What's so good?

The Jinxes have a beautiful grasp on composing delicate folk gems with ease. Just listen to their single, “If You Want.”

The song starts off with a cello and acoustic guitar, sort of like a lullaby. Then the girl/guy harmonies comes in, which resonate through the rest of the song. With just a cello, acoustic guitar, and harmonized vocals, this track takes on a delicate orchestral sound, only simplified. The lyrics are easy to follow (and easy to get stuck in your head — fair warning!). This track has all the attributes that one would look for in a classic folk song.

If you’d like to hear more of The Jinxes, mark your calendar for May 10. That’s when their Send Me A Sign EP will be released!

What's so good?

As far as Australian folk-pop goes, David John Williams’ project DANVERS is up there with the finest. A member of the ridiculously talented Adelaide band Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire!, he’s just released his latest single “Paper Skin.”

Unlike many side projects where artists don’t stray too far from their band’s regular sound, Williams takes on a completely different guise on his solo work (similar to Manor, another offshoot of F!SRF!). Operating as a mix of folk, jazz and blues, he creates introspective music which showcases his dreamy vocals, changeable guitar and more importantly, his expert arrangement.

Described as a “slow-burning herald of things to come” I’m expecting new material from this brilliant musician soon. Check out his SoundCloud for previous releases.

What's so good?

I think I’ve found myself a new favorite track! Blake Cowan’s moniker is Wickerbird and his song is called “The Westering,” taken from his upcoming EP The Westering, set to release on March 26, 2013.

This is the type of track you put on when you want to soothe your soul and your mind. Considering the remaining structure of the song, Wickerbird teeters right on the edge of reality and a dream-like ethereal state. This indie folk movement has been strongly leading the pack when it comes to preferred genres these days, and “The Westering” is the perfect fit for anyone who has an affinity for said genre. It makes even more sense when I tell you that Wickerbird hails from Washingston state. There are even nature sounds in the background of this song. It makes me yearn for spring.

In all the chaos of today’s fast-paced, no-time-for-sleep world, Wickerbird can be that lullaby you need to bring you back down to serenity.

What's so good?

Indie Shuffle is so pleased to have the opportunity to premiere this enchanting track “Boreal” by Wickerbird. Prepare to be engulfed in a warm blanket of hymnal, acoustic goodness.

The track begins with what sounds like a soft-flowing stream and a delicate acoustic guitar. Soon thereafter, a hymnal voice arises and then the song takes off. Echoing choral tones saturate the empty space with warmth and soft waves of sound, so it feels as though this song can complement a cathartic experience. As graceful as this song is, it is also a collectively strong and resonating composition with the ability to uplift and unleash.

I’ve loved everything I’ve heard of Wickerbird thus far. There is a strength within his simple yet calculated approach to compiling a song that only leaves me more curious to hear what else he’s created. Mark your calendars for the release of his The Westering EP on March 26, 2013!

What's so good?

Looks like Iron & Wine is back in the mix again, gearing up to release a new album titled Ghost On Ghost mid-April.

It’s the first new material we’ve heard from Sam Bean since 2011′s Kiss Each Other Clean, which makes for a roughly-two-year turnaround. That’s about average in the music industry, but often indicates that any “evolution” of sound will be subtle.

Indeed, “Grace For Saints And Ramblers” is a typical Iron & Wine song: nothing groundbreaking, but certainly enjoyable to listen to. Hopefully you agree!

What's so good?

Yellow Red Sparks has released another single from their self-titled debut album aptly named, “Yellow Red Sparks.”

This orchestral indie pop will envelope your ears right from the starts. Between the cyclone of looping string instruments and melancholy vocals, you’ll easily drift off into an ethereal state. At least I did. There’s something mysterious yet soothing about this song. The chorus brings you back to earth with a bit more structure and strength, though it’s nice to be able to lose yourself in the song, too.

Yellow Red Sparks’ self-titled debut album can be purchased here. If you’re as curious as I am after hearing this single, chances are you’ll enjoy the rest of their orchestral indie pop album.

What's so good?

Boy did Born Ruffians have me fooled on this track! For the first minute or so I could have sworn they were headed in a Fleet Foxes-inspired direction (I’m confident that anyone familiar with Robin Pecknold will agree that Born Ruffians’ lead singer Luke Lalonde sounds almost exactly the same here).

Past the one minute mark, that whole illusion falls apart. Born Ruffians quickly emerge in true fashion, with an upbeat and slightly dated indie pop sound. I think that if it weren’t for the first minute, I’d probably have lost interest pretty quickly. As it turns out, however, it took the song far enough to qualify it for SOTD.

“Needle” is the first single off the band’s upcoming album Birthmarks, which should be available April 16th.

What's so good?

Guys! Iron and Wine is back!!! Are you excited?? Because I am!! Can’t you tell??!

The thing is, I didn’t really get on the Iron and Wine train really until their 2011 release, Kiss Each Other Clean. Then, I realized the error of my ways, went through their back catalogue, and found myself thoroughly digging Samuel Beam’s pristine use of acoustic guitar, his crystal-clear vocals, and the lovely complexity of his lyrics.

But THIS track, “Lovers’ Revolution,” elicits a… “Holy crap, that is so different and so good!!” out of me.” Simply, this is a dirty, hot jazz tune, straight from a smoke-filled basement where men wear hats and women are good at being bad. A flurry of brass horns and the devilish drumming of piano slinkily leads you into this distinctly different musical world; as the song continues, you find they’re really just getting started. The track speeds up and crescendos into a full-on jazz-plosion, Beam’s singing voice still managing to anchor the track in recognizably Iron and Wine territory.

You see, “Lovers’ Revolution” is a perfect example of why I fell in love so hard with Iron and Wine, albeit late. I was under the impression that Beam was a one trick pony, the harbinger of Fleet Foxes and little more. Kiss Each Other Clean showed me how wrong I was — how much versatility he has as a singer songwriter, and as a performer. “Lovers’ Revolution” flips the Iron and Wine sound on its head, yet again, while still maintaining the compelling loveliness that always seem to find its way into Beam’s songs. A change in genre, yes, but not necessarily a change in approach.

Iron and Wine’s next album, Ghost on Ghost, comes out April 16, 2013. We’ll see what journey Beam takes us on with this one.

What's so good?

I think it goes without saying that we here at Indie Shuffle are big fans of the L.A. indie rock band Local Natives. If you haven’t already noticed, we have featured three songs off their new album Hummingbird. How new is it? Well, the highly anticipated second studio album was officially released today. So, I thought why not share one more gem from the new album to commemorate the official release.

Here we have the track “Wooly Mammoth” — full of their signature echoing guitars, quick snare drum beats, and harmonizing vocals. The track is a tad more uptempo from our last post, “You and I,” and reminds me of the flavor they put into Gorilla Manor and what has made them one of my favorite bands over the past few years.

Grab your copy of Hummingbird over on iTunes, as it will be one of the better decisions you have made in 2013, or in the meantime, stream much of the album over on their SoundCloud page.

What's so good?

I casually met Beatenberg in Cape Town a few years ago, and from what I remember, they were extremely kind and adorable. This is, of course, secondary to their music, but their sound exudes a warmth that must come from somewhere.

The band’s music is unlike what I normally post, but “The Sultan of The Economic Cafe” softens the heart and has charmed its way into my musical orbit. They define themselves as a pop band, and their sound is catchy enough, but it eschews the shelf life of most Top 40 songs. Instead, they remind me of going home to lie awake in my childhood bed and stare at the glow and the dark stickers on the ceiling, while listening to Jack Johnson’s always necessary, In Between Dreams.

If you are equally charmed, check out some acoustic visual goodness via “In B Flat” off Farm Photos, courtesy of Invisible Sessions. Then visit the trio’s Facebook or SoundCloud to pick up the newly released free download of “Echoes,” a track fit for pop fame.

What's so good?

Normally weekends are pretty worthless for new music. Especially new music that’s good. But when The Strokes and Local Natives both released new singles last night, well — the norm was thrown on its head.

“You & I” is the third single released from Local Natives’ upcoming album Hummingbird (available January 29, 2013), following up the earlier “Breakers” and “Heavy Feet.”

As the opening track to the album, “You & I” has a tropical feel to it. With crooning vocals layered on top, it seems like a slightly weird way to set the tone for an album — I’d rather expect this to be best suited as a closing track.

Either way, it’s nice to hear new music from these lads, especially because they’ve been consistently good as of late.

What's so good?

I’ve had my eye on Amsterdam’s Tessa Rose Jackson ever since she released the unbelievably catchy “Change Time” which was featured on a German IKEA commercial last year. Unbelievably, the Dutch songstress is only 20 years old, writing, producing and playing music way beyond her years. If you can picture a slightly more poppier Fleet Foxes and a slightly more accessible version of Feist, then you’ll find Tessa sitting in between.

“All The King’s Horses” is the second official single from a debut album expected to be released this year, and is just as much fun as the rest of her work. Syncopated rhythms, handclaps, gorgeous vocals and a chorus that will echo in your mind for days make this single an absolute winner. It kind of reminds me of those really catchy Christmas tunes!

So much to like about this young woman and she has such a great attitude. We’ll be seeing a lot more of her in 2013.

What's so good?

Thanks to a dear friend of mine, I was recently introduced to Austin’s Lost River/Old River. As soon as I started listening, I was captivated. I think you will be, too.

Lost River/Old River’s stand out track, in my opinion, is “Missing Mountains.” It opens with a rolling acoustic guitar and gritty yet angelic vocals. Soon, the other instruments start to creep in, and you could feel the gorgeousness of this song building and building. The intricate construction of each instrument holds its own while interweaving with each other to create a delicate balance of mathematical folk. The hymnal, harmonious vocals lend a traditional feel to an otherwise unique approach.

I can’t wait to hear what Lost River/Old River will be releasing in the (hopefully near) future. For now, their 7″ might be enough to hold you over.

What's so good?

“Stones” is the product of Ludwig Plath, someone who goes by the stage name of Touchy Mob. This Berlin-based talent has crafted his sound to be one of substance, emotion and rawness, evident within his vocals as well as the mellow, intrinsic backdrop.

This track is a perfect blend of organic and manipulated sounds, and was made available on a split 12″ vinyl titled Cake, released with the help of Bloody Hands Ltd., alongside some tracks by Tellavision (which composed side B of the record). ”Stones” has stuck with me since the release, as well as many other of Touchy Mob’s compilations.

As if Touchy Mob’s musical talent wasn’t enough, Ludwig Plath also designed the album cover of the record, which I must say is quite impressive.

What's so good?

Okay, I’m pretty sure our blog is getting old. Old enough that I can say it’s been 2.5 years since we covered Born Ruffians’ last release, Say It.

Why does that matter? Well it means that when I saw a new song from the band this morning, I was pretty excited to listen in. It’s their first new single in quite some time, which often means a good bit of evolution.

I’ll let you be the ultimate judge of how this holds up, but overall I’m not finding myself blown away. It’s definitely very well produced, but toward the end the melody starts to grind me the wrong way. Can’t please everyone, I guess.

No word yet on what the album title will be or when it’s due to be released. But you can probably count on us covering their future singles, by which time we’ll hopefully know more!

What's so good?

Port Isla’s debut single “Sinking Ship” is one of the most incredibly infectious folk-pop songs I’ve heard in ages. In fact, I can’t remember the last time that I came across a song that so quickly got me dancing.

Based out of Norwich in the UK, I tip my hat to Blah Blah Blah Science for uncovering this one. There’s a good chance that if you’re a fan of Mumford & Sons or Boy and Bear, you just might fall head over heels for them as well.

Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to get back to dancing and clapping.

What's so good?

Yellow Red Sparks began as the solo acoustic project of songwriter Joshua Hanson. Hanson grew up in Idaho, but eventually relocated to Southern California. After self-releasing an EP titled Simply Put ME In YOUR Place, Hanson added Goldy (drums/vocals) and Sara Lynn (upright bass/piano/vocals/banjo) to the band.

Yellow Red Sparks recently completed their first full-length record, which was mastered by Grammy award winner Brian Lucey. He’s previously worked with The Shins, Sigur Rós and The Black Keys. While I cannot speak on the whole project, I find myself enchanted with “Monsters with Misdemeanors.”

From the band’s official press release:

“With a strong emphasis on lyrical content, Yellow Red Sparks create music with a timeless feel and continues the tradition of providing an open and honest perspective to raw, universal emotions that come with the everyday trials of life.”

What's so good?

When a member of Grizzly Bear releases a new track, you can bet your buttons we’re going to listen. Especially if that individual is also part of Department of Eagles.

“Not Coming Back” was recorded some time ago, but just released today by Daniel Rossen. According to his Soundcloud page:

This one is from January 2011 around the same time as a few of the EP songs. it’s not exactly finished, the lyric is rough, but I still enjoy what it is and eventually this song lead to other tunes on the EP and on Shields that I’m happy with. It’s a wintery New York song to me, it reminds me of home. And at this particular moment I miss home, and I feel like I should be there after all that’s happened recently. So there it is.

As we head into winter, I’m definitely enjoying the folksy vibes here. It sounds a bit like Elliott Smith, in fact.

What's so good?

After the first time I listened to Poor Moon a few days ago, I haven’t been able to go a day without a dose of their goodness. This Seattle quartet actually includes two active members of Fleet Foxes. Once you listen you’ll definitely hear the influence.

This album is truly multifaceted; it works for all seasons and moods. There are tracks on the album that are bright and sunny, and there are others that are somber and mellow. I personally enjoy both aspects — they make this album an impressive combination of indie pop, some folk and some psych pop. Still, with all things considered, Poor Moon manages to bring an overall unique freshness to their musical style. The harmonies are reminiscent of Fleet Foxes, but for the most part, the music holds its own.

You must listen to Poor Moon’s album in its entirety. I’m confident there’s a song for almost anyone and everyone.

What's so good?

Every now and again, it’s nice to feature something a little more folksy / acoustic for the Song of the Day.

It wasn’t intentional or anything — it just so happens that when I stumbled upon The Wooden Sky’s “Child Of The Valley” this morning, I couldn’t stop myself. And hopefully you, too, will enjoy this single.

Based out of Toronto, the band have released three records, several EPs, and gone on countless tours. This specific track was released nine months ago, as part of their most recent effort titled Every Child A Daughter, Every Moon A Sun. You can stream the entire thing via Line Of Best Fit.

What's so good?

There aren’t too many Australian bands like Winter People, and people are finally starting to notice their glaring talent. Headed up by singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Dylan Baskind, Winter People include five vocalists and two violinists – giving the six-piece a completely unique sound.

Three years since their debut EP Dog Years, they recently released their first full-length album, A Year at Sea. With the likes of Peter Katis (The National, Jonsi) and Rich Costey (Muse, Interpol, Bloc Party) involved in the production of this record, it’s a good indication of the album’s quality.

Each song is intricately crafted, and they vary immensely in approach — from the vast and expansive single “Gallons,” to the stripped back acoustic “Valley Hymn” (and everything in between). “Wishingbone” and “My Town” are a couple of the more folk-friendly tracks, highlighted by the group’s beautiful vocal arrangements (they have a special asset in Baskind’s haunting – and interchangeable voice). Songs like “Top of the World” and “The Banker’s Lament” take a slightly different, darker approach, with heavy guitar and percussion. “Two’s Company” is absolutely gorgeous, with an angelic opening leading into intense sections where the band’s strings are more prominent. This is one of those album’s which has been put together to listen to at once.

They have a huge couple of months coming up having been selected as the only local band to play at this year’s Harvest Festival (alongside the likes of Beck, Grizzly Bear and Sigur Ros), another testament to their talent. They’ve also just arrived in the USA for a run of shows (found below). Make sure you get along to check them out.

What's so good?

Brisbane’s Art of Sleeping are a truly talented band. Following their debut EP Colourblind (2010), the five-piece gained plenty of local attention earlier this year with their stunning single “Empty Hands.” This was the first single off their new EP, Like a Thief, which was produced by the renowned Yanto Browning (The Medics, The Jungle Giants) which will be released in Australia on Friday October 12 (via Dew Process/Universal).

The EP includes five tracks of incredible power and sentiment, commencing with the aforementioned “Empty Hands.” Second single “Above the Water” has a wonderful swinging rhythm to it – opening softly before Caleb Hodges’ goose bump-inducing vocals kick in. Title track “Like a Thief” is another standout, again a vast and expansive song which showcases the band’s completeness.

Having already developed a reputation for their commanding live shows, Art of Sleeping’s indie rock/folk releases are a fantastic addition to Australia’s overflowing musical family.

What's so good?

The Music Ninja just uncovered a beautiful new indie rock track, Fossil Collective’s “On & On.” The song is the lead single on the band’s upcoming EP by the same title, and instantly has me wanting to draw a comparison to Travis.

Believe it or not, the band has only two members: David Fendick and Jonny Hooker. Based out of Leeds (in the UK), they’ve etched a niche full or harmonious, acoustic-laden indie rock. It’s the type of music I might have seen fitting for the Garden State soundtrack, had they been around at the time.

What's so good?

According to Google, “Black Kaweah is a mountain of the Kaweah Peaks Ridge of the California’s Sierra Nevada, in Sequoia National Park. The peak has a local magnetic disturbance that has caused compasses in the vicinity to vary by up to eight degrees.”

Black Kaweah also happens to be the name of a mysterious folk band making noise in San Francisco. What I know so far is that the tracks are arranged and performed by Chris Albert and Mike Springer. I also personally believe that ”Oak Valley” feels like a mesmerizing cross between Pink Floyd, The Black Keys, and Fleet Foxes. Or some other trendy bands. Whatever floats your boat.

Just be sure to give “Oak Valley” a listen and scope some of Black Keweah’s other strange, captivating folk joyrides over at their website.

What's so good?

Ever hear of the term folk-chestral? Well, I really hadn’t either until I heard the single Switzerland from the Chesapeake, VA based band The Last Bison. Their debut album, Quill, was released almost a year ago, and it has taken them a while but they finally put out a visually stunning video for the single. The entire album is one beautiful piece of art.

Tangled with lively violins and whimsical banjo rifts, “Switzerland” hinges on the similar sounds of Mumford & Sons and Fleet Foxes. The seven-member band grew from jamming in a living room to a real live act that reflects in their root-sy quality and complex arrangements. With such a wide range of instruments, the band has really created a unique sound that, while may sound similar to other artists, makes them a hybrid that truly stands out.

Watch the video here:

Upcoming concerts:

Los Angeles – September 1st – Hotel Cafe
San Diego – September 3rd – Soda Bar
San Francisco – September 4th – Cafe Du Nord

Tangled with lively violins and whimsical banjo rifts, “Switzerland” hinges on the similar sounds of Mumford & Sons and Fleet Foxes. The seven-member band grew from jamming in a living room to a real live act that reflects in their root-sy quality and complex arrangements. With such a wide range of instruments, the band has really created a unique sound that, while may sound similar to other artists, makes them a hybrid that truly stands out.
