It’s not often that a brand new song from an unknown artists leaves you with your jaw on the floor, but Kill J’s single “Phoenix” has pretty much done just that for to me.

Naturally, that leads to the next question: who is Kill J? According to Pigeons & Planes, there’s virtually no information out there save for a few mysterious pictures. What we do know is that the band is from Denmark.

While I suppose that’s a bit frustrating, I’m finding it pretty easy to come to terms with. Good music speaks for itself, and given the absence of further detail here, I’m all about hitting play and zoning out.

I just happened to stumble across Minks while perusing SoundCloud, and I’m so glad I did! This solo project’s single, “Painted Indian,” has got me all pepped up.

As Minks’ SoundCloud kept streaming, I was having a hard time choosing one song to focus on because they’re all real nice. It’s the type of music you listen to when you want to feel happy and carefree. And who doesn’t want that? It’s always a good day when there is new Astronauts, etc. music to share. A few weeks back, the Berkeley-based producer reached out to me with this funky little tune called “Sadie.” It reminded me of the last Astronauts, etc. song I hyped, “Coldboy.” There is something a tad bit haunting about the vocals — seemingly in sync and at odds with the sharp, shifting synth work.

Astronauts, etc. walks this line between contemplative R&B and dance floor pop. I can listen to a track like “Sadie” or “Coldboy” and have such different emotional responses depending on the moment. Maybe I’ll want to dance around a bit, or maybe I’ll just sit quietly with my memories. Either way, I know I’m losing myself in the music.

I kind of don’t want to leave the interior of “On The Run.” It’s snapping me right back to every feel-good moment I’ve ever had.

Young Melbourne band Snakadaktal have captured their fair share of hearts over the past couple of years. Formed in 2009, the school friends first entered the spotlight after winning the Triple J Unearthed High competition in 2011, paving the way for their debut EP release later that year. The EP was a breakout success, with singles “Chimera” then “Dance Bear” widely circulated through radio and online (including on our humble site).

Recorded in an old horse stable, the band’s debut album Sleep in the Water is due out on August 2nd, and they’ve just given us the first taste of what to expect with the record’s first single “Ghost.”

Demonstrating talent beyond their years, “Ghost” sees the band take on a deeper, melancholic tone than what we’ve heard in the past. Slinky bass throbs, subdued percussion and twinkling guitar riffs make for a particularly mellow tune, especially when one adds the misty vocals of Phoebe Cockburn.

This is by far my favorite work to date from this talented group, and I’m excited to see what more they have to offer. By the way, in case you were wondering – a Snakadaktal is the cross between a pterodactyl and a snake…obviously.

Whitley is the moniker of Melbourne’s Lawrence Greenwood, a talented and enigmatic singer/songwriter who has spent the last couple of years in musical hiatus. After releasing his much-loved LP Go Forth, Find Mammoth in 2009, he’s spent the last couple of years traveling the globe, planning his return to the spotlight. Now complete, news of his next album, Even the Stars are a Mess, has been revealed — with a release date scheduled for July 5, 2013.

The album’s first single indicates the wait may well be worth it, with “My Heart is not a Machine” an absolutely gorgeous folk-pop lament. Greenwood’s warm vocals have been joined by the echoing harmonies of Esther Holt to create a stunningly heartfelt tale of introspection. With voices like this, you don’t need too much else, and the steady percussion and hovering guitar work are just enough to finish this one off.

A couple of great remixes of this one have also recently become available (here) from Leadbetter and Fractures — both worth checking out if you love this song as much as I do.

Recently added to the sold-out Splendour in the Grass festival (which will also feature performances from Frank Ocean, Mumford and Sons and The National), expect this to be a triumphant return for this truly talented individual.

San Francisco’s Seatraffic is back with a new single, “Conscious Awake.”

This breezy rendition that fits perfectly into the chillwave movement lends a lot of just that — chill waves of sound that are bound to take it down a few notches. The fresh and clean synths are accompanied by heavy yet deliberate drum beats, which makes for a nice contrast. The lazy vocals are reminiscent of how one would feel on a hot summer day — lackadaisical, slow-going, and effortless.

The balance between these elements gives Seatraffic their unique atmospheric sound that they continue to evolve with each release.

San Francisco’s Seatraffic is back with a new single, “Conscious Awake.”

This breezy rendition that fits perfectly into the chillwave movement lends a lot of just that — chill waves of sound that are bound to take it down a few notches. The fresh and clean synths are accompanied by heavy yet deliberate drum beats, which makes for a nice contrast. The lazy vocals are reminiscent of how one would feel on a hot summer day — lackadaisical, slow-going, and effortless.

The balance between these elements gives Seatraffic their unique atmospheric sound that they continue to evolve with each release.

I know it’s not my place to be talking about Australian bands (sorry Hugh, Justin), but this new track from Greyjoy couldn’t help but grab my attention.

If you are a fan of HBO’s Girls and/or haven’t been living under a rock these last couple of years, you are more than likely familiar with Robyn’s massive hit, “Dancing On My Own.” Homegirl has risen to the top as one of indie pop’s main contenders with her sweet Swedish vocals and sick dance moves, so it comes as no surprise that people are taking to her hits and delivering their own unique spin on things.

Real Magic’s Drew Englander dives into this famous single and delivers an experimental pop cover equipped with chilled-out 80s synths and mellow dance rhythms. You can immediately tell that he doesn’t want to change things up too much, which I’m sure many Robyn fans can appreciate.

Shining Bird is a group of musicians from Austinmer, a small beachside town just south of Sydney. Draftsmen, scholars and bodysurfers make up the rag-tag bunch, who came together over their love of music and poetry. After releasing an EP last year, they’re gearing up for the release of their debut album, due out later this year.

If you’ve ever been to the NSW South Coast, you’ll understand what a beautiful, laid-back place it is. ”Distant Dreaming” is the first single off the album, and the track is exactly what you’d expect music from this area to be like. Everything about its musical arrangement emits a gorgeous warmth, topped off with Dane Taylor’s rich, deep vocals.

This was a lovely introduction to this band for me, and if the rest of the album is like this, it will be a perfect soundtrack for the Australian summer.

Captured Tracks is an indie label based in Brooklyn, and I’ve recently had the pleasure of stumbling upon some of their extremely talented artists. Last week, I posted a track by the curious artist Mac Demarco, who is signed to the savvy label. This week, I give you MINKS and their wavy, relaxing track titled “Everything’s Fine.”

Frontman/songwriter Sonny Kilfoyle and producer/engineer Mark Verbos are a force of nature, creating some sensational melodies. They describe their upcoming project, Tides End, on their homepage as “not just a romantic trip into isolation, but a melodic and warm experience to immerse yourself in. It’s a pop record, with all the hooks and harmonies you’d expect from that, delivered with experience, depth and hope.” 

Deep stuff, and I’m diggin’ it.

CHVRCHES haven’t released anything since February’s “Recover,” so this new single titled “Gun” is a bit of a pleasant surprise. That said — it’s also slightly underwhelming. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what’s missing, besides saying that there simply isn’t any stand-out “hook.”

So, I’m in the minority here, but I thought HAERTS‘ debut single, “Wings,” went a little far over into that sickly sweet territory. I mean, if I was running a bath post-some monumental breakup, it would have been perfect, but for every day listening, its soft edges and effusively maudlin lyrics grated me a bit.

That said, “All The Days,” their new, just-released single (living on the seat of our pants, Shufflers!) falls into none of those traps. Soaringly anthemic with just the right amount of bittersweet heartache to it, “All The Days” trots through its four and a half minutes at an impressive clip, trampling me into submission. Those power of those drums can surely be not denied… they’ll mainline right into your heart.

More tracks like this, HAERTS, and your romantic side might just become totally anodyne to my cynical side. Hell, you might just even de-thaw my frigid heart.

Every time Melbourne-based I’lls release something new, I think to myself, “This is it for them right? They can’t improve on this one!” Then they go ahead and do just that.

The classically trained trio released their debut EP Thread back in 2011, and their second, A Warm Reception, is due out on June 17. The EP’s first single, “Plans Only Drawn,” was featured on Indie Shuffle back in March, and they’ve just released another absolutely delectable track.

“Speak Low” is an introspective masterpiece; the warmth this track gives off is unbelievable. Everything about it creates a fantastical dreamscape — from the deep bass riffs, to the withdrawn percussion and gentle keys, all the elements are balanced to perfection. Simon Lam’s vocals drift in and out throughout; you couldn’t have a different voice on this track.

To wrap this up, I write about music that I like, so there’s nothing new about me saying that this is a good band. But, I’lls aren’t just a good band — they’re a special one.

This is the type of song you turn on when you’re looking to tune in and tune out. There’s an undeniably breezy and light quality to the character of this song — it’s slightly slow-paced for those relaxing days when you want to take it down a few notches. Pure Bathing Culture has the uncanny ability to bring that through their music.

Hearing this single makes me anticipate the release of their debut album, Moon Tides, even more! Mark your calendars for August 20, 2013 when it drops!

I’ve been pretty amped for Baths upcoming LP, Obsidian. Will Wiesenfeld, who fronts the band, floored me with his freshman LP, Cerulean, back in 2010, and I’ve been more or less biding my time for his next release since then.

He recently dropped  the new single “Ironworks” from the upcoming album (due May 28), and my excitement continues to grow. Wiesenfeld’s harmonies in “Ironworks” are slick and on point.  And, as always, Baths really works the silky falsetto in a way that few others can. Somewhere out there is a member of a boy’s choir listening to this and crying.

But Baths’ real genius is in his tightly honed production. The track features softly percussive ambient melodies chopped and layered over piano and string arrangements that are allowed to develop a bit more than on Cerulean. Overall “Ironworks,” and Obsidian in general (based on the handful of leaked songs) seem to take on a darker more brooding vibe than Baths’ earlier work. (I mean, check out the album cover).

But dark can be good. And if Baths wants to do dark, I’m more than happy to indulge him. Mark your calendars. I’m expecting big things.

I’ve been pretty amped for Baths upcoming LP, Obsidian. Will Wiesenfeld, who fronts the band, floored me with his freshman LP, Cerulean, back in 2010, and I’ve been more or less biding my time for his next release since then.

He recently dropped  the new single “Ironworks” from the upcoming album (due May 28), and my excitement continues to grow. Wiesenfeld’s harmonies in “Ironworks” are slick and on point.  And, as always, Baths really works the silky falsetto in a way that few others can. Somewhere out there is a member of a boy’s choir listening to this and crying.

“Flutter” is the well-crafted creation of Bristol-based up-and-comer Oliver Wilde, a producing and musical wonder. Released as a teaser for his upcoming debut LP titled A Brief Introduction To Un-Natural Light Years (which is set to be released sometime in July via Howling Owl Records), Wilde has begun to emerge with noticeable force.

Wilde’s sound is introspective, reflective, and reeks of riffs similar to the likes of Angus and Julia Stone, Atlas Sound, and Phoria. With an electronic hint, this melancholic track sets the mood for the rest of A Brief Introduction To Un-Natural Light Years, which Wilde plans to reveal track by track, building to its final release in July.

There seems to be a huge crop of beautiful synth-pop artists popping up all over the Internet these days. Today I came across one of the newest: Edith Beake.

Edith Beake is a brother-sister duo from Oak Park, Illinois.  There isn’t a whole lot of info about them out there; for instance, their SoundCloud profile picture is just a plain black image. No Facebook page, no Twitter account…  just a few features on some blogs. However, what they lack in social media, they make up for in musical talent.

Their song “Always In Love,” is an 80s inspired trip into the past.  Kicking off with some simple synthesizer and delicate vocals, the track adds layer after juicy layer until it turns into a sultry dream pop anthem.  It kind of reminds me of being a teenager in love in the summer, and it would probably sound even better while sitting on the hood of a car.  I think it would have been the perfect addition to any of the soundtracks for John Hughes’ classic flicks.

Lucky for us, it still works today.  I can’t wait to see what else Edith Beake has in store for us.

Newly introduced indie pop songstress Banks has already started building up some buzz with tracks like “Before I Ever Met You.”  Garnering comparisons to the likes of Lana Del Ray and Fiona Apple, it’s no surprise that she is gaining momentum.

The buzz continues with her newest track “Warm Water,” produced by the talented English producer Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs.  It’s a sparse electronic midnight rendezvous, centered around Bank’s sultry vocals. Less is definitely more, and this track is the perfect follow-up to her first EP, which you can check out here.

I must warn you though, it just might be love at first listen…
