What's so good?

It’s been almost a year since Donald released his free mixtape Royalty, and two months since he produced Kilo Kish’s tracks. We’ve missed him. So, you can imagine how stoked we are to hear a new track like this — and, best of all, it’s a return to his Culdesac days, with tight world play and impressive flow. I’m loving his typical introspective lyrics; it’s always nice to hear a star share the mundane feelings of the everyday, especially when it’s over a sweet soul-style sample off Funk Master Flex’s tape, produced by Chemist.

Yeah, you read that right. Funk-fucking-Master Flex.

This track is on the DJ’s newest release, Who You Mad At? Me Or Yourself?. The legendary mixtape master dropped tracks that’ll remind you of the good ‘ole days – an homage to his 90s compilation series. The epic track list features big names like Cam’ron, Lil Wayne, J. Cole, Fabolous, A$AP Rocky, among others. Seriously, the list goes on and on: it has almost 50 tracks. Damn.

This is a great album from FMF, with an amazing contribution by Childish. Check out the entire mixtape through his app. Didn’t have those back in the 90s…

We sincerely hope it won’t be another year until we see more pure Childish tracks. Stay on top of Donald news on the fan website forever Childish.

New York Emcee Skizzy Mars has been known for his love of indie rock, getting his start rapping over tracks by artists like Beirut and Crystal Castles — much like his contemporary, Childish Gambino. Thankfully, the worlds of hip-hop and indie rock continue to cross over with Mars’ new track “Phases” — a collaborative effort put together with Dallas indie singer-songwriter up and comer Conner Youngblood.

Off of Skizzy Mars’ mixtape debut of the same-name, “Phases” starts off with some toy piano and Youngblood’s questioning chorus. As the beat drops, Mars goes on talking about mistakes his made in his life, reflecting on all his been through, and how it’s matured him. Youngblood’s signature banjo also makes an appearance towards the very end, fitting in perfectly with hip-hop and piano infused beat.

While New York and Dallas are pretty far off geographically and culturally, Skizzy Mars and Conner Youngblood show how exciting life is when two different worlds meet. Go get Skizzy Mars’ new mixtape right here, and let him expand your world.

What's so good?

The summer is months away for us in the Northern hemisphere, but rapper and producer Sha Summer’s “Lyrical Therapy Pt. 2″ (produced by Chemist) offers the warm, melodic vibes of the summery season in the middle of the winter. This tracks is both soothing and capable of remedying any frigid and uneventful winter day on its own sonic standing. Also: do you hear a hint of Telepopmusik’s “Breathe” in there?

I digress. Summers is gearing up to release his fourth EP, titled Flying Saucers Meet Flying Lotus. In the midst of writing and producing, Sha manages to maintain and be the frontrunner of his clothing line, SpaceGoon, which was inspired by his family of talented artists. After listening, screen a clip featuring “Zodiac Shit” (produced by Flying Lotus) from his upcoming EP if you feel so inclined.

What's so good?

Mmm. Adele samples get me all hot and bothered. This track features that sweet little chorus from “Melt My Heart to Stone,” which Childish Gambino featured in “Do Ya Like.” It oddly reminds me of that track, which is good, but it doesn’t sound anything like it. It’s slowed down, repetitive, and more hollowed out on drum and bass. There are also some sweet little drum kicks in the background along with surreal vocals. Overall, a killer track.

I haven’t been able to find out much about the artist, W.B. Allen, aka Oppaa. Sparse SoundCloud, and a single free download on his Bandcamp. If you’re the artist, feel free to get in touch. We’re keen to see what’s next.

Adele recently created a stir by providing the lead single to the upcoming James Bond movie Skyfall. And, as I’m sure will come as a surprise to virtually no one, artists have already been looking for ways to cut, chop and remix her tunes.

Urban Noize are the first to grab our attention, layering Jay-Z’s “Threat” over an instrumental version of “Skyfall.” The net result is thoroughly mainstream (as far as participants can be considered), but I figured it’d be worth flagging for your listening pleasure.

In case you’re wondering how fresh this track by Hoodie Allen is, take note of the lyrics referring to Prince Harry partying it up. Basically…this can’t have been recorded more than a week ago.

Hoodie brought in producer RJF to lay down the vibe on “Feel The Love,” and the result is pretty legit. It clearly digresses a bit from the normal indie-rock hip-hop vibes that Hoodie has forged the way with…but evolution is a good thing, yeah?

Hoodie Allen has clearly established himself as one of the most successful independent artists this year. While not necessarily drumming up Mac Miller-esque support, the manner in which manages to engage his fanbase is truly remarkable.

Part of the secret sauce? Constantly keeping them entertained. Today, for example, he’s releasing a new single titled “Hey Now.” It definitely has a bit more EDM influence than prior tracks – an effect that actually works pretty well with his hip-hop style.

Apparently this is only a radio rip, but this version of Childish Gambino’s “Shoulda Known” pretty much sounds like the real thing.

To be honest, I’d actually skipped it when it first leaked, given that the majority of radio rips these days plaster their brand at a rate that’s mostly intolerable.

But, pretty glad that I gave it a proper listen! “Shoulda Known” is one of the poppier songs I’ve heard coming out of Donald Glover’s camp, but there’s still the same draw that had me listening to his music in the first place.

Cartoon Network Soundtrack: The Regular Show Ft. Tyler the Creator, Childish Gambino + More

If you haven’t watched any Cartoon Network outside of Adult Swim lately, I would highly suggest you check out The Regular Show.

While Cartoon Network has definitely had its fair share of high quality cartoonage, none has truly incorporated music like the crazy creation of JG Quintel, featuring a blue jay named Mordecai and a racoon named Rigby.

The Regular Show is filled with musical misadventure with an homage to Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, where future versions of main characters Mordecai and Rigby come back to the past to teach themselves how to rock before their first gig, and an episode where the characters battle the dreaded catchy song they used to like when they were in Junior High.

And just when you thought the show was just for kids, Tyler the Creator and Childish Gambino made a guest appearance in an episode featuring a rap battle and Shakespearean costumes. A must see. Check out the episode here.

There has also been music created by the developers of the show, like “The Hummus Rap,” as well as some great use of classic songs by the likes of 90s alternative rockers Filter and 70s southern rockers Mountain.

Johnny Astro caught a lot of people off guard earlier this month with “The SkyWalkers,” an alternative hip-hop track that featured a beautiful Coldplay sample and some seriously thoughtful verses. Well, it is with great joy that I bring you fine-ass Shufflers the exclusive premiere of Astro’s latest, “Skydreams.”

“Skydreams” has that good wordplay, reverb and bass that has come to define Astro’s sound. It also features some beautiful string work and a top-notch intro from The Notorious B.I.G. All in all, I am really feeling this tune. In a day and age overrun with bedroom emcees and producers, I stand behind Johnny Astro.

If you’re a fan, be sure to show some love. Also, get comfortable. This bandwagon may get pretty crowded.

Perhaps it’s a little ironic that I’m biting at the bit to post this new Childish Gambino track, “Fuck Your Blog.” But hey, if Childish wants to join Flynt Flossy and Yung Humma to rail on the internet, there really shouldn’t be any surprise that content producers want to gobble it up and regurgitate.

For me, Donald Glover has been hit-or-miss as of late. He’s nowhere near as washed-up as Kid Cudi, and I think that this track demonstrates his potential quite well: once you get past some of the absolutely stupid lyrics on his songs, you might wind up with a gem. Case and point: “Fuck Your Blog.”

Prior to blowing up in 2010 for his World Cup anthem “Waving Flag,” K’Naan was a relatively unknown Somali immigrant hip-hopper, known for his generally positive vibe and devotion to social justice issues. It wasn’t until “Waving Flag” and a couple other tracks from “Troubador” that he showed his true ability to rap AND sing, something very few rappers can do well.

In a little over a week he will release his first full-length album since “Troubador” and it seems this one (entitled “Country, God, or the Girl”) will further expand on his vocal strengths in addition to his rhymes. On “Waiting is a Drug,” the first single from the new album, his full spectrum of skills are certainly on display. You have the traditional philosophical themes, some fast verses, a cute chorus and even some (BONUS) whistling!

According to interviews, K’Naan will once again return to his Somali roots with the new album. One song is actually the story of how as a small child he picked up a grenade on the playground and accidentally detonated it in his classroom — how’s that for some perspective?

I for one am really looking forward to K’Naan continuing to use beautiful music as a vehicle for raising awareness about the issues plaguing his home continent. Country, God or the Girl drops on May 1 and features collabos with heavy hitters like Nelly Furtado, Nas, Bono and Keith Richards — be sure to check it out!

Widely known as Troy from the NBC hit show Community, Donald Glover is a real renaissance man when it comes to morphing himself to fit his many personas. Under his music moniker, Childish Gambino, Glover infinitely amuses us with his shrewd quips and pop-culture references — and with his latest album Camp still fresh in our iTunes libraries, it seems only necessary that I share a little hidden gem that was just released in early January.

This version of “Heartbeat” is not what you would expect in the slightest. As ArjanWrites.com described it:

“Ashworth took that sentiment and upped the dancefloor sensibilities of the song with a pulsing new electro groove, sparkly sounds effects and Balearic-styled, euphoric synth chords that are pretty darn epic.”

The crunch in Gambino’s angry lyrics still packs a punch even though it’s unexpectedly paired with a progressive house sound.

Ashworth’s remix is included on a remix package of Childish Gambino’s “Heartbeat” that is available on iTunes, and also includes remakes by Oliver, Treasure Fingers, Michael Brun, Tommie Sunshine, Little Dragon, Religion and Peter Wade.

Bam! Out of nowhere, Donald Glover unleashed a new song by title “Eat Your Vegetables.” There was no fanfare involved, just a straight-up link on his website.

By all accounts this track is a new one, as it includes references to Trayvon Martin. Perhaps recorded over the weekend? Doesn’t matter. It’s a strong reflection of the artist’s improving hip-hop skills, so I’m cool with not having much info.

Woot! New single from Hoodie Allen off his upcoming EP All American. “No Interruption” is one of the cleanest tracks I’ve heard from the artist to date, and the accompanying music video (below, directed by Charles Allen Whitcher) is really well pulled together.

Particularly notable with this release is that, according to Hoodie, it is 100% original (no samples at all). Could have fooled me…this backing track is really quality.

What's so good?

Manhattan’s own Skizzy Mars is at it again. The New York emcee just dropped his newest track, “Sirens,” and boy is it a good one.

Always one to do his own thing, Skizzy comes out of left field with a remake of one of the first tracks he ever recorded. “Sirens” is packed with good word play and solid production. There’s even some gospel choir thrown in for good measure.

With influences like The Killers and Beirut, as well as Kanye West and Frank Ocean, Skizzy Mars is an artist worth following. He calls his sound “alternative rap.” Labels aside, his style of hip hop is a nice alternative to most of what the blogs put out these days. He’s got heart, something to say, and productions that appeal to a wide audience. It’s a killer combination. As he raps in the song, “I’m on the cusp of greatness // It’s gonna take some time, some work and a lot of luck.”

Maybe not as much luck as he thinks.

With less than a month away from his album release titled Camp (via Glassnote Records), Donald Glover’s hip-hop alter ego, Childish Gambino, is stepping up his game and illuminating swagger all over the interwebs. The young MC’s not playing coy with his quick-witted temperaments, allowing him to get personal with his audience while amusing the masses.

Even though we’re accustomed to seeing and hearing Gambino in full Community character, on Camp he strips down to the bare essentials allowing his audience to become familiar with his regular guy approach, scoring fans left and right.

His latest release, titled “All the Shine,” is a tad more low energy than his previous single, “Bonfire,” with slowed down beats, soulful vocals, and solid lyrics equipped with enough profanity and vulgarity to make his predecessors take a step back in awe. The whole persona of Childish Gambino lies within his dope oeuvres paired with his social commentaries and comedic wordplays. His raps are so diverse that you can tell that he’s in between worlds.

He’s an established geek making the same music as gangsters. His tracks add enough intrigue and versatility to make us question what is real and what is for pure entertainment value. With lyrics like “Why does everyone have a problem with talking stupid shit? Or is it real shit? Cause sometimes that stupid shit is real shit,” it’s hard to question his intentions on whether or not he’s being real, but honestly, who cares? His passion is obvious and his intentions are out in the open for haters to hate on or for fans to vibe on. Check out Camp when it drops November 15!

What's so good?

Okay, so many of you might have seen that Childish Gambino just leaked a new track off his upcoming album. In case you missed it, you can catch it over at Pretty Much Amazing. But before you go over there, I must warn you: you’re probably wasting your time. I think the song sucks, and I think you’ll be disappointed.

Why? Well besides the terrible sound quality of the reggae style (Matisyahu anyone?), my problem with Childish is that every single song I hear appears to have the same smart-ass lyrics. First: “why does everyone always question my rapping?” Then a couple pop references, and finally he delves straight into “fucking them small Asian girls” (actual lyrics may vary). Really? Gimme a break.

So why am I posting a Childish track as SOTD? Two reasons: it features Chiddy Bang, famous for their indie-rock hip-hop melting skills. Secondly, he sounds hella sick on mashup tracks (the ultimate case and point: this Adele mashup). Call it a double standard if you will.

What's so good?

Woohoo! Brand new single from Hoodie Allen, “The Chase Is On” (+ a video as well). The song features sampling from Walter Meego’s “Girls,” which is wholly appropriate as the subject of the song deals with, well, attraction to females. Speaking of which, the accompanying video features Sofia Black D’Elia (of MTV’s Skins). I’m pretty sure she’s not yet 21, so it kinda makes sense that the party gets busted up at the end of the vid.

The single signals the release of his upcoming mixtape Leap Year, set to be released in about five days. He’s also going to be kicking off a nationwide headlining tour starting at the end of July.

What's so good?

First: Mike Posner. Then: Edwin van Cleef. Now: Jamie xx.

I know this song has been remixed and covered to death, but I can’t help but feeling that every version of “Rolling in the Deep” is a winner. Actually… it’s a bit frightening to hear the lyrics “You’re gonna wish you/never had me” since at times I feel like Adele’s trying to warn me that I’m going to become addicted to her song (and its subsequent remixes).

But I think of all the remixes, this one takes the cake. I mean, it has Childish Gambino for goodness sake. Haven’t you read my reviews? Might as well skip to 2:44 in the song, because that’s where the real fun begins.

Jamie xx recently put out this new remix, and it’s an awesome take on the original song. While he might not sound like he exactly belongs at first (not going to lie, starting a song by saying “swag” really just makes me laugh), Childish’s surprise feature is breathtaking. He delivers a simple yet biting two-minute rap that destroys some stupid ex-girlfriend (who in their right mind would leave Donald Glover?) while simultaneously dropping five pop culture, Internet-related memes at the same time (of course it’s funny).

Listen to this: “You ran back to them grody-ass indie dudes … A Micheal Cera knockoff? I guess I wasn’t white enough.” Reminds me of the song version of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

So study the lyrics on the “Childish Gambino Lyrics” tumblr (yes there’s a Childish Gambino fan page dedicated to linking up all of his lyrics), and be sure to check out the rest of Jamie xx’s fantastic remixes (including but not limited to: Florence + The Machine, Glasser, and Jack Penate) on his MySpace. What's so good?

It’s mixtapes like House of Balloons that makes me wish we were still living in the golden era of 90s R&B music. Drake wasn’t kidding around when he recently retweeted The Weeknd’s new album to his 2 million+ followers: it’s not often that you find something this fresh. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it becomes the next YouTube phenomenon and goes mainstream. In fact, it’s rumored he’s already working on a full-length with Drake – a tribute to his well-deserved hype.

Toronto-based singer Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd, blends hipster culture with sensual yet sad R&B frighteningly reminisicnet of Usher circa 1997. Every song on this mixtape makes you feel like Tesfaye himself is singing directly to you, arms outstretched and pleading for some love. What could be better? House of Balloons constantly surprises with quality samples, James Blake-esque autotuning, and highly sexualized lyrics. And when I mean sexualized, I mean sexualized. Check out songs like “Coming Down” or “Loft Music” – it feels like his singing is an attempt to make sweet love to your ears.

I don’t know what’s up with this whole uprising of YouTube rap artists (The Weeknd was discovered by posting three anonymous singles onto the site) but I just want to warn you that this hipster rap/R&B genre (à la Childish Gambino and Little B) may be put in the next Stuff White People Like.

This album is the answer for new, guilty pleasure music to make babies to. Don’t forget to stop and take a moment to head to his YouTube and check out his ability to rap over a Beach House sample with a suitable, black and white photo exemplifying the salaciousness in “The Party & The After Party”. Also, you can download the mixtape for free on his official website.
