I cannot express how excited I was to discover that Foxtails Brigade covered a Jon Brion song. Ever since the movie I Heart Huckabees, I’ve held a soft spot for Jon Brion (who composed the entire movie). Considering that Foxtails Brigade is one of my new favorite bands, I was beyond ecstatic to listen to this song and watch the video, and I was not the least bit disappointed.

The Foxtails Brigade’s video for their version of “Little Person” is simply adorable and sweetly captivating. This animated piece features lead singer, Laura Weinbach, being a lonesome little person lost in the mix of this crazy world, and then discovering a creature who’s just like her. They frolic through the days, going on adventures and picnics and genuinely enjoying each other’s company.

The song itself is thick with orchestral arrangements — it’s truly a modern-day symphony of strings and Laura’s milky vocals. Foxtails Brigade have got such a gorgeous grasp on innovative orchestral folk pop that I have no doubt they are destined for great things. So do yourself a favor and listen to and watch “Little Person.” And what’s even better is that you can download this song for FREE!

“Ruminants,” Lisa Germano’s breathy waltz about digestion, is weird and beautiful and kind of sad (a musical combination that gets me pretty much every time). It’s also a real standout on her recent album, No Elephants.

I hadn’t heard of Lisa Germano before “Ruminants,” but apparently she’s been busy. No Elephants is her ninth studio album, with a handful a self-releases to add to her portfolio as well. Her prolific habit of music making is a bit of a bummer for me  insofar as  it’s daunting to discover an artist you find interesting only to learn that you’re about a dozen LPs behind in their work. But alas, while I can’t speak to her career as a whole, I can testify to the fact that upon first listen, I found “Ruminants” to be an absolutely captivating track.

Germano’s melancholic vocal delivery, the inclusion of animal noises in the song, and the strange high-pitched metallic digital drones that bubble up subtly  throughout the verses of the otherwise classical waltz all contribute to a certain peculiar ambiance and musical quality that  makes my ears stand at attention.

I love music that defies the expectations of the listener (even if just in small ways), and  ”Ruminants” does just that.  With its 3:4 waltz format, its bizarre subject material, and equally interesting production elements, “Ruminants cultivates a uniqueness that had me revisiting the track again and again.

I’m so happy to hear that Body Parts is back with a new release. “Rest While You Sleep” is an uplifting track surely able to get your spirits up.

The first thing I noticed upon first listening was that this single is very Talking Heads-esque. Even down to the vocals, the lead singer sounds very much like David Byrne, which is a very good and unique thing, in my opinion. There’s definitely a tropical vibe sprawled across this experimental, mathematical indie pop track, much like other Body Parts’ tracks. They always leave you wondering what they’re going to come up with next.

If you’re looking for a quick pick-me-up in music form, Body Parts should be your go to. They’ll be releasing a two-song single on February 19, 2013.

I swirl the wine in my glass like a nerve tonic, bathwater rippling as the candles light my stoic face. The only sounds that pierce my silence are the howling of snow hitting the window and the sound of this track to punctuate the night.

Afterwards, I crawl to my pitch-black room and lay prostate on my bed, thanking the gods no one is sleeping over, save this Sleep ∞ Over track. Sound depressing? To an introvert, that’s the most romantic night possible. After a day of extroverts exhausting me, sometimes “I don’t know why it feels like I have to sometimes get away; but [don't worry world] you know, I love you.”  I “just need to walk endlessly hand in hand with myself, somewhere on my own.” 

This cover of 1970s-era hippy-folk singer Vashti Bunyan is the best self-love song I’ve ever seen. It’s like Jon Brion soundtracked a David Lynch movie. Romantic strings swell and, for once, they aren’t about anyone else but yourself.  Disappear at will, fellow introverts! I know you’ll be back to this site to gush your love once you’ve recharged.

Give the insanely talented Sleep ∞ Over some love on their SoundCloud and buy their Rooftop 7″, out on Hippos in Tanks. Also, if you don’t read Gorilla vs. Bear, you should, as they one of my favorite blogs (other than IS, of course) that turned me onto this wonderful track.

Sometimes, I find myself stuck in a musical rut of sorts. It’s not because I get tired of music — no, never ever ever say such a thing. But rather, I become stubbornly stuck in a genre, unwilling to listen to anything that deems itself “fun synth ’80s dream pop!” Sometimes, I get burnt out by the onslaught of new music; there are just so many bands, all trying to out-weird the other while managing to sound exactly the freaking same.

I digress. You’re not here to read my rants about the glut of good-but-not-great music out there today. You’re here to listen to Kishi Bashi, a decidedly unconventional musician whose boundary breaking tendencies manage to remain interesting, enjoyable, listenable, and captivating all at once. And how his debut album, 151a, has inspired me to shake of the shrouds of cranky music critic and straight up get happy about some new, new-sounding music.

Let’s start with that aura of positivity. 151a is rife with it, from opening track “Intro/Pathos Pathos” to the folk-rock clap happy rhythms embedded in layers of vocals in the single “Bright Whites.” This is prog-rock for the feel good set, deeply thoughtful and introspective pop music with a beat you can dance to. It’s a pretty brilliant combination — so often, the most carefully constructed music loses it’s joy, while music made purely for pleasure quickly becomes vapid.

Kishi Bashi, who played and produced the entire album himself, takes a light hand on these tracks, making transitions feel seamless while slyly revealing that there is, indeed, a magic trick at play here — he is the clever magician who wants you to know that he’s having as good of a time as you are.

There are so many auditory paths to follow on this album — the exuberant vocals, the swell of strings, the crisp, driving synth of percussion. Or, you can sit back and listen to the album as a narrative whole, which, frankly, is the best way to go about it. Still, the twists and turns that 151a presents makes every listen feel like a choose-your-own-adventure story. Lucky for you,  each path seems to lead to a happy ending.

I don’t know about you, but I’m in a Foxtails Brigade kind of mood. I just received this new single by them called “Winter’s Feat,” and as usual, I’m in love.

This indie folk holiday gem comes equipped with all the trimmings: boisterous drums, eclectic strings, the perfect amount of clinks and clanks and an oh-so-sweet female vocal lead. I also absolutely love the approach Foxtails Brigade took when composing the strings section. Each instrument holds its own while playing nice as a whole. All in all, this is a sleek and flawlessly constructed song!

What do you get when a folk singer/songwriter dapples in the electronic music world? The answer is Chords of Truth, a one-man project led by Jason Garriotte. His revamped style is a genre bending mix that deserves a listen.

Jumping from the folk world to the electronic world was a gutsy leap for Chords of Truth, but after collaborating with a number of producers, their new approaches proved appealing enough to release Chord of Truth Remixed, a double album fully equipped with sounds and vibes to escape reality.

Take “Tune Your Mind (Brandowitsch Electropopfolk Remix)” for example. Brandowitsch creates an intergalactic sound while Jason’s lyrics leave you pondering about what life is all about. The featured electronics are calculated and smooth, making for a folktronica frenzy from outer space.

If you’re feeling this electronically infused remix, I recommend checking out the rest of Chords of Truth’s remixed double album. Don’t forget to put your headphones on; this is the type of music that makes your brain vibrate.

Wednesday’s a bit of a weird day to have Halloween celebrations. Most people worked around it by partying hard this last weekend, and the net result is that today, everyone’s costume is so destroyed that it’s not even worth wearing. Anywho…on to the music.

I was trying to think of something fitting of the theme to post today, but kept coming up blank. Michael Jackon’s “Thriller”? Too cliche. Something dark and gothic, like MS MR? Too uninspiring. Marilyn Manson? Lol.

A little while back, I wrote about an artist by the name of Tigermilk. The lady behind the music has released a new song under a new name, Kuky Tala. The song is called “Turi,” and it fits in perfectly with the Halloween season.

The best way to describe this freak folk track is haunting. But that’s not all. It’s also sophisticated and dark in its constructions. There are highs and lows all while holding some fairly delicate vocals. The quivering electronic effects lend a unique approach to what would otherwise be a classic droneful folk song. And as it fades out and back in, the track penetrates your eardrums with conviction and intensity.

If you’re in the mood for something orchestrally spooky, this song is for you.

AU has taken the music scene by storm this year, releasing their highly anticipated third album, Both Lights, and completing a U.S. and European tour with bands like Deerhoof, WHY?, and The Dodos. Phew!

A new video for their song, “Solid Gold,” has been recently released, and it’s a highly energetic video at that. At the start, though, it’s quite somber and calm. A choral vocal takes the lead while a piano lends complements. Soon thereafter, the wave breaks. Beautiful chaos ensues. Imagine you were in a psychotic whirlwind of all things psychedelic and wild. This uninhabited approach is one that requires much attention to detail and imagination. AU’s got that covered.

In case you were feeling deprived of some seizure-inducing music, Animal Collective last night released a new single “Today’s Supernatural,” set to be released on their upcoming album Centipede Hz. By all accounts, this will be their 11th album since 2000.

For those of you in the know, you’ll be aware that this isn’t the first song we’ve heard off the album. Back in May the group released a split 7″ in that included two tracks: “Gotham” and “Honeycomb.” To boot, they practically debuted the entire album during their 2011 live tour.

Woods is coming out with their seventh album soon, but this their debut on Indie Shuffle. Looks like we’ve got a lot of catching up to do!

Technically, Brooklyn’s Woods have been at it since 2005, but it wasn’t until 2009 that Woods received critical acclaim for their album, Songs Of Shame. Now, Woods is still on a roll and ready to release their next album, Bend Beyond, on September 18.

Their debut single, “Cali In A Cup,” is a light-hearted all-American folk pop jam that paints a picture of life and its many seasons. The song may be left to your own interpretation, but one thing I know for sure is the fact that this well-versed song may very well appeal to the majority of folk lovers. Sure, the instrumentals are catchy and upbeat, but the lyrics and message portray a darker, possibly existential message. It is that contrast that makes this song so attractive — not all stories or messages with a heavy undertone need to be translated as such with the music. Woods proves this to be true.

We have only scratched the surface with Woods. If you liked this track then I’d suggest delving into their previous albums and let yourself get lost for awhile. Stay tuned for this wildly talented band’s new album, Bend Beyond, to drop on September 18!

Technically, Brooklyn’s Woods have been at it since 2005, but it wasn’t until 2009 that Woods received critical acclaim for their album, Songs Of Shame. Now, Woods is still on a roll and ready to release their next album, Bend Beyond, on September 18.

Their debut single, “Cali In A Cup,” is a light-hearted all-American folk pop jam that paints a picture of life and its many seasons. The song may be left to your own interpretation, but one thing I know for sure is the fact that this well-versed song may very well appeal to the majority of folk lovers. Sure, the instrumentals are catchy and upbeat, but the lyrics and message portray a darker, possibly existential message. It is that contrast that makes this song so attractive — not all stories or messages with a heavy undertone need to be translated as such with the music. Woods proves this to be true.

We have only scratched the surface with Woods. If you liked this track then I’d suggest delving into their previous albums and let yourself get lost for awhile. Stay tuned for this wildly talented band’s new album, Bend Beyond, to drop on September 18!

Generally, I don’t like the Dirty Projectors. I’m not even sure I should be sharing this track…but at this point it’s pretty clear that the band has a solid following. To boot, I don’t actually hate this song too much.

The band has been going at it since 2002, and are on the verge of releasing a new album titled Swing Low Magellan. “Dance For You” is the second single we’ve heard (behind “Gun Has No Trigger”)…and beyond featuring some great clapping, there’s an awesome bridge halfway through. Frankly, it’s the meat and potatoes of this post, and what keeps me listening.

Tigermilk is the creation of Paulina Tala. There’s a lot to be heard from Paulina’s musical approach. It’s spotty, obscure, and yet sophisticated with a roughly beaten path that she formed herself.

“Talátur” is Tigermilk’s single taken from her upcoming Turi EP. It’s sleek, spooky and soft, and the haunting and silky vocals are bound to resonate within you. The orchestration of instruments blend together in such a way that, as off-kilter as this track may sound, it’s still gorgeous and sophisticated. The track fades in to what seems like a drum & flute circle. In comes the eerie harmonies which closely resembles perhaps a chant or ritualistic verse.

There are many shifts within “Talátur” — at times it is thick with instruments interweaving and other times it calms enough to easily piece together the roles that each instruments has adopted. This song encapsulates a blend of classically old folk with modernized avant-garde dark folk.

Keep a look-out for Tigermilk’s upcoming Turi EP; I think it’ll be a tasteful yet strangely skewed masterpiece.

I really don’t know much about MV & EE, besides the fact that they’re a duo from Vermont and they’re into celestial psychedelic experimentalism. Can you dig it?

MV & EE’s single, “Sweet Sure Gone” is the perfect track for a chilled out sunny day. There’s a huge emphasis on their lax approach to music making in every aspect of the song: the instruments sound as if they’re being played in slow motion, the drums are just barely there, the harmonies are free and easy, and a thick, slow echo covers the lead vocals. This combination is sure to help you hang loose whether you’re sober or not. It’s the type of track that helps you slow down and breathe deeply… and we all need that.

The track ends as quickly as it comes, as if the breeze carried it in and took it away in passing. If you’re jonesing for some more laid back psychedelia, grab a copy of MV & EE’s album Space Homestead and prepare to melt away.

The duo known as CocoRosie have a bit of a reputation for, well, freakish music. And so, it’s no surprise that their new song “We Are On Fire” leans toward the experimental side of things.

Produced by Dave Sitek of TV On The Radio, “We Are On Fire” has hints of trip-hop, and almost seems to call the Cherokee roots of the sister-duo Sierra and Bianca Casady. Overall, a darker track, but still good for a listen or three.
