I covered Kids of The Apocalypse back when they were a just worldwide collective that appeared out of nowhere, albeit one with great promise and a video for a debut single that smacked of major label collusion. Then they disappeared for a few months. That is, until of nowhere, London Grammar uploaded this slamming remix of their now killer hit, “Wasting My Young Years.”

While I liked the original, it certainly dragged a bit in parts. But KOTA’s version never misses a beat, or lets you sit down for that matter. It’s a thunderous remake of a gut wrenching song that’s reminiscent of Until the Ribbon Break’s electronic moodiness, Ryan Hemsworth’s intricate passion, and Florence Welch’s charisma rolled into one.

On their second fare, KOTA prove once again that epic soundscapes are their aim. Now, if they’d only stick around long enough for us to get a feel for them, or break into their secret lair and discovery their identities. Because this guy (and I’m pointing a finger at myself) is utterly intrigued.

Texan Andrew “There Will Be Booty” Hoke, aka Bird Peterson, is part of the Mad Decent/ Teenage Riot fam who has been mastering the art of bass, before Ace of Bass, and advocating the youthful nation to bounce for years now.  I was first introduced to him through his trunk popping alias, Drankenstein, back in March via his SXSW mix – you should check it out.

Finally, after months of heckling, Bird Peterson came through with the freshest remix of Lil Troy’s “Wanna Be A Baller.”  This track will take you way back to when you were sittin’ fat down south in 99′ sippin on capri suns after school — at least, it did for me.  While keeping the OG’ness of the song in tack and in true Bird Peterson/Drankenstein form, he adds the low-end, booty shakin’ bass and rhythm that will get the twenty inch blades on thee impala spinning, and might even get you laid tonight.

So I’m gonna hit the highway and make money the fly way, but if you like what you’re hearing, booty shake on over to his SoundCloud page to cop more Drankenstein juice.

As soon as I started watching A Trak & Tommy Trash’s video for “Tuna Melt,” my jaw dropped and stayed that way for the whole video.

Filmed by the guys over at Pier Pictures, I was sent the video with a humbly accompanied statement: “We put a TON of work into the project.” I’LL SAY!

This is physics at its modern best thanks to kinetic artist Kinetic King. I was so blown away by the calculated accuracy that was needed to execute this entire video in ONE take and I think you will be too. The mad scientist Flux Pavilion has injected some potion into his old hit to give it some new life.

Even though the original jam was overplayed and remixed, I still can’t stop myself from posting the new monster track. “I Still Can’t Stop” has come back to life to haunt those who feared the return of the original and to cause more ruckus in ear drums everywhere.

The newer version of Flux Pavilion’s “I Can’t Stop” feels a bit more trappy than its predecessor, which I’m not complaining about.

Dirtybird resident Eats Everything must have just updated his remix set, because it showed up top on my SoundCloud feed today. This gave me a chance to backtrack into some of his previous remixes I had forgotten about, namely this one from the White Stripes.

What I love most about “Hello Operator” is that it’s the best example I’ve heard, thus far, that bridges two of my favorite musical styles — garage country blues rock and jackin’ booty house. The energy of these two styles comes from very much the same place: libido charged music, sex appeal woven into every measure. Maybe that’s why Eats Everything’s edit works so well.

“Hello Operator” is also a good reminder of the dude that everyone loves to hate — Jack White. Sure, he might have always been too big for his britches and a little too agro for a great portion of the musical community, but his music is phenomenal, so you know, he’s allowed to be a bit much. Don’t you think?

Scope out more of what Eats Everything has to offer in his remix set. The selection will surely help expand your musical mind and make your day a lot more eclectic.

TWRK is remaining aloof — even after their third impressive release, “Living Room,” went up on their SoundCloud. With massive releases slated for both OWSLA and Mista Jam’s BBC Radio show in the upcoming months, the boys of TWRK are keeping their identity on the DL for now. They might be sitting next to you in a cafe right now.

I was able to get a few words out of the tight-lipped duo; I may or may not have been sworn to secrecy, blindfolded, given hallucinogenics and driven around for a few hours before they spoke to me through a friend of theirs that will only be referred to by his initials, J.J.

“We met in grade school in Oslo (Norway) and met up with Dan Gerous over the Internet in a MIRC chat room,” they said.

And what’s next?

“Our plan is to take twerk/bounce shit to the masses, and make every girl in the world pregnant by mid-July.”

“Living Room” has been out for a a short time now and I do feel a little bit different (I’ll let you know in a few months if their plan worked). With cover art of a pixie-cut Miley Cyrus twerking, and a teasing intro of Eve’s “Let Me Blow Your Mind,” they’ve got the powerful seduction techniques in play for the entirety of the track. We want more!

I thought I’d immediately miss Amber Coffman’s voice on this rework of “Get Free” with Chronixx’s vocals layered over, and probably I do, but this track reminds me of how powerful the production is on its own.

The vibrant tremble of Coffman’s voice surprisingly paired with the “Get Free” beat is what made the original track so brilliant. On the other hand, Chronixx’s soothing reggae rhythm fits in seamlessly with the backdrop on “Where I Come From,” and it’s as if you can hear Coffman’s voice in the distance.

Maybe it would have been beautiful to hear them all together, but the rework brings a soothing, sensual groove on its own — and when Chronixx pushes his voice, it’s magic.

Checking out this song was a no-brainer for me, as I am already a huge fan of Banks. Now I’m becoming familiar with Djemba Djemba, who has recently just flipped Banks’ smooth and sexy song “Fall Over” into a club banger. Djemba Djemba is no stranger to the lime light recently, releasing tracks via Diplo’s Mad Decent record label as well as sharing the stage with artist such as Diplo, Bauuer, Rusko, and Major Lazer — he’s a DJ/producer force to be reckoned with, for sure.

The remix of “Fall Over” begins like a typical Banks track — soft, smooth and sultry. But then Djemba Djemba’s true colors come out around the one minute mark, progressing the track into banger-mode.  While there is very little kept from the original version, Djemba Djemba keeps my ears guessing by constantly switching up the beat, tempo, and melody from smooth to ganster in true trapster form.

Djemba Djemba’s remix is currently available for free download over on his SoundCloud page.  And if you’re diggin’ the jam, I recommend checking out his remix of Fiona Apple’s “Every Single Night” as well.

Recognized for their killer live performances, Diplo and crew know how to put on a variety hour of in-your-face entertainment. From hot hype dancers to plastic ball crowd surfing and making it rain with Major Lazer money, Diplo definitely leaves an energetic imprint on any surface he comes across, and this Thursday night at The Independent was no exception.

From the start of their show, I knew I was in for a whirlwind of a night. Dressed to the nines in his all-black suit, Diplo took the stage with microphone in hand motioning at the crowd to start moving to the Major Lazer version of Rhianna’s ”Stay.” Throughout the course of their set, I heard a range of tracks, from their debut Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do to some of the tracks off their soon-to-be released LP (including the infamous Bubble Butt song). And, of course, Diplo had to throw some of his solo work into the mix. No complaints there.

Calling this experience a “show” is an understatement. This was an all out party that required everyone to get involved and go apeshit. From the on-stage twerk sessions all the way to Diplo’s plastic orb crowd surf, these dudes know how to work an audience and get them to shake their booties. Dude is a machine, a sexy DJ machine from Planet Lazer who is here to abduct and blast us to his world. Now who’s coming with me?

Amongst all of the electronic artists hitting the San Francisco circuit these upcoming months, one group that always seems to garner plenty of well-deserved attention is Major Lazer. It took the Aussies of RÜFÜS seven months in seclusion and 18 hours a day to put together the album that spawned “Take Me.” Almost immediately after its release, the wistful indie pop ballad was transformed into a marauding house jam. Remixing honors go to Adapt or Die, recent additions to the late DJ AJAX’s Sweat It Out label. People with this talent would usually have quit their day jobs by now, but when your day job is being part of The Swiss or touring with Empire of the Sun, it’s a little too legit to quit.

The remix maintains the filtered vocals of the original but chops them up and drops in a dark brooding bass line to get you vibing. Even with its intense beat, the song retains a funky groove, enlisting the help of some melodic keys that cascade in the background. I’m sure you’ll agree that the laid-back harmonies of the guys complement the high energy of the beat. The best thing about this track?  It’s available for free download!

Disclosure’s “White Noise,” featuring AlunaGeorge, was begging for an amazing remix, mostly because it’s been on repeat too many times itself.

Scotland’s Hudson Mohawke takes on the part of drummer boy leading us into his remix. The percussion bounces and the synths pop. We rapidly fall into a temperamental cage of future R&B, with Aluna Francis’ voice offered up as an airy escape, although HudMo also leads the way out. It’s an unexpected, comparatively subtle remix from the producer, sure to also be on repeat.

Browsing through his tracks I came across one remix of Frank Ocean’s “Novacane” which caught my attention as soon as I pressed play.  It’s clear that these two tracks are different in pace and aesthetic, under which Jamrock explores the possibilities of new sounds and beat progressions, but it’s not a deal breaker in my opinion. Once you get passed the fact that he’s taking things up a notch,  you can start to feel as though you are being magically transported to some sweaty dance club in the Caribbean — with moombahton influence permeating through your ears — only to suddenly be taken back to SoCal soaking up the sun, cold beer and blunt in hand.

Peep the track and let that “Novacane” take you to a place where you can’t feel your face.

Baauer has been on the electronic music landscape for a couple months now with his addictive tracks “Harlem Shake” and “Yaow!,” but today we give you a recent collab between him and fellow beatmaker Just Blaze, titled “Higher.”

This track, much like his previous, is enhanced with energetic beats, bass-filled terrain, intense interludes, and also incorporates a sample of Jay-Z’s Blueprint cut “You Don’t know,” which doesn’t come as much of a surprise knowing that Just Blaze has musical ties to artists such as Jay-Z, Kanye, and Busta.

These arising electro/trap/heavy bass dudes surely motivate you to move your body to the dance floor, and I for one am excited to see what else they come up with on their Big League Tour in the upcoming months.

Right out of the gate, this track begins with some high caliber “Pressure.”  The music blasts from your speakers, carrying the lyrics “I’ve been knee deep in trouble/Trying to staying afloat ” straight to your frontal cortex, demanding your attention.  But what’s so brilliant about this track is it doesn’t feel the urge to keep that energy up throughout.

Instead, the track rises and falls, utilizing some very Diplo-esque drops to simulate the real life pressure of a long seething anxiety, rather than a moment of straight fight or flight syndrome. Featuring no fewer than two drops, the song segments itself to fool the listener into expecting a relief that will never come.

The ‘pressure’ is never specified, which strengthens the track even more by allowing the listener to adopt his or her own histories to the track. But what is clear is that whatever that pressure is — be it hard fought for goals, the law or the consequences of poor choices — it’s keeping the singer disconnected, unable to love someone he clearly would “in another lifetime.” His emotive singing and this style of lyricism reminds me of Stateless in all the best ways.

This track was actually introduced onto the web about a year ago, but the band allowed the song to flow to listeners organically, trying to see the way music spreads in this day of the indie blogosphere. I remember reading about it back in October on the Erratic Man, but it wasn’t until Disco Naïveté pointed out their new YouTube video that it stuck enough for me to review.

About a month ago, Major Lazer teamed up with English EDM producer Flux Pavillion for this reggae-turned-dubstep collaboration titled “Jah No Partial.” Right from the start, you get an old-school dancehall aesthetic, and then at about thirty seconds in you get smashed with Flux Pavillion’s heavy bass and electronics.

Together, they transform Johnny Osborne’s Reggae classic “Mr. Marshall” into a piece of wobbling, bursting, ass-shaking mania. Leave it to Diplo and his crew to make this plethora of genres flow together so faultlessly.
