What's so good?

Back in January, we premiered a track called “T W A (Till We Arrive)” by Texas MCs Tonio and Iroc Mics. Since y’all seemed to enjoy that one, I’m hopeful you’ll like this new single as well. “Grind” features Bay Area rapper Hay Sus, and in Tonio’s own words “is for everyone persevering and working through adversity.”

I can relate to that, and more importantly I find “Grind” a very easy track to vibe with — a kind of silky Saturday morning hip-hop that goes well with cereal, cartoons, deep thoughts, whatever floats your boat. There’s a lot of hip-hop on the web these day, and the least I could do is hype a couple hard-working MCs that can flex without putting Molly all up in our drinks.

Big up Tonio and Hay Sus. Looking forward to whatever’s next.

What's so good?

It was only a matter of time before I hyped another talented Dallas artist. Antonio Topete (otherwise known as Tonio) is a rapper, singer, and producer — at least according to his Twitter. I haven’t heard much of his singing. As for the rapping, color me impressed.

“Coolin Everyday” is produced by Bahwee, another artist I’ll need to start paying attention to this year. The track feels from a similar cloth of big names like Big Sean and Mac Miller. Something about the flow, and I mean that as a good thing. The beat’s on point, leaving Tonio plenty of space to moonwalk through his bars. He sounds at home on the mic, which is like 85 percent of what I think it takes to make even a small splash in the game.

Tonio should drop an EP sometime this month. Something to keep an ear and eye out for, perhaps.

What's so good?

I’ve been listening to their Mixcloud radio shows for a while now, so it’s about time I showed a little love to Soulection. They’re a label/collective/movement doing cool things out of Los Angeles, and they just dropped their 21st release, a nine track EP by a rapper named Waldo.

Waldo is an MC out of Grand Rapids, Mich. He was recommended to Soulection by producer Sango, whose quality beats can often be heard on the label’s weekly radio show. Apparently, Waldo is only 20 years old. Always room to grow, but no denying the young man has talent. “Poison” is the real deal. From Sango’s lush beat to Waldo’s crazy ill rhymes and flow.

Here’s what Waldo had to say about the release:

“Honestly, Pick Your Own Poison is about finding your lane in life. Whether if the lane you choose to pursue is right or wrong it’s still the poison you chose. It’s also about my life and the poison I chose.”

What's so good?

Wow, this is actually kinda easy to listen to. Kanye West, Jay-Z and Big Sean joining forces for “Clique,” as part of the GOOD Music awesomness.

Sure it’s not indie, but this ain’t the first time we’ve posted rap. Cruel Summer will be available in stores September 18th. So far, five tracks have been confirmed, including “Mercy” and “New God Flow.”

What's so good?

Exile is a robust white man in his 30s from Italian descent, whose grandfather played polka and in Mariachi bands decades ago in Echo Park. This man is also responsible for introducing the hip hop world to classic artists through classic records. From Aloe Blacc to Blu to Fashawn, Exile has helped foster incredible artistry. He has also done solo work, from producing instrumental projects under his own name to providing production for cats like Snoop Dogg, Big Sean, and Talib Kweli.

4TRK MND is his long-in-the-works solo rap LP, just released this October. Yes, Exile rapping for an entire album. While it’s pretty much an open-and-shut case as to whether or not Exile brings the heat with the beats, some of you serious rapper people — the ones that refuse to smile or do anything other than solemnly nod their head to a song — probably might not be into this too much.

Exile is a great MC. That said, there are many who have very rigid definitions of greatness on the mic. Ex is far from a Nas or a Blu; he’s not going to dizzy you with alliterations and compound rhymes on this album. He’s going to make you laugh, sometimes confuse you, with his brazen and bizarre sense of humor. His cadences and patterns are what those who just skim through music might call rudimentary, but the aim of this project is to touch the heart, not so much the mind.

At times, Ex breaks from his goofy persona to bear his soul, most openly on “Mommas’ Song” and “Younger Days,” where Ex reminisces about both his deceased parents and the tumultous childhood that influenced his approach to music. Sounding like it was recorded when Ex was still underage, 4TRK MND has an instant warmth and intimacy to it that might have you thinking you’ve heard it before.

What's so good?

I find it’s increasingly rare that mashups work really well, but The Jane Doze has nailed it by bringing together Big Sean’s “Bullshittin’” and Zeds Dead’s “Coffee Break.” And do you know what makes this even more interesting? The Jane Doze is a female DJ-duo. That’s right…two lovely ladies at the turntables.

Observations aside, I’m actually really glad these two tracks came together. I’d listened to the original by Zeds Dead a few times, but ultimately felt that it was missing a certain something to make it worthy of sharing. Right about now, I’ve got no hesitations.

Big Sean – Too Fake (Ft. Chiddy Bang and Hockey)

What's so good?

Big Sean kills it with “Too Fake,” the highlight off the Detroit emcee’s final mixtape of his trilogy, Finally Famous Vol. 3. Philly based Chiddy Bang (Chiddy and Xaphoon Jones) provide the beat and third verse while the chorus is sampled from Hockey’s single, “Too Fake.”

Sean delivers a performance with more swagger than most guys have in their pinky finger. He owns it with lyrics that purposely beat him down just so he can spit back phrases like “suck my dick then choke on a nut.” Why not, right? Big Sean doesn’t give a fuHHH, he just lets his conquests be proven as he treks across the hiphop world with blunt banter. But what do you expect from a guy who’s buying O’s of greenery, comparing his love of trees to that of Avatars.

And that beat! It almost proves that indie-duo Chiddy Bang are a couple of Drexel dropouts that really didn’t need an education to get them noticed. Chiddy’s verse has the same fire that is heard in the rest of the song. No wonder why there’s been so much buzz about this release.

A big shout out to Hockey for the hook too. Wouldn’t be the same without it.
