I thought I’d immediately miss Amber Coffman’s voice on this rework of “Get Free” with Chronixx’s vocals layered over, and probably I do, but this track reminds me of how powerful the production is on its own.

The vibrant tremble of Coffman’s voice surprisingly paired with the “Get Free” beat is what made the original track so brilliant. On the other hand, Chronixx’s soothing reggae rhythm fits in seamlessly with the backdrop on “Where I Come From,” and it’s as if you can hear Coffman’s voice in the distance.

Maybe it would have been beautiful to hear them all together, but the rework brings a soothing, sensual groove on its own — and when Chronixx pushes his voice, it’s magic.

We haven’t had any Twitter fans harassing M.I.A recently, so I decided to bring her back for a bit.

Actually, Annie Starlight did this remix about a year ago, so I’m bringing them both back! In fact, this remix sounds more M.I.A then the original. Maybe it’s because it’s 2013, and I’m expecting some future beats (yes this is from a year back, but it sounds fresh), but everything bangs a little harder. Simultaneously, a spaceship shoots synth down the line and electronica glows in the background, a nice contrast and complement respectively to M.I.A’s laidback performance style.

Honestly, I like this much better than “aTENtion.” I can’t tell you anything about the winner here, except that Annie Starlight makes “stardust power music” and you can follow her on Facebook here and SoundCloud here.

It’s a long description to decipher, but it all becomes quite clear when you listen to “Figure Numatic.” Jazzy vocals and horn wrap around musical funk before the MC breaks through. Almost three minutes in, one song spills into another as Nubiya Brandon professes, “My brain is an ammo clip,” foreshadowing the long-lasting experimental groove to follow.

Before writing about Oregon-based Medium Troy, I ran a Hype Machine search see who else had already showed the band some love. Here’s what the search results revealed. Props to Jason for posting the dopeness that is Medium Troy’s “Feel Good Inc” remix.

Props are also in order for the rascally community that is r/trees. It’s where I first read that Medium Troy apparently won High Times’ Best Band for a picture they submitted. They’ve also received support from High Times several times in the past for their music, which makes sense when you take a few minutes to absorb these ridiculous vibes.

Medium Troy recently released several gems on SoundCloud that I highly recommend you check out if you fancy “When I Get Low.” I’m not for dub much these days, but damn these dudes can craft a funky beat. Uptokes to that.

With a name like La Boum Fatale, you know this’ll be a wicked cool band. And how’s this for their description? “La Boum Fatale built up fragile worlds somewhere between melancholy and euphoria.” Pretty intriguing…

La Boum Fatale is Antonio de Spirt and Levente Pavelka, two Hamburg-based artists that make dance music worthy of international recognition. Combining house, garage and dubstep into dense arrangements, they also throw in sweet field recordings for a well-balanced diet of IDM.

Of the typical electronica European assortment, “AAA” builds up slowly, sort of minimal-esque yet good enough for a night out. There’s a little break in the middle to give you a respite, then it builds back up again. I’m really into this extended version of the track — there are synths in all directions, with the beats pounding at length. “AAA” comes off the album Damwild, which dropped last year on Berlin label Sinnbus and features other dope tracks, like “PassMiss.”

Don’t miss the dreamlike music video on Vimeo, in which a camera follows someone walking around a party and then trips you out by going backwards. It’s brilliantly paired to this sort of musical atmosphere, and perfectly captures that feeling of walking around in a semi-euphoric, hazy-eyed state in which things feel like they’re coming at you from all angles. As they accurately joke, “The obvious may be allowed: What we have here is triple A. Made to last. Guaranteed. Shake on it!” Agreed – can’t wait to see what’s next from these talented media engineers.

I’m really digging this groove dub track off Jason Burns’ new EP. It’s got that distinct Burns stamp - auto-tuned female voice, punctuated synth, the clicks and clacks. This is a master electronic craft wrapped up in less than five minutes.

The Pacific Northwest producer is always making good stuff; I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since we featured his anthem “Back to You.” Guess time flies when there’s great music.

I’m a little late to the game on this one — this actually dropped back in early December. It’s on a sweet electronic EP featuring a collaboration with Brent Still Life, another Cleveland native who’s making music now in Salem/Boston. I love his tagline: “I make music for clubs as well as couches.” I can’t decide what this track suits better… maybe both. While this track is of the typical garage variety, others, like “Lightning,” are more of the R&B style.

Thom Yorke remixing Major Lazer!? If this doesn’t elicit at least a twinge of arousal, you might need to rethink your musical orientation. This remix is a bit of a wet dream for me. And if Martin Luther King taught us anything about dreams, it’s that they should be shared.

So in proclamation of its awesomeness, and in preparation for Major Lazer’s upcoming album Free The Universe due to drop February of next year, as well as  Amok, Thom Yorke’s new solo project (under the monicker Atom’s For Peace) slated for release around the same time, it seemed appropriate and topical to feature a Thom Yorke remix of a Major Lazer classic.

Major Lazer featured this remix on their 2010 EP Lazers Never Die. If you missed it the first time around, there’s no time like the present to dust off this track and strap on your daggering shoes. If you’re unfamiliar with daggering this instructional video should probably be on your required viewing list. (Trust me it’s important to your life. Watch it.)

From its crackling synth intro to its breathy, operatic, auto-tuned bassline, Thom York treats this track right, tricking out “Jump Up” with his own brand of electro-swagger. This remix strikes a lasciviously satisfying balance between the brooding glitchy drones we’ve come to expect from Radiohead’s prolific Thom Yorke, and the booty-poppin, quasi-intelligible, Jamaican dancehall dub that makes Major Lazer so damn fun to listen to. Brilliant in its execution, this remix deserves a listen for fans of either artist.

After being sampled on indie hip-hop duo Chiddy Bang’s “Mind Your Manners” and garnering international attention for 2011 single “Nights Like This,” their sophomore Iconic EP dropped this October 2012 via Big Beat (Skrillex’s label).

For “I Love It,” the ladies collaborated with rising experimental pop star and song-writer Charlie XCX to produce an infectious, girl power anthem. While the original track manages to turn the dial up from start to finish, fellow Swede and acclaimed DJ/producer Style of Eye brings in the bass and drops it, maintaining the ethos of his high-energy electro house.

Things look pretty good in Detroit today. In two totally related events, the Tigers made it to the ALCS and Coyote Clean Up and Jamaican Queens teamed up for a remix of JQ’s “Kids Get Away.”

Ok, I’m being facetious, but this hard hitting dub grime is the perfect anthem to feeling like a bad-ass– it’s what any Detroit Tiger would want to listen to today.

This is the first release from CCU in a hot minute, so maybe this means that the reclusive Coyote is about to come out of hiding. Either that, or he’s just being the good little spirit animal that he’s said to be and guiding the Jamaican Queens to greatness.

Loving this track from San Francisco’s own Kastle. A nice example of how the bassmaker can put out tracks somewhere between ambient and house, it’s a drum-heavy beat piece accompanied to that typical “haunting” lyrical sample.

Fair to say S.F. future garage has arrived; Kastle’s just kicked off his own record label that’ll feature the likes of Cosmic Revenge, Maribou State and Jason Burns. With the organization of this niche set of electronic musicians, you can be sure Symbols is a name you’ll be hearing a lot more often.

Personally, I’m stoked. Track after track, Kastle has delivered a fresh style that makes me want to listen on repeat. “Only You” is only one example of how Kastle is doing excellent things right now. Start with the music video “Stay Forever” for further proof.

You know why people are addicted to burritos? Because they’re fucking delicious. But more than that, they’re a mix of everything you love from the Mexican culinary world, wrapped with one greasy tortilla. One bite, and you’re hooked for life.

Same thing with lovestep. Take this track for example. One listen, and you’ll be desperate for more. Lovestep is a mix between deep house, minimal and glitch, with stems from dub and inspiration from R&B. It’s like the cooler stepbrother to UK garage that goes by many names: soulstep, future garage, chillstep, dubwave, chillwave – the list goes on. Whatever you want to call it though, it’s a fresh take on dub, often featuring dark, rhythmic basslines that remove the uber popular heavy distortion and instead include sexy R&B vocal samples.

This featured track from producer ViLLΛGE is a great embodiment of how lovestep makes your heart skip. Somewhere between glitch and dub, it delivers a pulsating beat with repetitive claps that ring in your ears, even when the song’s ended. It’s got this melancholic undertone running through it that reminds you a tad of Mimosa’s “Days Go By” remix, except the beats are a lot more chilled out.

ViLLΛGE, aka Vali Dragomir, is killing it right now. The Romanian dude has lovestep down to a T. It won’t take long listening to his tracks to get a sense of what I mean – check out the strong beat in “Wanna Tell You” paired to Chris Brown’s “Yo” for further insight. The lovestep genre proves it really is all about the bassline when you want good music to bop your head to.

Right now, ViLLΛGE just has a few tracks floating around the web, so we’ll just have to sit tight for a full release. However, this reworking by WrongTom sees the track brought more directly into realms Caribbean, with a dub re-working, transforming the track into a summer jam.

Roots Manuva’s works have always been inflected with Jamaican sounds – even the track in question, “Buff Nuff” was produced on a distinctly Jamaican vibe by Toddla T.

However, this reworking by WrongTom sees the track brought more directly into realms Caribbean, with a dub re-working, transforming the track into a summer jam.

In fact, WrongTom has reworked numerous Roots tracks into an album of summer jams, titled Duppy Writer, which is out now!

Although we’re big fans of both Nas and Massive Attack, a collaboration between the pair is not something we’d have expected.

We caught Massive Attack’s take over at The Quietus, who described it as:

While we haven’t yet had our fill from musical seductress Lana Del Rey, our appetite for the debut single “Video Games” is satisfied by singer and producer Ferdinand Sarnitz, better known as Left Boy. What’s most likely a drum machine matched with his revamped (and completely addictive) chorus, he samples beats from something similar to an actual video game, which makes it difficult to take this track off repeat. It was released nearly 4 months ago, but we’re still listening.

Splitting time between New York and his native country of Austria, Left Boy works as his own hype-man and entrepreneur, releasing tracks for free download on his site while promoting songs via Twitter and Facebook. He oozes a distilled concentration in his performances that forces his fans to listen, despite the pitch-y moments and somewhat juvenile lyrics. But even the naivety in his words add a playful addition to a song that is already trying to be darker than it realistically ever will be. I can appreciate these capering choices in any artist, especially one that is just starting to gain a swelling following thanks to his credibility and whiz-kid promotions. He hasn’t been “discovered” yet, but something about his underground developments are attracting some 30,000 Facebook fans and counting.

The most obvious attraction I have to this remix is how Left Boy so coolly diminishes these preconceived ideas (or falsehoods) we have concerning relationships — and yes, I understand I just said his lyrics were slightly inexperienced; admittedly, so am I. But there is a ferociousness behind his conveyance that unmasks an explicit amorality that seems to have gripped our generation. Modern dating consists of drunk hookups, sex first before an actual dinner and a movie, Internet pokes and messages, texts that somehow speak louder than palpable, verbal conversations…need I say more? Modern-day dating is like a fucking video game — trying to find loopholes as we sit and wait for the actual, real thing to earn enough points to prove it’s worth.

Before you know it, labels will be hunting down Left Boy trying to get a piece of this one-man show. He’s got a taste of fame and guaranteed he’ll ride it out until Game Over.

When I saw that Major Lazer had teamed up with Amber Coffman of The Dirty Projectors, I had absolutely no idea what to expect.

The side project of Diplo and Switch, I normally associate Major Lazer with a much more jarring, upbeat electronic tempo. But this track is thoroughly easy to and enjoyable to listen to.
