A little over a month back, we picked up on Tunng’s first single “So Far From Here,” off their upcoming album Turbines. The song was a multi-layered folktronica exploration that had a bit of a stunted rhythm. In a way I’d have to say that it was a little hard to approach — unless of course, you were already a fan of Tunng (as I am).

Fortunately — now that we’re about a month away from the album’s release (June 17th) — the band have gone ahead and unveiled a second single, this one titled “The Village.”

The track starts off with 10 seconds of “woah, what’s that noise?,” quickly transitioning to a bit of a clangy, Western-feel. With it, Tunng have once again displayed an atypical approach to rhythm and melody, establishing some type of crossroad between folk-rock, experimental psychedelia and indietronica.

While the end finishes on a bit of a repetitive / jarring note, I’d have to say that this track leaves me keen to hear what more they have in store. If you find yourself in the same boat, you can pre-order Turbines here.

When I was a child, I was obsessed with novels of epic travails and ultimately uncommon, total self-transformation. I read every single one in the library, completely absorbed until a character would return home; and then I, safety scissors in hand, would cut out the ending and paste my own in. I’d muster up as much of a scoff as a child could and write: “As if home is a place to aspire to” in the back.

As an adult, I think I’m the only committed to the romance of a nomadic life until I hear tracks like Thieves Like Us’ “Never Known Love“ and Kulkid’s exulting remix of Woodkid’s “Boat Song.” Both of these tracks are dear to me because they are about using oceans and immigration as distance from your roots — but Kulkid’s remix is the first I’ve heard that goes full throated at the joy of the “tabula rasa” life in a new land.

Kulkid’s synth work transforms Woodkid’s original into a jubilant journey, befitting the fights with kraken and shipwrecks that come along so epically when you’re redefining yourself. When his instrumentation soars, you can feel yourself throwing your head into the wind, singing along:

“We threw our hearts into the sea,
Forgot all of our memories”

This isn’t the first time we’ve featured Kulkid, and with this kind of ear for a song’s emotional core, it won’t be the last.

Local Natives and Fryars. Two names that are quite common here at Indie Shuffle, but I believe this is the first post in which both sounds are blended together. It’s a concoction that makes for some phenomenal Friday vibes.

The Fryars-produced remix of “Heavy Feet,” off Local Natives’ Hummingbird LP, is peaceful, wavy, and pure. Like a cold, crystal clear stream of fresh water flowing through the flurry capped Adirondacks… maybe that’s a little too poetic for a guy that usually blogs about mixtape rappers,  but have a listen and be your own judge.

I sometimes like to call songs like this Audio Adderall. So, if you have a bunch of TPS reports to wrap up before getting out there and doing whatever it is you do on a Friday night, throw this one on and make that final stretch of the work week a bit more bearable.

I’d literally burn through five a day, looking to find the next best thing — and in the process jettisoning bands left and right. Fortunately, one of the albums that caught my attention was Tunng’s Good Arrows, an experimental folk pop record with a myriad of twists and turns.

Alas, these days I’m all about singles — the last full album I listened to was by My Bloody Valentine, and boy was that a bore! So, it’s a good thing that Tunng just released a new single titled “So Far From Here,” set to be released on their album Turbines (due June 17th).

“So Far From Here” maintains Tunng’s signature mixed-gender vocal approach, fully backed by layered instrumentation (my favorite moment might be the fun guitar lick you’ll notice at 1:07).

Overall, the chances that they’ll get me to snap back into my album listening phase is slim. But, you can bet your buttons that if they release another single I’ll be all over it!

Under the alias Spies on Bikes, Nathan Cochran has delved into the dreamy haze of electronica. He’s been perfecting his live performances, in which he reproduces his recording process while exhibiting live vocals. He’s also working with the Relief In Abstract record label, which has gifted us the phenomenas XXYYXX and GRANT and is constantly toiling away for the next discovery. Spies On Bikes is currently perfecting his debut EP under yet another name, Furabo. Whatever he wants to call it, we’ll listen.

Long-titled and valiantly vocaled, “Long Walks and Recorded Talks” is the sound of spring. A giddy romance that bops into your life and makes every aspect of your day glimmer in optimism lends itself to the background of this song.

With the promise of warmth on the horizon, we enter the season with caged joy on the precipice of  a release. “Long Walks and Recorded Talks” starts with a slow strum of the guitar, escalating with hollow percussion that embodies a waking feeling of joy. Enjoy!

It’s no mystery that we’re big fans of London-based Mt. Wolf. The quartet can’t really be pinned to a genre, but dream folk comes close. We deservedly hyped their brooding Life Size Ghosts EP last October, a wonderful debut worth exploring if you have some time.

Mt. Wolf’s upcoming Hypolight EP has some hype behind it thanks to lead single “Hypolight.” Some very deep vibes right there. I feel that way about the whole EP. It’s whimsical, and at the same time heartbreaking. For further reference, listen to their raw rework of Usher’s “Climax.”

Mt. Wolf fills a beautiful space with lead vocalist and song-writer Kate Sproule, who meshes so well with producer Sebastian Fox. There’s also Stevie McMinn on acoustic guitar with Alex Mitchell handling percussion. Together, these four talented artists create some strikingly original and authentic music.

I had to a chance to talk to Mt. Wolf. Read on for the full interview:

I know it’s important we talk about the EP, but first I have to ask: Are you still finding sand from that show in Nevada?
Occasionally Kate still finds some under her eyelid, Al in his drum pads, Stevie in is hair and I (Bassi) sometimes have to massage a rogue grain out from underneath one of my Maschine pads…

Had you been to the U.S. before spending time in San Francisco and Nevada?
We had all been on separate trips but this was our first one as a band. We can’t wait to return!

You’re all from England, and grew up by the sea. How has this influenced Mt. Wolf’s sound?
I think landscape has a pretty big influence on our sounds. I know Kate and Stevie have expressed the impact of being near the sea when writing vocal and guitar lines respectively and I think it shows in tracks like “Life Size Ghosts.” The beats and sounds I make are definitely affected by my immediate environment too — if I’m in London a song may come out sounding different to when I’m in Dorset! Al also grew up by the sea in Brighton.

Kate, you mentioned once that it’s important for Mt. Wolf’s sound to be portable with the ability to layer in electronics. I also read that it takes a while to craft a Mt. Wolf record. How do you think taking that time behind the scenes carries over into the portability of your sound?
On the face of it that sounds a bit counter-intuitive, doesn’t it! It’s important for us as musicians that we can play our songs whenever and wherever we want to, without feeling restricted. So we take a lot of time and care over the intimacy as well as the expansiveness of the record in the hope that we can be inventive with how we play live. It just means that we can do both full electronic shows but that equally if we strip the electronics back, there’s a sound that is still recognisably ours and hopefully, the songwriting still comes through.

Okay, so bigger picture: where do you see Mt. Wolf one year from now; five years from now?

Hailing from Toronto, Pick A Piper was formed by Caribou drummer Brad Weber, along with Angus Fraser, Dan Roberts and various guest vocalists such as John Schmersal and Ryan McPhun. The group has successfully put out two EPs to date, and is releasing their forthcoming debut LP on April 2, 2013 on Mint.

This collaborative project “combines dance-music structures, poly-rhythmic percussion, atmospheric sound design, loopy melodies and a focus on electronics and production technique to create a sound poised between the organic and the synthetic,” according to Fractured Air. “Lucid in Fjords” reminds us a bit of the quality of Radiohead’s vocal integration, as well as M83′s 80s-infused approach to synthetic music.

This sound features heavy percussion with creeping and echoed lyrics that can cause your eyelids to feel pleasantly heavy in response. “Lucid in Fjords” explores a world where electronica rules, and abides by its every rule.

Emerson Snowe (aka Jarrod Mahon) is an electric folk musician living in Brisbane, Australia. Mahon is rapidly establishing himself as one of the Australian music scene’s brightest up and coming, and it’s easy to see why.

The depth in Mahon’s vocal delivery and writing show maturity far beyond his mere 18 years of age. His lyrics are, frankly, beautiful. There’s purpose and meaning behind each line, and an element of pure rawness and vulnerability in every single song. Themes of heartbreak, solitude, and the pains of growing up are universal, and a common focus for artists. Rarely, however, are such sentiments expressed so strongly by a musician, in a way that you actually feel a bit heavy-hearted when listening to their music. I don’t mean that as a deterrent; you’ll understand what I mean when you listen, I promise.

I really struggled to choose which Emerson Snowe track would be best to first introduce you guys to, because there are so many I would recommend. “Bella Rose” seems to be the common consensus as one of Mahon’s best tracks to date, and it really is stunning. Emerson Snowe’s EP is due out any day now, so keep a careful watch on his Facebook page.

Emerson Snowe (aka Jarrod Mahon) is an electric folk musician living in Brisbane, Australia. Mahon is rapidly establishing himself as one of the Australian music scene’s brightest up and coming, and it’s easy to see why.

The depth in Mahon’s vocal delivery and writing show maturity far beyond his mere 18 years of age. His lyrics are, frankly, beautiful. There’s purpose and meaning behind each line, and an element of pure rawness and vulnerability in every single song. Themes of heartbreak, solitude, and the pains of growing up are universal, and a common focus for artists. Rarely, however, are such sentiments expressed so strongly by a musician, in a way that you actually feel a bit heavy-hearted when listening to their music. I don’t mean that as a deterrent; you’ll understand what I mean when you listen, I promise.

I really struggled to choose which Emerson Snowe track would be best to first introduce you guys to, because there are so many I would recommend. “Bella Rose” seems to be the common consensus as one of Mahon’s best tracks to date, and it really is stunning. Emerson Snowe’s EP is due out any day now, so keep a careful watch on his Facebook page.

This is how I prefer to start my day: some Philz coffee and a brand spanking new track from Bibio called “À Tout À L’heure”.  At the moment, I am not sure which is energizing my body more. Perhaps the combination of the two?

There is something happy, uplifting, and totally carefree about Bibio’s new track that reminds me why I started listening to his music years ago.

For me, it all started with “Lover’s Carvings,” but today it continues from his forthcoming album Silver Wllkinson that will be soon released via Warp Records.  As the title of the track “À Tout À L’heure” translates “See you soon,” I can’t wait to see this new album.

This beautifully singular remix of “Place To Be” is about a Jamaican man that is forced to move to Williamsburg, NYC, where his reggae spirit is filtered through an indietronica kaleidoscope. He slowly starts to lose his inner and outer light, so he goes to Coney Island one day to stare at the white, white water, as a battered ferris wheel continues to go ’round, and sings “I was strong, strong in the sun/I thought I’d see when day is done/Now I’m weaker than the palest blue/Oh, so weak in this need for you.”

Okay so I made up that story, although the lyrics are real. The soft, folksy original, from the late Nick Drake, might sound familiar, as the singer-songwriter/musician was featured on the award-winning Garden State soundtrack. Montreal-based Holobody, comprised of sister brother team Luke and Charlotte Loseth, carry on Drake’s memory with a languid experimental electronic/acoustic remix. An underlying groove resonates throughout, reminding me of how, despite our individual sadness, life continues to move on.

This remix comes of off Holobody’s debut 6-track EP MTL, released via Bad Panda Records in December 2012. You can check out the EP on Bandcamp and follow the duo on Facebook.

When James Yuill’s track “Turn Yourself Around” came across my ears, I was instantly transported back to one of my personal anthems of 2009, Mackintosh Braun’s “I Won’t Fall.” Yuill captures the trembling nature of being adrift in a synth-based track of self-discovery. And after getting to hear a few other tracks off his upcoming LP, These Spirits, I thought the best way to review a fellow “strangest boy to ever be lost in California” was to write about where his music takes me… which is a journey I feel in some ways that we are kindred spirits in.

This song could easily have been a soundtrack to the wild phase I went on the last three years. I always have had a bit of a death spirit in me (as I call it), which is a self-assured fearlessness that can be wielded toward great progress or destruction. And after the years of intense struggle that was my endeavour to finish college while poor, I was a little tired of using it for good.

Plus, I’ve always found so much life at the moment of near annihilation. So, I went nomadic, hitchhiking my heart through most of the United States; the only thing I trusted less than the permanence of human connection was an honest feeling.

I lived hand to mouth and got to explore American civilization at its most base and exhilarating natures. But since I lived by half-truths — never connecting fully with anyone — I always felt like “there was another charlatan in my walls” and I was moving horizontally when I wanted to move rhizomatically.

So, that’s the power of music right there, which Yuill’s evocative track was powerful enough to make come streaming back to me. Yuill is like an intoxicating mix between Yuksek, Mackintosh Braun, Sebastien Tellier, and Junior Boys –capturing the spirit of their experimental beats and sentimental sonicscapes into dance tracks worthy of a night drive fleeing California or gamboling through a strange discotheque in Georgia.

Yuill is raising the funds for his album via a Pledge Music campaign and if you’d like to support him you can watch a short intro about the project here. Catch These Spirits out on March 25, 2013.

I’m just going to say it: Sibille Attar’s defiant innocence can make even the most hardened of hearts a romantic. Almost. And that’s only because her vision of what constitutes real love is so purely defined that nary a cynical eye could cast a judgmental look upon it.

“Come Night” was produced by Peter Bjorn and John, and their influence is all over this. From the plinking pianos to the soaring vocals featuring unrestrained optimism in the face of defeat, this track might just be “Second Chance”‘s maudlin cousin. (You know, before the original was ruined by 2 Broke Girls. Luckily the RAC remix stays in tact!)

Still, it’s Attar’s vocal prowess that makes this song a sucker punch to the heart. Her love is full of “phone calls packed with disease/ain’t no way of living, for a believer in love.” And you can almost imagine this hopeful kissoff playing as she boards a plane to distant lands or walks towards the pier as a boat set for the New World readies to whisk her away.

If you get a chance, check out her YouTube video, featuring a neat compilation of old timey video and dance routines to a modern rhythm. It reminds me of one of my favorite music videos, The Pass’s  ”Treatment of the Sun.”

Sufjan Stevens is definitely one of the most prolific artists of the last decade. Since 2000, he’s released 18 albums (10 of them Christmas-related). One of the more bizarre was The BQE, a mostly-classical, instrumental dedication to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

Yesterday, Sufjan released a B-side to the album titled “Which One Are You?” Unlike the majority of the album, this track actually features vocals, and sounds a lot like his earlier work.

So, why didn’t it make the cut? Citing the man himself:

Old outtake from the BQE. Could not clear melody w/ ELP publishers. The Endless Enigma of intellectual property. One person’s homage is another lawyer’s annoyance, I guess.

Not entirely sure I can recognize the IP violation, but we’ll take his word for it.

Last year’s FBi Northern Lights Competition was a huge success. Won by Oliver Tank and Rainbow Chan, the finals also included Indie Shuffle favorites Flume, Tim Fitz and Caitlin Park. This year’s event was run a few months back, and one of the winners (along with Moon Holiday) was Sydney producer Lanterns (Ross James).

The two artists visited Iceland to play showcases in Reykjavik (home to Bjork and Sigur Ros), work with local musicians at the renowned Greenhouse Studios, and attend the iconic Iceland Airwaves Music Festival. You can view some of their Scandinavian tour diaries here.

One of the tracks that helped him was “Gluestick,” a delicate electronic-folk song dreamed up in James’ bedroom. Layered vocals mixed with intricate synth, sampling and guitar effects all play a part in creating Lanterns’ stunning sound.

To coincide with the single’s release, an equally incredible video clip (about a psychedelic robot love story) was created by local animator Hannah Doherty. Beauty all round.

Sounds like: Exist Strategy, Stumbleine, Owsey

Can’t say I show South Carolina much love when it comes to music blogging. In truth, I just don’t come across many memorable artists repping the state. That is until I stumbled upon Koda, a writer/singer/producer doing big things out of the state’s capital, Columbia.

The 803 must be proud of Jordan Sudak — the man behind Koda’s mask — whose moody folktronica approach to “I Will Do As Spiders Do” represents a powerful, underrepresented take on pop music. I struggle with corny lyrics, but something about Koda is too real to not be recognized.

“I Will Do As Spiders Do” is cinematic, sweeping, darkly ethereal — a song that warrants multiple listens just to fully process the scope of Koda’s talents. It’s available for purchase on Bandcamp, should you be so inclined as to support an up-and-coming artist.

Lots of good things coming out of Sweden these days, especially from Stockholm, and Urban Cone are no exception here. I would like to mention Blalock’s December IRP (for those of you who follow the site) for bringing this one to my attention as it is an absolute peach of song.

Although technically classified as an electro pop group, Urban Cone manage to display a much more delicate side to their music with “Black Ocean,” which was released on their Our Youth album in October. They’re typically an energetic group, specializing in synth-driven anthems, but on this occasion they have taken a much more minimalist approach.

I’ve always said that bands show their true class when they can write and perform a successful mellow ballad, and that is exactly what Urban Cone have done here.

What do you get when a folk singer/songwriter dapples in the electronic music world? The answer is Chords of Truth, a one-man project led by Jason Garriotte. His revamped style is a genre bending mix that deserves a listen.

Jumping from the folk world to the electronic world was a gutsy leap for Chords of Truth, but after collaborating with a number of producers, their new approaches proved appealing enough to release Chord of Truth Remixed, a double album fully equipped with sounds and vibes to escape reality.

Take “Tune Your Mind (Brandowitsch Electropopfolk Remix)” for example. Brandowitsch creates an intergalactic sound while Jason’s lyrics leave you pondering about what life is all about. The featured electronics are calculated and smooth, making for a folktronica frenzy from outer space.

We featured S O H N’s “The Wheel” back in September of this year, and now is a good time as any to resurrect them from the Indie Shuffle archives.

Combining layers of minimalist electronica with seeping, mystic vocals, this Vienna-based soloist is hot on the industry’s radar. S O H N has came out of virtually nowhere, and in mere months has taken the blogosphere by storm with his recent release of The Wheel EP. If you haven’t heard of this honest and captivating delicacy, you are in for a real treat. With only four tunes floating around the Internet for listening pleasure (including “W a r n i n g s,” which I have featured), we don’t blame you for fiending for more.

How did the formation of S O H N begin? At what point in your life did you realize this was something to pursue?
I’d been making music for years and then suddenly S O H N just appeared out of one of the tracks I was working on  - a different voice (musically) to the one I was used to came out. I suppose the answer to the second half of the question is; I’m not sure, I’ve been pursuing my sound forever – but in terms of deciding to start making music as a career, again it’s the only real thing I ever considered.

You’re still extremely new in the music industry but your sound has gone viral. What has it been like so far?
It’s been bizarre – I had been quite insulated in making my sound so I had no idea about new music websites, what was being made right now, what was popular etc. I was quite unprepared for the speed with which things have moved forward… One day “O s c i l l a t e” went up, then people were talking about it, 2 weeks later “W a r n i n g s,” then it seems like everybody in the music industry got in touch all at once. I decided to release the first EP with Aesop, and then “The Wheel” went up and it got even more intense. But I’m in Vienna still, away from all that stuff, the hype and the industry. So I’m pretty detached from it all.

In a few words, how would you describe your signature sound? 
Light, Dark, Space.

Your first tracks that were released were “O s c i l l a t e” and ” W a r n i n g s.” Tell us the thought process behind the two. 
There was none – there never is for me. I started playing around with a hardware synth that a friend lent me (I’ve just given it back to him and bought my own on ebay now) and a new drum synth I have, and the sound came together. Then I freestyled over the top, some of the words stuck, and I went back and wrote lyrics around the words. Then there is a discovery process, I read the lyrics back and realize what I’m saying, and re-work the track to fit.

What inspires your musical process?
I guess experiences in the outside world, discovery in the studio, self-discovery and images. Often tracks have images associated with them as they come together, and that affects the musical choices I make.

If you were to collaborate with someone you really look up to, who would it be and why?
I honestly have no idea – I don’t really look up to anyone in that way, I really honestly consider us all just people… saying that, Jack White would be interesting to work with…

The response to “Wheel” has been pretty impressive thus far. What has that feedback been like for you?
Yeah, it was kinda crazy. It’s been dangerous, feedback and compliments are something that as an artist I think it’s quite important to stay away from as much as you can – I used to find it quite hard dealing with criticism, and if you can’t take criticism then you shouldn’t take compliments to heart either.  People will like and dislike, that’s just how it is, and if you get excited when people like what you do you set yourself up for being upset when others dislike it. In general now I try to stay objective and calm.

What do you find you look for in a song as a listener? What does it have to have to be given your “thumbs up”?
Two things excite me in music – tricks and honesty. I love it when I hear someone do something outrageously tricky or clever within a track, but it has to also come from honesty to make me love it. What I mean by that is that I need the person who made it to feel it 100%, be it electronica, avant-garde or pop. If the people behind the song honestly feel it, the results can be so much better than the average mulch.

What are some future plans? Ideal? Realistic?
I guess the next real target is festivals next summer, choosing how/when to release an album, and some movie soundtracks would be nice. The main aim right now though is just to keep on keeping on!

The band is gearing up to release a new album titled Give In late-January, so it’s nice that we’re able to get a better picture of what we’ll hear. Mind you, we’ve now got two pretty divergent tracks…so I’m not sure whether to expect something upbeat or something mellow. It’s probably safe to say there’ll be a little bit of both?

Either way, this Chicago based band is certainly poised to continue making noise.

I’m a bit sad that I only just stumbled upon Dillon, but the masses will discover this captivating singer-songwriter and electronic artist from Berlin sooner than later.

“Thirteen Thirtyfive,” released at the end of 2011 on This Silence Kills, is raw and wistful. The sound lures us in and exists at the cross-section of other notable female musicians. There’s a resemblance to the musical and visual aesthetic of CocoRosie, the vocal plays of Regina Spektor, and a command of innocence akin to Lykke Li.

Aside from the fact that it’s quite good, I decided to share this track right now because we can eagerly look forward to a collaboration with Telefon Tel Aviv coming soon.

It’s been fun keeping tabs on Catching Flies these last few weeks. The London producer has opened a lot of eyes and ears with his ambitious debut EP, The Stars. If you’re a fan of downtempo electronica that is both dynamic and mellow, then it’s worth a listen, or twelve.

Fans of the previously hyped “Rainman” and “Sunrays“ may have already heard Catching Flies’ “Life Size Ghosts” remix. The original track is an enchanting piece of dream folk. One which Catching Flies prays proper homage to, while still taking the track in his own soulful direction.

Download The Stars for free, and look for Catching Flies’ remix to appear on the official Life Size Ghosts Remix EP early next year. While you’re at it, show Mt. Wolf a little love, too.

Sometimes a little experimentation is good. And not every Song of the Day should be cookie-cutter pop. So let me introduce to you Robert DeLong.

Robert first came to my attention via a post published on Kick Kick Snare (though they credit Glassnote Records for bringing him to the limelight). The song “Global Concepts” instantly piqued my interest, though if you’re like me, there was nothing that could prepare me for the unexpected electronic drop. Womp womp wobble? Sort of…

What will prevent this song from setting the blogosphere on fire could be its slightly jarring and disconnected nature. The rhythm is unique, but slightly disconnected. I can’t help but thinking it might benefit from a more “solid” sound, a la Avicii or Kaskade. Nonetheless, I find myself playing it over and over again. So clearly, something is working.

Here’s an artist to watch. Vienna-based UK bred artist S O H N has gifted an amazing folky electro-pop track for release November 5 via label AESOP. A new artist to the scene, this single – entitled “T H E W H E E L” – is nothing short of attention-grabbing and beautiful.

This is the kind of folky music that my electronic blazing soul can really dig. It’s soft and meaningful, all the while utilizing a melodic quality that speaks to my fundamental music inclinations. The chopped vocals start “T H E W H E E L” off with a purpose and stride, and S O H N’s Ben Gibbard-ish voice soars with eloquence and grace. All in all, a win for my musical gathering week.
