I’ve been reminiscing over a few brilliant tracks we’ve featured on Indie Shuffle after Daft Punk decided to dismiss the current state of electronic. As a music hunter, I witness a constant evolution. There are artists who imitate the trademarks of another (a part of the learning curve), but there are always those striving to create a unique identity.

To me, Cashmere Cat’s “Mirror Maru“ sounds more defiant then Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” I know it’s irrelevant to compare the two, and therefore unnecessary for the latter to assume the throne. I’d listen to many artists “for pleasure” over Daft Punk or Skrillex. That’s not to disrespect their pivotal role in the electronic genre (I was the one, after all, who shared this amazing cover of “Something About Us“); it’s more to point out that their music is not for everyone, and music should be for everyone. Even if they were referencing mainstream EDM, they could inspire through sound alone and draw ears to lesser known gems (from the present), rather then inflate the attention they’re predisposed to receiving.

With that said, I’m sharing the first track ever posted by Cashmere Cat — his remix of Chad Valley’s “Shell Suite.” After hearing it and his latest remix “Do You…,” I think it’s safe to say he’s one to watch. Leave it to Beat Connection to echo my life at the moment. Each spring for the past three years, I’ve discovered a new Beat Connection track that I’ve fallen in love with — one that ended up being more a life mantra than just a catchy tune. In 2011, it was “In the Water,” when I was drowning in the dog days; in 2012 it was ”Think/Feel,” when I was giving myself demerits for every moment I was closed off to; and this year, it’s “Saola,” a track about turning a joyful eye towards your grim determination to succeed.

On”Saola,” hits it right away with a 1-2 punch, bringing the lyrical opening salve, “Well, well, I guess that’s life… you can’t pick up the pieces that you don’t like,” straight to the heart with quintessential gusto. Beat Connection have always had a knack for distilling their message into some amazing couplets and allowing the production to carry it like a muggy mist wafting into your ears. “Saola” perfects that method brilliantly.

The Odesza remix is definitely my favorite version of the track, as he gives it that extra kick in its step with some splicing and tropical beats to move it toward greatness. You can catch both these artists on tour together, and like them on their individual Facebook pages (Beat Connection) and (Odesza) to hear more.

Spring is the best. Winter gets called out for being an archaic bastard and April rains right him out of our lives. Oh, yeah, and all the hipster musicians we love take off their Holden Caulfield-esque hat that muffled their music in cynicism and release truly life-awing tracks.

Case in point: Young Galaxy‘s new track “New Summer,” which teases at the prospect of new life before throwing all pretense aside in favor of some unabashed, fawning decadence. Soaring strings copulate with Catherine McCandless’ vocals to produce a chorus that will be the summer soundtrack baby of many a drive down Pacific Coast Highway with the top down.

And that chorus features one of my favorite synth sections yet this year. Its flirtatious bantering gives way to a simultaneous need for reflection and a desire skinny-dip and “howl at the moon.” Enjoy!

Work Drugs’s duo Tom Crystal and Ben Louisiana last appeared on Indie Shuffle with “Young Lungs“ back in December 2012. Now, they are about to set on short Midwest tour (check dates here) and to celebrate, they released a new track.

“Sunset on High Street” is a indie pop song with great keyboard work and nice saxophone play to create a smooth finish. This song is their first single off an untitled album due out sometime this summer.

According to the band, “The song was written about a homeless man named Milton Angland that we met on our last trip to Los Angeles. It happens once in a blue moon, but the Aussies and the Brits have put aside their differences to come together for a rare union: Snakadaktal’s music. With the help of London-based Young & Lost Club, the Melbourne-based quintet will be dropping a split release of “Air” and “Dance Bear” on February 25th.

While both songs are already available and floating around the internet (due to a very successful local release), this Chad Valley remix is 100% fresh. And yes, Chad happens to be a Brit as well.

Taking the catchy tune of the original, Chad has transformed the track into a tropical, chilled out indie rock remix that’s certainly appropriate for a summer season. Which seems weird, given that it’s mid-winter in the UK. Perhaps he embodies what I can only assume is a common desire: to have a little bit more summer in all of our lives.

Poolside’s daytime disco has been on repeat on my iPod lately. I really dig the debut album Pacific Standard Time. 

The duo (Filip Nikolic and Jeffrey Paradise) also have a knack with covering songs, too. Last year we heard them cover Neil Young’s “Haverest Moon.” This time they’re at it again with Spike’s “Magic Table.” Poolside’s cover makes this 1983 song sound current and hip. It definitely fits in with their daytime disco theme.

Mastermind Patrick Grossi of Active Child has the voice of a straight up angel. His songs have been sung and remixed by many artists with notable live performances and stellar recordings to date. While some artists are hesitant to strip down their recordings to simple instrumentals and heavy vocals, Grossi takes the initiative and delivers something quite spectacular to his audiences.

Originally performed in 1905 as a gospel hymn, “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” is taken to different lengths with his high-pitched vibrato and incomparable vocal range. It’s not dressed up with heavy electronics like some of his former work, but that’s what adds to the beauty of this track; you get the rawness that you desire all captured in under four minutes. Even if you’re not the spiritual type, you’re going to love this song.

Digits‘ new track, “Love is Only Affection,” has an intimacy which, at shallow glance, feels prosaic, hearkening back to the sonic landscapes of 80′s odes to heartbreak. But as soon as the lyrics kick in, you’ll quickly tell the track is revolutionary.

In the first stanza, Digits captures the emotionally wrongheaded approach of most love songs when he opines, “You’re always so caught up inside of love/That you lose yourself inside it/Even when you think you’re in control/You can never step outside it.”  And by doing so,  he is able to set himself outside the confines of a love song by straddling the dichotomy of his logical lyrics and the effuse electro-pop of Reagan-Era romances.  In many ways, he’s the anti-Chad Valley.

But while Digits’ minimalist approach to electro art-pop allows him to play the outsider to what he imagines (and I would as well) as a world full of lovers injecting Shakespeare’s Puck’s blood directly into their veins — bouncing around on each other like out of control fools — his track is anything but unromantic. In his sombre exploration as “Love [As] Only Affection,” he finds that there is no alterative to the love game; and while “that doesn’t mean there is nothing greater,” by the time you spend time in Digits’ outsidery world, you’ll be able to look at love in a whole new manner.

It’s a love song for grown-ups, one which I could only hope would spawn a music revolution…

It’s original, alright. I haven’t heard something quite like The New Division for a very long time – I honestly can’t narrow them down to one genre. The L.A. four piece have just released their latest EP Night Escape, a canvas for dreamy pop. They released their debut album Shadows about a year ago and now, it surely seems that they are gearing up for a second full-length.

“Pride” stays true to their brooding chillwave style. If MGMT were a little bit older and a little bit wiser, this is exactly how I would picture them to sound. The powerful anthemic synths that are constantly on loop coupled with the many blissful dreamy moments works too perfection, there’s nothing quite like it!

The tracks from Chad Valley’s debut LP, Young Hunger, certainly live up to the album’s name; so effuse are they with that feeling of earnest, young love, that the towering Balearic and synth beats can feel like a John Hughes movie marathon was injected directly into your veins. While Chad Valley’s production skills keep the songs from becoming too moonstruck, if that level of insta-romance freaks you out — as it does for me — then Man Without Country’s remix is here to save the day.

Okay, last week I posted a MS MR’s track titled “Bones,” which simply put blew me away. The New York duo have released several songs, including “Bones,” from their upcoming EP Candy Bar Creep Show on their interesting Tubmlr account. You can actually download the stems to their songs off the Tumblr page to create your own remix of their songs — which Twin Shadow has done here. Pretty cool, eh?

MS MR’s Tumblr page is filled with pictures of the iconic Slash, 90′s films, and what some might call disturbing photos of mutilated bodies and emo, I deem brilliant and a refreshing perspective on life. When I tumble through their Tumbler blog it is blatantly obvious where the duo breeds their inspiration.

Remember when I said MS MR’s female vocalist was a privilege to listen to? Well, I was wrong she is a gift. Her vocals and writing abilities are a beautiful combination. However, in the “Hurricane” remix it is the male vocalist who steals the proverbial show, which concludes with an entertaining guitar riff and both vocalists singing in unison.

It was only several weeks ago that MS MR was beginning to gain recognition from the blogosphere and after this Twin Shadow remix, I am positive this NYC duo and their Tumblr will be making reoccurring headlines.

Spoiler alert: this blogger is not that cool. I like magic, sci-fi, and especially anything with mythical creatures. I used to steal fantasy books from my father as a child and hide under my bed for a personal read-a-thon. “Why the personal revelation?” I’m sure you’re asking. Pat Grossi’s (aka Active Child) new release You Are All I See has besotted my nerdy heart strings, sounding like a choir of fairy dust floating onto a acid-enhanced knoll of magical passion.

Threads of comforting chillwave can be found throughout the album, but Active Child sprinkles a cacophony of intense melodies and lyrics with just the right placement to give the album it’s own multi-faceted, recognizable identity.

Title track “You Are All I See” opens up the exposed wound of an LP, harps playfully frolicking about with Grossi’s impassioned vocals pairing with perfectly balanced harmonies.

The second track, “Hanging On,” is incredible and a personal fave. A melody reminiscent of Four Tet’s “Circling” spirals under poetic genius (“Touch me and then turn away/Put your hands into the flame/Tell me if you feel this pain/’Cause I don’t want to be a ball and chain”). How To Dress Well’s lo-fi R&B sound collaborates with Active Child on “Playing House” as a seriously appreciated bonus to an already memorable experience.

You Are All I See is parallel to a most exquisite soufflé — delicate, delicious, precisely manipulated. You know if Grossi had changed but one action, one ingredient, that it would have fallen. As is, the LP a symphonic masterpiece, always to be imitated but never exactly replicated. The 10 track LP will be released August 23 on Vagrant Records, but you can get a free download of “Hanging On” here, amongst others.

Active Child is currently on tour throughout the states until the end of September, with Chad Valley and Com Truise depending on location. For dates and locations plus more Active Child, check out his official site here.

Oxford is a city that’s currently making up the majority of the UK’s government, and now it seems intent on extending its monopoly into the indie music scene.

In “Now That I’m Real,” indie poster boys Trophy Wife get hands-on with chillwave star Chad Valley — I would have expected the remixing duties to have worked the other way round, but this sounds pretty good.

This remix sounds like what you’d expect from a cross between the two artists — the tropical sounds of Chad Valley merging with the minimalist disco style of Trophy Wife.

Let’s put it this way… if The xx started wearing tie-dye t-shirts, we’d expect them to start making something a little like this!
