What's so good?

I’ve covered Cull before — you know, those Australian rockers that sounded like if Tame Impala was finally able to chill and bliss the fuck out? (see: “I Thought We Was“ and “Good People Disappear.”) But this time they’ve really outdone themselves. This ain’t no ordinary dual single release, “Canker/If It Works” feels like the start of something much bigger than the band.

When I think of Australian rock, I see a genre looking way out and jumping across two ponds to a Eurocentric understanding of itself. But Australia isn’t Europe, and the more its music tries to emulate that scene, the more it will always be viewed as some kind of anomaly. I’ve always wondered what would happen if their music scene — much like what they are doing with their political identity — embraced their Asianness.

And that’s what “If It Works” does so damn well. Incorporating diversity of instrumentation like traditional oriental synths, mixed with vocal stylings that a band like From The Airport might take to the Seoul scene, “If It Works” looks out at the Indian Ocean with the same fierce determination that the cover art drawing has.

With “Canker/If It Works,” Cull shows they are ready to rumble as an inventive force of regional rock: eye markings, sweaty practices, and mind blowing tunes included.

Sometimes, when hearing a new song for the very first time, it will immediately stimulate and excite your nerves, similar to feeling the pheromones of a beautiful woman for the first time — well, almost.

Currently my favorite, and I hate labeling people as “favorite,” DJ crews out of France, C2c, has remixed a track from -M- called “Mojo.”

C2C’s remix of ”Mojo” is a super funky French electronic-rock jam that keeps my ears well stimulated. The track features crunchy guitar riffs incorporated with record scratching all backed by a fat bass line.

This remix will see many plays from me — I might even play it out, nah…

What's so good?

Cloudeater made their Indie Shuffle about a year ago with “The Dive,” an experimental rock record off of the band’s Sun and Sidearm LP. At the time, I wrote about how Cloudeater’s lead singer, Sam Dew, sounded a bit like Thom Yorke. Whether you agree with the Radiohead comparisons or not, I hope you find some time today to enjoy our premiere of Cloudeater’s new single, “Smog.”

“Smog” caught me off guard. This track is like a death march, with military-style drumming and these ominous synths that bellow up from deep underground. “And pretty soon I won’t feel at all,” Dew sings, seemingly resigned to the harsh realities of the life he’s chosen. Cliche or not, I can’t help but feel like I’m inhaling this track whenever I listen to it.

This past weekend was the anniversary of MCA’s death. The well-loved and respected one third of the Beastie Boys was not only a pioneer within the world of hip-hop, but his influence stretched across the musical soundscape. Along with his fun-loving compadres, the Beastie Boys changed the world of music and have forever left their stamp on the industry and pop culture. I can remember being in middle school and seeing the Beastie Boys music videos playing on MTV and thinking that nerdy white kids, like myself, could someday be cool.

One of my favorite of these videos was for their track “No Sleep ’til Brooklyn,” off of their smash hit album Licensed to Ill. It was definitely a track that I spent years screaming aloud to while driving around with my friends, listening to the album so loud that I have possibly lost a good deal of my hearing due to those crazy nights.

Apparently I’m not the only Beastie Boys fan, because the alt-country rockers from Vancouver, Virginia Leaves, reposted their take on “No Sleep ’til Brooklyn” on their Soundcloud page in honor of MCA. It kicks off the verse with some Americana-inspired acoustic guitar, but they really let the chorus rock, as could only be done with this song. All with a bit of southern rock flair. After all, Vancouver is in southern Canada.

It’s been almost a year since we’ve heard from Melbourne-based indie rock band World’s End Press. They were previously touring with Cut Copy in support of their Faithful EP, which featured the track “Second Day Uptown.” Some notable information: the track was recorded by the well-known Dan Whitford (Cut Copy) and mixed by Tony Hoffer (The Temper Trap, Phoenix, M83) — not bad company to have helping you out, right?

Today, they’re back, and again have surrounded themselves in good (great) company. World’s End Press have just wrapped up recording their full-length debut album that was produced by mastermind Tim Goldsworthy. Goldworthy’s pedigree spans from bands like Cut Copy, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Massive Attack, and Hercules & Love Affair — again, not too shabby!

You can immediately hear Goldsworthy’s grungy dance-punk influence in the new World’s End Press track “Deadbeat Sweetheart,” which takes you on a seven-minute romantic carpet ride to the dance floor. This track will surely catapult their career into a frenzy, if it hasn’t already.

Based on some info on their Facebook page, the band will be coming to the States this year to play a few shows with Cut Copy. Make sure to keep an eye out for their new album to drop as well as tour dates near you.

I’ve been holding off on reviewing this track because I wasn’t sure exactly what I would say; this is an edit of David Bowie after all. “Space Oddity” was released during the summer of ’69, therefore I’m not wise enough to be versed on the direct effects of its cultural presence. I’m unfortunately only sensitized to the ripples, but if this edit is any indication, I’ll take a ripple.

This rework comes from the duo of twodots in Paris and Gotschmann in Vienna. Twodots tells me that music is the form of communication that works the best between the two of them; it’s how they say, “I hope you are fine.” Understandably then, it always bothered Gotschmann that Major Tom doesn’t answer ground control, so the duo have decided to let him. (Note: I’m sure it’s partly due to the fact that Bowie was stoned watching Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.)

While the original begins grounded in acoustic reality, the edit elevates the introduction, surrounding the seemingly perfect pace of a fluttering heartbeat with measured anxiety. Bowie’s voice then provides some instant comfort, surely the reason why Major Tom responds. The rest of track gracefully retains the original magic of psychedelia, but leaves us with the sense that our astronaut lives on in a parallel universe.

Hailing from Bristol City, U.K., the melancholy electronic-rock band Seasfire is back with a brand new single, “Oh..Lucifer.” The last time we heard from this awesome up-and-coming band, they had just released their debut EP We Will Wake.

Well, it seems that Seasfire has picked up right where they left off, as “Oh..Lucifer” is another well-produced and enjoyable track, with groovy beats and melancholic vibes. Some songs are instantaneously catchy – this is one of them.

The new track will be available July 1, 2013 on Little Fan Records.

Last week, I took some time to absorb the good vibes and good weather in the musical city of Nashville, TN. There, I met a few friends who introduced me to a few more friends, and before I knew it, I was surrounded by a stunning variety of musical brilliance — Nashville is just that kind of city.

One of those geniuses is a dude named Jim Oblon. Now, I don’t know much about him other than the fact that he makes other guitar wizards weak in the knees, he tours with Paul Simon, jams every Tuesday at a rad place called Foobar, and is generally a cool dude. A friend of mine turned me on to Jim’s latest collaboration. It’s a stray for Oblon’s typical blues style, but strikingly reminiscent to one of my favorite 90′s bands, The Breeders; thus, I highly approve.

Story is, he made friends with a vocalist (who is probably gorgeous), they jammed, and pure musical sex came out. That sounds really raunchy, but with a name like Porno Cave, what more could I assume?

Anyway, I hope they make a few more tunes, because “Hearts” is quickly becoming my latest obsession. So, relish in this 90s girl rock glory with me and snag the track via iTunes. Enjoy!

In some alternate universe where the FIFA Football franchise had never existed, I would never have known who Portugal. The Man was. Luckily for me, I don’t live in that world, and I can share their second single, “Purple Yellow Red and Blue,” from their latest album, Evil Friends.

Since 2004, this Portland four-piece have been churning out record after record, yet they don’t seem to miss a beat on this latest single. On “Purple Yellow Red and Blue,” they’ve taken the opportunity to showcase their versatility with a more electronically infused production. I mean, it still has that good honest rock feel to it with signature falsetto vocals, but it is very reminiscent of a STRFKR track.

Evil Friends (produced by Danger Mouse) is out June 4, 2013.

Video Game Soundtrack: Injustice, Ft. AWOLNATION, Minus the Bear + More

Some of my favorite memories of being a kid revolve around games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II — memorizing special moves, fatalities, and the all important blood code (A, B, A, C, A, B, B). There was no better feeling than making a friend feel foolish as you pummeled them across the screen, proving that you were the superior gamer. NetherRealm Studios looks to recreate these feelings of glory with their newest release, Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Injustice: Gods Among Us gives gamers the opportunity to take the fighting premise to another level as they get to control some of their favorite characters from the DC universe, including fighters like Superman, Batman, and Lex Luthor, just to name a few. This is a dream for many a comic book nerd who grew imagining themselves as various super heroes or their counterpart villains.

The soundtrack to the game was also released this week, and features some great tracks to mash buttons too, including tracks from Minus the Bear, AWOLNATION, and Portugal. the Man. Check out some of the highlights below as you get ready to master your favorite DC character.

Empire of the Sun sounding hopeful? Gone are the days of “not wanting to talk” (oh Standing On the Shore, how you have fed my poor soul over the years). In some ways, hopeful might be an understatement–they are full-throatedly pursuing life. Are you ready to use the dance floor by your window to shimmy your way to “opening the freedom inside you”?

Well, I am, even if that means embracing the band’s new sound. On “Alive,” Empire of the Sun have adopted a bit of the Greg Kurstin model of synths found in the bombastically wonderful reboot of Tegan and Sara, mixed in with some Ellie Goulding-esque tug-at-the-heart-strings production. It’s a future sound replete with scintillating electronic riffs and angelic bridges that swell the heart to gigantic proportions.

Alan Wilkis and Joywave are back at it, collaborating on a new track titled “Old-Fashioned Girl.” At this rate, they’d probably be well off to get together and form a band (oh wait…).

So, given that the duo released their last single “The Stroke Of Return” together, why not also release this song as Big Data?

Turns out that “Old-Fashioned Girl” predates the aforementioned track, and was actually the inspiration behind their collaboration. The song is set to be released as part of Alan Wilkis’ PRINTS series, a series of collaborative singles that Alan started releasing in 2011. To date, this series has included a pretty impressive lineup of vocalists: The KickDrums, Lyrics Born, White Hinterland, Childish Gambino, and now Daniel Armbruster of Joywave. On top of that, there have been remixes from YELLE, RJD2, The Hood Internet, and more.

Bottom line: Alan Wilkis is pretty darn serious about music.

Nope, you’re not listening to Electric Guest or Broken Bells. But, I can’t blame you if you’ve confused Max Frost with the Danger Mouse-produced bands.

Turns out Max is a solo act hailing from Austin. So far he’s released four tracks on Soundcloud, the majority of which have a sort-of R&B / funk feel — in fact, the contrast between the former three and this single “White Lies” is like night and day.

Here’s hoping Max Frost continues down the Danger Mouse path!

Carousel have been working hard to perfect their electro-pop sound, as evidenced by this new track titled “Another Day.” The result is easy to digest, not unlike the two other tracks we’ve featured, “Stay Awake” and “Open Road.”

No word yet on whether this is set to be part of an album or EP, but it fits pretty well with their back catalog of work.

On that note, I’m going suitcase shopping. Moving to Europe in 3 days!

Brooklyn-based indie outfit Bowmont previously came to my attention a few weeks back with the track “Ruphmiup,” and has since been on my radar. Bowmont can easily be described as an indie rock band that efficiently uses ambient electronic sounds to create a warm poppy sound to chill to. A comment from their Tumblr page says it best, “When indie rock kissed electronic.”

Their new track “Look Closely” was recently shared over on their SoundCloud page, and much like “Ruphmiup,” the simplistic sound instantly brings you in for a smooth ride.

If you like what you hear, go get The Euphorian Age EP that is currently available on iTunes.

Joywave – London

Roughly two years ago, Joywave snuck their way into my inbox with a mixtape titled 77777. On it was a collection of songs sampling artists like Miike Snow and Beach House. But they weren’t exactly remixes — moreso covers. It was amazing, and I listened to it over and over.

So imagine my excitement when last week, they asked if I’d be up for premiering the first track off their new mixtape, 88888. “Who are you sampling?!?!” I eagerly asked. “We’re not really doing that this time” was the response. Oh. Bummer.

Fortunately my “disappointment” was stifled as soon as I hit play on the track that they had offered. “London” retains all of the amazing elements of songs on their prior mixtape, while showing tell-tail signs of a band evolving. The bassline in particular is a bit of a standout: it’s strongly reminiscent of Caribou’s “Odessa,” but the overlaying vocals and instrumentation avoid the sporadic and disconnected nature associated with Caribou’s version.

Overall, we’re excited to hear the full mixtape when it releases in Spring. For now, you can download London via Soundcloud

Empire Of The Sun – Standing on The Shore

More than four years have passed since Empire of the Sun released their breakout debut album Walking On A Dream. Toward the end of 2011 frontman Luke Steele hinted that they were working on a new album, but alas, nothing has surfaced to date.

So, here’s a little reminder of what we’ve been missing: “Standing On The Shore,” the opening track for the album. It has some ups and downs — overall not as strong as “We Are The People” or “Walking On A Dream” — but still stands out as a great intro track. Whenever I hear it, I find myself instantly pumped to listen to the rest of the album.

Harts – The Music

Melbourne youngster Darren Hart (Harts) makes music most people wouldn’t even attempt. Drawing on influences from countless eras – “60s rock, 70s funk and disco, 80s glam, 90s grunge to the dance and indie pop of today” – he’s developed an incredible sound. His demos were stumbled across by the Mars Volta’s Lars Stalfors, who ended up mixing his upcoming EP, Offtime (out March 1).

Also including earlier release “All to Real,” the EP will highlight current single “The Music.” A great indication of the multi-instrumentalist’s musical prowess, everything about this track is spot on. From Hart’s brazen vocals, to the dazzling guitar riffs and carefully assembled synth lines, this is the work of a genius. As much as I don’t like comparing people to artists of the magnitude of Prince, the similarities are undeniable.

There is so much talent here, and Harts is definitely an act to keep a watchful eye on in light of his upcoming EP release. The sky is the limit.

Rat & Co – One Uno Ein

What's so good?

For those who follow my posts, you won’t be surprised when I admit that I’ve got a major thing for Melbourne band Rat & Co. After reviewing their first three releases, their debut album (which can be streamed in full here) One (壱) Uno (壹) Ein was released on Sunday, and I’ve hardly listened to anything else since.

The Rat & Co. project started out as a way for the band’s leader, Josh Delaney, to overcome a particularly difficult time. His music was written all over the world, from Austin to Berlin, and then back at his family farm in South Melbourne. Ideas and influences began to take off with time, especially when the band started to grow in size (now sitting comfortably at four members). The results have completely overwhelmed my already lofty expectations.

What’s most brilliant about this album is the way it flows, with Delaney’s fellow collaborator Kaia McCarty-Smith confirming “it was created to be a 40 minute listening experience that takes you on a journey.” I find that a lot of acts try to pull this affect off, but not many manage this level of success.

Although it’s meant to be listened to from start to finish, there are, of course, highlights to keep an eye out for. The previously released “Vision” and “Seawind” slot perfectly into the album, sandwiching the mellow (and perhaps my favorite track) “8 Bit Death.” It’s a spacey composition, with Delaney’s hymn-like vocals only adding to the incredible layered effects the band provides. Final track “Dark Jam” was created as a homage to Boards of Canada, while “Austin Chime” has more of that slightly-worldly Tycho feel to it. The album’s fourth single is the conveniently named “Fourth Sun,” one of the more upbeat and sunny tracks on the album, again highlighting the band’s ability to create incredible layered soundscapes.

Indie Shuffle is privileged to be hosting Rat & Co. as part of their album tour at the upcoming installment of INDIE SHUFFLE PRESENTS (in Sydney on March 2, 2013). What's so good?

We’re based in San Francisco, but the majority of our readers live outside the United States. Hell, I even grew up in Africa! So choosing which version of English to use isn’t necessarily straight forward, but ultimately we forge ahead with the US spelling of English.

The good news for Atlas Genius is that there’s nothing we can do about the word “Centred” in their song title: it’s going to be spelled the Aussie way, and that’s the right way, dammit.

“Centred On You” is the latest single by the band, and we’re fortunate enough to be the first to reveal it to listeners. That’s actually a pretty nice honor — we’ve been huge fans of the band for quite some time, covering practically every single one of their singles.

So, why now? Turns out the band is gearing up for the release of their debut album When It Was Now, which will be available February 19th. Given the material we’ve heard to date, we’re thinking this’ll be a good one. Pre-order it here.

What's so good?

Soft Bullets didn’t email me, and I didn’t find them on another blog. Nah, found them while watching a skateboard video on reddit. I can’t even remember the video but…the song jumped out.

I started to do some research, and quickly discovered that they hadn’t really been “discovered” yet. Sure they’ve got a splattering of social followers, but things are relatively quiet in the blogosphere. So, here goes!

Soft Bullets are sort of like Postal Service in that there are two members who live very far apart (Christopher Wall is in the UK, while Dan Capaldi is in the US). They’ve been going at it since 2011, and recently released an EP titled Hyperreality. “Posterity” was unveiled more recently, but you can still stream the EP on Soundcloud.

What's so good?

You might recall that we started covering Atlas Genius way back in May of 2012. So, it’s hard to believe that they are only just now gearing up for their debut full-length album.

The upside to that, of course, is that the band just released a new single titled “If So,” which follows up prior singles “Back Seat,” “Trojans,” and “Symptoms.” With four songs, that basically means we have enough material on our hands to call it an EP — so it’s exciting to think another 10 tracks are coming our way.

PVT – Vertigo

Sydney’s PVT (formerly Pivot) are gearing up to release their fourth album Homosapien on February 8. Leading up to that release they’re giving their fans an opportunity to listen to their new material prior to the release date.

Taking a page out of RAC’s book, they’ll will be premiering one track per day on a number of blogs worldwide – with Indie Shuffle lucky enough to be able to bring you the album’s third single “Vertigo” (following “Nightfall” and “Shiver”).

I’m of the opinion that this is the best track off the album (maybe I’m just biased). While still uniquely PVT, band founder and vocalist Richard Pike claims that “Vertigo” is “the closest thing we’ve ever written to an RnB ballad” – and I tend to agree.

Pike’s deep, yearning vocals are complimented perfectly with sharp percussion and celestial synth arrangements. It’s got touches of Prince (and the contemporary Prince – Twin Shadow) through it, while still maintaining that eerie character that PVT is synonymous with.

There aren’t many bands that can clearly re-create their make-up again and again while still maintaining their foundation. PVT is one of the rare few.

After mixing the masterpiece that was Hunting Grounds’ “Flaws“ last year (thank you, Jason Grishkoff, for turning me onto that one) and securing a place in my top 30 tracks last year, I was really looking forward to the directions Gold Fields would take. We’ve covered their previous single, “Dark Again,” but it wasn’t until this track that some of the magic of that remix returned.

Gold Fields capture the singularity of introspective turmoil that comes in the moments after a break-up so damn well. Through the use of inventive synths and arrangements, they let the listener feel every step and crawl out of the despair that sparked the relationship ending. There are no villains in a Gold Fields’ love song, and their ability to excel in protean wistfulness is what drives me back to the band.

I don’t know if this is purposeful yet — and I’m a little saddened at how much it still surprises me — but one of my favorite things about Gold Fields is how queer-friendly their tracks are. Usually I have to find gender-neutral songs or those sung by women, because, you know, singing in my room to a track that uses ‘girl’ feels disingenuous.

This is the second track Gold Fields has touched which uses a “he/he” gender dynamic, and it’s fucking glorious to have. That may seem like a small thing to some people, but when you spend your days inundated by heteronormative songs that don’t match your reality, it really isn’t.

Give them some love at their SoundCloud and find out for yourself why they were one of MTV’s 13 bands to watch in 2013.

Com Truise always puts me in a weird headspace. He’s easily one of my favorite producers, and you can tell a great one by their willingness to leave open space in a song (see 3:26 on this track). But what I love most about him is the bizarre facets of my personality that his music unlocks in me.

A few notes of one his tracks and its like the (figurative) straight-jacketed hipster that lives inside my brain is having a rave all by himself, mosh pitting with imaginary characters with glo-sticks coming out his eyes. But I love that kid inside me — that kid knows how to party even when he’s at his lowest.

Though I feel with his recent remixes, namely the darkly dreamy take on Foster The People’s “Helena Beat“ and now this amazing version of Maroon 5′s “One More Night,” Com Truise is allowing me to imagine what it’d be like if that crazy hipster was allowed to flourish in the modern club scene. His dance tracks, exemplified by “One More Night,” aren’t afraid to languish in the lascivious nature of club beats that leave you beating your better self back to bed with a dangerous stranger.

They are perfect soundtracks to the nights you let yourself go out to the club and throw caution to the wind. In my case, that meant going out in San Francisco and waking up in Palm Springs, and fuck knows how I got there. Ah, the marker of a great night out.
