Drum & bass emanates from these parts very rarely, but we think that makes it all the more special when it finally gets us hyped up.

On heavy rotation at the moment is American artist Dave Owen‘s track, “Deep Breathin.” Released on the legendary LTJ Bukem’s Good Looking Records, it’s a jazzy number — which comes as no surprise from a producer so heavily hip-hop indebted.

What's so good?

Muzzy is a mindful producer, conscious of nostalgia (Detroit and its techno roots), yet rooted in innovation. His masterful sound is more technically admirable than awe-inspiringly nascent, meaning he didn’t just appear with God-given talent. He honed and carved out his sound, which is scary because this bright bulb is only a mere 20 years old.

When not playing guitar with fellow up-and-coming phenom Griz, Muzzy can be found hard at work to make the neon shake and the moon howl.

The track at hand, “Siamese Ratchet Funk,” is a preview of the new material Muzzy has lined up to start dropping real soon. If what he has in store for us is as infectious and unctuous as this little snippet, then call me excited. Muzzy makes you want to slip n’ slide across the dance floor!

As a friend recently remarked, Muzzy sounds like “J Dilla made love to hyphy trap beats.” That’s a mash up I’d love to hear… for now I’m more than content to get fuzzy with Muzzy.

We’re excited to be featuring another track with Angel Haze! The base of this song is Rudimental’s workings; the layering of translucent electro differs from their previous songs, yet is more than welcome on this emotional tale. The four boys that make up Rudimental are playing a large role across the pond, even though they’ve yet to release their debut album, and will be present for this year’s SXSW to imprint on us their Euro ways.

This track prefaces their debut album, due out early this year, which also features their initial release and chart-topping song “Feel The Love” and critically acclaimed video for “Not Giving In.” On “Hell Could Freeze,” Rudimental expands their tastes past the European club hits off their resume and into the realm of hip-hop with verses from one of America’s leading underground ladies, Angel Haze.

What's so good?

How was this track not already on Indie Shuffle? The world may never know. All that matters is that it’s here now. For those who may be unfamiliar with Birdy, the talented 16-year-old out of the U.K. stormed the blog scene with her beautiful takes on “1901” and “Skinny Love.”

Birdy has also released some great original material, including a lovely tune called “People Help the People.” I’m a big fan of the track. With that said, I am a BIG fan of Two Inch Punch’s sunken hearts rework. From the synths to the bass to the vocal warp, everything about this edit clicks. Soulful feels like an understatement.

As one SoundClouder said, “I can repeat this track hundreds and hundreds of times.”

What's so good?

It’s not that often (unfortunately) that I actually blog about artists residing in the amazing city that is San Francisco, so today is a special day. As an occupant of the bay-side metropolis, it’s always nice to tout the local talent.

Kastle, with the given name Barrett Richards, channels a sound from across the sea; upon a blind listen, most would probably assume this dude is rubbing elbows with the brotherly duo Disclosure after grabbing a pint with James Blake. With bass-heavy future garage bleeding from every pore, Richards definitely is a producer to watch.

His single “Can’t Explain” draws influences from trap, drum and bass, garage, and others to form a perfect musical storm. I can’t get enough. For more from this talented man, check out his SoundCloud page here.

What's so good?

Mmm. Adele samples get me all hot and bothered. This track features that sweet little chorus from “Melt My Heart to Stone,” which Childish Gambino featured in “Do Ya Like.” It oddly reminds me of that track, which is good, but it doesn’t sound anything like it. It’s slowed down, repetitive, and more hollowed out on drum and bass. There are also some sweet little drum kicks in the background along with surreal vocals. Overall, a killer track.

I haven’t been able to find out much about the artist, W.B. Allen, aka Oppaa. Sparse SoundCloud, and a single free download on his Bandcamp. If you’re the artist, feel free to get in touch. We’re keen to see what’s next.

Set to the sexy backdrop of Diplo’s “Set It Off,” Katy B’s track “Light As A Feather” has the makings of a successful pop hit. It showcases upbeat proportions of solid beat-driven, electronic groundwork from one of the world’s most prolific producers.

Part of her Danger EP, this track also features the Aussie rap stylings of Iggy Azalea, making it full of weird awesomeness that is unexpected, but pleasing nonetheless. It’s undeniable this Brit’s got some epic pipes that definitely make her sweet-sounding R&B melodies shine alongside such a powerful bassline.

What's so good?

This is the newest song I have on autorepeat. I’m really into the captivating repetition of the “Show Me Love” lyrics — they’re a perfect high-pitch / low-pitch trade-off, and the beeps and bops pair well with the heartbreaking refrain. The synth swims along a selection of samples from The Notebook, and I won’t lie, I’m really digging it. Suits the song, in my opinion. And yes, kinda cheesy. But, then again, I’m a romantic. Sue me. Luckily, it’s not as terrible as having to sit through the entire film.

I found this track through YouTube. The top comment on the video was really elegant, so I’ll just leave it in the words of poster ‘rkasnake’…

“Winter is coming, and these tunes are appealing to me once again. What was once a bright sunny day, warmth and joy, turns into a gloomy, cold, and cozy days next to the fire. Profound, huh? Pi3 is Pavel Petrov, a Portugese producer. You can discover him on SoundCloud. Not much output lately, last track was three months ago, and this track was made a year ago. Still, a nice listen for your winter appeal.

About a month ago, Major Lazer teamed up with English EDM producer Flux Pavillion for this reggae-turned-dubstep collaboration titled “Jah No Partial.” Right from the start, you get an old-school dancehall aesthetic, and then at about thirty seconds in you get smashed with Flux Pavillion’s heavy bass and electronics.

Together, they transform Johnny Osborne’s Reggae classic “Mr. Marshall” into a piece of wobbling, bursting, ass-shaking mania. Leave it to Diplo and his crew to make this plethora of genres flow together so faultlessly.

Listen to the track and get pumped for Major Lazer’s new album Free The Universe, out February 19 on Mad Decent/Downtown.

Bachelors of Science haven’t had any breakout tracks in some time now. But, about 2.5 years ago they were poised for something great, generating massive buzz throughout the blogosphere.

Why? Well, they released two popular remixes: Death Cab For Cutie’s “Brothers On A Hotel Bed,” and this version of The xx’s “Infinity.”

When this drum & bass-heavy rendition popped up this morning, I quickly determined that it stands the test as one of the better remixes of The xx. So, props to BoS for helping me land on a great Sunday track.

Holly Herndon – Fade

What's so good?

Holly Herndon’s “Fade” sounds like a dance track that you might hear clubbing inside of Robert Moog’s brain if he was on acid and had a tiny dance club in his brain. (Robert Moog was the physicist who invented the synthesizer, if you were wondering.)

Part mad science project, part clubby drum and bass syth-straveganza, “Fade” is all awesome. It’s also by my estimation, the standout (and most accessible) track on Holly Herndon’s recent album Movement.

Herndon got her start DJing in Berlin before studying electronic music composition at Mills College and then Stanford. The influence of the club as well as academia are both evident in her freshman effort under the NY record label RVNG intl.

The album is pretty out there. It involves a lot of bizarre manipulation of Herndon’s voice as well as world sounds, e.g. a crinkling plastic bag that is reduced into glitchy locust-like oscillations in “Terminal,” or Herndon’s sharp inhalations warped into a rasping series of strangely demonic tones that build into chords on “Breathe.” All of this is set to synth-heavy break-beats and bass lines that ebb and flow through tracks, and often dissolve into brooding atmospheric soundscapes. Yeah, it’s definitely out there. But that’s a good thing. Movements is challenging — it’s different, refreshing.

For many listeners, the album might be a little esoteric, several of the tracks delve closer to what I might consider sound experiments rather than anything I could unpretentiously call music. But in her experimentation, Herndon creates a sound that is singular. A sound that is, at times, chilling, intimate, evocative, even grating, but that nevertheless remains captivating from start to finish. Any self-proclaimed music connoisseur probably ought to give this album a listen. But if all of this sounds a little avant garde for you, then at the very least, do yourself the service of basking in the awesomeness that is “Fade.”

Cloaka & Boxwork – Toppin’ Up

What's so good?

MadTech must be in a MadDecent sort of mood. Check out this raunchy bass track they just dropped from Cloaka & Boxwork.

Maybe it’s unfair to compare the labels. MadTech triumphs when it comes to innovative quality music; nevertheless, it’s a surprising sound to come out of the label who has, up until now, been predominantly house and garage music. But this bold stride in a new direction implies that the label is keen being diverse.

Cloaka & Boxwork, both residing in London and both having their own respective careers, seem to have just recently collided to bring us “Toppin’ Up” and it’s a massive track. If you have yet to feel the boom, there’s no doubt you’ll pick up on those shock waves at some point.

What's so good?

It seems that as of late, the songs that really get people pumped and into the dancing spirit are ones that dive into that future experimental style of trip-hop — a genre packed with earth-shattering monstrous bass beats, minimal electronic productions and R&B-laced rhythms.

One group that takes the best parts of that genre is TNGHT, aka the collab project between beatmakers Lunice and Hudson Mohawke. This musical marriage takes Mohawke’s maximized repertoire and Lunice’s minimalistic approach to electronic dance music and combines it into something otherworldly.

Taken from their eponymous EP, “Goooo” is a bombastic track that requires some serious headphone or speaker-blasting. Right from the start, you are taken into a world of solid drum beats and sick bass productions that will either make you want to burst out in dance or break something with your fist.

That said, I’m thinking it’s time to wave adios to dubstep and give a warm whatup to trip-hop trap music. My guess is that it’s coming fast, and it’s coming harder than ever.

Baauer – Harlem Shake

As part of Diplo’s Mad Decent label and their new free imprint Jeffree’s, Brooklyn heavy-hitter Baauer has taken the label’s popular fusion of aggressive bass beats and electronic dance music to make this deliciously catchy track titled “Harlem Shake.”

This track dropped a couple months back but left a huge stamp in the trap-loving world, with designer Alexander Wang using “Harlem Shake” and “Yaow!” in his Spring/Summer 2013 fashion show. Seeing as how Wang has already shown us that he has supreme taste in music (his earlier campaigns featured Azealia Banks, Diplo, A$AP Rocky, Die Antwoord just to name a few), it’s clear that more people are starting to succumb to Baauer’s irresistible productions and hip hop steez.

Kimbra is one of the few female artists that was put on my music radar in 2012. From her career-launching collaboration with Gotye to the release of her first critically acclaimed album, this New Zealander has taken on a whole new world of fame and doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime soon.

Recently, Kimbra and Indaba Music created a contest with the task of taking her hit “Settle Down” and mixing it up a bit. While this remix by HYGWID isn’t the actual winner, I find the hot rework to be something worth mentioning. The upbeat nature of the original is indeed “Settled Down” with some downtempo beats and mellow dubstep – nothing obnoxious, just pure bass-thumping delight.

What's so good?

It’s about high time we featured another throwback song from the Garden State soundtrack. So far we’ve played The Shins’ “Caring Is Creepy” and “New Slang,” both songs that stand in stark contrast to the eargasm induced by “Let Go.”

Made up of Imogen Heap and Guy Sigsworth, Frou Frou is somewhat like The Postal Service: they only stuck together for one album, Details, and though they’ve threatened to release subsequent tracks / collaborate, not much has come of that.

Not that I’m losing much sleep over it. This song is timeless.

A little drum ‘n’ bass, anyone? S.P.Y.’s rework of “In The Waiting Line” by Zero 7 seamlessly melds fast-paced breakbeats with soothing trip-hop.

The original song was released by Zero 7 back in 2001, on their debut album Simple Things. But, you may recognize it from the 2004 film Garden State.

The band have released three albums since then, and are reportedly gearing up for a fifth studio release late this year / early next.

What's so good?

Remember Dan Croll? The Liverpool-based artist’s debut single, “From Nowhere,” sucker punched the blog-trolling hipster scene with a force unseen and unheard since Zane Lowe premiered “Sweater Weather.” That infectious piece of indie ear candy did wonders for The Neighbourhood, just as “From Nowhere” has bought Dan Croll the time needed to properly prep an album for 2013.

Considering all the buzz that song built, it was weird to see two “From Nowhere” remixes on Dan Croll’s SoundCloud going largely unnoticed. I’m not a huge fan of what Stealing Sheep did with the tune, but Baardsen’s rework is a great alternative to the original. It’s worth noting that Baardsen previously remixed Grimes’ ”Oblivion.” I don’t know much else about the producer(s)? at this point.

Big ups are in order for all parties involved on this delicious remix of The Peach Kings’ “Fisherman” by L.A.-based Woody, who is a self-described “producer, recording engineer and creative consultant.”

The California native teamed up with The Peach Kings to craft this remix for the first installment of a NSFW video campaign starring Jenna Haze. It’s probably not something your want your teacher, boss, or spouse to catch you watching. Or maybe it is. Whatever floats your freaky boat, Shufflers.

Apparently, Haze personally selected The Peach Kings for this video. And here I was thinking that former porn stars had bad taste in music. You learn something new every day. I also learned that Woody has an instrumental album out called Limes, and that right now is as good a time as ever to make some Handsome Moves.

What's so good?

Allow me to informally introduce you to Happa., a 15-year-old producer shaking up the U.K. house scene. Happa. recently dropped by Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC Radio 1 show for an epic guest mix that is well worth 21 minutes of your life. It was a great showcase for the Leeds, GB-native. Happa. has an unprecedented knack (in my humble opinion) for turning sparse, sprawling beats in to something much more. Kudos to Happa. for shining a funky light on some of the dark crevices of the future garage and techno caverns.

I don’t dole out cool points often, but any Shuffler who listens to “Secrets” shall be awarded 20 of them. Happa. has only a small following, but that is bound to change sooner rather than later.

He just dropped off 3 free downloads on his SoundCloud. My advice would be to listen, share, and then listen some more. It’s working wonders for me.

What's so good?

Drop The Lime (aka Luca Venezia) will be drowning us with some raw bass on June 29 at Webster Hall in NYC, and being a bass-addict myself, I could not be happier. Luckily I had the chance to enjoy a nice cocktail and a chat with Luca about his upcoming DJ set this Friday.

Dressed in his signature black attire, with slicked back hair and suspenders, Luca walked up to me at Pegu Bar and checked out my shoes. After seeing the “what-the-hell?” look on my face, he goes to explain that he saw a chick wearing Crocs as he entered and thought it may have been me. We both just laughed.

The Trouble & Bass founder has some big projects in the works, including a tour coming up to hit the masses with a slap of rockabilly electro bass in the face! The tour for his album Enter The Night (dropping July 3 via Ultra Music) is starting in August and goes until September, ending at the big Trouble & Bass party at Webster Hall.

We get our drinks, a Manhattan for him and a bay leaf martini for me, and after realizing that we probably ran into each other at a few parties back in the day, we have a few laughs as we reminisce.

He spent some time in the mid to late 90s bouncing around the underground party (rave) scene in New York City. He fondly recalls the care Kid606 showed himself as a young artist by signing him to Tigerbeat6 Label and touring in Germany with him. He remembers boasting to his parents, “Mom and Dad, I got signed, so, umm, I am going to be famous.” And he was right.

So, where did Drop The Lime come from?
Back in the day when bookings happened over the phone and not email, I was going to do a set at Pianos as Walk The Line. When I showed up, I saw the listing and the fliers said Drop The Lime.

What was it like for you, when you first look up and see the whole venue moving because of you, the sound you were releasing?
No drug nor drunkenness can replace the energy you feel when the whole crowd is infected with your beat, when you are up there, screaming and throwing their hands in the air…you are giving them what they want and they in turn give you what you want. For me, the only thing that can come close to it is sex.

“But with the right person,” I say, and he agrees, “Right, yeah ok, with the right person. When you have that connection, its amazing and you kind of go somewhere else. Music has always been very sexual that way to me, when its like, you leave reality and you are lost in the moment.”

I know what you mean, for me it is when I am at a show that I can just leave reality in a way and melt into the music. Music and sex does have its parallels. Does the high continue for you after the show?
That is what happens — there have been times when I play a gig and I am throwing up after, like feeling crazy… so vulnerable. I do not want anyone talking to me. You put so much into it sometimes, you are just open, and I think it’s important to be open. That is kind of why I never let go of performance, of singing and talking with the crowd. It’s very easy to lose that organic feel, the human interaction with electronic music since it is so synthetic.

Swapping the energy with the crowd, do you feed off of it?
People shouting and yelling “Play this! Play that!” I love that, I love that camaraderie. It is a feeling I have never let go of, from my early rock’n’roll/punk days.

Is this what we are going to see at Webster Hall?
Oh I will, I will definitely sing and run around the stage. [Big smile across his face]

Will you play the N**gas in Paris remix you recently did? I have that on repeat!
Haha, yeah, I will play that. Definitely!

Until the tour starts, and the album drops on July 3, what are you up to this summer?
I am having a lot of fun DJing at some smaller venues too, I call the set [since people like to have names] drop-a-billy, which is bass edits with classic rockabilly songs. One dude straight up broke his leg at one party, he was dancing so hard me slipped and fell.

What are you listening to now?
Trailer Park Tracys, Jail Bait, Flosstradamus, and I love groups like Purity Ring. They have this electronic mix with Goth and her lyrics are pure poetry.

What is your next step in performing, how will you evolve?
Not losing touch with the music, having the show be more about theatrics, and having that organic feeling mixed with the lasers and the strobes. Combining a path that is more of a story than just being blasted in the face with lights continuously…and he is working on that.

We briefly talk about his admiration for burlesque shows both in NYC and a particularly good one at The Hole in Madrid. He recently did an EP with The Bloody Beetroots (!!!!) which I am dying to get my hands on and another surprise which we are keeping our lips sealed about, for now.

Being the good Brazilian that I am, I ask if he has ever had a ‘Surra de Bunda’ and he admits, he has not, so I guess now I spiked his curiosity to go to Brazil. Add some baile funk sounds to his repertoire, why not?

What's so good?

Mike Mago, founder of the Dutch label BMKLTSCH RCRDS, is a producer of music keen on the philosophy “it’s not about genre, it’s about taste.” Recently featured on The Magician’s Magic Tape Twenty-Two, it’s safe to say Mago is living up to his philosophy.

Anyone born in the 80s or earlier knows the 1990 hit “The Power” by Snap quite well. The infiltrating hook makes it more than hard to deny. Flashing forward to the present day, Mago features vocal samples from the famous hit to reinvigorate the over 20-year-old cut (has it really been that long?).

Focusing on the hook, Mago slightly speeds up the beat with a repetitive yet impactful beat, bringing power to every and any dance extravaganza – 90s themed or not. With steady drums and beats throughout, the last decade of the 20th century seem to rear its crop top, overall-wearing head again, if only for one night.

What's so good?

Damnit, I just love Diplo. If my relentless Diplo posts aren’t any indication of my reverence, this track should justify any uncertainties. Off his highly anticipated album, Express Yourself, due to release June 12 via his own Mad Decent label, “Set it Off” is a dancehall banger that will most definitely get your booty movin’.

The filthy beats and flogging vocals creates a familiar climactic grind of genre-bending musical endearment that we’ve all grown to know and love from this Mississippi native. While it’s no surprise that this track is of lewd dance party caliber, it’s only one part of what is anticipated to be a mindfuck of an album.

What's so good?

Elite Gymnastics probably have the best Last.fm page ever. To paraphrase: “THESE GUYS KILL. SOME CHILL AS FUCK BEATS WITH SOME BALLER SAMPLES. THEY ALSO DO WICKED AS FUCK REMIXES.”

Lord knows if those are their own words, but the Minneapolis duo have indeed killed it with their new single “Life / Trap.” Exploding with drum&bass rhythms, they appear to be channeling a little bit of Broken Social Scene. No doubt, this is chill as fuck.

The song comes off the release Ruin 4, which you can grab via Acéphale.
