The release of Mount Kimbie’s much anticipated second album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth is nearly upon us, and the duo have now leaked another track from the album.

“You Took Your Time” features BBC Sound of 2013 nominee King Krule, who’s contribution to the track is questionable — his spoken word ramblings are not quite rapping and not quite singing, laying somewhere in between. Although we’re not particular fans of these vocals, it’s interesting to see Mount Kimbie take their work in a new direction.

We’re still waiting for Cold Spring Fault Less Youth with baited breath, but hopefully without the unnecessary guest appearances.

Electro pop and hip-hop? I think it’s fair to say that this relationship is somewhat unexplored, so it excites me to provide this track to our curated digital library.

Rockie Fresh is a name we’ve seen just a couple times in this community of tunes. The Maybach Music Group rapper just dropped his first project after the extremely stellar Electric Highway, titled The Birthday Tape. Only six songs in its entirety, it’s a short ride, but “Nothin Wrong With That” is heavy in the rotation right now, so I wanted to share it with you.

Like many past Rockie joints, the beat is on point. Those familiar with the band Carousel will pick up the sample immediately (psst, it’s their song “Games”). I haven’t found out who is behind the production yet, but seriously, kudos bro.

The lazy, auto-tune vocals don’t always work, but I’m feeling them on this one. Lyrics are something along the lines of smoking herb, drinking booze, partying, getting it in, and relationship problems that can stem from all of that. It’s nothing we haven’t heard before, but it’s fitting for the sound of the song. I’m diggin’ it and hope those of you making the discovery are bumping your head in electro-hop enjoyment.

Chicago’s Chance The Rapper has built a buzz for himself in the past 16 months with his deft lyricism and melodic inflections. His latest tape, Acid Rap, seems to have cemented him as an up-and-coming rapper with commercial promise. I’ve yet to do my due diligence on young Chance but even a surface skim shows substance. It’s nice to see a young cat making an attempt at being creative without rehashing the past completely.

“Paranoia,” a bonus track on Acid Rap, is a collaboration with beat-scene wonderkid Nosaj Thing — and it’s pretty amazing. I hope the rest of the tape is as good. Over a brooding, slumping beat Chance starts and stops, going from an exhausted sing-song to a feverish urgency and back. It’s also really interesting to listen to the track in the context of a young person from Chicago rapping about his hometown, a city that has been plagued with extreme levels of youth violence for years.

It’s come out in interviews and articles that Chance’s latest tape was pretty self explanatory: many of the raps where recorded on acid. He goes a bit further to explain that his process would sometimes include freestyling on acid as a way to establish the skeleton of his tracks before fine-tuning them. I love this but I hope it doesn’t lead shittier rappers to think they can snort heroin and make some dope tracks.

A track featuring Active Child? Yes please. When I saw this new track by Gilbere Forte come through the wire featuring Active Child, it was a no-brainer to give this one a listen.

Even though we first saw Gilbere Forte appear last year with his single “Pray,” this is my first glimpse of the Philly hip-hop artist. I must say, I am a fan of Mr. Forte at this point.

“Nolita” is slower hip-hop ballad that features the hard-to-miss harp sounds of Active Child and the impeccable vocals of Pat Grossi. Gilbere’s flows on the new track are equally praiseworthy.

“Nolita” is the second single from Forte’s upcoming project, Pray, which is due out May 15, 2013.

I love me a good Distinction remix, so naturally, when I came across this reworked version of Danny Brown’s “Grown Up,” I felt compelled to share.

Distinction is a UK producer that has, time and time again, served up some seriously slick mixes. This thumper is no exception.

On Miguel’s “Do You…” he asks, “Do you like drugs?” but it’s clearly a deceptive chorus, trapping a drug song under a love song. Cashmere Cat might have had a problem with that.

Since “Mirror Maru,” I’ve been open about my instant attraction to Cashmere Cat, and this remix fans the flame. After a bubblegum melody run and a sizzling duet between Miguel’s charming inflections and the hiss of his supposed prey, Cashmere Cat interrupts and ensures that this is a track about a different kind of love.

What's so good?

“Two Worlds” is a bold and explorative track that tests the limits of underground pop, fuzzing it up with hip-hop, trip-hop, wavy dreams and introspective lyrics. Their music sounds like one big eternal transformation, but whatever it is they’re growing into, it does sound like Phantasmagoria’s getting more comfortable in their skin.

With nonstop gigs and a new album, DAYZE, due out summer 2013, the likable Detroit duo has been keeping busy. This year they’ve broke enough ground to land a spot on the Beatport stage during Movement– Detroit’s primo techno festival.

What's so good?

These three are on the verge of exploding the scene with British Afro-dub blues — they’re seriously something special.

Benin City is London-based Theo Buckingham, Tom Leaper, and Joshua Idehen. An eclectic band named after a Nigerian capital, their verse is persuasive, their drums powerful and their sax energizing. This is hip-hop rich with rock’n'roll, with all the originality of James Blake or radicalness of WU LYF when each respectively burst onto the blogosphere.

It’s no surprise the Huffington Post called them “one of the UK’s most exciting new bands” and people are tweeting things like “Genuinely the best song I’ve heard all year.” I’m 100% on board with that. The repeated rhythm in “My Love” should be enough to make anyone swoon into admiration.

I’m sure their debut, Fires In The Park, will wreak havoc — perhaps even literally starting fires in parks like London Fields. We’ll see. Until then, you can download this track, with its remixes, on their website. Don’t miss the lo-fi handheld music video by Hackney-based artist Charlie Behrens. Some bewitching visuals along Regent’s Canal.

There is nothing better than showing up to work, turning on your computer, checking your SoundCloud stream, and finding a brand new Clams Casino track. And when the track is a collaboration with MF DOOM, you know it’s going to be a good day.

The track is called “Bookfiend,” and it’s a super laid-back beat thrown down as only Clams Casino can do. It’s filled with ambient soundscapes with a hip-hop soul, with some soulful rhymes from MF DOOM mixed in — the perfect pair. The track has a bit of a jazz feel to it with its mellowness and the way DOOM’s voice melds with beat. I certainly hope we’ll see some more of these two working together because this definitely works.

If you’re anything like me, then “Bookfiend” might be the perfect way to start off your Monday, nice and slow.

West London producers Tyde (who are already responsible for a remix of Bastille’s “Pompeii”) have now taken to re-working the latest single from the London-based To Kill A King. The five-piece typically known for their chilled out nu-folk vibes recently finished a support slot on the Bastille UK tour following the release of their debut album, Cannibals With Cutlery.

After a revamp of the band’s previous single “Cold Skin,” Tyde’s recent remix of “Funeral” transforms the track — comparable to likes of Admiral Fallow and Frightened Rabbit in its original form — to a bass-driven electronic mix with a tasty vocal overlay.

Birdy Nam Nam – Defiant Order

The French are pushing some of the best music these days.

With that said, I was VERY disappointed in the attendance for Birdy Nam Nam’s set at Coachella this year. Perhaps, because they were in the 1:40pm time slot on the second day while Coachella babies were nursing their dignity that they lost during the day before? Who knows.

What I do know is that Birdy Nam Nam is a four-piece electronic DJ crew from Paris, France that is mostly known for their live turntable sets. Throughout their well-accomplished career they have won multiple awards that include the DMC Technics 2002 World TEAM Championships. Their album that got me hooked was the most recent Defient Order EP, which was released on Skillex’s OWSLA label at the beginning of 2013. Also worth noting is they were involved with producing the banging A$AP Rocky track “Wild For The Night.”

The subject track, “Defiant Order,” starts off with a very prominent bass line that eventually gets layered with some super grungy electronic loops. It’s one of those tracks that infiltrates through your ear drums and into your body, and gets you groovin’.

By the way, also check out the Breakbot remix of “Defiant Order” — it’s amazing. Honestly, I was having a hard time not posting the remix over the original. But I’ll leave it up to you to decide which is better.

San Francisco is a city that does not disappoint on the dynamic range of artists it puts out yearly.

Adding himself to this long list is artist Benjamin Falik. Going by Julia Lewis, an instant eye-catch, he is rapidly prolific and a rising beat maker/producer from this great City by the Bay. With ease throughout any particular and given track, Falik demonstrates his ability to play with sound, creating a vast histogram of musical styles. Julia Lewis takes the listener on an auditory journey that can evoke some serious dancing to the subtle slow clap. Regardless, it makes you listen and want to move.

As if his music making wasn’t impressive enough, Benjamin also heads the creative vision of all things Julia Lewis, including creating his graphic designs/album art work and recently playing a major role in the creative conceptual process of Julia Lewis’ first music video, “Tell Me Everything You Are,” which drops today.

Artists have increasingly become more well-rounded and versed in many areas; and Falik is showing signs of a true “Renaissance Artist,” if you will. A very new and fresh act to follow. Loving and looking forward to more things Julia Lewis.

YungSa†an (aka Trevor Wilson) knows how to make a trap beat bounce. He’s the “middle child” of the M|O|D collective, alongside artists like Lil Texas, C.Z., Trap Arnold, and ReWrote. He’s also the newest addition to the admirable crew over at Soulection. If you were at Coachella, you may have seen him around. They say he killed it at the JBL Tent.

I’m really digging the trapstyle, with a touch of dark hip-hop, chopped up vocals, and synths that snake across claps that seemingly last for days. Luckily for you, this song is available for free download. I’ve been blasting it on repeat for the last hour and am already in trouble with a few coworkers seated nearby.

We look forward to checking out his Soulection debut later this year. Check out more trap goodness with tracks like “Hypergloss.”

You may know Balthazar Getty as an actor, but what you wouldn’t know is that his real passion is music. Getty’s fascination for producing and mixing started in his late teens, and he finally decided to put his musical ambition in high gear.

So, he created his own label, PURPLEHAUS, and armed with just a Pro Tools rig, his DIY debut album SOLARDRIVE was birthed in three weeks. He recorded/produced/co-wrote the self titled album with the help of friends like Kevin Hicks, Ozomatli, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Asdru Sierra, Mother Tongue bassist David Gould, and Rain Phoenix (Joaquin’s sister). He said, “Like it’s my time, in a way, and I want to share what I’m doing with like-minded people,” when asked about branching out in music.

SOLARDRIVE was created with the dream that you can bring all different types of creative angles together to shape a new sound. There are eight songs that pay homage to Getty’s love for different musical sounds that he grew up loving: 90s NYC rap, electronica, and nitty gritty blues.

The first single, ” No Drama,” features his childhood friend Kevin Hicks rapping. Even though the song is short and sweet at just under two minutes, it makes you want to keep on listening/repeating. The full album drops April 23; go get yourself some rad SOLARDRIVE tunes, because you will be rocked.

IO – I Wasted My Time

A little while back, I got a heads up about IO through Dan Solomito. I was previously unaware of this Nigerian R&B artist, but the first track I was exposed to, “I Wasted My Time,” showed promise. For those of us who are not vehemently opposed to music in the vein of Maxwell but think someone like The Weeknd takes things a bit too overboard, IO seems to strike a good balance.

Also, he’s the grandson of the late great Nigerian percussionist Babatunde Olatunji, and that’s pretty rad. Stereogum premiered “I Wasted My Time” and have a bit more to say:

“I/O is the music project of Ayo Olatunji, a solo artist whose R&B-informed sound sticks its toes into the static of Weeknd-like musical textures, but a sound free of that artist’s narcissism and nihilism. “I Wasted My Time,” a single from I/O’s imminent Isolated mixtape, shows off an attractive warmth, and for all of its subtlety and laid-back atmosphere, “I Wasted My Time” signals a bright arrival for Olatunji.”

Back in March, I hyped a Ciara rework by Rhode Island producer The Range in anticipation of his forthcoming Seneca EP. Well, Seneca is officially up for sale and stream on Bandcamp, which means it’s time to dive into the release and share one of my favorite tracks at the moment.

“Greg Maddux Change Up” has this incredible vibe — not too far off from what producers like Keyboard Kid are creating on the other side of the country. Large up to The Range for making such great use of vocal samples. They dominate the track without taking away from the beat. “Greg Maddux Change Up” goes big on the bass and percussion, and that is something we could all use more of these days.

The Range is working towards his full length album, which is expected to arrive later this year. Enjoy Seneca, and prepare yourselves for the range of sounds still to come (couldn’t help myself).

I don’t even bother reviewing some Australian acts – Tame Impala, Temper Trap, etc. – not because I don’t like them, just because they’re usually snapped up by one of the other Staff Writers straight away. Perth producer Ta-ku has quickly developed into one of these acts, so I was surprised to notice one of his latest remixes hadn’t graced Indie Shuffle yet.

On this occasion, the prolific producer has taken on Melbourne electro-pop band Clubfeet’s latest single “Everything You Wanted.” In typical Ta-ku form, he’s completely transformed it, turning a slick pop track into what is routinely known as a banger.

Everything this man touches at the moment seems to turn to gold, and he’s solidified himself as one of Australia’s top beatmakers (if not the best). If you haven’t yet jumped on the Ta-ku bandwagon, check out his SoundCloud.

What's so good?

Overgrown is already proving to be a bit of a bust for me. Outside the vaunted ”Retrograde,” which could make an asexual person’s loins ignite, nothing besides “Every Day I Ran” has excited me — and its a bonus track, go figure.

“Take a Fall for Me,” for instance, with its co-dependent lyrics, really skeeved me out: “What will become of me, if I can’t show my love to thee?” I don’t know, man, you’re still an individual person — don’t sacrifice personal agency for five minutes of pop bliss.

But “Every Day I Ran” is like a mea culpa between me and James Blake. His beautiful sampling of Big Boi‘s “Royal Flush” focuses in on a part of that track’s righteously, infamous anti-war tirade (points there). But when paired with Blake’s production, Big Boi’s sample makes the song function as a continuously running double entendre.

Blake’s track is about realizing the sins of disconnecting from affection, but setting the song’s emotional core to the Big Boi sample allows it to simultaneously lambaste Iran warmongering. It’s just a breathtaking, visionary piece of electronic music.

What's so good?

This past year at SXSW, Kendrick Lamar may have been the most talked about artist. Every second conversation seemed to go something along the lines of: “Did you see Kendrick’s show last night? Are you going to his secret show tomorrow night?” And of course the inevitable observation that “Kendrick is soooo short!”

Anywho, bottom line is that Kendrick has blazed a name for himself as one of the more original hip-hop artists out there. And naturally, with such success comes a flurry of remixes.

This one by Blood Diamonds just happens to be pretty darn good.

My first foray into Hudson Mohawke was a few years ago with his brilliant edit of Tweet / Missy Elliot’s “Oops.” From that track, I knew this young UK artist would be going places. Starting out at a very young age as DJ Itchy, I’m pretty sure we can all agree that he leveled up with his present moniker.

Busy of late with his TNGHT trap music duo project, this UK lad just released a single for free download in anticipation of Pleasure Principle weekend. Using nip-slipper Janet Jackson’s “Pleasure,” this track is what I’m going to term a light-hearted banger. Drums and a complex melody, heavy with synths, make this exactly the kind of ramp up you’d want pre-festival.

Zedd blew my ear drum out last weekend while at SXSW, so naturally I should give his music a break. Well, I can’t. The latest Keys N Krates remix of “Follow You Down” may just be why Zedd is sticking around my playlists.

Keys N Krates are a mash-up trio out of Toronto that blend electronic, hip-hop, and trap music into hard hitting and aggressive tracks. I’ll be honest here, I wasn’t a fan of trap music, but Keys N Krates may be the gateway drug into such. If it stops with Keys N Krates, I am totally content with that.

If you happen to head over to their SoundCloud and like more of their jams, don’t blame me for your addiction. And one last thing — check out the live jam session on YouTube of “Treat You Right.” Holy shit. If that doesn’t make you wan’t to see these guys live, then all hope is lost for ya.

Talk about a complete sonic transformation! Rearranging and remastering up-and-coming Sydney duo Ginger & The Ghost’s “One Type of Dark,” Ta-ku plays up the eeriness. By “adding some serious bite with his signature drum assault,” Ta-ku plays with the contrast of darks and lights and ups and downs in just three minutes time.

Ta-ku’s 2013 schedule is looking pretty promising as he catapults into the spotlight worldwide. Clocking up an uncountable number of releases for labels such as Brownswood and Project Mooncircle, his collaborations with the likes of Chet Faker and Hermitude have really caught our attention — and this track confirms our undivided attention.

“One Type of Dark” includes M.I.A-esque vocals with a trip-hop tricking beat that can be easily imagined in a night life scene, and lets be honest, just about any setting imaginable.

Devonté Hynes of the Solange/Blood Orange production fame has gotten together with London trio Mutya Keisha Siobhan for this supersonic reworking of Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools.”

A couple days back, Hynes tweeted a link to the SoundCloud saying that “the girls felt like having a bit of fun at the end of their last session.” No word on whether or not this track will appear on any upcoming MKS albums, but if Hynes has anything to do with the beat-making side of things, we’re definitely in for some hip-working, dance-infused goodness.
