Think Crosby, Stills & Nash’s spawns putting a modern and fresh twist on mountain rock with some synth. That’s where Yoya comes in with their single, “King Of Nothing.”

The song is drenched in gorgeous harmonies that float above the instrumentals like wind chimes. The acoustic guitar is ever-so-present while galactic synth effects dance around and taunt. This track has its highs and lows and throughout it all, it remains intriguing and full of talent. I love hearing a mix of traditional rock influences mixed with wonky synth effects. When combined, they magically turn into a fresh sound that must be perfectly balanced.

It’s easy to overdo this style of music, but Yoya nailed it with “King Of Nothing.”

Why is it that every time I’ve fallen in love with a song in the past month the artist ends up being from Sweden? Probably because they’re damn talented! Moving away from that traditional Scandinavian indie pop, today I present to you Joakim Lowing, one of the great folk pop acts from the city of Stockholm.

“I Will Wait For You (Everybody Wants To Be a Cowboy)” is the lead-off single off Lowing’s forthcoming debut album. It’s a short one, but there’s plenty of time to get lost in the whistling and handclaps. Indeed, his well articulated and charming performance is worthy of comparisons to Fleet Foxes and, dare I say, Bon Iver. But so much more upbeat.

Michael Cassidy, signed with D Set Records in Glasgow, has won over our ears with “Battleships.” The single was released not too long ago, and has been accumulating some buzz, which initially emerged with his release of the Michael Cassidy EP about seven months back.

This Paisley-based singer/songwriter is best described as a master of combining alternative folk with melodic pop elements, creatively organizing his variety of influences like Richard Thompson, Radiohead, and Rufus Wainwright. “Battleships” embodies all of this and more by pulling on our heart strings with each note hit. Say what you want about Rihanna – and there’s plenty to say about that generic, pitchy bullhorn that can make even the most emotional track sound bland — but she at least wields her considerable industry power to garner some amazing tracks that don’t slough on the side of safety. Sure, her performances don’t rock any of my boats, but the structures of her songs are so sound as to make some truly fucking exquisite covers.

For example, listen to The Bird and The Bee’s take on “Please Don’t Stop the Music” (which turns that boring banger into a desperately sexual flirtation) and Juveniles’ live folk cover (performed at PopCorn sur le Mouv in France) of recent mega-single “Stay.” The only part I paid attention to on “Stay” was Mikky Ekko, so I never felt the full impact of the song. Something about Rihanna’s stylings just makes me gloss over the words coming out of her mouth, but Juveniles has me tripping over myself to follow every syllable.

There are songs that I play in the early hours of the morning that actually make my cup of coffee taste even better. OAK’s new single “One of Those Who Fly” is one such song.

When I heard it the very first time, I knew it was gonna stick. There’s something calming about his voice and the simplicity of the elements that surround his singing which give the track room to breathe. This mellow approach helps highlight all the little details in the background, blending them together in perfect unison (just like the flavors in my coffee!).

One of the keys to OAK’s sound is that it screams simplicity. His album On the Borderline (Between the Heart and the Mind) carries such a smooth vibe that its quite possible to miss the fact that multiple songs have in fact passed by (wait, which track are we on?).

OAK is finally back in his hometown Beirut, after spending time between Paris, Sydney & Wellington (New Zealand). And that’s a good thing, because seeing him live is a treat: the way he transmits the same coziness felt on the album into his performances is one of the more genuine things I’ve seen.

On a scale from “1″ to “totally didn’t expect this,” I really wasn’t anticipating a brand new single from Jack Johnson. Honestly, beyond 2001′s Brushfire Fairytales I haven’t paid too much attention to him — and the fact that he released an album called To The Sea in 2010 seems to have totally passed me by.

That said, I’m on top of my music game now, so naturally this one jumps out. “I Got You” is the first single off the Hawaiian singer’s upcoming album Here To Now To You, which will be due for release September 17th.

It’s a mellow and sweet acoustic jam, quite similar to his prior efforts. In fact, there’s a whole lot of nothing new going on here — exactly the way Jack Johnson should be playing it. Welcome back to your High School days?

Whitley is the moniker of Melbourne’s Lawrence Greenwood, a talented and enigmatic singer/songwriter who has spent the last couple of years in musical hiatus. After releasing his much-loved LP Go Forth, Find Mammoth in 2009, he’s spent the last couple of years traveling the globe, planning his return to the spotlight. Now complete, news of his next album, Even the Stars are a Mess, has been revealed — with a release date scheduled for July 5, 2013.

The album’s first single indicates the wait may well be worth it, with “My Heart is not a Machine” an absolutely gorgeous folk-pop lament. Greenwood’s warm vocals have been joined by the echoing harmonies of Esther Holt to create a stunningly heartfelt tale of introspection. With voices like this, you don’t need too much else, and the steady percussion and hovering guitar work are just enough to finish this one off.

A couple of great remixes of this one have also recently become available (here) from Leadbetter and Fractures — both worth checking out if you love this song as much as I do.

Recently added to the sold-out Splendour in the Grass festival (which will also feature performances from Frank Ocean, Mumford and Sons and The National), expect this to be a triumphant return for this truly talented individual.

There are few artists that I can say have altered the course of my life like Absofacto. My first time listening to his album Sinking Islands was also during my first few rounds of chemo, and as inspired by the song “No Power,” I would “shuffle to the beep of my cardiograph” in the hospital to feel like the cancer didn’t have control over me.

It was an extraordinarily fortifying song for me, and I shared it like an evangelist around the ward with every patient I could find. Others responded positively and they started asking me to make playlists for them during their treatment. Eventually, that led to a volunteer effort I continue two years later: making playlists on request for cancer patients nationwide to use during radiation/chemo.

In a lot of ways, the trajectory of my life has followed Absofacto’s musical path. “No Power” belonged to a part of my life where I thought that there was nothing but endings, and “Möbius Strip (Thru My Fingers)” — his new song about the folly of saying goodbye fully — is a sentiment I’ve come to realize as true only recently.

“Möbius Strip” is a beautiful track that takes inspiration from the idea that a structure can exist that has no beginning or end; and if you begin walking along it you’ll end up right back where you started, ad infinitum. It’s stunningly frank and life-inducing. An amazing return to form for Absofacto after being gone from his work for nearly a year.

Shining Bird is a group of musicians from Austinmer, a small beachside town just south of Sydney. Draftsmen, scholars and bodysurfers make up the rag-tag bunch, who came together over their love of music and poetry. After releasing an EP last year, they’re gearing up for the release of their debut album, due out later this year.

If you’ve ever been to the NSW South Coast, you’ll understand what a beautiful, laid-back place it is. ”Distant Dreaming” is the first single off the album, and the track is exactly what you’d expect music from this area to be like. Everything about its musical arrangement emits a gorgeous warmth, topped off with Dane Taylor’s rich, deep vocals.

This was a lovely introduction to this band for me, and if the rest of the album is like this, it will be a perfect soundtrack for the Australian summer.

There has been a lot of good music released recently, but it has to be said that NYC’s MisterWives takes the cake with their latest single, “Coffins.” I had never heard of the trio before today, but I can honestly say that this is one of the best singles I have heard this year.

I suppose it’s hard to pin MisterWives down to an exact genre. I would say they’re a mix between modern pop and folk, something very similar to Of Monsters and Men. Now, about those vocals… WOW. Mandy Lee has the most endearing and sincere vocals that have ever graced my ears. She manages to melt my heart and pull on every single one of my heartstrings all in the space of three minutes.

The song speaks to me in so many ways and I absolutely love the entire arrangement, especially those subtle but haunting strings in the background. If this doesn’t put MisterWives on the map, I honestly don’t know what will.

If you’ve ever come across any Josh and Mer posts here on Indie Shuffle, then you must know about Josh’s solo project! Josh Schroeder has ventured out on his own to create some beautiful indie folk.

In the meantime, you can check out their live video for their singles “Castle” and “Left Right.” Their live renditions of these two songs shine and glimmer even brighter than the album versions. What more can you ask for in a live performance? You can certainly tell that this talented bunch are all seasoned veterans while maintaining a humble and gentle stage presence. It seems as if this is the type of live performance that reaches your core and sends chills up your spine.

I’ve been to a lot of live shows, but no band has ever exuded as much pure joy as Of Monsters and Men. I don’t think anyone can listen to or watch them without smiling, it’s simply impossible. They’ve mastered the secret sauce that every artist wants to get their hands on: wildly infectious songs and an attitude that inspires more audience participation than any other show I’ve attended.

They took the stage last night at the Fox in Oakland with only one album in their arsenal, and although some critics claim that it’s not enough for a 15-song set, I beg to differ. Their energetic, playful performance had the sold-out crowd jumping, clapping, whistling, and shouting — even on the quieter songs like “Slow and Steady.” Clear stand-outs were “From Finner,” “Mountain Sound,” and, of course, “Little Talks.” We also got to hear a snippet of new material, the trumpet-fueled “Beneath My Bed,” as well as a cover of Yeah Yeah Yeahs which you can listen to here. Plus, the three-song encore included a “remix” of “Little Talks,” which was more of a dark pop cover that sounded a little bit like The xx, in my opinion — it was awesome.

Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdottir and Ragnar Porhallsson might not have the wild chemistry of other male/female vocalists on stage, but you can tell their friendship runs deep — same goes for the rest of the band, who frequently switched instruments, waltzed around the stage, and prompted much hand-clapping from the audience.

All in all, this was the perfect way to spend my birthday. I can’t wait until we hear more new material from this Icelandic folk rock group — it can’t come soon enough!

A little over a month back, we picked up on Tunng’s first single “So Far From Here,” off their upcoming album Turbines. The song was a multi-layered folktronica exploration that had a bit of a stunted rhythm. In a way I’d have to say that it was a little hard to approach — unless of course, you were already a fan of Tunng (as I am).

Fortunately — now that we’re about a month away from the album’s release (June 17th) — the band have gone ahead and unveiled a second single, this one titled “The Village.”

The track starts off with 10 seconds of “woah, what’s that noise?,” quickly transitioning to a bit of a clangy, Western-feel. With it, Tunng have once again displayed an atypical approach to rhythm and melody, establishing some type of crossroad between folk-rock, experimental psychedelia and indietronica.

I cannot express how excited I was to discover that Foxtails Brigade covered a Jon Brion song. Ever since the movie I Heart Huckabees, I’ve held a soft spot for Jon Brion (who composed the entire movie). Considering that Foxtails Brigade is one of my new favorite bands, I was beyond ecstatic to listen to this song and watch the video, and I was not the least bit disappointed.

The Foxtails Brigade’s video for their version of “Little Person” is simply adorable and sweetly captivating. This animated piece features lead singer, Laura Weinbach, being a lonesome little person lost in the mix of this crazy world, and then discovering a creature who’s just like her. They frolic through the days, going on adventures and picnics and genuinely enjoying each other’s company.

The song itself is thick with orchestral arrangements — it’s truly a modern-day symphony of strings and Laura’s milky vocals. Foxtails Brigade have got such a gorgeous grasp on innovative orchestral folk pop that I have no doubt they are destined for great things. So do yourself a favor and listen to and watch “Little Person.” And what’s even better is that you can download this song for FREE!

As soon as I heard this song, I felt a sense of warmth and happiness. After reading a bit more about Leo Drioli, those feelings I initially felt made more sense. Leo is a spiritual teacher in the consciousness movement, and I definitely think that shines through in his music.

Leo’s single “Give It Your Love” is an enthralling folk-pop jam that features acoustic guitar, an electric guitar with a lot of wah pedal effects, and classic bass and drums. The message within the lyrics is something to be considered and quite possibly the most important thing to take away from this song. Basically, the single is just an all-around feel-good track that you can put on when you need a mental and emotional pick-me-up.

What’s even cooler is that Leo Drioli’s first public performance will be at the Dalai Lama conference. I think he’ll fit in just fine.

You know those songs that make you feel all warm and giddy inside, and you can’t help but smile? Well, this is exactly what you’re about to feel with Siôn Russell Jones’ “So Long.” The Cardiff-born singer/songwriter has just released his most recent EP, So Long, and I’m absolutely in love with the title single.

I think there’s something very unique about Siôn’s voice; it’s the type of voice you can listen to over and over, kind of like Jack Johnson. Behind his wondrous vocals, you find these intricate guitar melodies and cracking choruses that will melt your heart. I think his live performance would be a real treat to see.

Now I’m off to listen to the rest of the EP and hopefully find a few more gems!

Midway through last year we brought you Second Hand Heart’s single “Trouble,” a beautiful, emotive track which I spent a lot of time daydreaming over. The Melbourne five-piece have been together for a while now, but I think the best is still to come from them. Given their latest single “Hold On,” I’m sure I won’t be alone in that assumption either!

Written between New York and Melbourne, this track is the first taste of the band’s debut album, which will be out later this year. It’s a real slow-burner of a song, starting with one vocal part accompanied by simple keys, but then grows steadily into a stunning interplay of vocals and musicianship. There’s something about the two female singers’ formula which always seems to work, and the heartwarming tones of Jessica Carroll and Lily Parker cover this perfectly. The instrumental element to this track is also a highlight, with dreamy piano chords making way for waves of guitar crescendos. Yum.

I’ve really fallen for this song, each time I listen to it something new takes me. Hopefully it will have the same effect on you too.
