Fresh off his amazing track on Daft Punk’s new album, Chilly Gonzales teams up with Stars as part of a collaborative effort spearheaded by their label, Arts & Crafts.

The song is one of seven included on a release titled Arts & Crafts: X. Other artists involved in the effort include Broken Social Scene, Ra Ra Riot, Jason Collett, Amy Milan and so many more (in fact, yesterday we posted the song between Still Life Still & Zulu Winter).

It’s a pretty nice listen, and all you have to do is head over to Soundcloud if you want more.

What's so good?

Are you as excited as I am for Pure Bathing Culture’s newest single, “Pendulum?” If you’re not yet, then I think you’ll understand why I am after reading this.

This track is gorgeously glimmering, with the perfect balance of synths, drum machines, acoustic guitar, a lovely bass line and lusciously ethereal vocals. This is the type of song you turn on when you’re looking to tune in and tune out. There’s an undeniably breezy and light quality to the character of this song — it’s slightly slow-paced for those relaxing days when you want to take it down a few notches. Pure Bathing Culture has the uncanny ability to bring that through their music.

Hearing this single makes me anticipate the release of their debut album, Moon Tides, even more! Mark your calendars for August 20, 2013 when it drops!

Indie Shuffle’s own Christiana Bartolini comes to us with another gem from her self-described “woozy dream pop” group, Cherokee Red. The five-piece, Wilkes Barre, Pa.-based band cites Mazzy Star, Beach House, and even Fleetwood Mac as influences, and “Mythomania” emulates the former’s hazy comfort.

On this track from the band’s latest self-titled album, Bartolini’s whimsical vocals float over light percussion and a lethargic guitar as she opens the song by singing, “Came and gone but the days were so long/ Only somber songs from the lonesome ride home.” It’s at this minute-mark that she’s declared this, too — a melancholic song for such a drive.

As the song matures, the pace quickens, and Bartolini’s delicate voice soars — but don’t be fooled. “Now I don’t wish for anything again,” she sings, followed by the repeated question: “When will we learn?”

Roll down the windows, hit the road on a warm spring evening and prepare for life contemplation with this musing track.

What's so good?

For a second — just a split second — I thought Mr. Little Jeans had decided to cover TLC’s “Waterfalls.” And you can’t blame me: those lyrics sound might familiar! Turns out it’s actually a Paul McCartney original, also titled “Waterfalls.”

Which leaves me of two minds: 1) excitement about an unexpected new release from Mr. Little Jeans, and 2) slight disappointment that it isn’t a TLC cover. Sure McCartney is great and all, but I’m not personally familiar with his original :(

“Waterfalls” is the fourth song (and third original) we’ve heard from Mr. Little Jeans, clearly hinting at an upcoming album in the near future. While this one’s an enjoyable track, I’m hoping that the others pick up the pace a bit. Any more of this and I’ll probably lull myself to sleep.

My homegirl Isa initially put me onto Empress Of through her radio show, The Parked Car. In between Ciara tunes and hyphy jams (she’s in the Bay Area), my last visit to the show yielded this pleasant gem. Electronic but not quite uptempo, yet not a slow jam by any means, “Tristeza” is cerebral and spacey, and Lorely Rodriguez (Empress Of’s alter ego) keeps things wistful with her smoky voice.

A quick search on this site shows me Christina and Anibal are already up on the Empress train, and I guess I’m riding in the caboose. Well, no one has singled out this track yet, which hits a soft spot for me because it’s in Spanish.

If you’re still sleeping on Empress Of, head on over to her website, which honestly is part of what won me over. A complete Craigslist mimic may be trendy/hipster or what have you, but it is also completely hilarious, and in this case, very well done.

Once a year, we get to hear from Mr. Little Jeans. Back in 2011 it was her awesome cover of Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs,” and then in 2012 came her first original single, “Runaway.”

Flash forward to 2013, and Hilly Dilly managed to get his hands on a beautiful new single called “Oh Sailor.” Featuring the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Youth Chorale (who you might recognize from Ryan Gosling’s Dead Mans Bones), the song is a great taste of what’s to come on her upcoming album, produced by Tim Anderson.

Keep your ears perked — not only are we expecting a remix of this song by Strange Talk, but rumor has it Mr. Little Jeans has a cover of Paul McCartney’s “Waterfalls” lined up.

Here’s a new single from the band Poliça! It features Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) on vocals.

Poliça’s most recent album was a pretty big hit — I really warmed up to the production of it after a while. They use quite a bit of auto-tune, but on this new track it seems like they haven’t laid it on as thick. Poliça’s stripped-down percussion and minimal instruments really carve a spot out in today’s musical landscape. They don’t sound like anyone else; they just sound like themselves.

I’m interested in hearing more from them in the upcoming months… possibly new album this year? We’ll see.

I’d like to introduce all you Shufflers to one of my new favorite bands. Brooklyn’s own Belle Mare is a talented boy/girl group that oozes potential and infectiousness.

Their debut EP, The Boat Of The Fragile Mind, is a cathartic and soothing journey into a dream world of many wonders. Sometimes melancholy, sometimes intricate delicateness — this album is solid through and through. Belle Mare takes the simplicity of just a few instruments and effects and calls it their own, producing glistening and gorgeously constructed dream pop that has the ability to awaken your mind and soul. Vocalist Amelia Bushell’s softly hypnotizing voice has a beckoning quality to it as she glides through each song with wistful ease.

Luckily for you, Belle Mare’s EP has just been released. Now you have no excuse to not hear it! I see big things happening for them; with a sound so intriguing and the skill to have such a strong presence within their music, they truly hold a ton of merit in this modern music world.

You’ll have to forgive me, but I feel like a kid in a playground with this track! Broken Social Scene was one of my all-time favorite bands circa high school, and to this day I still enjoy their catalog.

So, hearing “Deathrock” out of the blue was a treat — especially awesome because it hasn’t really let me down.

Late last year, we brought you “Halogen Moon,” a gorgeous single from Melbourne’s Wintercoats (James Wallce). Off his upcoming EP Heartfelt (out on April 17) we’ve just been treated to a second slice of perfection from this truly brilliant artist.

Just released, the EP’s second single is “Everyone Seems to Be in on Something.” Wallace’s main strengths are his haunting vocals and the use of his trusty violin, and these are both on display on this track. The one-man music box plays all the instruments (including a glockenspiel on this song) just to make us feel even more inadequate.

Having supported a multitude of stars recently (including Beach House, Sarah Blasko and How to Dress Well), people are starting to really pay attention to this young man’s brilliance. Roll on April 17.

“People never smile to say goodbye. Leaving means there’s nothing left to try.” I never caught that quote the first few times I tried listening to HAERTS. It seems I got caught up in the sweeping pop/rock nature of the song, and erroneously viewed “Wings“ as just another breakup song in the oeuvre of modern love songs. But that lyrical couplet hints at brilliance.

Wildcat! Wildcat! seem to agree; in their remix they chop, splice and loop those lyrics until they take on twelve different meanings to Sunday, revealing the multifaceted nature of forlorn love. Set to their chillstep-esque production, you can almost feel those grim moments at the end of a relationship where all that comes out of your mouth is tiny gasps of air as you decide to just let it go.

And then you look at your partner, and smile in a way to signify that he or she will never look at you the same. I think that’s the most heartbreaking moment of any breakup, and Wildcat! Wildcat! really drive that feeling home.

It’s late on a Tuesday, and I should be sleeping. But here I am, drawn to the keyboard yet again to share a brilliant track from a UK group simply called Wall.

“Left To Wonder” is an exquisitely crafted melodic caress, just the kind of musical embrace one needs after a long day. Seemingly purged of all of the fast-paced activities we have in this day and age, the electronic shoegaze tune is hypnotically placid with its delicate lyrics and smooth composition.

Being as England is the birthplace of the shoegaze movement, it’s only fitting that artists there are producing some high-quality examples of what shoegaze has become, including the band Tape Runs Out.

Hailing from Cambridge, Tape Runs out consists of four friends doing their best to continue on the tradition of British shoegaze. Their first EP, Covered In Tape, is a tribute to the analog days of the cassette tape and all its lo-fi goodness.

The first single off the EP, “Friends,” starts off with a reverbed out guitar riff mixed with a Cure-influenced bass line, setting the tone for this trip to a simpler time of mix tapes and acid wash jeans. Everything in the track carefully washes together, creating a dreamy soundscape that really puts the dream in dream pop.

Air Review – Young

What's so good?

I can’t say that this was the most difficult band name to research, but Air Review certainly had me scouring through a plethora of airline reviews. But no matter how hard it is to search for a band, the music will always conquer all — that is what I have always believed.

“Young” is taken from the Dallas quintet’s second album Low Wishes, which followed up their debut self-titled record from 2009. I’ll be honest and say that many of the songs on the album take on a very similar style, but the adventure within each song is very unique. “Young” has you immediately hooked on the whistling melody, transporting you to a place of tranquility — a place I like to think is very much like the cover art for the album.

Here’s hoping 2013 is a breakthrough year for these guys.

With a sound that rolls as gently as the hills that surround the Appalachian Valley they hail from, Cherokee Red instantly lulls you into a blissfully peaceful state of deprived consciousness.

The band is based in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and founded by Indie Shuffle’s own Christiana Bartolini, along with pianist/guitarist Charles Davis, Andrew Sgarlat, who splits duties on drums and guitar, Dirk Dekker on bass guitar and Brittany Thomas on guitar and vocals.

From the onset, ”Vaya Con Dios” is an irresistibly infectious track you will now be humming for the rest of the day.

This one’s pretty straightforward: if you like Beach House, you’re going to like DC-based GEMS. Unfortunately, I’m not entirely sure what their deal is.

To date, four songs have been uploaded to Soundcloud. But, there’s no talk of an EP or album. So, perhaps “Pegasus” exists as a standalone?

Dream pop songstress Psychic Twin is gearing up to release a 7″ on Polyvinyl Records by the title Strangers. From what I can tell it’s Erin Fein’s first release with the record label?

As a little background, Erin began writing songs under the moniker Psychic Twin a little over two years ago. Joined by Brett Sanderson, the duo craft synth-heavy, dreamy songs that find their sound aligned with the likes of Twin Sister and maybe even a bit of Beach House.

The 7″ will be available early March, but can be pre-ordered today via Polyvinyl’s website.

Now this is the type of song that I’m all about when I’m organizing and cleaning and just getting shit done. Colossal Mantis‘ “Phases” is a fresh synth pop jam that deserves a listen.

This single may sound simple at first, but if you take the time to pick it apart, there’s a calculated construction that makes this mathematical track sound robotically pure. The many layers of synth coincide with each other and disguise themselves as one, when really, there are many effects happening here. The beat has a late 80s/early 90s feel and the bass encompasses a slightly gritty industrial sound.

“Phases” is a multifaceted, chilled-out atmospheric dream pop jam that can sooth your mind and calm your nerves… and who wouldn’t want that?

Empress Of – Don’t Tell Me

What's so good?

I may be a little late on this one, but it still deserves recognition. Empress Of is quickly on the rise with her one-woman take of everything atmospheric and synth-soaked.

“Don’t Tell Me” is a gorgeously composed, downtempo song that’s truly hypnotizing and soothing. The tranquility on this track is penetrating and undeniable. There are obvious influences of genres’ past, which have, of course, made their way back into the music market today. Thankfully for Empress Of, she’s got a knack for this type of sound.

If you’re looking to unwind and let go, I’d recommend turning on Empress Of’s 7″ and taking a few deep breaths. It may be all you need.

Brighter Later – Come and Go

Melbourne duo Brighter Later have recently been releasing some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard. Jaye Kranz and Virginia Bott (who had previously played in bands together) launched this project at the end of last year, and have been busy completing their debut album. Due out in March, Wolves was recorded and produced by Kranz in an old West Melbourne church (which Kranz also calls home).

Following on from the album’s debut single “The Woods” (which we featured just last month), they’ve just put out their second – the equally stunning “Come and Go.” Their new track again highlights the duo’s songwriting and composition talents. They keep things simple, with stripped back vocals and guitar arrangements for the majority of the four minutes. What’s amazing is their ability to captivate a listener with such uncluttered music – a testament to their abilities.

This is truly worthwhile music, and another exciting lead in to Brighter Later’s upcoming album release.

What's so good?

As soon as “The Beauty Surrounds” begins, I imagine a broken heart, slowly dragging itself across the ground, intent on moving forward. Twinkling synths chime in, surrounding vivid memories and providing moments of respite. By the third minute, the solitude of fluttering percussion overwhelms. This is track about love lost, but it’s so lovely, it’s the reason people try to fall in love again and again.

Houses is the project of Chicago-based Dexter Tortoriello and Megan Messin. Between the two of them, they have battled addiction and explored the life of simplicity in one of the most beautiful places. Surely their range of life experience contributes heavily to the intense emotion emanating from their music.

Their upcoming album, A Quite Darkness, is expected for release April 16, 2013 on Downtown Records. In the meanwhile, listen to another single off their album posted here on Indie Shuffle, aptly named,”Beginning.”

TV Soundtrack: New Girl Season 1, Ft. Beach House, Alabama Shakes + More

Urban Dictionary states that adorkable means “both dorky and adorable, a higher state of being all dorks strive towards.” Tthis is the perfect word for Fox’s hit comedy New Girl.

New Girl follows the life of Jess (played by Zooey Deschanel, ex-wife to Death Cab For Cutie front-man Ben Gibbard and the “she” of She & Him), a romantically challenged, awkward, free-spirited, elementary school teacher (see definition for adorkable above), and the three guys whose loft she moves into after a break-up.

The show is filled with plenty of awkward moments and sexual tension as the guys — Nick, Schmidt, and Coach — adjust to life with their goofy new roommate. They even begin to care about Jess, and develop a better understanding of women and themselves through their roommate.

Now, if you were expecting some great music since the show was starring indie rock’s darling Zooey Deschanel, you would be definitely be correct. From the show’s theme song, sung by Zooey herself, as well as bands like Beach House and Alabama Shakes, the New Girl soundtrack is filled with awesome tunes (especially the feature of quite possibly the best song written in the 90s, “No Rain,” by Blind Melon).

What's so good?

Houses is the perfect little indie outfit. With a molasses Beach House pace, Kings of Leon weighted vocals, and Band of Horses serenity, they are a poster child for indie rock. Shoegazers and dancers alike can enjoy their music harmoniously, simultaneously, as one. Maybe even holding hands…

My first experience with Houses was due to a good friend of mine while we were living in Seattle. “Have you heard Houses?” she would ask. Regretfully at the time, my reply was a simple no. So strong was her passion that she promoted them at the local radio station where she worked, and her boyfriend even convinced them to write her a song for Valentine’s Day. Disgustingly, beautifully thoughtful on his part, but the point being that this shows the caliber of musicians Houses really is. Not only are they great songwriters, they are overtly human and caring.

“Beginnings” is their latest lo-fi single — overdue from the soft and lovely “Soak it Up” — and carries a bit more weight and maturity as to be expected from a second release. The lyrics, poignant to say the least, are so depressingly heavy it almost seems possible to wrap yourself in them as they fall from Dexter Tortoriello’s mouth.

A Quite Darkness is due out this April via Downtown Records.

Moscow indie rockers Hospital have just recently dropped their LP When The Trees Were Higher, and coming from Russia, it really is quite special. To be completely honest with you guys, I never thought I would hear such a vibrant and luscious sound coming from an indie Russian band.

“Time Will Tell” is the lead single from the EP; it’s a gorgeous crossover between dream and folk pop. Filled with wholesome and dreamy guitar lines and enchanting electronic atmospherics, Hospital has created an incredible piece of work here that could easily rival many of the Scandinavian and Brit pop bands around Europe.

Ask me what I am listening to right now, and I will respond with the new ON AN ON album, Give In. We all got a taste of ON AN ON a few months ago with their singles “Ghosts” and “The Hunter,” and it left me yearning for more out of this newly formed indie outfit. Despite the coming and going of past bandmates, I believe the current members have formed an even stronger bond together, creating an overall amazing album.

While debating what song to post from their new album, I just couldn’t resist sharing “American Dream” with you all. Since yesterday was a day to remember what the great MLK has done for America, I thought this song was a perfect fit.

Gearing up for their January 29, 2013 release date, ON AN ON’s label, Roll Call Records, have graciously gave us an early glimpse of the album by posting much of it to their SoundCloud page.
