What's so good?

I’ll be first to admit that I’m a bit of a music snob. When a song I like becomes too popular, I’ve been known to turn my back on the artist. There’s been plenty of examples of my hating, and Sydney singer/songwriter Matt Corby has received more than his fair share. Maybe it’s his obvious talent, maybe it’s his scruffy good looks and piercing eyes, or perhaps I just got sick of every radio station playing his hit single “Brother” to death. Whatever it was, I’m sorry Matt, you’re alright.

He’s actually more than alright. The young star gives off a lovely humble vibe despite his growing international success. He’s back in Australia at the moment, having toured the world over the last year, and he just released his latest single “Resolution.” When I found out, the hate got to me (of course), and I was ready to write the new track off as boring and commercial. But then I listened to it, and it was good — the dude can sing! I listened to it a few more times and decided I should stop hating.

Well done, Matt. You’re pretty cool. I can’t guarantee the hate won’t be back when everyone picks this track up, but for today at least, you’re the man.

What's so good?

It’s not every day that your second single gets roughly 50,000 plays in one week, but that’s exactly what Melbourne’s Vance Joy (aka James Keogh) has experienced with “Riptide.” Hopefully, it’s not just James’ mum that is pressing that play button on SoundCloud!

All jokes aside, if you’re a fan of the old folk-pop scene, then you’ll love the sound he’s producing at the moment. I know I’ve spoken about my love for the banjo before, but the ukulele in this particular number lifts this track to new heights. Much like Mumford & Sons have their banjo, Vance Joy has his trusty ukulele.

There isn’t actually one boring bit in this song! It’s filled with numerous hooks and well-constructed bridges; there’s so much going on, but James’ strong vocal performance will have you captivated all the way through.

The single comes from his debut EP God Loves You When You’re Dancing, to be released this Friday in Australia. Enjoy!

What's so good?

I got hooked on Lord Huron the moment I heard their song “The Stranger.” Which meant that when this single popped up in my inbox, I knew pretty quickly that I’d want to feature it as the Song of the Day.

“Lonesome Dreams” comes off their album by the same name, Lonesome Dreams. It’s been available since October, but I’ll admit that I didn’t actually go out there and grab it. So, this new single is serving as a great reminder of what I should have done…which was to actually procure the album.

What's so good?

Normally weekends are pretty worthless for new music. Especially new music that’s good. But when The Strokes and Local Natives both released new singles last night, well — the norm was thrown on its head.

“You & I” is the third single released from Local Natives’ upcoming album Hummingbird (available January 29, 2013), following up the earlier “Breakers” and “Heavy Feet.”

As the opening track to the album, “You & I” has a tropical feel to it. With crooning vocals layered on top, it seems like a slightly weird way to set the tone for an album — I’d rather expect this to be best suited as a closing track.

Either way, it’s nice to hear new music from these lads, especially because they’ve been consistently good as of late.

Claps, they’re using claps! Local Natives guaranteed themselves a spot as today’s Song of the Day not only because they’ve written a good song, but because there’s clapping. I’m a total sucker for clapping in songs.

“Heavy Feet” is the second single off the bands’ upcoming album Hummingbird, due around the end of January. Given this will be the band’s sophomore album, I’ve found myself pretty skeptical of their potential success. However, this song has put some of my fears to rest.

Will Hummingbird be one of the better albums of 2012? Lord, I hope so!

What's so good?

Port Isla’s debut single “Sinking Ship” is one of the most incredibly infectious folk-pop songs I’ve heard in ages. In fact, I can’t remember the last time that I came across a song that so quickly got me dancing.

Based out of Norwich in the UK, I tip my hat to Blah Blah Blah Science for uncovering this one. There’s a good chance that if you’re a fan of Mumford & Sons or Boy and Bear, you just might fall head over heels for them as well.

Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to get back to dancing and clapping.

One of the truly awesome aspects of modern technology is that it has allowed a number of bedroom artists to fight for a chance at the spotlight. No longer are $50,000 recording deals needed for studio time — just about anyone can fire up their Macbook and start pulling together tracks.

Oliver Gale of Blue Boats is one such artist, and his new track “I Am The Only One” is causing a splash, so to speak. At the very least, it flagged my attention.

The vocals on “I Am The Only One” draw a striking comparison to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, indie darlings of the early-2000s. But the comparison stops there, as an overarching mellowed-out bedroom vibe takes over the track. Ultimately, I find myself reminded of Astronauts, etc, and that’s a good thing.

The blogosphere has been buzzing with news that Local Natives performed five new songs at a live show last night. I sorta brushed that off because hey, we try not to post live songs.

But low and behold, a tipster (thanks, Aaron!) pointed us in the direction of this official studio release.

“Breakers” is the first single off the band’s upcoming album, Hummingbird (available January 29, 2013). Many of you will recall the band’s debut Gorilla Manor in late 2009, which included 12 fantastic folk-rock tunes. From the sound of things, this new release should be a good one as well.

Art of Sleeping – Like a Thief

Brisbane’s Art of Sleeping are a truly talented band. Following their debut EP Colourblind (2010), the five-piece gained plenty of local attention earlier this year with their stunning single “Empty Hands.” This was the first single off their new EP, Like a Thief, which was produced by the renowned Yanto Browning (The Medics, The Jungle Giants) which will be released in Australia on Friday October 12 (via Dew Process/Universal).

The EP includes five tracks of incredible power and sentiment, commencing with the aforementioned “Empty Hands.” Second single “Above the Water” has a wonderful swinging rhythm to it – opening softly before Caleb Hodges’ goose bump-inducing vocals kick in. Title track “Like a Thief” is another standout, again a vast and expansive song which showcases the band’s completeness.

Having already developed a reputation for their commanding live shows, Art of Sleeping’s indie rock/folk releases are a fantastic addition to Australia’s overflowing musical family.

Lord Huron – The Stranger

What's so good?

Lord Huron’s “The Stranger” has been floating around the internet for almost two years, which makes it slightly odd that the song will be featured in the band’s upcoming EP Time To Run. Even more bizarre, the EP is the LA-based band’s debut.

The band was started as the solo project of lead-man Ben Schneider, which might explain why they’ve been sitting on this track for so long. Today they’ve grown to become a collective of varied instrumental talent, the end result a beautiful cacophony of folk-pop.

Time To Run is actually a precursor to the band’s debut full-length Lonesome Dreams, which should be available some time in early 2013. We’ll definitely be keeping you posted!

What's so good?

Pretty much every review of Cuckoo Chaos’ “Super Skeleton” is making light of the fact that they describe their music as “a nice, firm ass in the palm of your hands.” So there you have it — clearly not much more going on here.

Okay, okay. Who are these guys? Appears that they’re a San Diego based quintet with a sound somewhere between Dismemberment Plan and Grizzly Bear. The recipe makes for perfectly entertaining indie rock, a sound we’re quite enjoying. Particularly where the guitar solo is considered.

It’s about high time our Song of the Day was some good old indie rock. And who better to lead the way than Grizzly Bear?

“Yet Again” is the second single off their soon-to-be-released Shields (behind “Sleeping Ute“), available September 18th.

It’s actually been a reasonable chunk of time since their last album Veckatimest was unleashed to the masses. The album debuted at the top of the US Billboard Top Independent albums…and I won’t be surprised to see this showing similar performance.

Sydney-based Battleships are back with a second single “Your Words,” which does nothing but contribute to the buzz surrounding this talented band. After their gorgeous first single “In Retrospect” enthralled Australian fans, it was also well-received in the UK, receiving regular airplay on BBC6 and Q Radio. They’re also scheduled to appear at this year’s Big Sound Music Conference in Brisbane – Australia’s SXSW counterpart.

“In Your Words” is again a highly expressive piece of music. Battleships have a real talent for building throughout their songs, and this track achieves this perfectly. From a gentle opening, the track climaxes in powerful, driving guitar layers and rolling percussion – with lead singer Jordan Sturdee’s warm vocals rising and falling throughout.

With their debut EP not far off (the release is scheduled for October), and two terrific singles in the bag, Battleships look poised to blow up in the back-half of 2012.

Husky – History’s Door

What's so good?

More than six months have passed since we last caught up with Husky, but today subpop released a new single by the Australian quartet.

The first time I heard any of their music was when Hugh covered the album Forever So, featuring “Dark Sea” as the lead single. That song instantly captivated my eardrums, so there was very little surprise when “History’s Door” did just the same.

Fortunately, this song demonstrates that there is little hope of Australia’s consistently amazing music running dry. Right now, bands like this are my bread and butter.

What's so good?

Holy crap. Occasionally a song comes along that just takes you by complete surprise.

With “Boy,” Brisbane-based singer-songwriter Emma Louise has created one of the most amazing songs I’ve heard recently. At multiple points throughout the song I found myself completely floored by twists, turns, and absolute harmonic perfection.

You might find my words a bit hyperbolic — they are — but that’s beside the point. This song just made my morning.

Sydney folk-band Tin Sparrow are back with a brand new EP, the follow-up to last year’s release, From the Sun. Their debut won them a legion of fans, as did their energetic live performances, and more will no doubt follow with the release of Fair & Verdant Woods.

They’ve been a busy lot over the past few months, with tours supporting fellow folksters Matt Corby and Husky, and they’re also scheduled to join Boy and Bear on their upcoming national tour.

Fair & Verdant Woods sees Tin Sparrow’s evident growth as a band. It’s got all the aspects that made From the Sun so enjoyable, but there’s an obvious added polish. Having worked with members of brilliant Australian bands Belles Will Ring and the Middle East during recording may have had something to do with this.

Proceedings commence with new single “My Own,” a whistle-friendly, rolling track – very much in the mold of their old work. “Hector Myola” (released last year) includes lead guitar Dean McLeod’s standout slide-guitar riffs, while ”Bricks” sees heartfelt vocal interplay between Matt Amery and Sonja Van Hummel.

I really love Tin Sparrow – their music never ceases to put a smile on my face. There is a glut of folk music at the moment, especially in Australia, but there’s something about Tin Sparrow that stands out. An unpretentious group, there is an obvious love to their music which adds to their music.

What's so good?

Out of Brisbane, indie rock band The Art of Sleeping are drawing plenty of attention with their latest single “Empty Hands.” Following on from their debut EP Colourblind (2010), this is the first single off a new EP, and will be released later in the year. With a sound situated somewhere between fellow Australian bands Boy and Bear and the Temper Trap, this is a band which has the potential for similar international success.

“Empty Hands” is a driving, intense anthem which builds quickly from the opening chords. Layered percussion and wandering guitar riffs entertain while lead vocalist Caleb Hodges’ powerful tones linger above.

A growing local following is bound to swell with the release of more material. More of the same please.

Winter People – Gallons

What's so good?

Winter People don’t do things the regular way, and their intriguing, hand-crafted music shows this. A six-piece band from Sydney, this veritable troop of musicians boasts five vocalists and two violin players. Each of their songs feel lovingly created, a welcome change in a world where music is manufactured without a second thought.

Winter People’s debut album is due mid-2012, some three years after their EP The Dog Years was completed. Having already released the album’s first single, the beautifully poignant “Wishing Bone,” the next step is their new track “Gallons.” A truly powerful and moving song, “Gallons” is the perfect platform for the band to launch their album.

A gentle opening quickly transforms into a thundering, boisterous offering with a constant bass drum the track’s heartbeat. Lead Dylan Baskind has an incredibly enticing voice, similar to that of the National’s baritone Matt Berninger. In fact, this track has those evocative and moving tones that the National have made their own. The echoing violin and soft backing vocals provide the perfect completion to an altogether excellent track.

Having been around for some time though, I find it strange that Winter People are yet to have received the accolades they clearly deserve. That seems likely to change, very soon.

Hottest 100 from 2011: A Triple J Playlist, Ft. Gotye, M83 + More

Government-funded Triple J is Australia’s biggest alternative radio station. Triple J is heavily involved in supporting the burgeoning local music scene, as well as bringing the world’s best music to its listeners. Beginning broadcasts in 1975, Triple J has helped launched the careers of countless big-name bands.

Each year, Triple J holds a countdown of previous year’s favorite tracks as voted by the listeners. Broadcasted on Australia Day (January 26), the countdown has become a part of the day’s celebrations with countless BBQ’s blaring the year’s top 100 tracks throughout the day.

Here are the Top 5, showcasing the best of 2011’s best Australian and International tunes (a complete list can be found here).

What a track, what a saxophone solo! The French group’s double album, Hurry up, we’re dreaming was one of the most complete albums of the year. The feature trackwas just one of those songs which make you break out into a smile as soon as the first beat kicks in. Well deserved.

From Boy and Bear’s much lauded debut album Moonfire, “Feeding Line” was the band’s third entry in the top 100. This highlighted an incredible year for theSydney band, who cleared up with five awards at the 2011 ARIA awards (Australia’s equivalent to the Grammies).

Peaking at the ideal time, Matt Corby’s ”Brother” was a dark horse on Australia Day after dominating the airwaves in the shadows of 2011. Corby’s EP Into the Flame introduced him as Australia’s answer to Jeff Buckley, with his incredible vocals and delicate acoustic stylings.

Despite El Camino being one of my favorite albums of 2011, I was surprised and rather pleased when “Lonely Boy“ was voted in at number two. Having never polled higher than 67 and receiving two entries last year, the Ohio natives hit the jackpot in Australia with their marvelous single.

Song: Gotye ft. Kimbra - Somebody That I Used to Know [Downloa d]

Australia’s worst kept secret was revealed as Gotye (Wally De Backer) romped home to take first place. No matter how many times I hear this track, I still enjoy it, and obviously Australia feels the same. The song even helped to launch the career of Kimbra, who herself had three tracks in the top 100 on her own. A masterpiece by a delightfully humble man.

What's so good?

With so many bands and artists making folk music, it’s refreshing to find someone that’s doing it a differently. Husky make wonderful folk music, but with a twist. The Melbourne-based group have pieced together a number of musical backgrounds to develop an impossibly beautiful hybrid sound.

2011 has been a busy year for the guys. After winning the Triple J Unearthed Push Over Competition, they have been touring furiously. Having supported a multitude of big names including Devandra Banhart, Noah and the Whale, Kimbra and Gotye, Husky will now be setting off on their own national tour to celebrate the recent release of their debut album, Forever So.

The album was recorded over some months in a backyard shed belonging to lead singer Husky Gawenda,and then mixed by Noah Georgeson (the Strokes, Devandra Banhart) in L.A. Forever So is a beautifully crafted record. The songs are deep and powerfully written. Gideon Priess’ intricate keys are a highlight, and link in perfectly with Gawenda’s heartfelt, angelic voice.

“History’s Door,” the album’s first single, was a late addition to the album – only being added at the last minute despite some debate. What an addition it was, with the gorgeous folksy ballad highlighting the bands many musical strengths. Interestingly titled “Fake Moustache” goes in another direction, driving swiftly with almost could be considered a swing beat. The offbeat guitar and echoed vocals give this tune a haunting feel. Current single “Dark Sea” is also slightly shadowy, with Gawenda’s impossibly beautiful voice drifting delicately over simple but elegant backing melodies.

What's so good?

Macquarie University, hidden away in Sydney suburbia, is not a place where you’d expect to find a hotbed of music talent. Over the past few years however, a number of acts have emerged from this institute, with Boy & Bear and Art vs Science the most successful. Tin Sparrow appear to be destined for similar success with the release of their debut EP From the Sun.

Tin Sparrow, who usually operates as a four-piece, strikes me as a band who just loves playing together. Every time I listen to From the Sun, I can’t help but crack a dopey grin no matter how hard I resist, so their frivolity clearly translates over to their recording.

While the EP is on the short side, the four tracks are beautifully created and promise much for future recordings. Similar, but perhaps sunnier than Boy and Bear, the tracks have an alt-country style, with a bounty of vast group harmonies, slide guitar and swingin’ rhythms. Their live shows also include plenty of whistling, interesting percussion and countless forms of general yahooing.

“Fool’s Gold” just gets my vote as top track. It’s probably the one which gets my grin to its dopiest level, the deciding factor. This is a song which is difficult not to get swept up in, with the floating harmonies being finished off nicely by a plucky guitar solo. “For you” is a little dreamier, with excellent use of the usually under-appreciated xylophone. A glockenspiel is also used in other tracks, how cheerful is that!

This is a young band in industry terms, and yet they have already had a good amount of exposure, with reasonable rotation on local radio as well as performances at a number of popular festivals (for which they are custom made for). Rumor has it they’ve been working on new tracks, so keep your ear to the ground for some more Tin Sparrow coming your way soon. In the meantime, be like me and get happy with From the Sun.

What's so good?

Expectations are difficult things. Boy and Bear’s lauded and awarded EP With Emperor Antarctica was my first ever review on Indie Shuffle. Needless to say, I love the Sydney five-piece.

When news hit that they were working on their first full-length album
, I was initially over the moon. Then, the hater in me hit — how could they live up to the great expectations I had of them? How could they follow up an EP which delivered them accolades such as Rolling Stone’s “Artist to Watch in 2010″ or Triple J Unearthed’s “Artist of the Year”? HOW?

Boy and Bear toured in June and I caught their show. After seeing them perform again, my worries quickly evaporated. All I needed to do then was to wait until the release of Moonfire and everything would be set right again. Since opening my mailbox last week to find a CD-shaped package grinning up at me, I have not let a day pass without listening to Moonfire at least once in its entirety. It’s good. Real good.

Deciding to record the album with producer Joe Chicarrelli – of Stokes and My Morning Jacket fame – the band set up base in the musical hotbed that is Nashville. Part of the reason for this relocation was to push themselves, mainly to avoid being pigeon-holed as “that type of band”.

Chicarelli’s expertise has clearly paid dividends. Aside from the folky twangs which linger from the EP, there is a much more mature and well-rounded side to this record. First single “Feeding Line” is a driving and powerful jaunt, but does not stray too much from their new folk beginnings. Recent release “Milk and Sticks” is an interesting transitional piece, changing pace and feel mid-track. “Part Time Believer” delves into a time passed, with a great bluesy vibe assisting the tale-telling.

Beautiful harmonies and acoustic touches drive this album, Boy and Bear have shown that they’re no flash in the pan. With an unquenched thirst to challenge themselves musically, Moonfire will no doubt set the anxieties of those expectant fans to rest.

Lollapalooza 2011: 10 Up-and-Coming Artists

We’re reporting live from Lollapalooza in Chicago! It’s always a good idea to hit Grant Park early, as Lollapalooza’s most memorable moments are often hidden in the early afternoon sets of up-and-coming artists.

We went digging through the line-up to find the most promising prospects for the festival that is known to launch music careers. After all, it was just in 2005 that The Arcade Fire had their break-out afternoon set, and in 2007, Lady Gaga was playing on a small stage.

So here are a few artists to catch this year, before they make the main stages in the years to come! Enjoy.

Song: Ruby Jane Smith - Valentine (Willie Nelson Cover) [Downloa d]

Ruby Jane Smith is an intriguing Lollapalooza prospect. At just sixteen years old, she’s like the musical version of Mattie Ross from the movie True Grit. This fiddlin’ phenomenon has plenty of experience, making music since she was just 2 years old; it’s rare to come across an artist so pure. The youngest fiddler to every play the Grande Ole Opry at age 10, Ruby was born in Dallas, grew up in Mississippi, and recently returned to Austin’s booming music scene. In 2009, she performed the Willie Nelson classic “Valentine” alongside the The Red Headed Stranger himself, who described his fellow Texan Ruby as “agreat picker, fiddler, songwriter, and singer with an amazing career in front of her.” No doubt, as bandleader of her very own The Ruby Jane Show, the country/jazz/bluegrass/blues ensemble, her mastery of the craft is evident. With a warm and sultry voice reminiscent of Norah Jones, Ruby is an impressively complete talent, and a must-see act.

This electronic rock group from New Zealand has skyrocketed to stardom with their breakout hit “Young Blood.” These Kiwis are similar to other up-and-coming bands like fellow Aucklanders Kids of 88, Foster the People, and The Vaccines. In an interview with UK publication DIY, lead singer Thom described the festival experience as “a bit like your fifteen minutes of fame — you’ve got to prove yourself in the little bit of time you have.” So, at least give them a chance to wow you.

I first came across Kids These Days last March in Austin during SXSW, and how couldn’t I? They stapled their poster up and down every street pole on 6th Street, played constant showcases, and hustled up and down the block. In the time since, they’ve absolutely blown up. Opening for none other than Snoop Dogg last week, they’ve been a recent favorite featured by both Jay-Z and Questlove. Pulling together diverse musical influences from the neighborhoods across their hometown Chicago, this blues-rock-jazz-fusion-funky-rap coup have carved out a genre truly all their own. As opposed to other genre-blending groups that simply concoct a slew of styles in an attempt create something thats simply different, it’s clear this seemingly rag tag team set out to craft something specific, and the quality shines through. Kids These Days are proof talent pays off with hard work. When I pulled up to their Lollapalooza pre-show at Lincoln Hall this past Wednesday, the first mailbox I saw was, of course, covered in their posters. Their live set was one of the most impressive I’ve taken in all year. Vic Mensa is a menace MC who must have lungs of steel to keep his blistering pace; natural musician Liam Cunningham is a perfect compliment and lead man in his own right, improvising luscious guitar solos over infectious beats. Lane Beckstrom wields a heavy bass, while Macie Stewart is a natural on the keys, and Greg Landfair Jr. was a fan favorite on the drums. When the horn section, Rajiv Halim, J.P. Floyd, and Nico Segal come in — it’s game over. Lollapalooza promises to be another break-out gig in what’s already been a big summer for The Kids from Chicago.

Like a more soulful Kings of Leon or a more country version of The Black Keys, J. Roddy Walston and The Business peaked my interest from the very first listen. Sloppily bombastic, this gospel rock outfit’s exciting live performance, an homage to 70s glam rock, is a perfect way to toss yourself back into the madness of Lolla’s second day.

Typhoon is the hottest band out of Portland right now, and that kind of tells you a lot about them right off the bat. Featuring a backing chorus of anywhere between 10 to 14 members, and meticuoulously laid orchestration, Typhoon sounds like the Northwest’s answer to Bon Iver. Intellectual and grandiose, yet laid-back and relaxed, Typhoon’s set promises to be a highlight of the festival.

Sunday at Playstation Stage, 12:15 PM In the past year Greta Morgan’s newest project has become an absolute favorite of mine. It’s gotten me through Chicago’s most recent unforgiving winter, because with Gold Motel “it’s always summer, the bags are always packed, and the car is always running.” The former lead singer of the Hush Sound, Greta escaped those evil Chicago winters for greener pastures in Los Angeles. Seeking inspiration, she found it in countless live shows. Bottling up the warm sound of Southern California, she headed back to Chicago to form Gold Motel. Whenever it got too cold, I would put their debut EP Summer House on, close my eyes, and picture myself basking in the sun at a warm summer festival, listening to their sweet tunes, now that fantasy becomes a reality. Here, you can sample their newest track off the rumored upcoming album, “Winter Shanty.”

Described as “a psychic time slip,” Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter collaborated with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon on the song “Daphne” on this year’s Grown Unknown. Featuring haunting, complex vocals, Ices hails from the same school of indie as the likes of Cat Power and Feist.

City and Colour is the stage name of singer-songwriter Dallas Green (who, despite his southern-themed name, hails from Ontario). Well established in Canada, he won the Juno award for best Alternatvie Album of the Year for Sometimes in 2007 (the same category Arcade Fire took for the Suburbs this year) and Songwriter of the year in 2009. With the albums’ critical success, Green may be Canada’s best kept secret.

“Buzz band,” “trendy name,” “hails from Detroit,” — these headlines worry me, but Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. is actually quite impressive for a start-up between two strangers. I was first impressed by Daniel Zott and Josh Epstein with their cover of the Beach Boys classic “God Only Knows.” In late 2009, Epstein caught fellow musician Zott’s live set; a phone call later and they decided to team up to compliment one another. They’re like indies version of Perfect Strangers — I’m pretty sure Zott’s Baki.

Reminiscent of of Rogue Wave Boy, the band manages to capture an acoustic flare that’s accessible and catchy. Boy & Bear is another band that’s banking off of a big SXSW win. Their relaxed style should make for a good set to wind down to.

Splendour in the Grass 2011: Top 10 Australian Acts

Building on my earlier post about the top ten international bands to check out at the upcoming Splendour in the Grass Festival (July 29-31), I now bring you the best of this year’s homegrown contingent.

Here are the top ten Australian acts that we’re excited to see at the festival. Of course, Splendour in the Grass is held in Australia (and I’m a native Australian as well), so I’m kind of biased. But I hope this brings your attention to some of the great acts coming out of this country.

Song: Cloud Control - This is what I said [Downloa d]

Winners of the Australian Music Price in 2011, this is a truly radiant band. Cloud Control played at last year’s festival and were invited back for a second helping.

Song: Alpine - Too Safe [Downloa d]

Cool electro pop is this group’s forte. I am desperately excited to catch their set, as I’ve always managed to miss their shows in Sydney.

Song: Guineafowl - Botanist [Downloa d]

What stands out most when watching Guineafowl perform live is how much they enjoy themselves on stage. I guarantee that one of their songs has been handpicked to be an anthem at this year’s festival.

Song: The Holidays - Golden Sky [Downloa d]

The energetic Sydney four-piece had a fantastic 2010, following the release of their much-lauded album, Post Paradise. More to follow this year, please!

Song: Tim and Jean - Come Around [Downloa d]

I assure you that watching Tim and Jean will be a major party. The young Western Australian duo’s endlessly catchy brand of electro pop is bound to please.

Song: PNAU - Wild Strawberries [Downloa d]

The enigmatic pair — a favorite of Elton John — are soon to release their sophomore album, Soft Universe. They are credited with my all-time favorite festival memory: when they blew the top off Sydney’s Homebake festival in 2008.

Song: The Middle East - Blood [Downloa d]

The Middle East are quite possibly the most talented band in Australia at the moment. They are one of those bands who amaze you with their ability, constantly switching instruments during their sets. Their perfectly crafted music is heaven sent.

Song: Cut Copy - Take Me Over [Downloa d]

Still going strong after the release of their third album, Zonoscope, Cut Copy’s live show is still as entertaining as ever (I’ve seen them live five times now). Bring on show number six!!

Song: Boy and Bear - Feedling Line [Downloa d]

After the success of their first EP, With Emperor Antartica, saying that the upcoming release of their debut full-length album is highly anticipated would be an enormous understatement. This band has accomplished so many things in their short history together, and I’m excited to see where they go next.

Song: Gotye - Somebody That I Used to Know [Downloa d]

Another artist with a new album ready to go, the brilliant Wally De Backer (AKA Gotye) is always a wonder to behold. Splendour will be a great chance for him to show off his new material prior to the album’s August release date.

What's so good?

Boy and Bear is a band going places, and going to those places quickly. From their inception in 2009 (they were originally four separate bands), the five Sydney-based collaborators have gone from strength to strength and were recently nominated for the prestigious Triple J Unearthed Breakthrough award — other recent nominees have included Megan Washington, the John Steel Singers, and Art vs Science.

Their EP With Emperor Antarctica is a very short and very sweet affair, with five beautifully crafted gifts of folk goodness. The EP’s shortness isn’t an issue because it’s guaranteed to be stuck on repeat for hours.

The debut single “Mexican Mavis” combines haunting harmonies (each of the five members can bust out a sweet tune!), driving choruses, beautiful acoustic guitar, and precise percussion, all in the space of roughly three minutes. All musically trained professionals, they’re a phenomenon to behold live, constantly switching between instruments.

Recently, Boy and Bear was chosen to appear on the Tim and Neil Finn tribute album He Will Have His Way, covering the universally-loved track “Fall at Your Feet.” They have also recently toured with Laura Marling and Mumford and Sons, and are now setting off on their own tour of the UK.
