Admittedly, the female indie pop singer has been known to grate on me. So often twee, so frequently precious, I often just want them to drop the cuteness and growl into the mic, already.
But Kathryn Calder is definitively changing my mind about the badass possibilities of female-driven indie pop music. “Who Are You?,” the first single off her second solo release Bright And Vivid (out October 25), is some serious, layered, complex pop rock.
Her vocals, ethereal and lovely, are offset by rumbling hooks that might be oppressive were it not for the upbeat tempo.
