So, there was period on the intertubez where the hullabaloo surrounding Daft Punk had reached such a deafening level that I lost all interest in hearing anything about the band. Seriously, Daft Punk fans are exhaustively intense (you got to love their passion, though). After awhile, I was a bit like Batman in this Daft Punk-themed meme. But, like Daughter’s music, their cover of  ”Get Lucky“ is the perfect salve for a reputation rubbed raw.

Daughter’s take is quintessentially them, with a controlled delivery leaving each bar lingering with baited breath. In that way, Daughter turns the track slightly ominous. It’s less an orgy of celebration and more the dark thoughts that come when convincing yourself to pursue a man who wears an enticing guise, but is clearly a dangerous walk down self-destruction lane.

In that way, it’s eerily similar to when The Bird and the Bee turned Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop the Music“ into a sensual affair for the ages. It’s quite the feat, but nothing less than the amazing tour de force we’ve come to expect from Daughter.

I’ve never really understood, or rather jumped on, the Lana Del Rey backlash bandwagon. It’s difficult for me to doubt her authenticity because she substantiates her presented persona in a way that’s irreplaceable; I don’t mean that we couldn’t go on without her music, but that I couldn’t imagine anyone else being her.

Maybe Tavi Gevinson understood the psychology of Del Rey best when she said, “[Lana] has many different qualities that women in our culture aren’t allowed to be, all at once, so people are trying to find the inauthentic one.” However, it’s the multiple personalities that makes her enigmatic persona attractive, and by default then, her voice, which seems as organic an extension as possible.

“Young & Beautiful” comes from The Great Gatsby soundtrack and dilutes her friction to its purest, most alluring form. “Will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful?” she haunts, “I know you will,” with the supporting drama of an imagined full electronic orchestra.

I know it’s been a little while since I’ve posted a soundtrack playlist, but during my hiatus my wife and I welcomed our beautiful daughter Madeline Grace into the world.  This led to me brainstorming a great movie soundtrack to honor her appearance into my life. Only one came to mind: Juno.

Juno is one of those movies that resonates with so many different types of people.  From one aspect, it’s the story of an eclectic uncompromising adolescent (played by Ellen Page) coming to terms with who she is while dealing with an unplanned pregnancy.  On the other hand, it follows married couple Mark and Vanessa (Played by Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner) coming to terms with not being able to have children as they look to adopt a baby and all the stresses that can accompany the process.

It’s like two different worlds colliding, as Juno’s life intersects with Mark and Vanessa’s, as shown in the varying musical taste of Juno (who’s into 70s punk) and Mark (who’s a product of 90s indie rock). Thankfully, this led to some great music being featured in the film, like Sonic Youth’s cover of the Carpenter’s classic “Superstar,” and two great Belle & Sebastian tracks.

The true standouts from the soundtrack were some of the beautiful acoustic tracks, filled with the quirkiness of the Moldy Peaches cover of “Anyone Else but You,” done by Ellen Page and Michael Cera or the heart-wrenching Cat Powers track “Sea of Love.”  These tracks served as the perfect backdrop to the storyline.

Ultimately, Juno is a movie all about love and doing what’s right no matter how hard it is. A quality that I hope my daughter will develop as she gets older.

I swirl the wine in my glass like a nerve tonic, bathwater rippling as the candles light my stoic face. The only sounds that pierce my silence are the howling of snow hitting the window and the sound of this track to punctuate the night.

Afterwards, I crawl to my pitch-black room and lay prostate on my bed, thanking the gods no one is sleeping over, save this Sleep ∞ Over track. Sound depressing? To an introvert, that’s the most romantic night possible. After a day of extroverts exhausting me, sometimes “I don’t know why it feels like I have to sometimes get away; but [don't worry world] you know, I love you.”  I “just need to walk endlessly hand in hand with myself, somewhere on my own.” 

This cover of 1970s-era hippy-folk singer Vashti Bunyan is the best self-love song I’ve ever seen. It’s like Jon Brion soundtracked a David Lynch movie. Romantic strings swell and, for once, they aren’t about anyone else but yourself.  Disappear at will, fellow introverts! I know you’ll be back to this site to gush your love once you’ve recharged.

Give the insanely talented Sleep ∞ Over some love on their SoundCloud and buy their Rooftop 7″, out on Hippos in Tanks. Also, if you don’t read Gorilla vs. Bear, you should, as they one of my favorite blogs (other than IS, of course) that turned me onto this wonderful track.

Mia Moretti has provided the essential beats for fashionistas from LA to Vienna for quite some time now. So when she teamed up with violinist and vocalist Caitlin Moe to form The Dolls, there was little doubt she’d upped the ante. Indeed, they’ve now performed at such high-profile events as Chelsea Clinton’s wedding and Chopard’s 150th anniversary party.

Following up their first original production “So Beautiful,” we’ve got our hands on this remix of Cat Power‘s “Ruin.” With it, The Dolls have taken Cat Power’s already deep and empowering song and added some thumping beats and light string accompaniment to create the perfect mix between classical and Balearic music.

It’s catchy, it’s poppy, and the song’s subtle jangly drop provides a nice progression over the bed of strings. We’re pretty sure the combination will keep your feet tapping all day.

If you’re in the mood for some stripped-down folk with milky female vocals, then you’ve come to the right post. Megan Wyler is gaining traction leading up to her album release this year with the release of her single, “Through The Noise.”

This simplified folk song is still incredibly moving and luscious. Each instrument is delicately calculated to hold its own, never getting lost in the mix. I think the main focus here is the vocals; whether Megan is with or without harmonies, the melody is simple but infectious. Who knew that a stripped down folk song would still carry so much weight? That’s how you know it’s a cut above the rest.

Keep an eye out for Megan Wyler’s newest album, set to release sometime this year.

Your ears always perk up when you hear an enchanting voice along with beautiful piano playing. And it’s even better when the artist takes inspiration from a great like Sylvia Plath. So it’s no surprise that I’m really into Lady Lazarus, an artist who delivers minimalist tracks in the realm of dream pop and experimental folk. She’ll remind you of Joanna Newsom or Cat Power, but making the comparison is a bit unjust in light of her exceptional talent.

Lady Lazarus is Melissa Ann Sweat, a singer-songwriter, artist, poet – apparently jack of all creative trades – hailing from Los Angeles. Her songs are all really calming; the bewitching tone of her voice accompanies keys all too well. It’s impressive that she only started teaching herself keyboard back in 2008.

This track comes off Melissa’s newest album, All My Love In Half Light, due out on January 29, 2012. It’s a moody accordion sounding piece with simple but dramatic lyrics. This speaks to the sound of her entire album: straightforward yet evocative music from a beautiful soul. Favorites are “Wonder Inc.,” “Edge,” and “Do Not Go Gentle” – heavy piano tracks.

Melissa released a 7” on Inner City Cruiser this summer as a part of the Graveface Charity Release Series, which included indie greats like Mount Eerie and Xiu Xiu. She was in good company then, and with tracks like this, you can bet she’ll continue to be in good company in the future. California’s In The Valley Below has created an eerily somber track called “Hymnal” that may very well leave you with goosebumps.

The tale of what could have been with a love once lost is something I think most of us can relate to, and In the Valley Below expresses that feeling in an appropriately melancholy way. The memories that once were are continuously blurring, and it’s easy to hear that longing within this song. More than just a throwaway cut from that exquisite album, The Idler Wheel (and really I’m just going to keep praising that album as it’s my favorite for the year), “Dull Tool” finds Fiona in fine form.

Continuing the theme from her current LP, Fiona’s on a mission to feel everything, but her current love interest has “forgotten the difference between equanimity and passivity.” Afraid to rock the boat, he doesn’t “fuck when [he] fucks” or “kiss when [he] kisses” — he’s just a dead fish in the sack and in the relationship. But we all know flopping sea life isn’t left in Apple’s world to linger until it makes one’s entire life smell foul, instead it is blown out to sea in the tidal wave that is Fiona’s wordsmithing.

Her voice growls over circus like arrangements that recall the heady days of her Jon Brion-produced studio recordings. The lyrics are laced with just enough of Apple’s acrid barbs to completely destroy the man in question.  Like a dull tool against the body, they hatchet a man to pieces in an unseemly manner. It’s, you know, a perfect Apple track.

Last week, the soundtrack for the new Tim Burton flick Frankenweenie was released.   The movie is based upon a short that Burton made for Disney way back in 1984, brought back to life using the stop-motion animation made famous by The Nightmare Before Christmas.  Paying homage to classic horror movies like Frankenstein and Pet Semetary, Frankenweenie is about a boy who brings his dead dog back to life using the wonders of science.

As if Tim Burton making a new animated movie wasn’t enough of a draw, the soundtrack features some of indie music’s heavy hitters, like Passion Pit, Kimbra, Grouplove, and even Robert Smith.

One of the lead tracks off the soundtrack is a nice acoustic track from Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.  She returns to some folky, indie pop akin to her work on the Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack.  The track features a tropical groove and gets a bit quirky with some dog barks and creepy vibraphone.  Despite the quirkiness, it is definitely worth checking out.  Also check out the movie when it drops on October 5.

Hugely successful locally and abroad, Sarah Blasko is an Australian musical icon. Three years have passed since the release of Blasko’s third album – the critically acclaimed As Day Follows Night – but now she’s back, and with spectacular results too. Having spent time writing and recording in Stockholm and Bulgaria, the first track from her upcoming self-produced album (I Awake – due out October 26) has just been released.

The album’s title track, “I Awake” is a typically soaring and stirring affair, but it’s unpredictable in the way it changes course. Commencing with a surging drum beat, the percussion subsides, and keys, strings and Blasko’s beautiful husky vocals take over. Perfectly positioned between jazz, pop and classical genres, it showcases Blasko’s work with the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra.

This is an eye-opening look at what to expect on I Awake. Once again, Sarah Blasko is ready to blow us all away.

Canberra-based folk singer/songwriter Julia Johnson has been collaborating with her seven piece band, the Deep Sea Sirens, since 2005. Seasoned performers, they’ve become known for their intimate and dynamic shows. After a break of five years since their first album debuted, they’ve recently released their second, “Family Pets.”

The album’s first single, “Little Surprises,” was exactly that when I first stumbled across it. A stirring track, it’s full of ebs and flows, with Johnson’s evocative vocals assisted ably by the band’s well-designed musical arrangements. Vintage recording gear was intentionally used to give the music an authentic feel, and this sentiment really comes to the fore on the single.

In summary, this is a great song and you should listen to it – I’ve run out of adjectives for “beautiful.”

It has become standard knowledge that I have a fanatic adoration for anything Thom Yorke touches. Be it Radiohead, his Atoms For Peace side project, or another solo endeavor, I’m there with open ears, ready to dance interpretively to whatever otherworldly tunes he brings to the table.

Recently I uncovered a hidden gem titled “This Mess We’re In,” featuring soulful songstress PJ Harvey and the legendary Thom Yorke. What seems like a duet made in indie heaven is just that and so much more. Here we have two Brits that compliment each other marvelously. Polly holds down the bass parts of the vocals while Thom takes care of the falsettos in his usual ghostlike demeanor, creating a story that is completely au fait; a song that captures the essence of love and hopelessness all wrapped up into four lucid minutes.

Altogether, “This Mess We’re In” is the perfect amalgamate into the enigmatically beautiful world that Yorke and company repeatedly creates for their audiences. Enjoy.

It’s been a while since we’ve featured any singles off Cat Power’s upcoming album Sun. In fact, “Cherokee” was the most-recent example. So, I suppose this remix is a gentle reminder that we’re still waiting for Sun to drop (end of August, folks!).

Switching gears, it’s fairly non-contentious to assert that Nicolas Jaar has made a name for himself as one of the premiere minimal electronic producers out there. And so, there were relatively few surprises when I first gave this a listen.

That said, it’s rare to hear a Jaar track that includes vocals, particularly as powerful as Chan Marshall’s. Fortunately, even with the catchy percussion of the original, these two go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Something about the name Dum Dum Girls is catchy. So catchy in fact, that I could have sworn I’d heard of them before, though you’d be hard pressed to get me to remember song.

At least now, with the release of their first single “Lord Knows,” I’ll have a better baseline to associate with the name. The song
is a pretty standard indie rock lick, reminiscent of the much-more-famous Best Coast.

“Lord Knows” will appear on the band’s upcoming EP End Of Daze, available September 25th via Sup Pop.

I tend to pull out Wye Oak’s 2011 release Civilian for all sorts of listening occasions, so to see a new single coming from the Baltimore-based duo got me pretty excited.

Somewhat surprisingly, “Spiral” comes off an Adult Swim compilation, the third release in a series of singles that have so far included Unknown Mortal Orchestra and The Hives.

The song is a little uncharacteristic relative to the band’s last release, steering clear of the general sad theme of Civilian. What’s left is a futuristic song, full of reverb and quite easy to enjoy.

The fourth season of Entourage definitely wasn’t its strongest. From unnecessarily convoluted storylines featuring a fictional Pablo Escobar biopic to Ari’s struggles to get his son into an exclusive private school, the show seemed to have jumped the shark a little bit. But on the bright side, there was plenty of Billy Walsh, which is never a bad thing.

The Entourage Season 4 soundtrack was still strong as ever, featuring its signature blend of hip-hop and rock.

Cat Power has released a free download of a new single titled “Ruin,” slated to appear on a new album titled Sun, available via Matador on September 4th.

This will be the first album we’ve heard from Chan Marshall since 2008′s highly successful Jukebox.

Initial thoughts? “Ruin” is a wonderfully textured song with a pretty interesting chord progression. It’s not exactly the type of music that I’m going to rush home to dance around to, but I’m fairly certain this will find a very happy niche.

In 2006, completely unbeknownst to me, Feist released Open Season, an album containing 15 alternative remixes and rarities from 2004’s heavily acclaimed Let It Die, including collaborations with Peaches, The Postal Service, Kings of Convenience and many others.

Originally performed by Peaches on her eccentric sophomore album The Teaches of Peaches, this track is one that clearly stands out. Titled “Lovertits,” Feist teams up with Gonzales and reworks the song to fulfillment with sultry vocals, inflections of electronics and softened naughtiness.

Give it a listen and explore the possibilities in Feist’s spicy eroticisms.
