N.Y. resident DJ Anubus takes this edit of the classic 1998 hit “Like It Like That” by A Tribe Called Quest and delivers it in a funky new way that is both unexpected and refreshing. With this track, Anubus artfully combines a mixture of funk, soul, hip-hop, and peppers in grooves that make you wanna get on the dance floor. Leave it to this guy to throw down “some smooth ass moombah to get people to rub their nasty bits on each other.” Cheers to that!

Since learning that Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner was a reluctant solo artist on last years’ Golden Age of Apocalypse, I was expecting the next solo effort from the bass prodigy to come a few years down the line. I was wrong. Thundercat returns this June with Apocalypse, produced by Brainfeeder general Flying Lotus.

After a difficult year that included the loss of close friend and collaborator Austin Peralta, I would not have guessed a Thundercat album would sound like Apocalypse. The energy on Apocalypse makes its predecessor sound a bit meek. Thundercat is singing with more confidence, his voice has more of a presence in the mix and his personality shines through stronger than before in his lyrics and performance. Many of the songs are incredibly celebratory and the initial single, “Heartbreaks + Setbacks,” was downright poppy.

With musicians of Thundercat and Lotus’ pedigree, it would be inaccurate to call their first LP as a snoozer, but in the continuum they are creating the sound they presented on Golden Age was definitely in its infancy and is growing up on Apocalypse. The funk is fuller and the grooves are deeper. This is still music for music junkies, for the jazz heads and the beat aficionados, but you don’t need to be any of the previous to dig it.

Yesterday, the Internet won. We all were utterly flabbergasted when we caught wind of the leaked full stream of Daft Punk’s newest album, Random Access Memories. For me, it will be one of those days that will forever be burned in my memory as to where I was, what I was doing, and the feeling I felt as I listened to Random Access Memories all the way through — a week early. Despite the early reviews, and all the critics, I was, and still am, in awe.

One track that stuck out for me was “Lose Yourself To Dance,” featuring Pharrell Williams. If you watched the Collaborator videos, you probably heard that Daft Punk was intentionally aiming to do something different, something timeless, something that reached back in time to capture the simple essence of live instrumentation, and with “Lose Yourself to Dance” they have encompassed just that — a super funky and warm track that is something amazing.

The only other thing left to say is “press play, and again, and again.”

I know we are all going crazy with Daft Punk madness as we anxiously await the release of Random Access Memories. Whether it’s scrutinizing the authenticity of releases or waiting for surprise appearances at musical festivals, we are all caught up in the hype. And why not? It’s been a long time coming.

This excitement has also carried over to producers and other musicians (See Daughter’s cover of “Get Lucky“ or Drop Out Orchestra’s edit).

Today we are premiering another take on “Get Lucky” by our favorite Dallas producer, Neo-Safari. Neo-Safari has hopped in his DeLorean and taken “Get Lucky” straight back to 1997, making the track sound like it could have been a B-side from Homework. He minimized the vocals of Pharrell, and filled the track with some 70s-infused electric guitar care of some samples taken from Vanderway’s edit — all while managing to make the track hit just a little bit harder than the original. This is definitely a winner.

So until Random Access Memories drops, enjoy this time warp of a remix. Long live French house!

We’re enjoying this remix that The Tailors have done of 70s legend George Benson’s “Give Me The Night.”

Given the direction a lot of house music has been moving in lately, it makes sense to refer to one of the original fathers of funk. That’s exactly what the Dutch duo has done, creating a track that sits between deep house and nu disco, bringing the 70s classic up to contemporary standards.

For those who aren’t familiar with Australian radio station Triple J’s segment “Like A Version,” each week a band is asked to perform a song of their choosing live on air. Previously, we’ve seen things like Grizzly Bear covering Hot Chip, Ben Folds doing the Postal Service, and just last year, Bon Iver performed Anaïs Mitchell’s “Coming Down” (which Hannah featured here).

Sometimes bands butcher versions of songs to the point of blasphemy, but today’s edition is actually excellent. Triple J hosted Tame Impala (on an Australian national tour currently), and they put together a beautiful cover of Outkast’s “Prototype,” from the duo’s Grammy-winning 2003 album Speakerboxxx / The Love Below.

A great cover, in my opinion, doesn’t stray too far from the original, but has definite features of the performing band. I’m sure you’ll agree this one was carried out to perfection. From the funky bassline, the Kevin Parker/Nick Allbrook vocal combination, and the throbbing guitar riffs, Tame Impala get my thumbs up.

This just got me remembering how excellent this Outkast album truly was. Big Boi, Andre 3000… where are you? It’s been too long.

I’ve been posting a lot of remixes lately, but I really can’t help it when there are so many talented remix artists out there. This time, Aussie duo Phonatics steps up to the plate to take on Dragonette’s latest single “My Legs” in what was a remix competition set up by Dragonette herself. The duo describe themselves as “One Tall Dude and One Shorter Dude,” which is an interesting little bio if I do say so myself.

This is probably the standout remix by far, and I’m definitely not just saying that because they’re Australian. The duo have slowed the track down and flooded it with loads of funk and with the addition of some disco guitar lines and jazz piano. The whole arrangement complements Dragonette’s signature vocals perfectly, and I’m sure that she’s enjoying the remix just as much as I am.

It’s always a little unfair to say you like a cover better than a classic, but I’m going to be a little unfair.

It’s true, Daft Punk serves as the sole inspiration, but Dr.Fresch’s “Something About Us” layers deep house digitalism with smooth vocals and jazzy riffs for a cover that’s surprisingly refreshing; essentially, it’s an ode to the more human evolution we can expect to hear on Random Access Memories.

Janelle Monáe is a hero of mine. Transgressed against for her sexuality by a cast of characters in a deeply patriarchal music genre, Monáe never shied away from the scene. Instead, she got the last laugh by releasing the now classic album, The ArchAndroid. On that LP, Monáe re-imagined herself cyborgean, transcending the human body and traditional identities to become a new kind of being, albeit one that struggled with emotion.

It was an album that came into my life as I needed to instill courage in myself to deal with a similar set of issues as Monáe, and it meant the world to me. In fact, “Cold War” is still my 7th favorite song of all time — yeah, I said all time.

“Q.U.E.E.N,” from the upcoming Electric Lady project, finds Monáe as defiant as ever and willing to finally (at least in part) engage with some of those struggles around her queer identity (among other things). The song was inspired by conversations that she continues to have with humanist goddess Erykah Badu, who is prominently featured. Overall, it comes across as anthemic as Monáe has ever been.

“Q.U.E.E.N.” is the perfect “fuck you” track to the close minded haters that litter the American public sphere. I’ll be honest y’all: I didn’t know whether to cry or dance or both the first time I heard the song. It’s just so beautiful for me…I missed Ms. Monáe so much.

If you think Kelis’ new song “Call One Me” sounds a bit like TV On The Radio, you’re not mistaken! That’s because Dave Sitek, guitarist and producer for the band, has put his magic touch on the single (he’s the same guy who produced the Yeah Yeah Yeahs new album Mosquito).

Kelis hasn’t released an album since 2010′s Flesh Tone, but this new single is a strong indication that she’s got something up her sleeves. Rumor has it there are actually *two* releases planned for 2013, but that’s all unconfirmed at this point…

Prepare to pinch your nostrils tightly, because this just reeks of funk.

Tuxedo, who we pretty much know nothing about, has an unreal little EP on their SoundCloud page. It consists of three songs that are sure to fire up some stanky-legs, hip-thrusts, and maybe even a worm or two at your next after hours party. Trust me, I can attest from experience.

When jamming out to “Do It,” it’s hard not to hear the similarities to Chromeo, Mayer Hawthorne, Hall and Oates, and even a little JT. I realize likening an unknown to legends is a bit of a stretch, and c’mon, they only have 273 Twitter followers! But honestly, who cares? Sometimes the music is all that matters, and Tuxedo can consider me hooked.

Soulful nomad Coultrain returns to his Seymour Liberty narrative with his full length album Jungle Mumbo Jumbo on Plug Research. The homie Kenny Fresh of Fresh Selects gives us the context around the first single, “Streams & Rivers”:

“Streams & Rivers” - a song which embodies 1 of the 7 different female characters that Seymour encounters throughout the course of the album. Following up on the found material, mixtape style of the story’s previous chapter, GodMustBeABoogieMan, and the vintage loops of his debut, The Adventures Of…, Jungle Mumbo Jumbo takes Seymour’s journey in new sonic directions, with strictly original production and live instrumentation found throughout, mostly leaning in a Latin-inspired, psych-jazz direction.”

Below, Coultrain himself explains the deliberate purpose behind the timing of “Streams and Rivers” as well as Jungle Mumbo Jumbo:

“This year, the spring equinox falls on March 20th. The March equinox happens when the sun crosses the celestial equator – an imaginary line around the sky above Earth’s equator moving south to north. The equinox is a time of fertility and creation. It’s a time to clarify desires, to set intentions, and also a time to plant seeds for the future. This is a time to celebrate. A time of rebirth and renewal. To celebrate it, the first single from Coultrain’s latest offering, Jungle Mumbo Jumbo, will be released. It is entitled “Streams & Rivers.” It was composed by Jason “The Dirty Lynt” Moore, with additional instrumentation by I, Ced and Erik Rico. It is the story of a poetess who is entrapped in the ever elusive arms of her heart’s desire, Seymour Liberty, this is the story on the surface anyway. It also draws many other underlying themes, those of which you must allow your imagination to decide.

The album’s release date is April 23rd. The number 23 has held a mystique that has lasted for centuries: the number “2” being division, male and female, day and night and wisdom in Hebrew esoteric philosophy. The number “3” being the Holy Trinity, the essence of all things, for time consist of past, present and future, male and female are made of spirit, soul and body, space is defines by height width and depth. The number ”5” being the key to the entire system, is intimately related to the Pyramid, the perfect 5th in music, the five senses in man being taste, smell, touch, sight and hearing. and 2 + 3 = 5, they are one in the same. So from the number of vertebrae in a human spine, to the number of chromosomes each parent contributes to create life, to the number of grandmasters of the knights templars, to the law of fives, the number of the latin alphabet has 23 letters. its significance can go on and on, it is an enigma. the magic of this date is boundless.”

Charles Bradley has always had a certain amount of “hurt” in his tunes. His voice crumbles as he sings about loss and sorrow, but on this new album, it feels even more real.

The Dap-Kings file in line behind Bradley perfectly, giving a blend of funk and emotion that makes Victim of Love beautiful. On this single, “Strictly Reserved For You,” the rhythm line is slow and steady, with some nice breakdowns and backup vocals echoing the song title. What an awesome sound.

I always end up coming around on any Daptone record, but this one really hits you immediately.

Friday Five: Future Dance Ft. Rudimental, Skream + More

It’s a happy deep house dance Friday. Kickin’ off the vibe is Skream’s remix of Rudimental’s “Hell Could Freeze” featuring Angel Haze. We’ve posted some shimmering nu-disco, some rap-rave nu-disco, but I believe this is a first for dirty nu-disco. The track has that old-school thriller bouncing bass, while pulsating to a peak with Angel Haze’s future verses as an extra bonus.

Skream also works his new nu-disco magic into Duke Dumont ‘s addictive “Need U (100%)” featuring A*M*E, which necessitates throwing a roller skate rave in Miami under glow-in-the-dark-stars. I feel like finding a scrunchie and pulling out my favorite childhood t-shirt which had a neon screen print of “hot hot hot” running down the front.

To make matters funkier, Hannes Fischer brings a slick, deep house remix of Jamiroquai’s “Too Young Too Die.” It’s a perfect pairing of breezy bird-song and dance.

Wild Heron keeps up the playful groove with “Magnum.” I had to bring the producer back for today’s collection because this track needs more listens. I have a love connection with Bad Panda Records and it’s because of gems such as this. The facetious bass endlessly charms the dancefloor.

To close out Friday Five, I’d like to introduce Anushka from Giles Peterson’s Brownswood label. The duo of Max Wheeler and Victoria Port seeps up from UK’s distinct, future bass life-line, while producing a rhythmic and soulful sound of their own on title-track “Yes Guess.” Look forward to their EP, debuting this April 15, 2013.

Representing a synthesis of disparate musical forms, Slim Charles wears their influences proudly, even as they carve out a sound that is distinctively their own. Traces of math rock, indie, space rock and funk are all apparent, but Slim Charles does not fit neatly into any category. As one might expect, juggling these different styles (often in the span of one song) requires a considerable amount of technical skill. Fortunately, each band member — vocalist/guitarist Dom Green, guitarist Ben Mickelson, bassist Ken Siu and drummer Alex Jarvis — brings a healthy portion of chops to the table.

Yet on debut LP, Versus Fatso Jr, Slim Charles never gets bogged down in vacant pyrotechnics, playing with as much heart as brains. They possess the rare ability to challenge listeners in a manner not incongruous with good, solid hooks. Fan-favorite track “Triangulate” simultaneously serves as a testament to the band’s songwriting talent and impeccable musicianship.

It begins with a syncopated guitar figure which introduces the song’s off-kilter time signature and foreshadows its subsequent vocal refrain. A second guitar soon joins in, working organically off its predecessor in a manner recalling the restrained, yet skillful, interplay of virtuosic post-punk musicians like Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell circa Television. This guitar-focused verse of sorts soon gives way to a hypnotic, forceful chanting of the phrase: “Hey you, trying, make moves triangulate,” the melody and cadence of which repeats several times throughout the song with similarly enigmatic lyrics.

In tying emotional resonance and philosophical weight to an empirical spacial concept, Green calls to mind Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan, but without the bombastic pretension. The vocals cut through the mix with a detached urgency that complements the instruments weaving angles in the background. “Triangulate” deftly straddles the line between free-form jamming and premeditated structure, thanks in no small part to Slim Charles’s rhythm section. Jarvis and Siu deftly transition between the song’s multiple parts, anchoring the deft guitar interplay of Mickelson and Green in a solid foundation, thereby lending form to what could otherwise seem directionless.

Well, hello there! Oliver Nelson has used a bit of french funk flare to turn Janelle Monáe’s “Tightrope” into one hell of a dancy track.

The original song was released in 2010 as the first single off Janelle’s album The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III). Premiered on Pitchfork, the track was notable for the inclusion of Outkast’s Big Boi, a huge endorsement for Ms. Monáe, who at the time was still establishing her brand.

Flash forward 3 years to Oliver Nelson’s remix, and i think we’ve got a revitalized and hella catchy single here.

What's so good?

It’s only March, but I’m certain “Pictures on Silence” will go down as one of my favorite releases of 2013. This is a future soul album from a producer who knows how to accurately punctuate his beats with silence. The layered vocal samples and tight beats here on ”The Duo” are only one example of Atu’s ability to mesh smooth R&B with that sense of stillness. Alicia Keys’ effervescent voice fades in and out, impeccably matching the continuous claps. It’s epic. And so is the lush black & white music video and album artwork.

This is the third time we’ve covered Atu, a 21-year-old Malawian producer from Ann Arbor, Michigan. This time he’s got a new full-length with collaborations from the likes of Sango and dpat, along with updated/remastered tracks like the popular “What You Like.” Definitely an album you don’t want to miss. Check out the subtle piano on “Let Me” — fucking perfect.

You can listen to all tracks on Bandcamp. Heads-up: all proceeds will go to EveryChild in hopes of providing some financial assistance to rural areas of Malawi. Future soul with a social bend: you can’t get any better than that.

I was a little surprised to see Miami’s Robby Hunter Band releasing new material on a Friday, considering I rarely come across anything new during the weekend. Nonetheless I will review the hell out of their debut single, “Hard On Me.”

The band describes this track as:

“…a dancey dollop of doo-wop that merges Motown pop appeal with Phoenix-y fatness, all the while taking on the timeless subject of sexual frustration. Relieve your auditory boules bleues with a jam that your grandma can get down to.”

That sums up the song quite nicely. I would say that they have a very Chromeo-like sound, minus the electronic elements, combined with some of Breakbot’s soulful beats.

These guys literally joined Facebook about a week ago, and performed at Austin’s SXSW showcase this past weekend — talk about being thrown into the deep end!

The Hood Internet have established themselves again and again as a formidable mashup force. So, it comes as little surprise that their mix of Daft Punk and Justin Timberlake leaves me with little option than to feature it. How could you possibly resist a song this funky?

When I signaled this track was in my queue for review, my friend wrote to me about the dance potential of my ethnic heritage, “Can Arabs even feel the funk?” Incredulously, I wrote back, “What kind of question is that? Don’t you remember dancing in Beirut to the [albeit cheesy] Jad Choueiri track, “Funky Arabs“? That track brought down the club every time.” I mean, c’mon people, that question was settled for good in 2009.

And anyone who can’t feel the filthy funk flowing through them on this Aeroplane remix just ain’t got no rhythm. Aeroplane takes this Justin Timberlake track and amps up the smoothness straight out of the stratosphere. It’s so hot it singes the air around your speakers.

I wasn’t excited at all for that weak lyric tenor Justin Timberlake to reemerge into the scene, but if it inspires a few more remixes like this one, I might just be yelling “Hail, the return of JT” at the club this summer.

Above the Fold – Press On

What's so good?

In an album loaded with angst and heartache, “Press On” provides a much-needed dose of unrestrained optimism. From its opening drum roll to its final chorus, this standout track exudes positive energy, suggesting that for all the sorrows chronicled throughout Above the Fold’s debut album, Deep End of Down, guitarist/vocalist Sean Gibson sees a light at the end of the tunnel.

The song’s lyrics are sentimental, but in a genuine, unpretentious way. The biggest attractions, however, are the instrumentals. Although other tracks on the album are flashier, it is clear even in the comparatively subdued “Press On” that Above the Fold’s musicians are of exceptionally high caliber. Gibson plays with a funky jangle (yes, that is a contradiction) that is equal parts Jimi Hendrix and Peter Buck of R.E.M. Bassist Jerry Curatolo emphasizes the funky side of the equation, unobtrusively channeling the band’s classic rock flavor.

Despite their clear influences, Above the Fold possess an unmistakable style of their own. For instance, towards the end of “Press On,” the band segues into an unexpected instrumental break. It would be inappropriate to call it a solo, since it also serves as a showcase for Gibson and drummer Mike Lidh.

Much has been written about the rejuvenating quality of music. “Press On” is the kind of track that will not only boost your spirits, but have you coming back to it again and again. Ultimately, this infectious track demonstrates that solid pop hooks, skillful yet unobtrusive musicianship, and all-around solid songcraft can go a long way towards helping you follow Gibson’s timeless advice. “Press On,” indeed, at least until the promising new band that is Above the Fold comes out with a new album.

SXSW 2013: Soul Preview, Ft. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

As much as I appreciate soulful music, the artists showcased in Brooklyn’s Daptone Records Super Soul Revue are the embodiment of soul.

I’m not a religious person, so I couldn’t normally tell you much about it, but when I first heard “Old Landmark” off The Como Mamas’ debut album, Get an Understanding, it most definitely ”felt like real religion.” If there ever was an instrument to cut through skin and bone, it would be the raw, euphonious voice of three-in-one.

Then there’s a different kind of soul, built up over a lifetime, passionately wavering through experience; Charles Bradley can sing you a little something about that on “Strictly Reserved For You” off upcoming, Victim of Love.

There’s also that powerful groove, formed by the collective efforts of many brilliant men. The Budos Band, Menahan Street Brand, and The Sugarman 3, all offer a form of instrumental energy, colored by their respective shades of funk, rock and afro-soul.

And undeniably, there’s Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. Although no introduction is necessary, I’ll mention that the band has collaborated with everyone from Prince to David Byrne to Al Green, and released four critically-acclaimed albums, with I Learned The Hard Way debuting at #15 on the US Billboard 200.

If that’s not enough soul for you, then fortunate SXSW attendes can experience The Super Soul Revue, on March 14, 2013 at The Moody Theater. And for everyone else, visit Daptones Record’s website to purchase and preview any of artist’s albums in their entirety.

Detroit is the shit. From social movements to music and culture, Detroit is one of the most important cities in the country. Pretty much all music that is popular today has direct roots to the Motor City, from hip-hop and R&B to EDM and more. But if you were just watching MTV or listening to the radio, you may have never known.

Amp Fiddler is an important figure in Detroit music. A talented singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer, the OG has worked with a myriad of extremely talented folks like George Clinton, Prince, Maxwell, J Dilla, and Jay Electronica. He actually was the one to first put an MPC in Dilla’s hands and taught him some basics of how to work the machinery when the young producer was just fresh out of high school. To this day, Amp continues to humbly and silently mentor budding musicians from his hometown. But for all his musical acumen and abilities, Amp has only two solo LPs to his credit. That’s all about to change as he reportedly readies two full LPs for release in 2013.

Unrelated, he recently quietly uploaded a few tracks to his SoundCloud page titled “Conant Gardens,” after the historic housing projects in Detroit. Raw and visceral, the track we’re streaming features a deep, rubbery bass, classic Detroit keys and Amp fiddling with his vocals. So simple yet so sweet!
