What's so good?

DVWLX basically hands us a dirty drink, and when our eyes well up with stars, he slows it down and then hands us another.

“Not Another Love Song” has its own filthy underground tech house sound that begs for a party you can only find in the UK. Am I jealous? Just a little. I feel like the little mermaid wishing I could be “part of that world.” Legs are for dancing, let’s not kid ourselves.

This tracks comes from Manchester-based DVWLX’s debut EP which you can check out here. You really should by the way, because “Get Out” bangs and shudders with an equal lightness of being, and “Just Like That” displays admirable conviction alongside its seemingly organic rhythm.

Holy guacamole, Batman! Santa Cruz-based Mist Glider is not messing around with these remixes. When he approached me at the end of March to premiere his take on XXYYXX’s “About You,” I was blown away with what he and fellow Bay Area producer Aeropsia had crafted together. I love that track, and so now I just feel spoiled to premiere Mist Glider’s newest remix.

He’s teamed up with San Francisco producer Tree to deliver an ambitious rework of James Blake’s “Retrograde.” I can’t say that I’m the biggest fan of the original track, which received considerable attention from the blogosphere when it first debuted. Maybe I just haven’t given James Blake and his new album enough of a chance. Mist Glider and Tree do a wonderful job retaining the emotion of the original, while adding even more of a hip-hop edge to the production.

Can’t say I was super familiar with Shelf Nunny when the Santa Cruz-based producer first reached out to me a few days ago. Turns out that he rolls with Sleepy Beach, which means that we went from strangers to good friends in about two seconds flat. If you visit Indie Shuffle often, then you have probably enjoyed the experimental stylings of other Sleepy Beachers, including Mist Glider and Aeropsia.

“I Feel So Good About Myself” is glitchy, ambient, and all sorts of chilled out. Props to Shelf Nunny for delivering an instrumental that incorporates so many sounds, but still manages to stay light on its feet. This track has got me feeling so good about myself that I might just float away listening to it.

“I Feel So Good About Myself” is the lead single off of Shelf Nunny’s upcoming debut EP. Dream Album will be out on June 15th via Sleepy Beach, and will be well worth a listen if you’re a fan of what you’re hearing today.

Chicago-based DJ BeazyTymes has beefed up The xx’s “Unfold” with a new take on trap that involves minimal productions and an emphasis on heavy bass. Because this guy isn’t new to the game of remixing songs by The xx, it comes as no surprise that he gives his audience something worth getting excited over.

Drawing in a more spacial composition with heavy bass beats, this minimal electronica remix focuses your hearing on not only the haunting beats, but the mesmerizing vocals. While there are numerous The xx remixes out there, I have to say this is probably one of the better ones that I’ve come across. Taking a song of this caliber and building it up without interrupting its structure sounds like it would be a difficult task, but this mixologist manages to keep it all intact and treats our ears to something quite stunning.

Texan Andrew “There Will Be Booty” Hoke, aka Bird Peterson, is part of the Mad Decent/ Teenage Riot fam who has been mastering the art of bass, before Ace of Bass, and advocating the youthful nation to bounce for years now. I was first introduced to him through his trunk popping alias, Drankenstein, back in March via his SXSW mix – you should check it out.

Finally, after months of heckling, Bird Peterson came through with the freshest remix of Lil Troy’s “Wanna Be A Baller.” This track will take you way back to when you were sittin’ fat down south in 99′ sippin on capri suns after school — at least, it did for me. While keeping the OG’ness of the song in tack and in true Bird Peterson/Drankenstein form, he adds the low-end, booty shakin’ bass and rhythm that will get the twenty inch blades on thee impala spinning, and might even get you laid tonight.

So I’m gonna hit the highway and make money the fly way, but if you like what you’re hearing, booty shake on over to his SoundCloud page to cop more Drankenstein juice.

Recently there has been a spate of remixes to The Other Tribes’ “We Should be Dancing“ circulating their way through my SoundCloud feed, with nearly all of them exploring the smooth, albeit safe, parameters of the original. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the original, but I felt like it was a single that fought against itself. It wanted to send to your ears the clean melodies of Cut Copy, but at its heart was a filthy little dance track that get its power from its rough edges.

There’s a point in the chorus where the singer’s voice breaks, shattering the façade of perfection that drives the production. But beneath that sheen of false imperfection is where the heart of the track lies. Ryan Riot gets that on his remix and doubles down on it to awesome effect. Amplifying the bassline to give the track some Peter & The Magician vibe, Ryan Riot turns the song into a smorgasbord of sexuality sure to feed the appetites of many a hungry heart on the dance floor.

If you don’t know Ryan Riot, I suggest following his SoundCloud. He’s a producer on the rise, recently remixing and opening for Bastille and has an amazing monthly Indie Dance Report.

Applebottom’s remix of “When You Say” is epically clubby in a late 90s sort of way, and vaguely reminds me of Orgy’s 1995 version of “Blue Monday,” but all this is making me love it.

Forthcoming on Madhouse Records (the big brother of sorts to MadTech), “When You Say” is the original creation of Jay Ennes and Troy Denari. Their original version, a classic house stomper, is just as pleasantly 90s. Applebottom has thus created a perfect balance between the two; neoclassic sentiment retained, his version is the night to Ennes and Denari’s day.

Also well worth a listen is the dark disco remix from Steve Mill & Elias Tzikas. Never short of quality, “When You Say” is everything we would expect from the tastemaker label. Follow Madhouses’s SoundCloud to keep up-to-date on the release.

I’m a big nerd when it comes to this music blogging stuff. I love seeing a talented musician get his or her sound out there to as many people as possible. Occasionally, I like to do my part to help spread the good vibes. That was the case back in early March when I hyped an electronic track titled “Dreams” by English producer Nuages.

Up to that point, Nuages’ music had only been heard by a few thousand people. “Dreams” took off once the Indie Shuffle post made its way to Hype Machine, helping it rack up nearly sixty thousand listens as of last night. That’s when I like to remember that Nuages has a day job in engineering.

“Shadows” is just the kind of music I need after listening to “Get Lucky” non-stop for the past, oh I don’t know, six months it seems. It’s dark, emotional, and holds my attention amazingly well for a six minute instrumental. I’m just going to end this post arbitrarily at this point because I could go on singing Nuages praises for, well, a while. Support him!

Dirtybird resident Eats Everything must have just updated his remix set, because it showed up top on my SoundCloud feed today. This gave me a chance to backtrack into some of his previous remixes I had forgotten about, namely this one from the White Stripes.

What I love most about “Hello Operator” is that it’s the best example I’ve heard, thus far, that bridges two of my favorite musical styles — garage country blues rock and jackin’ booty house. The energy of these two styles comes from very much the same place: libido charged music, sex appeal woven into every measure. Maybe that’s why Eats Everything’s edit works so well.

“Hello Operator” is also a good reminder of the dude that everyone loves to hate — Jack White. Sure, he might have always been too big for his britches and a little too agro for a great portion of the musical community, but his music is phenomenal, so you know, he’s allowed to be a bit much. Don’t you think?

Scope out more of what Eats Everything has to offer in his remix set. The selection will surely help expand your musical mind and make your day a lot more eclectic.

Man, oh, man. Make sure you have the bass up for this particularly infectious remix of The xx.

Jamie Jones, founder the UK label Hot Creations, offers a deep take on “Sunset,” a phenom track from the UK-bred wunderkin trio that everyone idolizes. Starting with a sticky, pronounced bass line, Jamie Jones builds the perfect foundation for a deep house remix. Romy’s vocals caress the synths and snares, with a topline sound that even Jamie xx would conceivable bump during one of his sets.

XLR8R recently gave away this free download from London-based producer Fybe:one, who as well as being a talented producer is also a talented graphic designer, doing the cover for this one himself.

“Irenidae” is a track that reminds of Shlohmo or Lapalux — probably more the latter if we’re honest, combining the glitchy energy of Shlohmo with some UK Garage references that recall Lapalux. Oh, and there’s a harp in there as well!

It all comes together very nicely. We’d firmly recommend heading over to XLR8R for the free download.

Back in March, I hyped a Ciara rework by Rhode Island producer The Range in anticipation of his forthcoming Seneca EP. Well, Seneca is officially up for sale and stream on Bandcamp, which means it’s time to dive into the release and share one of my favorite tracks at the moment.

“Greg Maddux Change Up” has this incredible vibe — not too far off from what producers like Keyboard Kid are creating on the other side of the country. Large up to The Range for making such great use of vocal samples. They dominate the track without taking away from the beat. “Greg Maddux Change Up” goes big on the bass and percussion, and that is something we could all use more of these days.

The Range is working towards his full length album, which is expected to arrive later this year. Enjoy Seneca, and prepare yourselves for the range of sounds still to come (couldn’t help myself).

Earlier this month, we premiered a remix of Orlando producer XXYYXX’s “About You” by Mist Glider and Aeropsia, two artists making noise out of Santa Cruz, Calif. Anyone who frequents these parts should recognize the name Mist Glider. He’s a cool guy who steps way outside the designated zone of comfort to create some awesome music.

Mist Glider has also proven himself quite a team player, as you can hear for yourself on “Love Magic.” It’s the second collaboration I’ve featured from Mist Glider and Heart Tricks, and probably won’t be the last. It’s my humble opinion that these two work really well together, bringing out playful, experimental sounds with such emotion and skill that getting lost in “Love Magic” is as simple as pressing play.

Sure to get your blood pumping in all the proper areas, Dirtybird’s latest contribution to the world of dirty dripping, booty bopping bass comes from UK producer Breach.

Shortly after WMC, my Facebook feed was all a-buzz with DJs melting over a track called “Jack” — apparently the Miami creme de la creme; the choice du jour of the festival.

Good thing partying hardy isn’t confined to the pool, hard bodies and hair gel. “Jack” is available via beatport, thus, a perfectly packaged portable party for wherever you see fit — just please don’t taint the fun and repeat the youtube “Harlem Shake” fiasco. Indie Shuffle begs you.

This afternoon, I was debating with a friend of mine over genres, specifically “future garage.” His argument was that bloggers are so over-saturated with music that they’ve been referring to anything vague and electronic as future garage. Sort of like the lazy man’s approach to genre selection. This may be true, but I’m not one of those bloggers. I’d sooner create a new genre to describe a song, rather than tag a pre-existing one to an unsuitable track. That’s just confusing and lame, so to those of you that do it — bad bloggers! Bad! Educate yourselves.

Now I’m not the defining voice, but dammit I try to be. So let’s get it straight readers, listeners and bloggers: this new track from Real = “future garage,” and it’s a damn good representation and a damn good track. Note the synth sounds, the way the vocals are chopped/pitched, the bounce of the beat, and the general flow.

If you get lost along the way, use Disclosure for reference. They basically created the genre, and I say “created” like Detroit created techno. Really, future garage has been around for a New York minute. As the name implies, future garage is an amalgamation of all sounds and styles found in the metaphorical “garage,” paired with a forward thinking outlook of all things futuristic and glorious.

Sound familiar? Yeah, it’s basically the ideology behind techno. But as my friend also pointed out, “I mean really, everything is techno” and this is true, because techno started as more of a mindset — a way to be — than a sound. But now I’m starting to confuse myself, so let’s just leave it at that for now and enjoy “You + Me.” It’s as slippery and cool as a slip and slide.

I appreciate when a track doesn’t waste a moment seizing your attention; there’s something sexy about that instant attraction happening through the simplest of means.

The intro of Deetron’s remix of “Reverse Skydiving” teases with a sinister melodic loop and sizzling percussion. It makes you feel dangerous in the most sophisticated way. Forget the irony that saying something makes you feel dangerous isn’t sophisticated at all.

Anabel Englund’s voice enters the mix like red lipstick — it’s striking and classically attractive. I won’t tell you too much more, but stick around until the end for some deep house bass, salvation and a scenic route.

The Hud Mo / Lunice twosome that is TNGHT is back with another trap single in prep for the massive Coachella invasion starting this weekend.

As a whole, single “Acrylics” is a little sporadic, but still offers some strong individual snippets within the four plus minutes. High-ramped synths and snares start out the trap tune alongside a sort of creepy childlike conglomeration of bells. “Acrylics” bangs hard and strong throughout, bringing about a ridic drop after another creepy little bridge about halfway through.

You best believe all the Coachella babies will have this on blast over the next two weekends. #runthetrap

What's so good?

Dallas-based Neo-Safari first appeared on Indie Shuffle just about a year ago with his bubbly tune “Coastal Cruise.” It was my first taste of the Texas producer’s home brew of future bass and glitch pop. Thankfully, it wasn’t my last.

Neo-Safari just released his new Neo-Noir EP, a notably dark turn from the innocent synths that made up his first two projects. Dan Rogers, the talented man behind the moniker, acknowledges his musical past with cuts like “Dystopian Cruise.” The track, like most of Neo-Noir, rides a chill wave of glitch into a heart of darkness not yet resigned to the joys of love.

Featured track “The Departed” also happens to be the EP’s opening track. With a warped sample telling us “the heartache lives on,” it won’t take long to catch on to Neo-Noir‘s brooding — albeit sexy — ways.

What's so good?

Checking out this song was a no-brainer for me, as I am already a huge fan of Banks. Now I’m becoming familiar with Djemba Djemba, who has recently just flipped Banks’ smooth and sexy song “Fall Over” into a club banger. Djemba Djemba is no stranger to the lime light recently, releasing tracks via Diplo’s Mad Decent record label as well as sharing the stage with artist such as Diplo, Bauuer, Rusko, and Major Lazer — he’s a DJ/producer force to be reckoned with, for sure.

The remix of “Fall Over” begins like a typical Banks track — soft, smooth and sultry. But then Djemba Djemba’s true colors come out around the one minute mark, progressing the track into banger-mode. While there is very little kept from the original version, Djemba Djemba keeps my ears guessing by constantly switching up the beat, tempo, and melody from smooth to ganster in true trapster form.

Djemba Djemba’s remix is currently available for free download over on his SoundCloud page. And if you’re diggin’ the jam, I recommend checking out his remix of Fiona Apple’s “Every Single Night” as well.

What's so good?

You’ve probably heard of Justin Timberlake. He performed on Jimmy Fallon for like a year straight in order to promote his polarizing new album, The 20/20 Experience. I gave it a listen back when iTunes was streaming it for free, and came away feeling like the album really should have been called The Timbaland Experience.

Whatever you think of Justin Timberlake is irrelevant as soon as you hit play on this heavy remix of “Tunnel Vision” by Jonny Cage. The TNGHT vibes are undeniable, and are welcomed. Also a big fan of the hip-hop flavors that Floss Angeles-based Jonny Cage brings out of the original track.

Enjoy the free download, and keep your ears out for more Jonny Cage soon. In the meantime, I’m hopeful that all you digital diggers out there stay on your grizzle and help hype this wonky remix.

Love & Future Bass II: Kastle, Full Crate & FS Green, Citizen, Kidnap Kid + More

It seems like a satisfying amount of Shufflers appreciated the first Love & Future Bass playlist. I didn’t think I’d be working on a sequel until I realized my digital post-it was quickly filling up with associated tracks to write about, all from the last month.

I’m influenced and stirred by this movement in electronic music. I wouldn’t say it’s recent, but it’s gathering momentum — and for sufficient reason. In this particular set, there’s a lounge-sexy, yet basement-friendly sophistication in full effect; you don’t have to look any further than Full Crate & FS Green’s remix of MNEK’s cover of Disclosure’s single “White Noise” to see what I mean. (If that many heavy-hitters in one sentence doesn’t get you excited, then I don’t what else to tell you!)

I take care to make sure any track in a playlist is compelling enough to appreciate on its own though, so hopefully you’ll enjoy dancing through this encore presentation.

What's so good?

When Santa Cruz producer Mist Glider approached me about premiering his latest remix — a collaboration with fellow Sleepy Beach producer Aeropsia — I knew as soon as I saw the letters XXYYXX that I was on board.

XXYYXX has blown up in the last year or so, thanks largely in part to the success of singles like “About You.” He’s doing interviews with Nardwuar, and playing guest sets with the WEDIDIT team at SXSW. The list goes on and on. It’s been awesome to see XXYYXX get the love he deserves for his music.
