Snakehips found a bottle of breezy 90s R&B that washed up ashore and added their own gracious bit of future soul.

This self-edit of “On & On” reminds me that it’s about time to put together another throwback playlist, but not before dancing in my room to this a few too many times. George Maple’s voice glows purposefully alongside rays of synth and melts exterior consciousness. That’s what soul is supposed to do though, isn’t it? The beat classically breaks down and keeps the groove flowing even more freely than the original.

What's so good?

LEVI is a French-born producer who recently relocated to NYC to take over the electronic dance music scene. In the leading track off his debut OBLIGATION EP, LEVI has taken Daft Punk’s sensibilities and channeled Kavinski’s dark brooding atmosphere to create “X-Ing.”

This powerful electro-ballad begins with a thumping pulse before dropping off into a melodic chord progression of soft keys, airy synths, and shredded guitar riffs that gets your heart racing and your feet tapping. The energy on this track slowly builds up before releasing into a fireball of rhythm, replete with the necessary peaks, dips, and plateaus to ensure you don’t enter a catatonic state. N.Y. resident DJ Anubus takes this edit of the classic 1998 hit “Like It Like That” by A Tribe Called Quest and delivers it in a funky new way that is both unexpected and refreshing. With this track, Anubus artfully combines a mixture of funk, soul, hip-hop, and peppers in grooves that make you wanna get on the dance floor. Leave it to this guy to throw down “some smooth ass moombah to get people to rub their nasty bits on each other.” Cheers to that!

The L.A. DJ duo Classixx are about to release their debut album after previously getting a ton of accolades for remix work they did on songs by such artists as Phoenix, Yacht, and their New York counterparts Holy Ghost!

After a quick listen to a few tracks, I’d have to say it’s a very cool record — lots of slick production and electronic grooves. It might be one that doesn’t really connect as a whole, but the tracks can be put on in the background and it makes for a good time.

Since learning that Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner was a reluctant solo artist on last years’ Golden Age of Apocalypse, I was expecting the next solo effort from the bass prodigy to come a few years down the line. I was wrong. Thundercat returns this June with Apocalypse, produced by Brainfeeder general Flying Lotus.

After a difficult year that included the loss of close friend and collaborator Austin Peralta, I would not have guessed a Thundercat album would sound like Apocalypse. The energy on Apocalypse makes its predecessor sound a bit meek. Thundercat is singing with more confidence, his voice has more of a presence in the mix and his personality shines through stronger than before in his lyrics and performance. Many of the songs are incredibly celebratory and the initial single, “Heartbreaks + Setbacks,” was downright poppy.

With musicians of Thundercat and Lotus’ pedigree, it would be inaccurate to call their first LP as a snoozer, but in the continuum they are creating the sound they presented on Golden Age was definitely in its infancy and is growing up on Apocalypse. The funk is fuller and the grooves are deeper. This is still music for music junkies, for the jazz heads and the beat aficionados, but you don’t need to be any of the previous to dig it.

Yesterday, the Internet won. We all were utterly flabbergasted when we caught wind of the leaked full stream of Daft Punk’s newest album, Random Access Memories. For me, it will be one of those days that will forever be burned in my memory as to where I was, what I was doing, and the feeling I felt as I listened to Random Access Memories all the way through — a week early. Despite the early reviews, and all the critics, I was, and still am, in awe.

One track that stuck out for me was “Lose Yourself To Dance,” featuring Pharrell Williams. If you watched the Collaborator videos, you probably heard that Daft Punk was intentionally aiming to do something different, something timeless, something that reached back in time to capture the simple essence of live instrumentation, and with “Lose Yourself to Dance” they have encompassed just that — a super funky and warm track that is something amazing.

The only other thing left to say is “press play, and again, and again.”

I know we are all going crazy with Daft Punk madness as we anxiously await the release of Random Access Memories. Whether it’s scrutinizing the authenticity of releases or waiting for surprise appearances at musical festivals, we are all caught up in the hype. And why not? It’s been a long time coming.

This excitement has also carried over to producers and other musicians (See Daughter’s cover of “Get Lucky“ or Drop Out Orchestra’s edit).

Today we are premiering another take on “Get Lucky” by our favorite Dallas producer, Neo-Safari. Neo-Safari has hopped in his DeLorean and taken “Get Lucky” straight back to 1997, making the track sound like it could have been a B-side from Homework. He minimized the vocals of Pharrell, and filled the track with some 70s-infused electric guitar care of some samples taken from Vanderway’s edit — all while managing to make the track hit just a little bit harder than the original. This is definitely a winner.

So until Random Access Memories drops, enjoy this time warp of a remix. Long live French house!

The Solarris remix of James Blake’s “Retrograde” we featured recently went down a treat, so we thought we’d share his version of How To Dress Well’s “& It Was You.”

In a similar vein to “Retrograde,” the melancholic atmosphere of the original is worked into something else, with a disco styled bassline and upped tempo leading to something that falls firmly in the “soulful dance music” camp.

Like the James Blake one, Solarris, joined by Xaao, is once again being generous and giving this away for free over at his Soundcloud.

Given the direction a lot of house music has been moving in lately, it makes sense to refer to one of the original fathers of funk. That’s exactly what the Dutch duo has done, creating a track that sits between deep house and nu disco, bringing the 70s classic up to contemporary standards.

Although we’re already massive fans of Rhye’s original sound, we’re also mighty keen on this remix from Detroit legend Maurice Fulton, who flips the band’s sound on its head.

Instead of the usual sensual sounds, Rhye become dark and sexy. The track opens with a “make love to me” vocal before the bassline kicks in and it gets even funkier.

I’ve been posting a lot of remixes lately, but I really can’t help it when there are so many talented remix artists out there. This time, Aussie duo Phonatics steps up to the plate to take on Dragonette’s latest single “My Legs” in what was a remix competition set up by Dragonette herself. The duo describe themselves as “One Tall Dude and One Shorter Dude,” which is an interesting little bio if I do say so myself.

This is probably the standout remix by far, and I’m definitely not just saying that because they’re Australian. The duo have slowed the track down and flooded it with loads of funk and with the addition of some disco guitar lines and jazz piano. The whole arrangement complements Dragonette’s signature vocals perfectly, and I’m sure that she’s enjoying the remix just as much as I am.

The French are pushing some of the best music these days.

With that said, I was VERY disappointed in the attendance for Birdy Nam Nam’s set at Coachella this year. Perhaps, because they were in the 1:40pm time slot on the second day while Coachella babies were nursing their dignity that they lost during the day before? Who knows.

What I do know is that Birdy Nam Nam is a four-piece electronic DJ crew from Paris, France that is mostly known for their live turntable sets. Throughout their well-accomplished career they have won multiple awards that include the DMC Technics 2002 World TEAM Championships. Their album that got me hooked was the most recent Defient Order EP, which was released on Skillex’s OWSLA label at the beginning of 2013. Also worth noting is they were involved with producing the banging A$AP Rocky track “Wild For The Night.”

The subject track, “Defiant Order,” starts off with a very prominent bass line that eventually gets layered with some super grungy electronic loops. It’s one of those tracks that infiltrates through your ear drums and into your body, and gets you groovin’.

By the way, also check out the Breakbot remix of “Defiant Order” — it’s amazing. Honestly, I was having a hard time not posting the remix over the original. But I’ll leave it up to you to decide which is better.

!!! (pronounced “Chk Chk Chk”) releases their newest album, Thr!!!er, very soon. It’s a bold title, but this album has !!! going over the top with their funky sound. From the opening notes, you can tell they’re trying to make people dance. The rhythms and guitar work on this album do remind you of those early 80s grooves; there’s even some grooves reminiscent of the album Thriller. So, there is some sort of connection between the two — it seems as if they have channeled that kind of dance-laden energy from Michael Jackson and created one of their best records.

This tune, “Slyd,” is by far the most danceable track of the album. The heavy back-beat and percussion fit quite snugly in between the bass lines, and the vocals range from a female sampled to a deep, bass-heavy male lead. It makes for some funky moments that you’ll be sure to enjoy!

Hopefully the sun is starting to make its way out wherever you’re reading from, and this infectious piece of nu-disco from Italian producer Nicholas ought to suit the mood perfectly.

Although the track was originally released in 2010 as part of Super Sound Single Volume 2, it has only just come to our attention, but we’re glad it has. Combining a nostalgic hook with a funky bassline, it’s the perfect recipe for summertime.

Janelle Monáe is a hero of mine. Transgressed against for her sexuality by a cast of characters in a deeply patriarchal music genre, Monáe never shied away from the scene. Instead, she got the last laugh by releasing the now classic album, The ArchAndroid. On that LP, Monáe re-imagined herself cyborgean, transcending the human body and traditional identities to become a new kind of being, albeit one that struggled with emotion.

It was an album that came into my life as I needed to instill courage in myself to deal with a similar set of issues as Monáe, and it meant the world to me. In fact, “Cold War” is still my 7th favorite song of all time — yeah, I said all time.

“Q.U.E.E.N,” from the upcoming Electric Lady project, finds Monáe as defiant as ever and willing to finally (at least in part) engage with some of those struggles around her queer identity (among other things). The song was inspired by conversations that she continues to have with humanist goddess Erykah Badu, who is prominently featured. Overall, it comes across as anthemic as Monáe has ever been.

“Q.U.E.E.N.” is the perfect “fuck you” track to the close minded haters that litter the American public sphere. I’ll be honest y’all: I didn’t know whether to cry or dance or both the first time I heard the song. It’s just so beautiful for me…I missed Ms. Monáe so much.

Prepare to pinch your nostrils tightly, because this just reeks of funk.

Tuxedo, who we pretty much know nothing about, has an unreal little EP on their SoundCloud page. It consists of three songs that are sure to fire up some stanky-legs, hip-thrusts, and maybe even a worm or two at your next after hours party. Trust me, I can attest from experience.

When jamming out to “Do It,” it’s hard not to hear the similarities to Chromeo, Mayer Hawthorne, Hall and Oates, and even a little JT. I realize likening an unknown to legends is a bit of a stretch, and c’mon, they only have 273 Twitter followers! But honestly, who cares? Sometimes the music is all that matters, and Tuxedo can consider me hooked.

On Brooklyn producer Dre Skull’s new track, “First Time,” Megan James steps out behind the veil of Purity Ring to prove once again that the haunting wistfulness of her voice can stand strong outside the auto-tuned aesthetic of the band. James’ delectable vocals over Dre Skull’s dark pop arrangements act like a clarion call to the weak parts of your heart, fortifying them for new journeys.

Including James and the Purity Ring legacy that swirls around her is a smart move. Just her appearance on a track like this provides a multifaceted look at the yearning of lyrics, like, “You will never cease from exploring.” James may hold the beacon of light on the song’s trajectory, but following behind her you see her knees are dripping with blood from crawling through broken glass to grab that torch. James’ history and vocal talents give the track an earned authenticity.

It’s just too bad Popcaan had to come along. Ugh, his reggaeton/Jamaican english is totally unintelligible, and it’s a testament to the power of Dre Skull/James’ collab (and just how much their lyrics speak to me) that I’m willing to go into the happy place in my head for 20 seconds and pretend Popcaan isn’t on the track. I’m certain all future remixes will wipe him clean out of the song.

I’ve heard buzz lately that techno is experiencing some sort of revival. With all the new artists turning up lately, it does seem techno is on the up and up. I can’t speak for the rest of the world, but I do know that here in Detroit, techno never left — most of us just stopped paying attention. So let’s dial in.

Currently expanding my understanding of music is a crew of beatmakers doing it a little more D.I.Y than the rest. These dudes are the builders and the tinkers; making electronic music as much for the sound as for the physical pleasure of building their instruments. You may never know how much they geek out to weird gadgets and strange sonics, you might not even be able to see them past their wall of synthesizers or gear littered tables. It’s a mysterious world these guys dwell in, and I can’t help but find it intriguing.

Along with Kyle Hall, we have a whole slew of emerging artists rockin the weird beat (Lord Scrummage), the jazzy synths (Slufter), live-mixing and holding up the fort for techno-inspired electronic wizardry.

Joining the ranks is Dakota Bones, aka Ben Christensen. Hardly new to the craft, Christensen’s style is best described as high-tech soul; the elements involved are just that. “Here Come the Lions” is just a small taste of his talents, a tiny insight into the vast scope of his productions. I suggest you dive into his SoundCloud and start to explore just what handcrafted sound it all about.

Christensen sets off on a mini tour starting July 2013, so keep up on his whereabouts on his website – and if you get a chance to catch a performance, expect to be mystified.

It’s a happy deep house dance Friday. Kickin’ off the vibe is Skream’s remix of Rudimental’s “Hell Could Freeze” featuring Angel Haze. We’ve posted some shimmering nu-disco, some rap-rave nu-disco, but I believe this is a first for dirty nu-disco. The track has that old-school thriller bouncing bass, while pulsating to a peak with Angel Haze’s future verses as an extra bonus.

Skream also works his new nu-disco magic into Duke Dumont ‘s addictive “Need U (100%)” featuring A*M*E, which necessitates throwing a roller skate rave in Miami under glow-in-the-dark-stars. I feel like finding a scrunchie and pulling out my favorite childhood t-shirt which had a neon screen print of “hot hot hot” running down the front.

To make matters funkier, Hannes Fischer brings a slick, deep house remix of Jamiroquai’s “Too Young Too Die.” It’s a perfect pairing of breezy bird-song and dance.

Wild Heron keeps up the playful groove with “Magnum.” I had to bring the producer back for today’s collection because this track needs more listens. I have a love connection with Bad Panda Records and it’s because of gems such as this. The facetious bass endlessly charms the dancefloor.

To close out Friday Five, I’d like to introduce Anushka from Giles Peterson’s Brownswood label. The duo of Max Wheeler and Victoria Port seeps up from UK’s distinct, future bass life-line, while producing a rhythmic and soulful sound of their own on title-track “Yes Guess.” Look forward to their EP, debuting this April 15, 2013.

What's so good?

Well, hello there! Oliver Nelson has used a bit of french funk flare to turn Janelle Monáe’s “Tightrope” into one hell of a dancy track.

The original song was released in 2010 as the first single off Janelle’s album The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III). Premiered on Pitchfork, the track was notable for the inclusion of Outkast’s Big Boi, a huge endorsement for Ms. Monáe, who at the time was still establishing her brand.

Flash forward 3 years to Oliver Nelson’s remix, and i think we’ve got a revitalized and hella catchy single here.

We just can’t seem to get enough of Bodhi at the moment. First their Justin Timberlake remix. Now this.

The latest artist to receive the Bodhi remix treatment is Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch, and the results were described by The Line of Best Fit as “a dubby, deep house version of Marky Mark’s classic, ‘Good Vibrations.’ Twinkling with jazzy bass lines and rippling piano samples worthy of the dancefloor.”

What's so good?

SNAKEHIPS is someone I’ve been overtly coveting for the last month or so. If I had been any better at actually reading the site I blog for, I would have known about this UK gem a while ago, apparently. Bad Lizzie.

“Miss U Always” is their latest single, released in tandem with their remix of Bondax’s “Gold.” There’s a classic R&B feel to the production, something to vibe to on your feet or at work. Chill and glitchy, it’s just damn good.

There’s not much information I could dig up about SNAKEHIPS other than she/he/they is/are from the UK. What I do know, however, is that their sound is pretty bodacious. If you’re digging this track, I highly recommend this mix.
