What's so good?

Saturday is a great day for some downtempo trip-hop. So when Luxembourg-based duo Monphona popped up my radar today, it didn’t take much to convince me they deserved a spot as Song of the Day.

A collaboration between DJ and Producer Philippe Schirrer and singer-songwriter Claudine Muno, Monophona recently released their first album The Spy, which you can listen to and purchase on Bandcamp. The highlight for me has to be this gentle track “Give Up,” which strikes a beautiful balance between electronic and acoustic elements.

If you’re curious to hear more, there’s also a great downtempo cover of Morrisey’s “Everyday Is Like Sunday.”

While not a new song, Bonobo decided to upload “Towers” to his Soundcloud today. If you’re a die-hard fan you’ll probably recognize this as the second-to-last track on his recently released The North Borders. But to me, it may as well be new!

Admittedly, I haven’t given his new album a thorough listen — certainly not frequent enough to have committed it to memory. Which is somewhat of a surprise given that his former albums still make their way into my headphones repeatedly.

At the end of the day, my best guess is that this track was uploaded as a reminder to fans that they should get their hands on the new album. If you fall into that category, here’s the link.

Not too long ago I stumbled upon Laura Mvula’s soulful track “Green Garden.” It’s an amazingly original and refreshing single, and rightfully earned the Song of the Day slot.

Since then, a number of folks have tried to remix the single (eg, Monsieur Adi), but honestly I don’t think anything can even begin to stand up to S O H N’s rendition.

He hasn’t just managed to take the track from upbeat soul to downtempo trip-hop. He’s also managed to throw a complete curve-ball at the 3-minute mark. He basically left me jaw-dropped on first listen.

This remix joins a number of “official” renditions that can be found on the Mvula Remixed Soundcloud.

It’s raining in San Francisco. Normally I’d say that’s not cool, but with a little Bonobo in the background, a gray day couldn’t be more welcome. Especially when it’s a brand new song!

“Cirrus” is the first track to be released off the UK-based producer’s upcoming album, The North Borders (available to pre-order now at bonobomusic.com via Ninjna Tune. The song is available for free download too, at that same link).

The song finds Bonobo pursuing the same sound that saw so much success on his prior four albums (the last one was Black Sands, released in 2010). And as noted above, that sound is absolutely perfect for the rain.

Sunday Night Chill: Tycho, Emancipator, Badun + More

Beethoven is quoted as saying, “Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.” This may not be true for all, but at least for me, music is a type of religion. Especially music that transports me — takes me someplace new, makes me think something different, or just makes me think, period.

When it comes down to it, the reason I enjoy compiling (and listening to!) Sunday Night Chill playlists is just that. The music slows my mind down enough so that I can enjoy the delicate balance of light and dark within each song, so that I can hear the nuances of electronica, so that I stop thinking all of my day-to-day thoughts and just enjoy the moment.

This week, I bring you five songs from various electronic artists. Put on your headphones, or turn up your speakers, and put your mind at rest.

You’re here for new music, right? And I’ve been posting a whole lot of indie pop lately, so it’s time I take a gamble and give you something you probably don’t recognize.

Tor is a Vancouver based artist who certainly falls in the same vein as Bonobo and/or Emancipator. He released his debut album Drum Therapy in December of last year via Loci Records, and it has quickly become one of my favorites (stream the full thing via Bandcamp).

So, it’s not the typical cup of tea for Song of the Day, but deal with it. This is great music!

What's so good?

I can comfortably assert that Emancipator is one of my favorite artists from the last three years. Since discovering his music, I think I’ve listened to Soon It Will Be Cold Enough (2006) and Safe In The Steep Cliffs (2010) about a hundred times each, mostly late at night while road tripping or riding the bus.

So when an email announcing his 3rd full-length album arrived in my inbox today, I nearly flipped my shit. Opening this single up on Soundcloud was like a kid unwrapping his Christmas presents — an experience many of you can relate to when it comes to new songs from your favorite artists.

“Minor Cause” is the first song off Dusk To Dawn, available on January 29th. To quote the press release:

Throughout ‘Minor Cause’ Appling’s beats and piano draw you forward, before Goldberg’s beautiful strings are introduced, raising the urgency and bringing the track to its crescendo. It’s a fitting lead single, illustrating the inimitable and ever-engaging blend of beat, harmony and melody that underpin Emancipator’s music.

How does that translate in real life? Well, it basically ends up with a track that’s clearly recognizable, and not necessarily breaking down any frontiers. I can’t say I’m disappointed about that, but I sure hope that some of his other singles take things in a crazy cool direction (whichever way that may be).

Flashback Friday! This seems like it’s starting to become “a thing.” Trust me, it’s not intentional. It’s just that bands aren’t really eager to release new music on Fridays.

This time I thought I’d feature a song off one of my favorite albums ever, Talkie Walkie (2004). It was a tossup between “Run” and “Universal Traveler,” but I settled on the latter for an interesting reason: the fact that I only just realized what the lyrics are.

You see, the most repeated phrase in the song is “Universal Traveler.” But, to the untrained ear, it sounds like “You need a soul traveler.” It’s possible that I’m the only one this happened to…but I doubt it.

Emancipator is by far one of my favorite downtempo / ambient artists to listen to. Both Soon It Will Be Cold Enough (2006) and Safe In The Steep Cliffs (2010) are in my heavy rotation on my phone, accompanying me on countless bus journeys.

So it goes without saying that when I saw Emancipator coming to San Francisco, I jumped at the chance to see him live. Frankly, I wasn’t so sure what to expect. I’d seen Bonobo at the same venue, and all he did was play a live DJ set. But that in and of itself was awesome, given the danceable nature of his tracks.

This is where I felt Emancipator’s set kinda fell short. It’s not his fault or anything — it’s just that as I mentioned above, this music tends to fill my “ambient” mood. And so watching it in a live setting surrounded by people who are just kinda watching (vs. any type of dancing)…well, it wasn’t exactly mind blowing for me. The live electric violin was a nice touch, but overall, I’m not sure I’ll be rushing out to see this again.

It was basically like listening to someone hit play on the best of their discography.

A Saturday throwback for today’s Song of the Day! This mashup was released by Emancipator some time ago, but has managed to keep my attention since. That’s probably because it features two of my favorite cloudy day artists: Emancipator and Jose Gonzalez.

And while I had at first been skeptical about throwing Missy Elliott in there, I think you’ll find (as I did) that it actually works quite well.

Radiohead needs no introduction, nor likely does the song “Codex,” off their album The King of Limbs. But you might rightfully be asking “who the hell remixed this? And isn’t their name awesome?!” Indeed, We Plants Are Happy Plants has one of the most fun band names I’ve seen in recent memory.

The Budapest-based Peter Bergmann has released two full-length albums to date, and is currently in the process of pulling together a third — to be dropped sometime in the first half of 2012. You can find out more by visiting his Facebook or Soundcloud.

It’s quite hard to go wrong with a Pretty Lights track, particularly when it’s available for free download.

“We Must Go On” is the first release of the year for the Colorado-based trip-hop artist Derek Vincent Smith. The song provides all the elements we’ve become familiar with from the artist: funk infused bass-lines, speckled with electronic loops and jumps.

One of the best artists that I’ve discovered in the last few years is Emancipator. His music won’t blow you away with thumping bass or shredding guitar solos. Rather, it’s an ambient trip hop in the vein of Bonobo and Boards of Canada — the perfect type of music to listen to when you want to chill out. You’ll have to excuse this remix of “Black Lake” from my prior description, though.

Yes, what we have here is indeed a remix of his own original song. “Black Lake” was first released as the second track of his 2010 album Safe In The Steep Cliffs. In 2011, he followed up with a Remixes album including 14 tracks from a variety of artist. Well, 13 technically. The 14th was this song, remixed by the man himself. Inception?

I don’t know how I’ve avoided Bonobo for so long, but if you’ve been doing the same I urge you to turn that around now!

Today I’m sharing 2010′s “We Could Forever,” taken from Bonobo’s critically acclaimed Black Sands. Bonobo joins a host of London-based talents with this release — making what could be seen as trip hop or maybe electronica, released on Ninja Tune.

This particular track calls to mind label mate Mr. Scruff, especially with its latin guitars and jazzy rhythms. Black Sands takes in a wide set of genres from across the electronic spectrum, from deep ambient through some dubstep and into the latin/jazz sound of this particular song.

With a riff this catchy, I’m surprised that this track hasn’t found its way onto a commercial yet! Does anyone at Apple read this? (Hint, hint.)

I saw Emancipator’s set in The Do Lab stage during Coachella, and it turned out to be one of my favorite performances. Of course there were plenty of great artists performing over the course of the weekend, but the vibe in the tent that night was what made the performance so special. There was plenty of room to move around, people were in good spirit, the lights on the stage looked great, and some laid-back dance grooves carried everyone to another level.

Emancipator will be releasing a new remix compilation called Remixes on June 21. As a preview, the Ooah remix for “First Snow” is being offered as a free download over on Emancipator’s BandCamp. You may recognize Ooah as one third of the electronic group The Glitch Mob, but Ooah likes to keep things slow and sexy for his solo project so this remix definitely carries that same vibe.

Emancipator – When I Go (Feat. Thao Nguyen)

What's so good?

I haven’t been able to stop listening to this song. It’s an early morning song. Or, if you want, a late-night song. Heck, it could happen any time of the day. It’s trip-hop, it’s ambient, it’s beautiful.

Emancipator has fully replaced Bonobo for me, whom I used to listen to whenever struck by the mood. But when a song like this comes along, it’s virtually impossible to beat in its category. Off the album Soon It Will Be Cold Enough, “When I Go” features Thao Nguyen of Thao + The Get Down Stay Down. She helps make the track, but doesn’t seal the deal. In the end, it’s Doug Appling a.k.a. Emancipator who steals the show, weaving the perfect landscape of music with which to compliment Thao.

Hands down, this is my favorite track of the month.

Pretty Lights – High School Art Class

When I saw Pretty Lights play at Outside Lands, I was surprised at how similar he sounded to Emancipator. I literally shouted to Indie Shuffle’s Taylor Fife that “This is just like Emancipator, but funkier!” Then this morning, I bumped into the song “High School Art Class”, and couldn’t resist but make it Song of the Day.

It’s no surprise to me that Derek Vincent Smith, better known as Pretty Lights, has supported DJ Shadow. It’s also no surprise that he’s a regular on the festival circuit. “High School Art Class” is the first track off his second EP, Spilling Over Every Side. What’s particularly notable about the EP (the second of three) is the notable track-length, and this opening track is no exception: clocking in at over 8 minutes, we sincerely hope it will keep you entertained here.

A friend suggested I check out Emancipator’s Soon It Will Be Cold Enough a few months back, but I put it on the back-burner until recently. While browsing my feeds, I came across a song from the album that really hit the spot. Emancipator or Douglas Appling’s chilled-back, trip hop beats are steadily growing on me. I may not be an expert on the trip hop scene, but producers like this are moving me in the right direction.

The song that I mentioned above, as you probably figured out, is First Snow. Like a lot of the music I listen to, this song isn’t just for listening fun but seems to have a deeper meaning (yes, even without words). Another aspect I like about Appling’s music is how he switches up the tone in the middle of the track – a good example is at 3:00 in First Snow – similar to what DJ Frane does. – Silence No Good

What's so good?

Chill out. Seriously. Put those legs up, get a cup of warm tea, and melt to the sounds of Emancipator’s new album, Safe in the Steep Cliffs. You will be greeted by “dense layers of choirs, horns, American folk instruments such as the banjo and mandolin, violin and some distinct Asian influences make for a playful but refined album built out of intricate tracks listeners can enjoy on as many levels as they want. Dance to it, chill out to it, immerse your mind in it. It really doesn’t matter.”

Emancipator rose to fame out of the blue, only playing his first live show (opening for Bonobo) in July of 2009. He’s toured with the likes of Bassnectar, drawn attention in Japan, and had one of his songs featured at the Beijing Olympics. The Olympics, of course, were well before his first live show, so just how popular is Emancipator? Well, his mashup of Sigur Ros and Mobb Deep for the song “Shook” managed to top Hypem’s “Best 50 Songs of 2007,” and continues, to this day, to draw attention. Check it out here:

‘Safe In The Steep Cliffs’ represents the tightest, most unique, most organic beats I’ve made in the last three years. This album has a new palette of sounds and samples from around the world, including more original recordings (guitar/violin/mandolin/banjo) and new guest artists including Japanese jazz musician Uyama Hiroto.
