What's so good?

I get a bunch of music submissions sent to me on a daily basis, and I try to comb through them all to find some gems. Well, that definitely worked out for me today, because I came across this great band Shady Elders. They described their sound as dream pop and shoegaze, and they definitely deliver.

After listening to their single “In the Waves,” I was very impressed with the scope of their sound. It’s dense and has a lot of harmonies, which makes for a smooth, luscious listen.

Check out more from Shady Elders on SoundCloud and BandCamp

What's so good?

Beach Day first appeared on Indie Shuffle back in December with “Walking On The Streets,” and they are now preparing for the release of their debut album Trip Trap Attack, due June 18, 2013 via Kanine Records. I’ve been hoping they would release new music sometime this year and now they have!

“Boys” is their first single off Trip Trap Attack. It’s a fun, girl-powered garage/surf rock track with awesome guitar work, solid drumming, and reverb vocals. It also has an old school 60s sound, yet is still current to the indie rock scene.

If you’re into Beach Day, then be sure to grab a pre-order of TripTrap Attack.

What's so good?

Polyvinyl Records just put this great single by Vivian Girls up for free download, and in doing so brought to my attention that we’d never featured it on Indie Shuffle. So, here’s some female-vocalist driven surf pop / punk for your eardrums.

“I Heard You Say” is the second track on the band’s 2011 album Share The Joy, which was released after Ali Koehler’s departure for Best Coast. It’s a pretty simple tune that could just as easily have been recorded in the 1970s. And I guess that’s wherein lies the charm…

What's so good?

Clearly artists work on their material for quite some time. But I just can’t help but feel that we’re currently experiencing the ramifications of the complete dearth of good new music going into Thanksgiving. Basically, everyone had a chance to finalize all of their recordings while trying to get a break from their family, and this week they’re releasing them.

Another way of putting it: when it rains, it pours. All the more reason to have a swimsuit, and fortunately Cayucas has us covered there.

Formerly known as Oregon Bike Trails, Cayucas is now signed to Secretly Canadian. I’m not sure if that makes him Canadian, because his location is listed as Santa Monica. The latter makes sense, given that Cayucas is a beach town off the coast of CA.

“Swimsuit” is part of a two song release, alongside a song we’ve covered twice in the past, “Cayucos.” In a nutshell, it’s surf-rock. Cooooool.

What's so good?

Because you wanted some upbeat twee / pop-punk to give you a pick-me-up on the weekend, here’s a dancey track from Brooklyn-based band Boyfriend.

The band claims to have a versatile style, with the ability to “flip from a new wave throb to a spaghetti western rumble.” At this rate, I’ll believe it.

I haven’t actually sought out any other songs by the band, but listening to Quay Quinn-Settel’s vocals on this track basically satiates all the curiosity I have. Not to mention how awesome her name is…

What's so good?

I can’t begin to explain to you how difficult it was to find any information on this band. However, what I did find out from Google is that Cayucos is a nice little beach town in California. Well, I can certainly say Cayucas sure make the right sort of music for any beach town.

We’re not sure what the relationship of the band is to the town, but this song is definitely very, “Let’s take a romantic road trip up to Cayucos so we can frolic around on the beach!” Everything about “Cayucos” is fun, from the way that the lead singer verbalizes Cayucos to that casual guitar strum and punctuating percussion.

If you’re hitting up the beach anytime soon, “Cayucos” is a must have on your playlist.

What's so good?

Portland’s duo Pure Bathing Culture has released a video for their single, “Ivory Coast,” and it’s really quite… endearing.

If you’re unfamiliar with Pure Bathing Culture, their musical style is smooth and orchestral indie pop. It’s perfect music for the fall season, too.

Their video for “Ivory Coast” is thoroughly entertaining, to say the least. Lead singer, Sarah Versprille is completely smittin by guitarist Dan Hindman, and his alien charm. Literally. He’s an alien. And they make an alien baby who then must go with Dan back to outer space (I think?). But before all of that, the video depicts a dear and loving relationship between mother and alien son accompanied by a fantastic song, of course.

I’ve really never seen a video quite like this before. As outlandish as it may appear, it’s got a relatable quality to it. To hear Pure Bathing Culture’s EP, order it here.

What's so good?

As my longing for summer slowly dissipates with the cold, bleak weather that San Francisco continually brings forward, I find solace in listening to songs that remind me of the sunny weather that I miss so dearly. One song that always triumphs over many sugary-pop tracks is Frankie Rose and the Outs’ 2010 sock-hopping diddy, “Candy.”

The band’s ringleader, Rose, aka former Vivian Girls/Crystal Stilts/Dum Dum Girls member, dutifully delivers an evocative take on a vintage era while giving off a hint of lo-fi garage and a DIY aesthetic. Think Best Coast with a touch of Velvet Underground. Vivian Girls with a dabble of Cults. Any way you want to describe it, it’s definitely worth exploring.

What's so good?

As the summer winds down, it’s hard not to feel nostalgic about all that fun in the sun. Everything changes, and though we wish it didn’t have to, change is just nature’s way of telling us to push on.

To embody that feeling, Phantasmagoria offers the anthemic, “Summer (Living a Dream)” (download here.)

Phantasmagoria (Christopher Jarvis and Lianna Vanicelli) have been making their mark on the Detroit scene with their soulful, lo-fi electro pop and with their new album, Currents, it’s obvious their sound is maturing.

Euphoric soundscapes accentuated by haunting layers of fuzzed out synths and vocal delays, Phantasmagoria’s productions are light-hearted, but maintain a somber awareness that darkness exists. “Summer (Living a Dream)” is no exception, as the tonality rises, falls, and morphs like a mood-ring. The lyrics scatter like leaves, as if written in stream of consciousness, and sneak up alongside a suggestively deeper message than their simplicity implies.

It’s a feel-good song, but one with defenses, and a poignant reminder that time passes us by.

For a country with a population of less than 25 million, the Australian music scene certainly is booming with talent. I hadn’t heard of Melbourne-based quartet Twerps until a few days ago, but they’ve instantly won me over with their lo-fi, surf pop style.

We last covered Aussie band SURES back in January, with single “Poseidon.” At the time, we were pretty impressed with their surf-pop styling: heavy reverb, simple bass and percussion, and wonderful harmonies up top.

The good news is that with their latest single “Stars,” the four-piece band are picking up right where they left off.

The song will be featured on the band’s upcoming debut EP, Stars. You can get more deets on the band over on their Facebook page.

What's so good?

Something about the name Dum Dum Girls is catchy. So catchy in fact, that I could have sworn I’d heard of them before, though you’d be hard pressed to get me to remember song.

At least now, with the release of their first single “Lord Knows,” I’ll have a better baseline to associate with the name. The song
is a pretty standard indie rock lick, reminiscent of the much-more-famous Best Coast.

What's so good?

Haven’t heard anything from Tilly & The Wall in quite a while now. I was expecting fun, indie pop — but “Love Riot” is a pretty hard indie rock song. Really hard, in fact. So much so that I’m going to categorize this as punk rock for the sake of the playlist.

What's so good?

As of late, Grimes has been surfacing across several media platforms for her distinctive music, risky style and absurd videography. With her latest album Visions receiving plenty of hype treatment, it was only a matter of time before we came across a Grimes cover that really impressed us.

Not a stranger to Indie Shuffle for her rendition of The Ronettes “Why Don’t They Let Us Fall In Love”, Maya Laner is welcomed back with open arms for her latest release.

Skillfully covering Grimes track “Oblivion”, Laner mixes up the original a bit, adding a resonating surf rock treatment with plenty of melodic jingling, guitar and sugary vocals. Despite its new embellishments, “Oblivion” still conducts the catchy undertones of the original version but with smooth retro style.

Here’s what she had to say about the song:

“I chose to cover Grimes primarily because I thought it would be an interesting challenge to revamp an electronic song. I’ve also just been really enamored with her lately. She has a really unique sound and look, and I admire her a lot as a female solo artist… I also really like the irony of the title “Oblivion” which implies being unaware of your surroundings. That concept is then juxtaposed with the narrator’s hyper awareness of bad things happening to them at night.”

What's so good?

It’s always quite distressing when artists debut a new album, especially when their former releases was such a success. Can they live up to the hype? Do they sound completely different? Have they sold out? These are questions music critics and fans always ask themselves in reaction and response to what they hear but rarely does an album spark fresh intrigue and nostalgia at the same time.

With the triumph of Teen Dream under their belts, Beach House has welcomed another stunning album with a suitable title. Bloom, the Baltimore duo’s fourth album, is big and full of power while unquestionably staying true to what they are best at: creating hypnotizing, tranquil tunes that send you on a hazed-out, magical journey toward a euphoric daydream.

It’s clear that Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand have been utilizing their extraordinary technical skills to bring swathes of layered emotion through very simple instrumentation. In an interview with Pitchfork, Scally refers to Bloom in comparison to previous albums saying, “I hate it when bands change between records, that’s not the way we work.” He is also quoted saying the album is like “a huge crystal, spinning in a cave with Star War figurines.”

In anticipation for the release, Indie Shuffle has already prematurely evaluated tracks “Lazuli”, and “Myth” with an overall consensus of them being “absolutely beautiful”, “delicate” and “tasteful” — statements I don’t think anyone can argue.

“The Hours” (the song featured above) has the musical quality and brash honesty to set fire to being fearful in love. The emblematic lyrics “Change your mind, don’t care about me/Frightened eyes looking back at me/Change your mind, don’t leave without me,” is something we can all relate to. Yes, most of us can sympathize, but Legrand makes the tender feeling sound so beautifully buoyant doesn’t she?

“Wild” starts off with a buzz and a gaping surge, while “Troublemaker” ignites a rather dark and enticing cacophony. The stylistic shifts between choruslines and instrumentals in these two tracks are both powerful and pervasive while the lyrical arrangements are reminiscent and emotional.

“Wishes” is a delicately harmonized track full of glimmering electronics, organ swells and Victoria Legrand’s softly sung sentiments and sorrows. To me, “Wishes” sounds like a stellar bonus track that could have been included in Teen Dream.

In Bloom’s final moments we are left with an album that is already getting the kind of momentum and attention indie bands would dream about these days. All we can hope for is more solid albums from this fantastical group in times to come. With that said friends, it’s time to sit back, relax, light up and (finally) enjoy Bloom in its entirety.

What's so good?

What’s interesting about the new Best Coast album The Only Place is that track 9, “Dreaming My Life Away,” appears to have been released as a bonus track all the way back in 2009 on the band’s Make You Mine 7″.

My best guess is that’s why it sounds so different to the mostly-redundant style embodied by the group. In fact, I’m going to go so far as to say that this song is surprisingly pleasant to listen to.

What's so good?

Bleeding Knees Club just want to have fun. They’re a couple of surfie punk kids from Australia’s Gold Coast that started jamming in a garage together, and recently turned out album Nothing To Do — an ode to sun, girls, and generally just being irresponsible.

Let’s be honest. Bleeding Knees Club isn’t the next intellectual math-rock band. There’s nothing complicated or showy about their music, but that works in their favor, as their short, punchy songs are easy to listen to and damn catchy as well.

Standout songs are opening track “Teenage Girls,” the charmingly titled “Beach Slut,” as well as their latest single from the album “Nothing To Do.” They all sound a little bit the same but hey, it’s a good formula and the songs are all short enough that it never gets tedious.

I feel a little bit of a phoney listening to Bleeding Knees Club as I’m long out of high school, but there’s something enjoyably immature about listening to songs like “Hate Me” and “Problem Child.” So be a rebel. Put Bleeding Knees Club on your playlist and listen to it when you’re suited up and on your way to work. Maybe knock a garbage can over on your way. You know the boys would be proud.

What's so good?

You can consider me one of the biggest Best Coast skeptics out there. I have often argued that their music is redundant and borderline boring. But, they’ve surprised me a bit with “The Only Place.”

The song is the namesake for their sophomore album, The Only Place. It’ll be released May 14th, but you can pre-order the album via Wichita Recordings now, if you’re feeling compelled.

What's so good?

It would be silly to claim that throwback pop/punk sounds better in an Australian accent. But there’s certainly something excellent about Sydney’s Royal Headache and their new single “Down the Lane.”

A well-crafted, tightly composed pop song at its core, the track’s driving beat and catchy hook provides a solid base for a touch of fuzzy guitar feedback and a hint of growl that toughens up almost Buddy Holly-esque vocals. There’s a richness to the sound — perhaps it’s Royal Headache’s light touch with the fuzz, preventing them from obscuring the musicality of their sound. Whatever the case, “Down the Lane” is most definitely a good time of a tune.

What's so good?

For a virtually unknown young band, Sydney’s SURES have a big year ahead of them if the start of 2012 is anything to go by. The surf poppers were handed a support slot for Best Coast’s Sydney show in late January. They were then chosen as one of the Triple J Unearthed winners to appear at Laneway Festival alongside an incredible line-up which includes SBTRKT, Feist, The Drums, and M83.

Their track “Poseidon” is what surf pop is all about – heavy reverb, simple bass and percussion, with delicious harmonies drifting over the top. It’s easy to get lost in, sun-drenched and dreamy.

SURES’ music suits the Southern hemisphere summer to a tee. While everyone else suffering through the winter may have to wait a little while to break out their board shorts and Hawaiian shirts, SURES may prove the perfect distraction to your chills.

What's so good?

For our viewing pleasure, Denver indie-pop dwellers Tennis released the video for their latest B-side track “Deep in the Woods” alongside their newest Patrick Carney-produced single, “Origins” (out now via Forest Family). Be patient when you click “play” above – track takes about 16 seconds to kick in.

In a recent Rolling Stone article, Singer Alaina Moore explains that “Deep in the Woods” is based on Shirley Jackson’s novel “We Have Always Lived in a Castle.” “It is the story of two sisters, devoted to each other to an extent that borders on mania,” Moore says.

It features two disturbingly close sisters living in total isolation, braiding each other’s hair and participating in unmentionable acts together, all while looking extremely blasé about it all. The video, paired with the Tennis’ lighthearted vocals and sugary disposition, adds a blithe subtext to a life seemingly full of perpetual melancholia. Although the segregated life may be a little drab at times, what better way to keep yourself occupied than to kill people and find arduous ways to dispose of their bodies? Sounds like a severe case of cabin fever to me. Check out the video below:

Don’t forget to check out the band’s Patrick Carney-produced sophomore LP, Young and Old, when it hits stores on February 14 via Fat Possum.

What's so good?

Boyfriend/girlfriend collabs are typically something that can be taken with a grain of salt. Many look forward to it when they first hear about it, then the release debuts, and within a couple of days, it’s old news. Well, I believe it’s time to shine light on a collaboration done right. When noise punk rocker Nathan Williams from Wavves and his boo, Bethany Cosentino from Best Coast, decided to get together, it seemed like a match made in indie music heaven. While going on tours together, many fans anticipated the day when the two would join forces musically and produce something magical. Well, the day is here, as the pair comes together on the fuzzy garage rock track, “Nodding Off.”

Taken from Wavves’ recently released Life Sux EP, the track blends Williams’ familiar garage rock vibe with thrashed guitars and lovelorn lyrics. Cosentino’s role in the track doesn’t overshadow the Wavves magnetism although you can still make out her gentle “oooh’s” and “ahhhs” in the background.

Both known for their youthful summertime anthems, “Nodding Off” is the musical equivalent of a 1960’s drunken beach party full of stoned surf-rock outcasts and striking females with daddy issues. But really though, how much could life suck for Williams? He’s got a badass girlfriend that can rock as hard as he does and an upcoming tour that could possibly melt faces.

What's so good?

If there were any show billed as a boys and girl’s night out, it would have been Dum Dum Girls with Crocodiles last Tuesday October 4 at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. The audience was pretty mixed with guys and gals, each eager to hear the fuzzy distortion and hazy pop of the two main acts.

It was a rainy night, but no one let what was going on outside affect their dreamy moods inside. Crocodiles took the stage after Colleen Green, much larger than original duo of Brandon Welchez and Charles Rowell, by adding a drummer, bassist and keyboard players. A set of mainly new tunes, Welchez and Rowell looked at home on stage, alternating pedals, distortion and keeping a constant delay on everything minus the perfect-beat of their drummer and bassist.

The energy level was somewhere between an art show and a show in your friend’s garage. Welchez’s wife and Dum Dum Girls frontswoman Dee Dee Penny joined them onstage for vocal back-up on one of their first singles, “I Wanna Kill Tonight,” from their debut album Summer of Hate. This definitely injected some adrenaline into the crowd, and some people even danced (kinda). The band had great chemistry and played straight through their set, no chit-chat, just music.

The Dum Dum Girls came on with definite stage presence. Rockin’ all black outfits — with lace stockings and blouses, black bras, high-waisted shorts and boots — each member kept the audience (girls and boys) captivated. They played through hits from their first album, I Will Be, as well as new tunes from the freshly released Only In Dreams. Very reminiscent of Best Coast, the ladies proved they were more than pretty faces, keeping a perfect beat and letting their music match equal to their hazy vocals. However, one got the feeling Penny’s vocals were much stronger than showcased in the mix.

The set was pretty long, filled with well-written pop songs, mixed up with some surf punk and even a Smith’s cover (“There Is A Light That Never Goes Out”’). The highlight of the evening came from Penny’s amazing vocals on “Coming Down,” a beautiful ballad filled with luscious reverb, a pillow for Penny to really let her voice stretch out. Clocking in well past six minutes, it really kept the audience on the edge of their seat, until Penny hit (twice!) a note that was just at her reach. That note proved to be the climax of the song, with everyone captivated and in awe.

This show proved that the Dum Dum Girls know how to excel at the pop music game. They got the look, talent and no-nonsense live set that only means one thing: get out of their way.

What's so good?

Before the year is out, Friends’ Samantha Urbani might become one of the coolest women in pop. Her stars are aligned and the rainbow-clad gods of rhythm like what they see. She’s fun, has a subtle subtext of sexual energy that seems to reel people in, she’s from Brooklyn, and she leads a band peddling some of most catchy tropical pop tunes of the decade so far.

Friends’ 250-record run of Friend Crush sold out on pre-orders alone, but arguably it’s this second 7” that confirms Lucky Number Music (the people behind Darwin Deez) have a worthy partner in Friends’ and won’t need to traipse around radio stations and websites selling them. These tracks are gonna sell themselves. You can just tell. Friends’ first UK gig at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen last Tuesday (w/ Caged Animals) was packed, and left people protesting for more tunes when they went off. No one wanted them to go.

“I’m His Girl” is about the state of a healthy relationship, damning jealousy, and control in the ongoing and complicated pursuit of love. It’s lyrically direct and smartly delivered. In sultry fashion pouts and funky bass lines, the song struts like Destiny’s Child in their “Survivor” days with a sense of entitlement that’s sexy, finger-tingling, and highly catching. Urbani’s warm embrace is as sweet and mildly threatening as the paradox of a velvet vice. In her deft delivery, “I’m His Girl” manages to be both heart-felt commentary and dirty rotten flirting, woven together into some giddy, lethal love mix. Tight, intoxicating and brilliant.

“I’m His Girl” is out October 31 (limited to 500 copies) and you can pre-order a copy here. Definitely recommended live for “I’m His Girl,” “My Boo,” and other new tracks.
