Folks have been saying that hip-hop is not “musical” since fanny packs were popular, maybe even before that. I guess one could see that arguments’ root, however flawed, but in 2013 there can be just as much effort and musical ability put into a rap song as any other.

Saxophonist Sly 5thAve comes from the hip-hop cannon, but is able to do so much more. A frequent collaborator with Sene and the Brooklyn artist collective The Clubhouse, he’s lent his musical chops to Sene’s Brooklyknight LP as well as a gang of other projects. His ability and hustle has not gone without notice; the Purple One recently tapped the brass player to join his band on tour.

That hasn’t made Sly hit the brakes, though. As part of an ongoing cover series, Sly recently released an instrumental cover of Kendrick Lamar’s “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe.” Along with a cast of characters labeled The ClubCasa Chamber Orchestra, he reinterprets Kendrick’s single into an instrumental, live-instrument interpretation.

The good folks at OkayPlayer explain a bit more:

“Well this is just all types of awesome. The homie Sly5thAve and The ClubCasa Chamber Orchestra are going to start putting out weekly releases of reinterpretations of popular songs, and they get things kicked off  with this smoothed out cover of Kendrick Lamar‘s “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe.” The reinterpretation was produced by Sly (also on Saxes, Flutes, and Clarinets) featuring Jay Jennings (Trumpet, Flugelhorn), Joey Rayfield(Trombone), and mixed and mastered by Nolan Thies. Listen below, and look for a new one next week.”

Off the cult-classic album The Downward Spiral, “March of the Pigs” is an all on assault of metal guitars and Trent Reznor’s scream that helped epitomize the Nine Inch Nails sound. But Superhumanoids manage to turn the track into a beautiful synth-pop gem filled with soft vocals and R&B influenced synths.

It’s really hard to believe that this is the same song as it has been completely recreated, but Superhumanoids prove that they can make anything sound pretty.

Second up: can you believe this is a live recording? Turns out Mausi joined Huw Stephens for a BBC Radio 1 session at the start of May, performing this amazing track on the fly. Could have fooled me — the quality and execution is brilliant.

Keep your ears open for more from Mausi: this Newcastle-based quartet is destined to keep making ripples.

I cannot express how excited I was to discover that Foxtails Brigade covered a Jon Brion song. Ever since the movie I Heart Huckabees, I’ve held a soft spot for Jon Brion (who composed the entire movie). Considering that Foxtails Brigade is one of my new favorite bands, I was beyond ecstatic to listen to this song and watch the video, and I was not the least bit disappointed.

The Foxtails Brigade’s video for their version of “Little Person” is simply adorable and sweetly captivating. This animated piece features lead singer, Laura Weinbach, being a lonesome little person lost in the mix of this crazy world, and then discovering a creature who’s just like her. They frolic through the days, going on adventures and picnics and genuinely enjoying each other’s company.

The song itself is thick with orchestral arrangements — it’s truly a modern-day symphony of strings and Laura’s milky vocals. Foxtails Brigade have got such a gorgeous grasp on innovative orchestral folk pop that I have no doubt they are destined for great things. So do yourself a favor and listen to and watch “Little Person.” And what’s even better is that you can download this song for FREE!

This past weekend was the anniversary of MCA’s death.  The well-loved and respected one third of the Beastie Boys was not only a pioneer within the world of hip-hop, but his influence stretched across the musical soundscape.  Along with his fun-loving compadres, the Beastie Boys changed the world of music and have forever left their stamp on the industry and pop culture.  I can remember being in middle school and seeing the Beastie Boys music videos playing on MTV and thinking that nerdy white kids, like myself, could someday be cool.

One of my favorite of these videos was for their track “No Sleep ’til Brooklyn,” off of their smash hit album Licensed to Ill.  It was definitely a track that I spent years screaming aloud to while driving around with my friends, listening to the album so loud that I have possibly lost a good deal of my hearing due to those crazy nights.

Apparently I’m not the only Beastie Boys fan, because the alt-country rockers from Vancouver, Virginia Leaves, reposted their take on “No Sleep ’til Brooklyn” on their Soundcloud page in honor of MCA.  It kicks off the verse with some Americana-inspired acoustic guitar, but they really let the chorus rock, as could only be done with this song.  All with a bit of southern rock flair.  After all, Vancouver is in southern Canada.

For those who aren’t familiar with Australian radio station Triple J’s segment “Like A Version,” each week a band is asked to perform a song of their choosing live on air. Previously, we’ve seen things like Grizzly Bear covering Hot Chip, Ben Folds doing the Postal Service, and just last year, Bon Iver performed Anaïs Mitchell’s “Coming Down” (which Hannah featured here).

Sometimes bands butcher versions of songs to the point of blasphemy, but today’s edition is actually excellent. Triple J hosted Tame Impala (on an Australian national tour currently), and they put together a beautiful cover of Outkast’s “Prototype,” from the duo’s Grammy-winning 2003 album Speakerboxxx / The Love Below.

A great cover, in my opinion, doesn’t stray too far from the original, but has definite features of the performing band. I’m sure you’ll agree this one was carried out to perfection. From the funky bassline, the Kevin Parker/Nick Allbrook vocal combination, and the throbbing guitar riffs, Tame Impala get my thumbs up.

This just got me remembering how excellent this Outkast album truly was. Big Boi, Andre 3000… where are you? It’s been too long.

It’s always a little unfair to say you like a cover better than a classic, but I’m going to be a little unfair.

It’s true, Daft Punk serves as the sole inspiration, but Dr.Fresch’s “Something About Us” layers deep house digitalism with smooth vocals and jazzy riffs for a cover that’s surprisingly refreshing; essentially, it’s an ode to the more human evolution we can expect to hear on Random Access Memories.

Song: Bombay Bicycle Club - Always Like This (HVOB Cover) (Oliver Koletzki Remix) [download here]

Bombay Bicycle Club‘s “Always Like This“ is easily my favorite track by the band. There was a period in 2011 where I wouldn’t get out of bed each morning until I’d laid in the darkness and lip-synced the lyrics to myself like some mantra. I didn’t always believe that things wouldn’t “always be like this” but that was the entire point of my bizarre ritual and the raison d’etre of the song: you just have to convince others no matter what you really think.

BBC’s original never played the singer’s half-hearted attempts to convince the outside world as anything but, and part of its joy as a track was that just knew there was whole internal war inside the lyrics happening outside the melody of the song. HVOB’s (Her Voice Over Boys) cover as well as the masterful Oliver Koletzki remix take you directly to that interior mind-world.

HVOB’s vocals remind me of the hushed whispers of girding oneself against the sunshine shining through the blinds at dawn. The warm synths make the song’s foundation never lack a deep conviction towards healing, even as the vocals battle against the melancholy undertone. It’s a brilliant re-work all the way around.

Bombay Bicycle Club‘s “Always Like This“ is easily my favorite track by the band. There was a period in 2011 where I wouldn’t get out of bed each morning until I’d laid in the darkness and lip-synced the lyrics to myself like some mantra. I didn’t always believe that things wouldn’t “always be like this” but that was the entire point of my bizarre ritual and the raison d’etre of the song: you just have to convince others no matter what you really think.

BBC’s original never played the singer’s half-hearted attempts to convince the outside world as anything but, and part of its joy as a track was that just knew there was whole internal war inside the lyrics happening outside the melody of the song. HVOB’s (Her Voice Over Boys) cover as well as the masterful Oliver Koletzki remix take you directly to that interior mind-world.

HVOB’s vocals remind me of the hushed whispers of girding oneself against the sunshine shining through the blinds at dawn. The warm synths make the song’s foundation never lack a deep conviction towards healing, even as the vocals battle against the melancholy undertone. It’s a brilliant re-work all the way around.

So, there was period on the intertubez where the hullabaloo surrounding Daft Punk had reached such a deafening level that I lost all interest in hearing anything about the band. Seriously, Daft Punk fans are exhaustively intense (you got to love their passion, though). After awhile, I was a bit like Batman in this Daft Punk-themed meme. But, like Daughter’s music, their cover of  ”Get Lucky“ is the perfect salve for a reputation rubbed raw.

Daughter’s take is quintessentially them, with a controlled delivery leaving each bar lingering with baited breath. In that way, Daughter turns the track slightly ominous. It’s less an orgy of celebration and more the dark thoughts that come when convincing yourself to pursue a man who wears an enticing guise, but is clearly a dangerous walk down self-destruction lane.

In that way, it’s eerily similar to when The Bird and the Bee turned Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop the Music“ into a sensual affair for the ages. It’s quite the feat, but nothing less than the amazing tour de force we’ve come to expect from Daughter.

I know it’s been a little while since I’ve posted a soundtrack playlist, but during my hiatus my wife and I welcomed our beautiful daughter Madeline Grace into the world.  This led to me brainstorming a great movie soundtrack to honor her appearance into my life. Only one came to mind: Juno.

Juno is one of those movies that resonates with so many different types of people.  From one aspect, it’s the story of an eclectic uncompromising adolescent (played by Ellen Page) coming to terms with who she is while dealing with an unplanned pregnancy.  On the other hand, it follows married couple Mark and Vanessa (Played by Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner) coming to terms with not being able to have children as they look to adopt a baby and all the stresses that can accompany the process.

It’s like two different worlds colliding, as Juno’s life intersects with Mark and Vanessa’s, as shown in the varying musical taste of Juno (who’s into 70s punk) and Mark (who’s a product of 90s indie rock). Thankfully, this led to some great music being featured in the film, like Sonic Youth’s cover of the Carpenter’s classic “Superstar,” and two great Belle & Sebastian tracks.

The true standouts from the soundtrack were some of the beautiful acoustic tracks, filled with the quirkiness of the Moldy Peaches cover of “Anyone Else but You,” done by Ellen Page and Michael Cera or the heart-wrenching Cat Powers track “Sea of Love.”  These tracks served as the perfect backdrop to the storyline.

Ultimately, Juno is a movie all about love and doing what’s right no matter how hard it is. A quality that I hope my daughter will develop as she gets older.

Jennifer Page’s “Crush” was a solid repeat on my mixtapes of yesteryear. I distinctly remember sitting shotgun in my mom’s suburban, rocking out to this track on my Discman, hoping one day that I would be able to reference this song into my life somehow. It’s been a minute since I’ve heard it, but when I saw that Jai Paul recorded an electronic-infused cover, I had to check it out.

Uploaded on an untitled Bandcamp album, this version of the 1998 chart topper is an interesting hybrid baby of pop, electronic and funk – a track perfect to get this next weekend started in a sexy-smooth fashion. Is that a touch of Prince-inspired falsetto I hear? Maybe a little D’Angelo soul? Whatever it may be, light a candle and give it a listen.

Taking it back to the retro rocker era, Woods’ most recent single is a glorious cover of the classic Kinks track “God’s Children,” from the 1971 movie Percy.

It must be a hard task to make a song sound even more warm and celestial than the original, but these Brooklyn-based psych rockers have added the perfect summertime spin that even Simon & Garfunkel would be proud of.

This lo-fi, dream pop cover will be featured on the Woods new 7″ B-side due to release this summer via Woodsist.

Song: Kavinsky - Nightcall (Alice Jemima Cover) [download here]

I’m guessing the vast majority of you have come across Kavinsky’s “Nightcall” from the popular movie Drive, but you’ve probably never heard it quite like Alice Jemima’s interpretation. I’m quite a big fan of the young Brit; she just has one of those swooning voices that will win you over an instant, and it came to me as little surprise when I read of this ambitious cover.

Alice does what Alice does best, she strips everything down to its bare minimum, which reveals the true beauty of Kavinsky’s once synth-y and distorted masterpiece. Her vocals are as delicate and heartfelt as always, sitting on top of a dense and ambient guitar which immediately sets the mood.

I couldn’t imagine a better individual to cover this song, and I can’t wait to hear more from Alice Jemima this year!

While RAC made a name for himself by releasing killer remix after killer remix, André Alan Anjos has also executed a handful of amazing covers. More often than not, these include his wife Liz on vocals, which makes for an absolutely killer combination (don’t believe me? Check out this version of The Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979″).

This morning the two released their cover of The Cardigans’ “Lovefool” to celebrate hitting 30k fans on Facebook. The original song was included on The Cardigans’ 1996 album First Band On The Moon, so this cover is almost 17 years in the making. And it appears that, like a fine wine, this one has only gotten better with time.

SXSW has come to a close, and I’m friggin’ exhausted. But hey…still gotta post the Song of the Day, right?

Fortunately I stumbled upon this great cover of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s “Skeletons” by Of Monsters And Men. The original song was featured on the album It’s Blitz!, but this cover only surfaced about a month or two ago.

Probably the coolest part about this rendition is that it appears to have been performed live. And given the amazing quality, that’s pretty darn impressive. Clearly Of Monsters And Men are quite talented!

Shadows On Stars could never stay away for too long! This time they’re back with a cover in the form of Lykke Li’s “Little Bit.”

As soon as Shadows On Stars puts their name on anything, you know almost immediately that it’s going to be a galactic journey into a world of eletronica and beyond. This cover is no different. Imagine you’re drifting off into an atmospheric world of synths and robotic bass sounds. Add to that some soulful vocals and and a simple R&B beat, and you’ve got Shadows On Stars cover of “Little Bit.” It’s a little dark, a little bright, and a lot of awesome.

Perhaps Shadows On Stars should consider covering more songs. Their sound is so particular and innovative that I would only expect to be pleasantly surprised.

Imagine you’re drifting off into an atmospheric world of synths and robotic bass sounds. Add to that some soulful vocals and and a simple R&B beat, and you’ve got Shadows On Stars cover of “Little Bit.” It’s a little dark, a little bright, and a lot of awesome.

Perhaps Shadows On Stars should consider covering more songs. Their sound is so particular and innovative that I would only expect to be pleasantly surprised.

I was a camp kid growing up. Meaning I was one of those kids who went to and would not shut up about summer camp. I was obsessed. Truthfully, I still am — given the opportunity, I’d pack up and head to the mountains for a summer of lake swimming, woodworking, and friendship-bracelet-making in a second.

The best/worst thing about camp was saying goodbye; it was undeniably sad, but heavy with meaning and emotion proving just how much our summer together had meant. Inevitably, this was accompanied by a tearful sing-a-long to the John Denver classic, “Leaving On A Jet Plane.”

Now, I may have grown out of a lot things since those days (the tendency to wear hemp bracelets, a deep-seeded love of Guster and Dispatch), and into new things (snark, sarcasm, skinny jeans), but the emotional impact of the John Denver classic has remained unchanged. Trust me, I’m as surprised as you are.

This My Morning Jacket cover is part of an upcoming tribute album, featuring J. Mascis and Sharon Van Etten, Old Crow Medicine Show, Allen Stone, and others. While many covers promise to stray from the Denver originals in an interesting, unexpected way, the MMJ version of “Jet Plane” is as tender and heartbreaking as the original. Jim James’s smoky lilt caresses the timeless refrain, “Now kiss me and smile for me, tell me that you’ll wait for me, hold me like you’ll like you’ll never let me go,” with deep, genuine emotion, carried along by a delicate smattering of guitar strings.

For me, this song is wrapped up in campfires and crushes. But now it has infinitely more layers of meaning — heartbreak and life-shattering changes, moves and new beginnings, the tender sadness of goodbye, but the hope that can go along with it. Some things, John Denver included, really do get better with age.

Telling is a brand new project from Melbourne natives, producer Tim Shiel and singer/songwriter Ben Abraham. This collaboration is as fresh as it gets — I just became the second person to “like” their Facebook page — with the two working on Telling over the past year. This was no simple feat; Shiel played keyboard in Gotye’s band (I’m sure that’s a pretty full-time gig), and Abraham split his time between Nashville and his home town.

What has resulted is rather breathtaking, with the twosome just releasing their debut track “Stella.” A cover of Melbourne artist Bertie Blackman’s track of the same name, the vocals were recorded in Nashville with Shiel piecing the orchestration together during Gotye’s European tour late last year. This is a truly awesome piece of music, the somber but soulful lyrics are aided by the beautifully arranged musical landscape, with icy tones developing into stunning string choruses. It’s one of those tracks you can’t bring yourself to stop listening to, even if you’ve played it over and over (like I have!).

Settling. are two young lads from Brisbane, Australia who make experimental, acoustic music from the comfort of their bedrooms.

What started as a solo project for 19-year-old Tim Swanston turned into a duo following the explosive response that this Beyonce cover, created with friend Kurtis Tupangaia, has received since its upload on SoundCloud two days ago. The combination of Tupangaia’s haunting vocals with the brooding, acoustic guitar work by Swanston make the cover nearly unrecognizable from its original form.

Nearly 1000 listens and 50 downloads in less than 48 hours is an amazing feat for such a small, unsigned act, especially for what was nothing more than a late-night home project. By the time this review is posted, I’m guessing those numbers probably will have doubled. Not exactly what you’d expect from a pair of university students studying Economics and Town Planning, hey?

Settling. are currently working on their first EP, due to be released some time in June. After Tim hopefully passes his accounting exam, that is.

As an Australian blogger, I get a bit funny when writers from other countries review an Australian track before I get a chance. Perth-based producer Ta-ku is one of those acts who a couple of my colleagues always manage to beat me to (I’m looking at you David and Anu). One of the country’s most sought-after beatmakers, he recently caused a flurry of attention after releasing his entire (and prolific) back catalogue for free download.

The track I bring you today is “BrokeAs,” a mash-up of TLC’s “No Scrubs.” The Redbull Music alumni has put his recognizable fingerprints all over this one, with smooth synths being broken up with staggered lyrics and his familiar frenetic drum-kit.
