EDM audiences from all the world have gravitated towards this West Philly native for music that will bang in the club and get their bodies moving. With several songs under his belt, Baauer has proven to us time and time again that he won’t forever be known for his one famous track – he’s prepared to show us that his relevancy is merited.

Taking to Disclosure’s “You & Me” featuring the vocal stylings of Eliza Doolittle could have been a tall order for most artists, but not this guy. We’ve seen what he’s done with AlunaGeorge’s “Attracting Flies,” and I’m in no way surprised that this track is on another level of awesomeness. He keeps things interesting with this mix and strays away from his trap-fueled aesthetic, making this piece full of steady beats and clever climaxes.

“A friendship between college girls is grander and more dramatic than any romance…”  This is especially true if the friendship has a great soundtrack.  Thankfully, Girls does.

HBO’s hit dramedy Girls just recently finished up its second season trying to live up to all of the hype built up by its hugely successful debut.  The season definitely had a darker feel; it dealt with some mental health and alcoholism issues.  But, being as Judd Apatow is the show’s executive producer, you knew there had to be some hilarity — specifically with instances like Hannah’s home-done haircut, trash dumping, and running.  And you’ve got to love Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) making a guest appearance on the show.

So while Season 2 was kind of polarizing — some loved it and some hated it — it did continue to feature great tunes from the world of indie music.  The show featured female artists like Tegan and Sara and their RAC-produced track, Solange, and Santigold; it should only be expected on a show that follows the life and times of four girls that the soundtrack would be filled with the top female artists, proving that perhaps friendships between college girls really is more exciting than any romance… at least as long as the music is concerned.

So, did you hear about this last night? CHVRCHES had MS MR‘s baby, and gave birth to it on Annie Halls’ BBC show in a gale force of bloody awesomeness. Granted, one could just say they remixed “Hurricane” and premiered it on the BBC, but what’s life without a bit of innuendo and double entendre?

Turns out this rework of “Hurricane” is amazeballs — which is saying a lot coming from someone so protective of the original that other attempts were insta-enemies to my ears.

You’d think the song would suffer from being socked in the face with a smattering of synths, but CHVRCHES take the track’s original sentiment — waking up from a deep slumber in your mind’s darkest places — and speed up the process until we’re a few steps into the future.

I’ve been posting a lot of remixes lately, but I really can’t help it when there are so many talented remix artists out there. This time, Aussie duo Phonatics steps up to the plate to take on Dragonette’s latest single “My Legs” in what was a remix competition set up by Dragonette herself. The duo describe themselves as “One Tall Dude and One Shorter Dude,” which is an interesting little bio if I do say so myself.

This is probably the standout remix by far, and I’m definitely not just saying that because they’re Australian. The duo have slowed the track down and flooded it with loads of funk and with the addition of some  disco guitar lines and jazz piano. The whole arrangement complements Dragonette’s signature vocals perfectly, and I’m sure that she’s enjoying the remix just as much as I am.

Hopefully sometime last year you caught the work of Stockholm’s extremely talented Taken By Trees (aka Victoria Bergsman). If you haven’t heard any of her solo work, you probably recognize her name from the song “Young Folks” where she sang along side Peter Bjorn and John.

Her third album, Other Worlds, was released last October, but a few days ago she released the video for the single “Only You” along with a nifty little remix done by Belief. Bombay Bicycle Club‘s “Always Like This“ is easily my favorite track by the band. There was a period in 2011 where I wouldn’t get out of bed each morning until I’d laid in the darkness and lip-synced the lyrics to myself like some mantra. I didn’t always believe that things wouldn’t “always be like this” but that was the entire point of my bizarre ritual and the raison d’etre of the song: you just have to convince others no matter what you really think.

BBC’s original never played the singer’s half-hearted attempts to convince the outside world as anything but, and part of its joy as a track was that just knew there was whole internal war inside the lyrics happening outside the melody of the song. HVOB’s (Her Voice Over Boys) cover as well as the masterful Oliver Koletzki remix take you directly to that interior mind-world.

HVOB’s vocals remind me of the hushed whispers of girding oneself against the sunshine shining through the blinds at dawn. The warm synths make the song’s foundation never lack a deep conviction towards healing, even as the vocals battle against the melancholy undertone. It’s a brilliant re-work all the way around.

So, Kitsune is working on a great compilation titled Kitsune America 2, and as part of it have managed to pull together three amazing up-and-comers: Jhameel, DWNTWN and Giraffage.

The combination looks unlikely on paper, but closer inspection weaves a pretty tight connection between the three. For starters, Jhameel and Robert of DWNTWN were roommates in San Francisco’s Bay Area. Which meant that when DWNTWN met Giraffage at the Kitsune America release party last summer, it didn’t take long for them to start thinking about working together!

Lana Del Rey’s “Young & Beautiful” captures the essence of everything she is. Her melancholic demeanor on this track boasts an alluring egocentric temperament that many people can immediately identify with.

While Del Rey’s form is gorgeously executed, this version, brought to us by French DJ Kulkid, takes the skeleton of the original and gives it an energetic breath of life. Sydney-based Jordan F has quickly developed into one of the most prolific and talented producers in Australia. As a member of the Rosso Corsa Collective (a group of artists that specialize in 80s-infused synth/chillwave), his sound could easily be likened to international talents like Com Truise or Neon Indian.

Aside from producing his own work, he’s become know for his unique 80s-synthesizer remakes of local artists, including Flume and Sun City. His latest reconstruction was of fellow Sydney-based indie pop trio Tokyo Denmark Sweden’s single, “When it Breaks.” He’s given the track an incredibly smooth synth layering, which works perfectly in tandem with the slightly pared-back original vocals. He promises 80s-dedicated music, and he sure doesn’t fail to deliver.

I’ve been a big fan of Magic Wands since their 2009 single, “Kiss Me Dead,” delighted me with its gloriously sunny DIY production (I know, how hipster of me). Along the way they’ve gained a few fans, including The xx, who remixed their thumping anthem “Warrior.”

At the time, they reminded me of a new generation The Raveonettes, but their sound has come a long way; since then, it’s morphed into an awesome amalgamation of Ladyhawke and Ladytron. On “Space,” from their debut LP Aloha Moon, Dexy Valentine’s ethereal vocals float over Michael Creange/WEEkid’s production and kick ass over a stellar constellation of lyrics.

“Space” is all about the mystery of how Valentine fell in love, settling on the belief that it must be happening in an alternate dimension, as surely it can’t be happening in this one. The warm incredulousness of the song coupled with the icy production creates a beautiful dichotomy that should make the single a hit.

Others will have their champions, but Lianne La Havas is one of the queens of contemporary R&B, in my opinion. Defiantly focused with an unerring commitment to her sound, La Havas’ music possesses the most seductive of features: an intelligence that splays her pained amusement of the world for all to see. Her Mercury-prize nominated debut, Is Your Love Big Enough?, ravaged my year-end best of list with songs like “Forget“ and “Elusive.”

On British producer fLako’s remix, “Elusive” heaves and sighs with warm synth work that amplifies the conversational feel of the song. “Elusive” already felt like an all too intimate glance into La Havas’ perception of herself, but fLako’s re-work gives the song’s lyrics the faintest of grim smiles onto the austerity of the original.

I appreciate that fLako didn’t alter the song’s core as an inventive piece of boudoir pop about the power of human connections (even when they end). Instead, if anything, he amplified the heady, drunken feeling that is true vulnerability.

I ain’t afraid to say it: I love me some Dido. Over the span of four albums she’s been committed to a singularity of vision and emotional purpose that flouts all traditional boundaries set for female artists. It’s a feat in a music industry that constantly seeks to silence women from expressing ‘ugly’ emotions that Dido’s never broken a sweat including them in each of her albums.

This Vince Clark remix of “End of Night” is a perfect example of that. It rumbles with dispassionate condescension over a lover too willfully careless to keep the beat of the emotional tango that was their relationship. Dido’s voice is righteous in its arctic delivery and Clark’s production skills match it intonation for intonation.

What’s genius about Clark’s version is the way around 4:00 in he fades into the song a sparse, sparkling space pop synth and then drops out all other instrumentation leaving the rawness of the song and Dido’s vocals to be exposed. It reveals and let’s hang the dark emotions for what they are, never silencing the beautiful ugliness in the track.

Charlie XCX is doing big things. She just released her True Romance album, and last weekend she unveiled this unexpected-yet-killer remix of “What I Like” featuring the lyrical flow of Detroit rapper Danny Brown.

If you’ve taken a peek at both versions, you won’t notice too much difference between them. The remix takes the beats and turns them up a bit, but when laid side by side, the rework stays decently true to the vibe of the original.

I don’t know about you, but I shamelessly love Danny Brown’s ferocious verses. He’s unconventional, yes, but when he throws down, I can’t help but whip out the gangster bitch inside me and dance. His rambunctious nature combined with Charli’s relaxed vocals create something that’s gritty and quite enjoyable.

I’ll be the first to admit it: I do not like Ellie Goulding. With this in mind, know that I consider this a truly massive tune out of Star Slinger’s sincerely talented hands from an exclusive Nike-sponsored Goulding remix album.

Ellie’s vocals are angelically sampled atop the light-hearted house beat resonating from every angle. This track inspires more than mere reckless abandon with its glitchy vocal samples, dense bass line, innocuously banging piano, and perfectly selected BPM. I’m certainly feeling this more dance/house track from Star Slinger, a producer who usually stays on the electronica, instrumental hip-hop side of life.

So let’s all quit our jobs and start a dance party, okay? Okay. See you there.

Here’s a killer Janet remix from SF-based producer Charlie Yin, a multi-instrumentalist who puts out sample-based R&B. This track is superb: slowed vocals with groovy beats served up just the way we like them. The claps around 1:54 will make your mouth water. Too delicious.

Last time we covered Giraffage was back in December, when he remixed The-Dream’s “Shawty is Da Shit.” Since then, he’s put out an excellent album on Bandcamp, called Needs. It has the typical electronic soul style, and if you dig this track, I promise you’ll love that entire thing. Don’t miss “All That Matters,” a heartfelt song featuring the old school hit “Number One Love.”

I highly recommend you download/buy the entire thing – all purchases go “straight towards funding his future musical endeavors.” Meanwhile, this Janet track is available for free download on SoundCloud.

Giraffage’s also been touring all over the world it seems. And in good company, too, with folks like TOKiMONSTA and Blackbird Blackbird. You can check out his upcoming tour schedule on his website. If you’re a fan of The Knife and have heard the majority of tracks from their latest Shaking The Habitual album, you might notice that these guys tend to play with the unexpected. I personally had to listen to “A Tooth For An Eye” several times before it actually started to grow on me, but once it did, I couldn’t get enough.

Today we have a nice remix brought to us by female producer Pursuit Grooves. Her take on “A Tooth For An Eye” is a little more unconventional, with exposed bass protrusions and uncompromising shapeshifting beats that transport the track into other musical territory. L.A. nightclub? Maybe not. Weird underground sex party? Quite possibly.

Just a little UK-on-UK action for you today. The London-based group Rudimental was just remixed by Hot Creations co-owner Lee Foss, turning a high-energy track into a diet banger.

Chopping up Ella Eyre’s gold vocals and bringing out some acoustic-sounding guitar to the forefront, Foss uses strong synths and a steady bassline to bring this remix to the table. Foss is definitely a masterful dance producer, which this remix showcases with ease.

Coming off the success of their 2012 LP, indie band Dirty Projectors are reading to release a remix EP of “The Socialites,” dropping this first single from Hot Chip musician Goddard.

Moving away from the more experimental beat of the original, Goddard does his dancetastic magical thing, bringing this indie track out for the night. It’s slightly feverish with an island-steeped beat, focusing all attention to the heart-felt vocals of the original. There’s a caliber that comes with Goddard’s productions that is clearly not missing on this production.

Look forward to more remixes from the likes of FaltyDL and AlunaGeorge on May 13, 2013 from Domino Record Co (preorder here).
