If there’s one thing I am always craving, it’s beats. And Future Classic solidly delivers on them.

A month ago, Australian artist Touch Sensitive dropped the track “Pizza Guy” to great fanfare. The release had come off a lot of hype after being featured (as the first track!) in a Goldroom mix and a Classixx curated selection of tracks. It is, for the record, a great song deserving of the attention. It is also somewhat of a disco club banger, if you will.

However, Lauer’s fresh take proves the track has legs, or maybe crust. Where the original “Pizza Guy”  strays into nu-disco territory,  Lauer’s rework renders it more deep house. This is especially apparent in the introduction, which switches from a Com Truise-sounding industrial synth to a more viscous house beat. Each song can stand independently of the other, so listen to both and see which you prefer!

Don’t get me started on the name, though. The genres are tagged under “Pizza Disco” and “Intergalactic Pizza”– is this going to be a thing?

As good as the original was, I always knew in the back of my head that Goldroom’s “Sweetness Alive” had great potential to be remixed by someone special. Enter Canada’s Wax Nostalgic (or David Hayes as he’s known) to get the job done. You may remember his Local Natives remix that we featured late last year, and he’s continued to impress us since.

There’s a certain amount of nostalgia associated with his remixes, and this one is no different. I didn’t think it was possible, but the wonderful vocals performed by Saint Lou Lou shine even more brightly in this stripped-down version. You can instantly tell that David was looking to enhance their vocals with his selection of atmospherics.

Certainly less dance-y, but all the more relaxing.

And anyone who can’t feel the filthy funk flowing through them on this Aeroplane remix just ain’t got no rhythm. Aeroplane takes this Justin Timberlake track and amps up the smoothness straight out of the stratosphere. It’s so hot it singes the air around your speakers.

I wasn’t excited at all for that weak lyric tenor Justin Timberlake to reemerge into the scene, but if it inspires a few more remixes like this one, I might just be yelling “Hail, the return of JT” at the club this summer.

British producer Alex Metric is gearing up to release an album on label OWSLA next month, but apparently Aeroplane couldn’t wait to get his remixing hands on single “Rave Weapon.” Metric is living in many lands right now, producing his own music along with the lines of the talented and blossoming Charli XCX.

Now to the music. For those of you who are familiar with the upbeat, nu disco/house original tracks and remixes that Aeroplane has been drawn to for the past while, you’ll have to look elsewhere for that spectrum of sound today. His remix of “Rave Weapon” takes a page from the harder side of electronic music, leaving his glitzy beats in the dust.

“Rave Weapon” is due out on his Ammunition Pt 2 EP, so keep your eyes out for that in the coming month.

I recently covered Mock and Toof’s “Sleeper” from their forthcoming album. Today I bring you “My Head,” an older track featured on Aeroplane’s “Not-So-Monthly October 2012 Mix” (listen to the full mix here).

Sounding like Matthew Dear’s second cousin, “My Head” is a very aptly titled. Ever since I heard the single, it’s absolutely been lurking in my head. The vibe to this song is so chill and apathetically cool it sounds like something Samuel L. Jackson might strut down the street to. There’s no rushing Sirs Mock and Toof, nor the brilliantly dropped staccato notes and vocal bits.

Tuesdays are pretty much the best day ever for new music, and I think this remix by Aeroplane just took the cake.

Slated to be released as part of an upcoming album of Kimbra remixes, this rendition of “Two Way Street” actually retains some of the elements that made Aeroplane’s “I Crave Paris (Ft. Friendly Fires & Flight Facilities)” so damned amazing. Clearly that’s a good thing, as Kimbra Lee Johnson’s vocals intertwine incredibly well with the harmony and rhythm.

Fingers crossed that with the album Vows now more than a year old, each remix artist featured new release will have had enough to time to perfect their version the same way Aeroplane has.

Russ Chimes, why oh why are you so amazing? Everything this Londonite touches is pheeeeeeenomenal, and his newest download does not disappoint, so get ready for another solid gold remix from the English electro genius.

Taking Norwegian Per Byhring’s folktronica track “Ettertid,”(original here) Russ Chimes added some big sound for his remix.Channeling influences from all over the electro-dance board, this remix is humongous.

The original is a glitchy, electronic track akin to an early Four Tet track. Chimes, with extraordinary vision, took this sinister, dark electronic beauty and layered vocals, synths, and some fat bass creating a track for any and every dance floor on the planet. From the first beat, it’s apparent that Chimes’ remix is more then noteworthy. This is the kind of remix that makes you dance even when you don’t want to.

For more Russ Chimes, I recommend this awesome mix from last year. Or, to be honest, just anything with his name attached to it.

Nu disco, you never cease to get my dance moves flowing. I just caught this track by Only Children earlier this week, embedded in a seriously awesome March mix from Aeroplane (link here). Only Children is a Chitown native DJ/producer with a fantastic knack for disco-house flavor.

At 112 BPM, “Down Fever” is a slow-buliding seven minutes of funky, jazzy guitar and Whitney-esque looped vocals. The carefully placed, repetitive samples bring the single up 3000 notches. With songs like these, it’s the subtleties that make them epic, tactful and charismatic beat changes and buildups suavely moving in and out.

Also exciting is that the track is available for free – yes FREE – download. Take a page from the Aeroplane magazine and add this track to your rotation. You won’t regret it.

Teaming up with Modular/DFA records, The Rapture’s 2011 album In The Grace Of Your Love hit a serious home run. At the time, it seemed just about everyone was basking in the energetic, passionate vocal rays belting from the depths of frontman Luke Jenner. Upon hearing the full album, my initial excitement (after I got over the ecstasy of the album itself) was all the amazing remixes to come.

Clearly, I am no psychic because there were only a handful of remixes of album single “How Deep Is Your Love,” most missing the epic remix bar in my opinion. I had all but given up on this front, until DFA slapped some stellar remixes on their Soundcloud page about two weeks ago.

Drawing from some of electronic music’s star talent, Cut Copy, Aeroplane, and Cosmic Kids took the single and each offered their interpretations of In The Grace Of Your Love‘s opening track, “Sail Away.” Electronic track masters Cut Copy’s remix is my favorite, a blazing synth-pop progression of euphoric vocal loops speckled with keyboards, sparkly synths, and palpable dance magic.

Hopefully this is an indicator that DFA will be releasing other remixes as the year progresses. To listen to Aeroplane and Cosmic Kids’ remixes as well, check out DFA’s Soundcloud page here.

Ahhhh, the remix category. Generally, people are polarized by this genre of music, loving or hating remixes with a furious passion. When pondering the more philosophical side of this category, a parallel (strange, and possibly dorky) thought continually crept into the forefront of my mind: the fluffernutter sandwich. A twist on the original peanut butter and jelly classic, the fluffernutter is peanut butter and marshmallow fluff – unexpected yet slightly familiar, delicious to fans and potentially unappealing to zealots of tradition.

Whatever your preference — fluffernutter or not — our top ten remixes of 2011 is an amazing list, if we do say so ourselves.

Florence is another one of those musicians that other artists compulsively remix. I quite remember the day this remix came out, as I compulsively listened to it over and over. The Weeknd released a number of mixtapes this year, burning with emotion and passion — a style that this remix follows. A decimating beat ebbs back and forth ominously while The Weeknd spirals Florence’s vocals in a torrential manner that even Poseidon would envy.

Jamie xx pretty much owned a significant chunk of 2011. Reworking Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” into an absolute overnight hit, coming out with some stellar original tracks, collaborating with Gil Scott Heron, and throwing down an AMAZING Essential Mix, no can argue with this The xx alumni.

The England native’s remix of Radiohead’s “Bloom” is hands down in the top ten, synths looping softly around Thom Yorke’s languished cries. The shorter version is included here, so check out Jamie xx’s “Bloom Pt. 3″ if you are in need of six more minutes of amazingness.

Gold Panda emerged in 2009 and has been killing it ever since. His remix of Lykke Li’s “Sadness Is A Blessing” is no different. The beat is unmistakably Gold Panda, and mixed with the dulcet, velvety vocals Lykke Li is so famous for, this remix is a home run. Yet again, you have a remix airing on the downtempo side of things versus taking the well-traveled hyphy road. A golden remix, if you’ll excuse the pun.

A lot of Ellie Goulding remixes throw in sycophantic, overly-energized beats just begging to get some play on a Friday night. Shook’s remix, however, is a delightfully casual, tepid remix. It perfectly highlights the beauty of Ellie’s vocals while spinning the beat at a slower pace, making this playable everyday of the week.

Remember when I said RAC is known for their stellar remix powers? They are so amazing we are featuring two of their edits in our top ten remixes. Astonishing, yet true. Youth, infinity, exhilaration – all words that come to mind at the first nanosecond of this song. The duo has without question manhandled Foster The People with their masterful interpretation of the indie band’s “Houdini.” It’s absolutely impossible to listen to this remix without tapping your toe at least once. Try it and you will fail, guaranteed.

In entered Florence, followed by a rapper named Cudi. They tarried and intermingled above some expert beat manipulation and this R3K remix made history… for 2011, at least! The two artists, although not necessarily a predictable combination, have palpable chemistry. Even if this technically might be more of a mashup than a traditional remix, it’s a favorite at Indie Shuffle, so it has definitely made our top ten. We, too, live for symphonies, just of the R3K remix variety.

Yelle is one of those artists whose voice is just begging to be remixed, so it’s no surprise that a remix of her “Que Veux Tu” ended up here. No matter we have no idea what she is saying, Madeon adds an uplifting and sunny disposition to “Que Veux Tu,” making an already great song even better.

Primarily known for the success of jacked-up, high-energy remixes, RAC did the entire world a solid here. TDCC’s “Something Good Can Work” has been reworked so many times that the remixes are probably remixed at this point. The original came out in 2010, but this revitalizing and fresh point of view RAC produced earlier this year brought back all of our TDCC love yet again.

Flight Facilities may be a familiar band to you through their single “Crave You.” You can find the original here, or a variant featuring Friendly Fires here. It’s an awesome single that brought the band considerable attention.

On the flip side, that was about all they were known for. There wasn’t much more to their name, and so listeners were left guessing whether they could follow the track up with anything nearly as good.

Now that we can listen to their new single featuring Jess Higgs, it’s encouraging to know that they’re capable of consistency. Nu-disco, anyone?

The first full-length from Belgian-Italian act Aeroplane is a genre-bending journey of groovy cosmic disco rock. The album, produced and written by Vito Deluca, is one-half of the duo known for their party-starting DJ sets and stellar remixes of artists like Friendly Fires, Sebastien Tellier, and Grace Jones.

Influenced by the recently revived nu-disco and Balearica scenes, there’s no restraint of exploration to be found on We Can’t Fly. The overall vibe of the record is varied and not at all limited to the dance music space. The MySpace page for Aeroplane page cites Giorgio Moroder, Abba, and Pink Floyd as inspirations, and while influences from across the musical spectrum are normally a good thing, this time around the journey becomes difficult to follow. The songs go from atmospheric rock (like on the opening track “Mountains of Moscow”), to hints of disco (“We Can’t Fly), to electro (“Superstar”), rendering the album somewhat identity-less.

The guest vocalists reflect the same sentiment, going from grandiose diva on one track to a quiet whisper on the next. While mixing it up is usually a good thing, a steady underpinning of context is always good to anchor the record – and it’s somewhat difficult to find one here.

Overall, the album is a venture into the electro galaxy with no clear destination. It begins to pick up towards the end of the LP with the song “Fish in the Sky,” but still sounds like a first trip into space.

Off of the Italian’s recently released We Can’t Fly, “Without Lies” features the sultry vocals of Sky Ferriera. Interwoven with a simplistic and 80s-esque backing, Sky is able to instantly grab the attention of the listener, transporting them down a river of audio porn. It’s short, sweet and tells no lies. Much like the cherry on top.

Part of their anonymity lies in the fact that to date, Flight Facilities has only released one original song: “Crave You” featuring Giselle Rosselli. Beyond that, the best we’ve got are a couple mix-tapes and some remixes of Bag Raiders, Toecutter, Sneaky Soundsystem and The Lowbrows, which you can check out below. Worth the mystery? We think so…
