A couple months back it was announced that The Dodos were working on a new album. They were one of my favorite bands in 2008, so understandably I was quite excited to hear what was in store.

“Confidence” is the first new single off the band’s upcoming album Carrier, out on August 27th. The album will be their fifth to date, following up 2011′s No Color.

For those of you familiar with The Dodos, you’ll no doubt notice that “Confidence” stays true to the sound established by the trio in albums past. In doing so, it leaves me at a middle ground: there’s obviously nothing amazingly evolutionary here to get me excited, but it’s quite nice to hear something from a band I’ve grown to like over the last few years.

Nestled in the middle of wine country, Bottle Rock Napa Valley was an incredible music festival, with good food, wine, and a high-caliber lineup. Since this was the first time the festival has taken place, there were a few logistical mishaps here and there, but no real complaints. All in all, I’d say this was the perfect way to kick off the summer music festival season!

Unfortunately, I was only able to attend Friday. We kicked off the day with some delicious ribs from the Cochon Volant BBQ truck, the folk rock of Allah Las playing in the background. We continued to eat our way through the festival — you can see an awesome round-up of the delicious food on Serious Eats if you’re interested (warning: do not click if hungry). The rest of the day was filled with wine in a bag (it’s like a juice box for adults) and the likes of Dirty Projectors, Alabama Shakes, The Flaming Lips, The Shins (they were AMAZING) and The Black Keys. I snuck peeks at Justin Townes Earle, Andrew Bird, and the other awesome acts playing that day (outlined here in this festival preview), but The Shins and The Black Keys were the true stars of the show.

Since I wasn’t able to bring you a recap of Saturday and Sunday’s show, I figured I’d highlight the acts that played in the playlist below. Enjoy, and definitely be sure to buy a ticket for next year’s festival!

If you feel like a bit of good ol’ dirty rock today, have I got a treat for you. Sydney-based five-piece The Jones Rival have been around for a few years, honing a upbeat rock sound which could easily be from a bygone era.

With a couple of tracks in the bag already, they’ve just released their strongest to date, the barnstorming “Jumpin’ Frog.” The band reference the Rolling Stones as an influence, and you could almost picture Mick Jagger fronting them, given the swagger levels they produce on this single. Plenty of heavy guitar riffs and driving percussion are finished off with powerful, howling vocals — it’s nothing new, but these guys do it really well.

The Jones Rival are currently finishing up their debut EP, which is due out in the second half of the year.

As soon as I heard this song, I felt a sense of warmth and happiness. After reading a bit more about Leo Drioli, those feelings I initially felt made more sense. Leo is a spiritual teacher in the consciousness movement, and I definitely think that shines through in his music.

Leo’s single “Give It Your Love” is an enthralling folk-pop jam that features acoustic guitar, an electric guitar with a lot of wah pedal effects, and classic bass and drums. The message within the lyrics is something to be considered and quite possibly the most important thing to take away from this song. Basically, the single is just an all-around feel-good track that you can put on when you need a mental and emotional pick-me-up.

What’s even cooler is that Leo Drioli’s first public performance will be at the Dalai Lama conference. I think he’ll fit in just fine.

After disappearing into hibernation for more than a year, Sydney-based Valar are back with brand new material, something I’m rather excited about. In fact, a new EP entitled Chocolate Cake is just around the corner — their first new release since 2011’s The Belly of the Whale.

I don’t mind waiting a little while for good music, and Valar has certainly delivered this with the EP’s first single “Astronaut.” I wouldn’t usually compare a band with Radiohead, but these guys earn the comparison with ease. Vocalist James Blackwood’s York-esque tones are ably supported by their typically celestial soundscapes. The highlight is its off-beat, jazz tempo which aids the track’s tranquil vibe to a tee.

Valar make music that you should listen to without distraction so that you are able to take in all its brilliant subtleties. Self-produced at a number of homes around the state, Chocolate Cake is due for release on July 31.

When I saw the lineup for the brand new Bottle Rock Napa Valley festival, my jaw dropped. The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, The Shins, Flaming Lips, Alabama Shakes, Andrew Bird, Edward Sharpe, Dirty Projectors, Iron and Wine, Mavis Staples, Sharon Van Etten, Best Coast… the list went on and on. Plus, the festival is in the heart of Bay Area wine country, just an hour driving distance from San Francisco. I had to go.

Well, the festival is happening in a mere week, and I’ll be there. Find me happily sipping wine from a local vineyard as I take in the sights and sounds. I can’t wait for this festival, and if you’re in the Bay Area, you should get your booty up there. Tickets are still on sale here! In the meantime, catch a preview of Friday’s lineup below.

I somehow stumbled upon Wilco’s “Impossible Germany” this morning, and it couldn’t have been a more appropriate song! There’s something about it that’s so relaxing and calm, yet upbeat. It seems perfectly suited for the gloomy spring weather we’re getting in Amsterdam right now.

The song was released on the band’s 2007 album Sky Blue Sky, their sixth studio album at the time. If you ask me, it’s pretty wonderful to have a band as prolific as Wilco continually release great music.

While there’s no word of a new album in the works, here’s hoping they’ve still got more up their sleeves.

UK’s own Treetop Flyers have adopted the oh-so-lovable Northwest indie folk rock sound that’s become such a huge staple within our generation’s genre preferences.

Their single “Things Will Change” is a perfect depiction of that. This five-piece awakens a lovely vintage sound that is often imitated, but not always nailed down. Treetop Flyers nail it. Hard. From the chords to the melody to the vocals, this is the quintessential classic rock track that can stand the test of time. It’s swiftly moving and incredibly infectious — both important qualities in order to stand out in the crowd. I bet you won’t be able to listen to this song only once.

To top it off, Treetop Flyers just released a simple but endearing video for this single. And don’t forget about April 29, 2013 when their debut album, The Mountain Moves, is released!

I have the pleasure of knowing about Ghost and Gale through Kacie, a dear friend of mine, whose sister, Brodie Jenkins, is one half of this promising new band. Brodie, along with partner in crime David Luning, are making dreamy folk rock music best suited to a desert campfire and setting sun.

Ghost and Gale recently worked their butts off to record and film a music video for their single, “Take Me To The Fire,” through a successful Kickstarter campaign. The video is rooted in country folklore, and has a delicious twist at the end that will leave you wanting more.

Noah And The Whale are gearing up to release their fourth album, recently unveiling a new song titled “There Will Come A Time.” It’s the first taste of new music from the London-based band since 2011, and certainly sounds great!

Alongside the album (titled Heart Of Nowhere), lead singer Charlie Fink intends to simultaneously unveil a short, dystopian film. Based on what can be seen in the music video for this song (embedded below), the album certainly seems as if it’ll qualify as a bit of a “concept album”!

Noah And The Whale are gearing up to release their fourth album, recently unveiling a new song titled “There Will Come A Time.” It’s the first taste of new music from the London-based band since 2011, and certainly sounds great!

Alongside the album (titled Heart Of Nowhere), lead singer Charlie Fink intends to simultaneously unveil a short, dystopian film. Based on what can be seen in the music video for this song (embedded below), the album certainly seems as if it’ll qualify as a bit of a “concept album”!

Sydney five-piece The Preatures caught me a little off-guard with their latest single, “Is This How You Feel?” So far, each track they’ve released touches a different nerve — which is the mark of an excellent band — and this one once again solidifies their versatility.

“Is This How You Feel” is new material following the release of their Shaking Hands EP in October, with a debut LP in the works. It’s chalk and cheese when you compare it with their last release, the cagey, wild-west themed “Pale Rider.” Gone are the jangling guitar riffs and ghostly reverb, replaced with a funky bass line and a beautiful male/female vocal tag-team.

While their previous releases have been excellent, this one is by far their most accessible. Hopefully this means they start getting the credit their carefully crafted music deserves. A+!

Local Natives and Fryars. Two names that are quite common here at Indie Shuffle, but I believe this is the first post in which both sounds are blended together. It’s a concoction that makes for some phenomenal Friday vibes.

The Fryars-produced remix of “Heavy Feet,” off Local Natives’ Hummingbird LP, is peaceful, wavy, and pure. Like a cold, crystal clear stream of fresh water flowing through the flurry capped Adirondacks… maybe that’s a little too poetic for a guy that usually blogs about mixtape rappers,  but have a listen and be your own judge.

I sometimes like to call songs like this Audio Adderall. So, if you have a bunch of TPS reports to wrap up before getting out there and doing whatever it is you do on a Friday night, throw this one on and make that final stretch of the work week a bit more bearable.

There have been plenty of movies about teachers that are incredible, inspiring individuals.  Teachers making the world a better place — one student at a time — through their caring and creative teaching methods. Half Nelson is not one of these movies.

Half Nelson is the story of Dan, an inner-city middle school history played by Ryan Gosling (yes, the dude from The Notebook).  On the outside, Dan seems like he’s completely got it together. He’s young, well liked, successful in his classroom, and the coach of his school’s girls basketball team.

Despite this facade, Dan’s life is completely falling apart when one of his students finds him passed out in the locker due to his cocaine addiction. Drey, the girl that discovers Dan’s deep dark secret, has her own problems as she deals with absentee parents and the temptation to become a drug dealer.  The two make an unlikely friendship as they try to help each other and fight to separate the different worlds that they find themselves in, and figure out who they really are.

The Canadian indie rock collective Broken Social Scene really helps set the introspective tone of the film, with a number of their tracks (like “Shampoo Suicide,” and “Stars & Sons”) peppered throughout the movie, while New York rapper Saigon helps legitimize the movie’s Brooklyn setting with his track “The Corner.”  Folk rocker Billy Bragg and the synth pop duo Somnambulants were also featured in Half Nelson, and rounded out an incredibly well thought-out soundtrack that helped viewers feel for a character who was much more real than teacher movies typically provide.

I usually can’t get too into the Americana genre but Nora Jane Struthers & The Party Live has been quite the exception for me. Her single “Carnival” is a sweetly composed Americana-folk ballad that has warm vibes and a country undertone.

“Carnival” starts off with a simple acoustic guitar and Nora’s milky vocals singing about the carefree atmosphere of a carnival and the sights there are to see. Soon your ears will be engulfed in strings galore- acoustic guitar, banjo, violin, and a stand-up bass. This is the quintessential line-up for any down-home band, but Nora Jane Struthers & The Party Live have definitely got a modern and refreshing take on a musical style that has stood the test of time for decades.

By this song alone, you can tell that these musicians are incredibly talented and well-trained. It only makes me that more curious to hear their upcoming album, Carnival, set to release on April 16, 2013!

I think about my early concert-going experiences pretty often. Music was somehow much simpler to me then — if it struck some kind of positive emotional chord, I was in love. I wasn’t looking for a deeper meaning, for serious musical prowess, even for some kind of striking creativity. If a song made me feel good, that was more than enough; I wasn’t paying attention to chord progressions.

We all have to grow up. But sometimes, I find myself overwhelmed with the heart swell of first music love. Josh Ritter’s show at the Fox Theater in Oakland was one of those times. The sheer joy with which he performs, combined with his decided musical skill and creative song writing, makes his live performance something of a perfect union between my gut reaction music past and my more-informed music writer present.

Let’s start with the nuts and bolts of this show. Ritter played for close to two hours, alternating between solo performances and room-shaking renditions backed by his Royal City Band. He spent much time covering ground from his new album, The Beast In Its Tracks, peppered with memorable songs from his extensive back catalogue (including the excellent “So Runs The World Away,” one of my top picks of 2010). As a performer, Ritter is captivating — he fell to his knees multiple times, to catapult his powerful vocals throughout the room without the aid of a microphone, to curl himself more closely around his guitar, or to pay homage to his talented band members. He engaged the audience in multiple sing-a-longs, played a tune with all of the stage lights off, and inspired a standing ovation.

These are the makings of a great show, to be sure. But Ritters’ incredible, joyful energy elevates his performance to new heights. He jokes with the audience on an intimate level that transforms the grand Fox into a coffee shop open mic night. He repeatedly commented on how stunning the theater itself was, and how honored and grateful he was to be there. What’s more, he’s unfailingly genuine — his mile-wide grin lit the stage, as he pogoed up and down to the beat of his tunes. He thanked (pretty much) every single person involved with his tour — the merch guy, the person fueling their bus, and so on. He has the energy of a buoyant, Midwestern Bruce Springsteen.

Highlights included: “New Lover” off The Beast in its Tracks — the album sorts through his recent divorce, and this song is his version of a middle finger response. Still, his energy transforms what could be bitter into a joyful catharsis, with a beat you can dance to. “The Curse,” a charming love song between an archeologist and a mummy, transformed into an absolutely heartbreaking tale of lost love through the sheer pathos of his voice. “Change Of Time,” his closing number, grew from a delicate smattering of strings on his guitar to an overwhelming swell of sound and feeling. “Idaho,” his opener, left Ritter on his knees, evoking the wail of a train with a perfectly pitched, ringing howl.

Emotion and technical skill, joy and heartbreak join together seamlessly for Ritter. And, like the best musicians, his live performance adds a whole new dimension to his already excellent recordings. His songs have always evoked a kind of Americana I wish I knew better, one of manifest destiny and live-or-die-for-our-principles kind of frontierism. I’ll say this for his chops as a performer — he very nearly takes me there.

SXSW has come to a close, and I’m friggin’ exhausted. But hey…still gotta post the Song of the Day, right?

Fortunately I stumbled upon this great cover of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s “Skeletons” by Of Monsters And Men. The original song was featured on the album It’s Blitz!, but this cover only surfaced about a month or two ago.

Probably the coolest part about this rendition is that it appears to have been performed live. And given the amazing quality, that’s pretty darn impressive. Clearly Of Monsters And Men are quite talented!

Big Deal is a London based duo made up of Kacey Underwood and Alice Costelloe. They last released new music in 2011 with their debut album, Ligths Out, and today we bringing a new song from their sophmore LP, June Gloom. 

“In Your Car” is an indie rock song that has great vocal harmony, heavy guitar play and fluid drumming. June Gloom comes out June 4, 2013 (fitting, isn’t it?). According to Kacey Underwood, this single is “that fun, road trip kind of a song doesn’t happen a lot with English rock bands because it’s just not in the culture.” Indeed, the song was written while the band was traveling down the Californa coastline.
