberlake’s latest hit the Ellie treatment on BBC1′s Live Lounge.
A sparse acoustic guitar and light piano backbone the track, crafting a far more delicate sound than the indulgent nature of the original. A trio of backup singers add soul to Goulding’s vulnerable but controlled vocal performance, and the addition of a cajón player as the song progresses sets up the beat necessary for the track’s fantastic breakdown.
It’s a feminine take on one of today’s biggest male pop stars songs, and in traditional Ellie Goulding fashion, she nails it.
