Cool stuff here! The four artists featured in this playlist fought through a two-week promotional storm and rallied their fans to end as the highest rated in the San Francisco segment of Pop Up Live. They are now invited to stage a Pop Up Live gig for their fans at a cool and unexpected location, and shoot a video to document the story of their pop up live gigs.

One band from each city with the best video, as judged by Indie Shuffle and a panel of other experts, will win an additional $1000 and opportunity to go to Austin’s premiere music festival in March!

Downloads from all bands continue to be available until October 31st at http://popchi.ps/popuplive.

What's so good?

It’s one of those weeks again on Fresh Meat where I can’t seem to pinpoint a theme to tie all these wonderful songs to one another. So instead of searching for a wacky theme that might be lame, I’ve just decided to just say that this round-up includes songs that have really caught my attention this week.

The tracks on this week’s playlist are the one’s that I was instantly drawn to at first listen, and wanted to play again on repeat because I was hooked so quickly. This week’s list includes songs that affected me so much, I never stopped to think, “Maybe I’ll save this for a week with another theme.” It’s an eclectic round-up, but it’s one that will make you really listen and reflect on each song before jumping to the next.

We’re throwing in everything from heavy layering to simple harmonizing, a little bit of hip hop and as always, instruments that you can’t get enough of. Very little will be left out, so hopefully there’s something special this week for everyone.

What's so good?

After a week hiatus and a few technical glitches, Fresh Meat is back in business. For a while now, I have been wanting to dedicate an entire round-up to a few wonderful international artists. It’s truly amazing how many talented submissions we receive from places near and far, and though I’ve featured international artists previously, I thought it would be fun to devote an entire playlist to these particular bands.

Make sure to pay close attention to the various techniques, vocals, and instruments heard in all of the songs featured this week. Whenever I hear an artist that is not from the U.S., I like to figure out what the key differences are that distinguish them. Whether it is the way a particular note sounds when it’s being sung, an instrument used that may not be commonly heard, or simply the genre frequently heard from one particular geographic location, there are both subtle and evident differences.

Enjoy these awesome tunes from all over the world, and if you’re reading this from somewhere overseas, be sure to check out additional information on the featured artists to see if they’re playing near you!

Enjoy these awesome tunes from all over the world, and if you’re reading this from somewhere overseas, be sure to check out additional information on the featured artists to see if they’re playing near you!

What's so good?

Ahhh, Fourth of July. An excuse for sparklers, barbecues, and perfecting that old American accent. Independence Day is also the only time it’s somewhat acceptable to wear a red-and-blue-striped ensemble. But more importantly, it is the perfect weekend to blast all those timeless American tunes.

Whether you’re looking to really show off your pride by playing “The National Anthem” on repeat, or Mom and Dad take over the iPod and start reminiscing about songs of the past, music is essential to make this upcoming weekend a hell of a celebration.

So for this week’s Fresh Meat playlist, I thought it would be fitting to have a round-up of songs that you can have playing all holiday weekend long. To me, folk or rock-inspired tunes are a great representation of an American classic. Whether the song is an acoustic rendition, features amazing harmonizing instruments, or is just vocally appealing, this week’s playlist is all about pleasing the ear.

I did my best to choose songs that could be enjoyed by all ages. (Okay, there may be one or two that not everyone you’re with will like, but I tried.) The songs on this playlist may not be the typical tracks you’d expect to be bumping, but I promise they really are all great for a relaxing long weekend.

What's so good?

We were fortunate enough to feature the very talented Jhameel on the debut Fresh Meat playlist, where he received endless amounts of praise for his insanely catchy tune “The Human Condition.” And now, Indie Shuffle recently had the privilege to pick apart Jhameel’s brain to learn more about his inspiration for his latest album, The Human Condition, and to find out how truly talented this one-man band really is.

How did you get involved with music initially?
My dad was a fairly well known violinist in the eighties, so he started me on playing it when I was a kid. I was terrible at it, so I quit, and picked up trumpet instead. After that, I started singing and writing music, so I taught myself a few other instruments, and eventually even came back to violin as well. I haven’t stopped since.

What genre(s) of music would you classify your music as?
I like to incorporate elements of a lot of genres, but I would classify my music as mostly pop. I have stages though, for example in this dance EP I’m releasing for the summer I have a lot of disco/ James Brown influence. For The Human Condition, I was intrigued with funk, a little bit of rock, and soft indie pop. I try to put it all in the context of my own aesthetic though.

Do you have any strong musical influences who you gather creative inspiration from?
I get a lot of inspiration listening and watching the old legends: Prince, James Brown, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Queen etc. I try to learn from them and bring the energy, power, and communication that they execute and incorporate it into both my recordings and my live shows.

Have you released anything prior to The Human Condition?
I released an album prior to The Human Condition. It was a self-titled album, and had a very mellow sound. I consider it a very introspective album, making sense of my life up until that point, whereas The Human Condition is an extroverted album, expressing my values and what I believe to be some of the most intrinsic elements of being a human being.

What can listeners expect to hear in The Human Condition? What inspired you for this album?
One thing I hope listeners will notice is the amount of attention to detail. I put a lot of care into making sure every single moment of the album offers something. What inspired me most was the fact that I was learning and experiencing a lot of things I’d never experienced before, and I wanted to express the excitement and diversity of what I was going through. I felt some of the most intense joys of my life, and some of the most painful stings as well.

Each song off The Human Condition has a very distinct and unique sound to it — what exactly are all the instruments heard, and how do you blend them together so well?
I’d say some of the main instruments in the album are guitar, trumpet, piano, drums, violin, cello, synth, and bass. They blend nicely because of the way I choose the instruments. It’s never arbitrary, most of the time one instrument will fit much nicer than any other, so the decision kind of makes itself. I always say a song will “call for” a certain sound, and if it’s necessary, I will learn how to play a certain instrument just to incorporate that one sound.

The entire album is amazing, but one of my favorite songs is “Bernal Heights.” I love the raw lyrics blended with the the sounds, and I think it’s a very powerful song. If you had to pick one song off The Human Condition that was your favorite to write or record, what would it be?
The title track, “The Human Condition” was definitely my favorite to record. It took me some hard work and frustration to arrange, but that song was a milestone for my writing experience. It allowed me to expand what kind of genres I could blend, while still maintaining pop sensibility. It’s also just a funny story that I thought of it in the shower and ran out to record it.

If you could pick any musician to perform on stage live with, who would it be and why?
Sigur Ros. I connect very deeply with their sound, and I think it would be such a powerful experiencing playing some of their music with them.

What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment and also most difficult challenge in the making of The Human Condition?
I think my biggest challenge was to make sure that every song was completely distinct, but still appropriate within the context of the CD. I wanted to make an album that flows, but constantly offers surprises. My biggest accomplishment was the absolute joy of being able to convey all the emotions I was feeling accurately.

Any upcoming tours in the next few months?
I am planning one, but it’s not planned enough yet to announce. It’s coming though.

What's so good?

Each week on Fresh Meat, I try to have some cohesive theme that ties together the featured songs. Sometimes however, it is a bit difficult to stick to one specific genre or theme, and instead a variety of songs are featured… which is exactly what is happening this week. So instead of grasping for straws, this week’s round-up is essentially a variety of indie genres. Hey, what better music to feature with a name like Indie Shuffle?

Sure, you can throw the word “indie” in front of most genres (i.e. pop, rock, electronic, alternative) and call it indie. But there is a certain sound — whether it’s the vocals, the instruments of choice, or the lyrics — that also gives a track that certain indie cred. Granted, a song chosen for this week’s playlist could be considered indie rock to me and not to someone else, but regardless, there is an array of sounds featured here.

A few of this week’s songs should lift your spirits and put you in a light mood for summer. You’ll also be sure to hear melodious vocals, crisp electronic beats, and an overall roundup of fresh instruments. As always, these emerging artists prove to be another batch of awesome, new talent!

What's so good?

Whether you’re a dancer looking for your next piece of music to perform to, a rapper looking for a raw beat to rhyme to, or a jam band who wants to show off their talent, instruments are the true essence of a song. They are the backbone to what makes a person want to shake their thing and dance. They inspire a person to sing and add poetry to a beat. They are the reason why someone decides they want to take up piano or guitar lessons, so that one day they could be as good as what they hear being played.

I’ve decided to change up this week’s Fresh Meat playlist a bit by featuring some amazing instrumental songs that have recently been submitted to us. I sometimes find that there are moments when lyrics really take away from the beauty of a song, and that it truly needs nothing more than the playing of instruments in their rawest form.

The songs that I have chosen for this week’s round-up are extremely inspiring and talented. Regardless of the genre they may fall into, each instrumental song is timeless and pure, and made me think about how talented each artist is. Not to mention, each song also illustrates how passionate that artist is to be able to combine such sweet-sounding music without much to accompany it. So I hope you all appreciate them as much as I have!

What's so good?

I woke up this morning really looking forward to the upcoming weekend. So much that I decided I needed to put on fist-pumping, crip-walking jams while getting ready for the day. (Disclaimer:There was no fist pumping or c-walking in front of my mirror, I promise.)

Okay, so maybe I just was looking for something to listen to that would put me into a great mood and get me through the rest of this week. I often turn to bands like Vampire Weekend and The Bravery for the right amount of “pumping up” without actually requiring me to do any more more than a little toe tap along to the beat. And sometimes, when those bands still aren’t giving me that necessary edge, I’ll throw on a favorite Lil’ Wayne or Kid Cudi song.

So for this week’s Fresh Meat, I’ve put together a round up of new music that has been doing exactly what my favorite veteran artists can do. Each artist on this week’s playlist, whether in the electro pop or hip hop genre, have the ability to put me in the perfect “ready for the weekend” mood. There’s a variety of beats to hear, but in my opinion all do a great job to represent their genre. As always, I hope you enjoy the sounds heard on this week’s Fresh Meat!

What's so good?

Happy June ya’ll! It’s a glorious month for new music.

Since it’s officially summer, you’ll begin hearing singles for all those new albums that are sure to be taking over your stereo for the next few months. Sure, it’s fun to anticipate your favorite artists’ new releases, but when you find it’s time to change up the beat a bit with some fresh, emerging artists, you know where to turn. FRESH MEAT!

For this week’s Fresh Meat playlist, I’ve picked a few songs that are good for those moments when you need a break from the summer heat and radio hits. All of the songs on this round-up have catchy introductions that initially caught my attention. I was drawn to some of the songs for their passionate instrumentals and was drown to others for their raw beats and unique, poppy sounds.

Hope you all enjoy the fresh beats of Fresh Meat during this wonderful first week of June!

What's so good?

Every now and then, you’re bound to have one of “those” days. You know, where you start the day off on the wrong foot — spilling your coffee or missing your train — and you think to yourself, “Ugh. This is one of those days, huh?”

Whenever I’m having a day like that, I turn to music to put me back on track and just hope the rest of the day will turn around. I usually put on a more mellow playlist — it tends to bring back my sanity a lot quicker than techno house music.

So for this week’s Fresh Meat playlist, I’ve decided to go down a more chill and relaxed route for when you’re having a “meh” moment. A couple of the songs are more dreamy and chillwave, focusing more on the blending of sounds, while the others emphasize the beauty of a sweet-sounding voice with acoustic instruments.

Sometimes I find that simple sounds and mellowed beats are all I need in a song to make it something worth listening to, which is what you’ll find on this week’s round-up. And if nothing else, I hope this playlist turns one of those coffee-spilling days into a “free cup of coffee at your favorite cafe” days.

What's so good?

I envy lyrical geniuses. There are certain musicians who have a remarkable way with words, and their songs are brilliant because they’re pure poetry — poetry with a beat. Whatever the genre may be, I’ve always been the type of person who listens to the words and then the rhythm when I first hear a song. I think it says a lot about the artist and their music, and their ability to find the right instruments to compliment the lyrics is just as crucial.

So for this week’s Fresh Meat round-up, I’m featuring some talented new submissions that first caught my attention because of their wordplay. Each artist, equally talented in their own genre, has found the perfect balance of making the instruments heard without overpowering their song’s meaning. Although vocals and instruments can make or break a good tune, to me the lyrics are just as essential.

This week’s playlist highlights everything from hip hop and calming acoustics to unique instruments and layered indietronic… and anything in between. Though there are a variety of sounds, the powerful lyrics in each song are the general common ground for this round-up!

What's so good?

Happy first week of May! Whether you’re a student who’s wrapping up the school year with those dreaded final exams, or you’ve been busy putting in your hours at work to get some extra summer vacation time, you definitely need some great music to accompany you along the way.

This time of the year it is very hard to stay concentrated, but until that final school bell rings or that long weekend trip is in sight, we must stay focused. What better way to crunch numbers in your cubicle or attempt to memorize the periodic table than with music?

So for this week’s Fresh Meat round-up, I’ve attempted to put together a playlist that will give you that kick of inspiration so you don’t oversleep that 7:30am final, or decide to take use a sick day from work to play a round of golf. Some powerhouse vocals or a funky beat is sometimes all I need to keep on keepin’ on.

So I’ve sifted through tons of awesome emails and put together a round-up of songs that range in sounds, all in hopes of helping you oget through the first few weeks of spring. This week, you’ll hear everything from psychedelic guitar solos to catchy pop beats and folk-inspired mellow vocals.

What's so good?

I’m always looking for those perfect songs that are good for everyday soundtracks. Sure, we all have those designated tunes we put on for certain moments — road trips, workouts, heartbreaks, dance parties, the lists are endless. But I often find that I need more of those “everyday feel good” songs that I can play at any moment.

You know the genre I’m talking about. The songs that are perfect for commutes to work and school. The songs that give you that inspiration to complete that never-ending to do list that’s been haunting you. And they are the ones that can give you just the right amount of energy during your midday slump so that you don’t have to ever consider if those 5-Hour Energy drinks actually work.

So for this week’s Fresh Meat playlist, I’ve decided to feature some songs that I think could be ideal for the moments when you’re struggling to find a great track that can fit your various moods. The artists on this round-up blend the perfect amount vocals with instruments without it being too much or too little of either. In the most ironic, yet intentional way, they can both calm you down or keep you going like the Energizer Bunny. Hopefully you’ll enjoy and see what I mean once you listen!

What's so good?

I’ve always loved catchy music that’s easy to dance to. I’m all about infectious beats and melodies, and love when I find myself literally bopping my head to a song (regardless of the fact that it might be extremely cliché).

And no, I’m not talking about indulging in guilty pop pleasures, although we all have them. I’m talking about those catchy, electronic, synth-inspired layered tunes, where the beat will still be playing in your head even after the song is over.

When I was looking for songs for this week’s Fresh Meat playlist, I realized that, unlike most weeks, this round-up may have some rhyme and reason to it. Maybe it’s just because summer is on the horizon, or simply because these are a few songs that I just couldn’t get out of my head. Though the songs are all very different, they all use layered sounds and electronic beats to produce some pretty cool music.

If you don’t feel comfortable having a solo dance party in public, at the very least you should engage in some toe-tapping or air drumming to these songs. Or, grab some friends and declare a dance-off. Hope you enjoy!

What's so good?

The warm weather is starting to creep up all around the globe, even though it may still feel like Christmas was yesterday (or is that just me who thinks time really does fly?), but spring is finally upon us. I’ve recently decided to hang up my cold-weathered, somber songs that get me through winter and bring out those tunes that I just can’t get enough of in the spring and summertime.

The change in weather calls for a round-up of tunes that will pump you up for spring and lead you to those blissful summer days. With that said, I thought it was only fitting to do the same on this week’s Fresh Meat playlist.

Although some of the songs aren’t the most conventional tune you hear when you think of blue skies and sunshine, they should definitely have you counting down until it’s completely acceptable to only wear flip flops. There is a variety of both vocals and instruments featured on this week’s playlist. Some of the artists focus on making their voices heard with a more soft-sounding background, while others integrate the instruments to play a key role in making the song more powerful.

Hopefully this week’s round-up brings that upbeat kick you needed for the rest of the week and spring season. And here’s hoping that April showers really will bring May flowers.

What's so good?

Another week come and gone, another batch of fresh music. As much as I’ve tried to have some order and method to this playlist, I’m realizing it’s harder to stick to one genre each week than it is to have a random assortment of jams. But hey, everyone needs a little spice to shuffle up their weekly routine, right?

So, since there is no particular method to the madness of this round-up, I’ve selected five songs that I just can’t get enough of this week. The Kickback makes me nostalgic for lazy, crazy summer days. Both Tiny Danza and Smokey Robotic make me want to stop what I’m doing and bust a move right in the middle of the streets. Balto’s emotional ballad makes me yearn for a European adventure. And I can only dream of ever having powerhouse vocals like those heard in Bluebell.

Each artist brings their own unique sound to this week’s playlist, and they are all talented emerging acts you should keep your eye on and track their next move. I hope you enjoy the tracks as much as I do!

What's so good?

It’s Wednesday! Time to put away those “hump day” blues with our latest round-up of new tunes. This week’s Fresh Meat post features an array of sounds from five very different but equally talented artists. Since we receive such a variety of submissions in our inboxes every day, it’s only fair to give attention to as many genres of music as we can.

For this week, I’ve decided to bring together a hodgepodge of songs that highlight different voices and instruments. Although a few of the songs are a little on the slow side, they are unforgettably catchy in their own way.

You’ll be sure to hear everything from upbeat, dream-pop rhythms and electronic, layered sounds to beautiful harmonizing and acoustics. Each song will give you a new, fresh flavor to explore. There truly is something on this week’s round-up for everyone — so enjoy!

Also, congrats to Bryan Mojica for designing the awesome logo you see alongside this post! Not only is he a great designer, but he knows his music as well. Check out some of his live show reviews and interviews here!

What's so good?

Every week at Indie Shuffle, we get tons of great submissions from artists all over the globe who are looking to have their music heard. It’s impossible to sort through all of these emails, but sometimes we are impressed by the quality of the music. Tracks submitted via email have often found their way onto our site via Song of the Day, but we’ve been wanting to figure out how to share MORE fresh music with y’all.

Well, we figured it out! Welcome to Fresh Meat, our weekly round-up playlist of fun, new tunes that will have you coasting through the day. This is our debut column, so we’re open to feedback (comment below).

Also, we are looking for someone to design this column’s logo! It needs to incorporate the idea of the title – “Fresh Meat: Weekly Inbox Round-Up” — in a creative way (with square dimensions). Winners will be the proud owner of 50 crisp dolla dolla bills (or, you know, an exciting wire transfer/paper check). Some ideas for logos could include: a fork piercing a pulsing musical note, a mailbox made out of meat filled with new music, etc. etc. Ignore our ideas completely if you want… just have fun with it and make it relevant!

Deadline to submit your logo is this SUNDAY, MARCH 27.

Send submissions to hannah@indieshuffle.com.
