Normally a Mariah Carey remix would barely register on my musical interest meter. But tack Cyril Hahn’s name onto the package and I’m sold! Because when it comes to sculpting sultry downtempo baby-making remixes, Cyril Hahn is a musical Michaelangelo, and late 90s R&B female vocalists are his blocks of marble, apparently. Check out his remix of Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name“ for confirmation.
The ridiculousness of using Mariah Carey’s kind of hit single “Touch My Body” as the foundation for this remix is masked by Hahn’s incredibly tight production. He has the astonishing ability to infuse a track to its saturation point with sex. Hahn layers lush beats, pulsing downtempo rhythms, and just the right touch of ironic voice modulation to transform a campy R&B billboard topper into a pulsing, erection-inducing, boudoir-masterpiece.
Say what you will about “Touch My Body” (and it will probably be true). But shut yo mouth about Cyril Hahn’s remix, because it’s untouchable. Cyril Hahn is a straight up wizard when it comes to taking the embarrassing musical detritus of the past and forging it into the gold bullion of the musical present.
If Cyril Hahn remade Mariah Carey’s Glitter I would probably watch it. He’s that good.
